Any Mommies in mid-late 30s or over 40 with small children?

<font size="+2">Happy New Year 2012 !</font>

I was on leave for the past few days, but so busy with my new house renovation, running around looking for sinks, taps, doors, etc.

Time flies, the holidays are over so quickly. My kids have done the following : swimming, rock climbing, flying trapeze, made a bear and a bunny, sewed a dress for the bunny, planted bean, read novels in both English and Chinese, visited a virtual world, learn computer programming in C#. I wanted to teach the kids to build electronics circuits, but not enough time. I wish their holidays are longer !

Hi mumusings,
I am also very disappointed with the service standards in Singapore. Not only in Uniqlo, but also in many other shops. I think it is because jobs are easy to find in Singapore, that is why the sales staff don't bother to have a good attitude. I see so many Filipino sales staff nowadays, feels like living in a foreign country.

Nowadays I prefer to buy everything online, don't like to walk into a shop anymore, except for NTUC.

yawn,
I put very effective sunblock on my kids and myself, we did not get much tan. My hubby did not put on sunblock and he got sun burnt quite badly.

My boy will still be in the afternoon session, he takes the school bus to and from school.

Hi Tam,

Sounds like your kids accomplished many exciting tasks during their hols! Good for you.

The 2 staff I wrote about are Singaporeans. That's the problem: inadequate training = potentially weak service. Whether foreigners or locals, service industry need to really hire the correct trainers and change their mentality that customers owe them sales.

Hello Mummies,

Happy New Year to all of you!

Hope that this brand new year will be a peaceful and smooth-sailing one for everyone.

Hi All,

Hope the kids had a good first-day at school!

Hi Helen,

Thanks!!! Relative passed it to me through my parents so didn't get to ask. I find the mat vey good 'cos it's really just like a piece of paper and dries up fast. The dangdang one's good pricing. Might just see if I can get it. A lot larger/wider.

Hi mumusings,
I was super busy the past few days. I need to go to my kids' school bookshop to get some textbooks because these were out of stock during the holidays. At the same, I had to work with the contractor on the renovation, there are so many details to take care of.

Actually I think even if Singaporeans are given training, they still don't bother to give good service. Singaporeans below the age of 30 can find jobs very easily, so they have the mentality that if they don't like a job, just quit and find another one.

When I was in China, I was very impressed by the service standards, I believe the reason is because sales jobs at shopping malls, mid to high range restaurants, etc are considered good jobs which are difficult to find, that is why the young Chinese are keen to work hard.

Recently when I was in Fox to buy clothes for my kids, the supervisor was training a staff from Indonesia, and he asked me : "Where are all the Singaporeans ? " because he could not find Singaporeans to work in the shop. I also find it strange.

Hi Tam,

On the reverse, I know of someone who's good at sales but never manages to get through interview maybe because she's a graduate. She's fine with the pay but never gets called up for 2nd interview, Uniqlo included. Yet, you see part-time kids and foreigners everywhere. I think it's to do with the mentality of the retailers. They want to earn from max markup and least overheads. Fox also same as Uniqlo, part of Wing Tai. My friend said there were many locals going for the interview and her interview went very well. Puzzles me what happened. She's such an easy-going person and has done numerous sales jobs before. The supervisor at Fox will be at the receiving end 'cos he simply is instructed to train newbies (wherever/whoever they may be). Sad.

Handling contractors is a highly damanding chore. Good luck! They will promise one thing and totally do something else so have to check every day!. My contractor 'threw' away a BRAND NEW Ariston water heater which was for installation. Maybe that's their way of 'tipping' their workers. All claimed they had no idea the heater was BRAND NEW even though I placed it together with all the NEW stuff to be installed including taps, sink etc. Selective thieving.

mumusings,
Is it because your friend is asking for a salary which is too high, or she is over 30 ? Companies usually prefer to employ people under 30.

The supervisor at Fox is also Indonesian !

Your contractor is really dishonest.
Fortunately my new place is only 3 minutes walk from my old place. I have been going there everyday to check. I kept changing my mind about how things should be done, also made a few mistakes like buying washing basins which are too big. My contractor has no problems so far.

Hi Tam,

Nope. My friend was willing to take whatever pay they were offering (I think under S$2000) and is in her 20s. Anyway it's a mystery what goes on within hiring departments - maybe there are hidden 'rules'. Not every young person in Singapore is greedy for high pay. Some just want peace of mind and to excel in what they enjoy.

My contractor was certainly dishonest. Too many horror stories to share within one post hahaha... They have too many sub-contractors who then hire other sub-workers to handle different tasks so broken telephone is to be expected, even with drawings and phone calls. Which contractor you using - if good, please PM me contact in case I have a need for small jobs at home.

mumusngs,
Another reason I can think of is that clothing stores want to hire slim and good looking sales staff. Otherwise it is really hard to undestand why your friend is not hired.

Ok I PM you the contact already. Please check your spam folder if you don't see my email.

Hi Mumusings,

Is your DS attending Nursery this year? Its a good platform for socialising.

My kids are also using Aqua Doodle (similar to what you have). My DD1 got this as a BD gift. Its good to use it while we travel. No mess to clear
happy.gif
You can get Aqua Doodle from major Dept stores/ Toy'R"Us.

Renovation Contractors - Need to be monitored closely. Always over-promise and end up deliver shabby works....not easy to get real good ones...sighhhh

Service Staff - I give up hope on them. Tangs and Robinsons used to have good service staff. But, now many of them have since retired and taken over by foreigners (many of them Filipinos and Chinese). Locals shun such jobs as this job requires long standing hours.

Sigh... you folks read about Grace Fu's comments on the drastic change to her lifestyle should her pay be cut? The last time was Lim Wee Kiak saying lower pay = cannot hold up head to talk to CEOs. http://sg.news.yahoo.com/minister%e2%80%99s-comments-on-pay-cuts-spark-public-debate.html

I am a pauper indeed. Zero income, full-time mom and so many 'sacrifices' for motherhood. Wonder if high pay has really resulted in loss of sense of reality and compassion. So to say all this lady's previous speeches are just to garner votes, nothing else.

If I can serve the country, I think the honour is great enough even with minimal/normal pay of S$5000 so long as I have enough for transport, groceries and kid's education. Atrocious ethics.

Hi Tam,

My friend is slim, pretty, polite, many years experience in retail on/off although she worked in advertising for a few years before deciding that retail is more meaningful. Under 30, willing to take any pay.

Many local people can do a good job with decent pay and boost of morale through sound training. I've also worked as a receptionist, sold stuff and other jobs before before uni. Not true that Singporeans cannot handle jobs well. The problem is bullying at workplace and double-standards that make many people disllusioned.

I've never shared why I quit my job before. Was feeling rather low last week and typed out some bits of my very depressing last-years at work before quitting. I was crying so much before and after leaving because I loved my job (not so much the pay) and couldn't take the bullying any longer. http://mumusings.blogspot.com/2011/12/there-are-no-goodbad-people-just.html

mumusings,
The last reason I can think of is that the people doing the hiring are all foreign talent , they want to employ workers from their own country. I knew one malaysian manager who loved to hire malaysians.

Your blog post is very thought provoking. I suffered from very bad managers in my previous job, and I was deeply hurt by people who pretended to be good friends, but back stabbed me. They don't even have the guts to confront me directly.

I read Grace Fu's comments and I feel that there is a worrying trend that the elites do not understand how common people live. The result of using high salary to attract so called talent is that they get people who care more about their standard of living than serving the public.

BTW the SMRT CEO Saw has just resigned.

snowball,
My contractor is only doing hacking and laying of tiles for me, completed within 2 weeks and so far I am satisfied. I am not going to do any built in cabinets, so less headache. I am getting most furniture from Ikea, even my kitchen
happy.gif

I also give up hope on local service staff. I buy almost everything like clothes, underwear, shoes, even towels and pillowcases online from USA website. Cheaper, better quality, and I don't need to interact with sales staff who does not deserve my money.

mumusings,
Grace Fu wrote about a drastic change in the standard of living. I suppose she meant that before she could buy herself and each of her 3 sons a mercedes, and each a landed property. Now all of them need to share one mercededs and one house. Money is never enough, even when you are earning 1.1 million a year. I wonder why these ministers don't consider donating their money to help the poor ?

hi mummies

i am back! heehee but with a bad cough which worsens due to too much talking, i guess. hmm...dunno if i can make it till end of this year??? so tired even tho i m at home by 3pm... mayb jus the beginning, plus my gals did not go to childcare cos they were not well and the childcare has new case of HFMD. anyway it was a blessing that they stayed home, as they were learning to adjust to mummy leaving for work. next week when they need to go to childcare, hopefully my mum can handle!

tam
i agree, the more we earn the more we tend to spend. so when $$$ is taken, much noise is heard! we don't hear them claiming that with increased salaries, more good work will be done or donation given, but once salary is cut, woa they made noise! but afterall they r only human beings(my only explanation for them, anyway why shld i explain for them hor? i must be nuts!!!)

ahh!!! so much to do at home and at work, must keep teliing myself go slow go slow, one day at a time...geez... sorry mummies, all my grouses...

Hi Tam and Helen,

I'm just simply so outraged. Elites can sell of one property, stocks etc and get back money. What do normal people like us have to sell when times are bad? Better still, they can even earn from flipping thanks to inside news.

Helen,

Take care. Throat pain, cold and fever when I was relief teaching, after 2 weeks. It's the mental strain and talking/raising voice.

Helen,
Take care ! I know how tough it is to teach a class of 30 young kids, I also did relief teaching like mumusings years ago.
It is very difficult especially when you have kids who cannot sit still. I admire primary school teachers for their patience.

Hi Mumusings

Thank u! Read your blog too, so just sharing this:
I sat through a meeting last week and came out with the feeling that my colleagues are so filled with "fear" for their HOD! Felt sad as I have worked with this HOD hence know how she works and know that she is not what they perceived her to be. Could not help but think that one has this "negative feeling" cos of insecurity and often insecurity stems from incapability. Told my HOD to go slow with her implementation as she is still new in the management and the colleagues are still very unsure about what she wants. Glad that she understood what and where I was coming from.
Guess everywhere is similar.

Another friend was bombarded by the leader with the same statement:" do you a think you are very smart?" She was so badly affected and was very sad that her many years of experience is not recognised! I feel so sad for her and for what is becoming of the education of Singapore! Given a choice, I will continue to stay at home.

Take heart, my friend, your choice of being a stay at home will definitely pay off! You know it when you see the light in your child's eyes when he looks up to mummy and says:" I love you, mommy!"

mumusings, helen,
I think many people are outraged, our ministers are still the highest paid in the world even after the pay cut. However, there are so many problems in education, housing, transport, etc that needs to be solved.

The % of Singaporeans, born and bred in Singapore will keep going down. I believe that many who can afford it will migrate to other countries. I have even heard of families who left Singapore because they don't want their kids to be educated here.

Hi Helen and Tam,

I hate the double-standards and hypocrisy of management people. They'll always have the "open-door" policy seemingly to want to get feedback. When you do talk objectively and frankly, alot of daggers fly out 'cos improvements will "spoil the market" and "make it difficult" for those who are lousy and don't bother to upgrade their skills. Was very dejected and disllusioned because 20% were bullies, 30% jaded, 30% sitting on fence and 20% really working but exploited.

Imagine a colleague hinted to me (she's been there for years, non-grad, but 'valuable'): "So this year, I've decided to take things easy, do you understand what this means?" I got it. It means, "I have the license to eat-snake and you can't do anything to me". She's always crying, saying that she feels undervalued, stressed and no longer relevant 'cos nobody respects her. All these crappy people belong to the Jurassic era! They spend time surfing the net, gossiping, offering to cook dessert in the pantry and running to report petty 'crimes' to the boss. Why are organisations still condoning such eunuch-behaviour?

Age/gender/qualifications don't really matter. What's pressing now is QUALITY of character and training. Very sad
sad.gif

Hi mimusings,
My ex-company also has open door policy, and I agree with what you wrote.

Now I am working in an organization which does not have an open door policy, but I am happy here because everyone works independently most of the time, and there are less chances of conflicts. Furthermore many of my colleagues are in their 50s and 60s they are so much wiser. In fact, I really admire the character of some of my old colleagues. They work really hard and they don't complain.

Hi Yawn,

YES, I read the news. And guess what? They were let off with a warning! I accidentally saw an apartment doing the same in my block on a rental website I accidentally clicked on. It's really sick these PRs and new citizens are blatantly abusing their privileges. There's also one ground unit that's likely subletting their rooms 'cos I see different 'students' go into the flat every other month. Not forgetting also the free-lance prostitutes or call-to-order girls/pimps at times lurking around in the afternoons.

yawn,
My next door myanmar neighbour is probably also running their flat as a hotel. I always see so many different people staying in the flat. Personally I hope that HDB only allows singapore citizens to own HDB flat. PRs should never be allowed to own a flat, not even resale, they can only rent. The reason why HDB prices are ridiculously high now is due to the PRs.

Hi Yawn/ Mumusings,

It all boils down to insufficient housing to house so many additional "immigrants" which I guess our Govt got no solution that they have to allow this "subletting of HDB flats" thingy. To me, this is going against the Basic principal that owning is HDB flat is provision of basic housing for citizens. If they can sublet their flat, it means that they do not need this basic housing and the flat should be returned to HDB and allow other needy citizens basic housing.

See how congested our roads are and how sardine-packed our MRT trains that it gets so over-loaded now.

snowball,
I totally agree with you !

i just paid $610K for a resale flat. This is a ridiculous price to pay, all thanks to immigrants driving the prices up.

Hi Tam,

WOW! That's a high price to pay! I have no problems with PRs/foreigners buying private property but HDB should be Singaporeans-Only. They are now penalising us local citizens and giving them lenient punishment for crimes they commit. Look at Quan Yi Feng, being let off with probation and S$3000 bond. What sort of signal is our courts sending to these people?

Hi mumusings,
I have no choice because I really need the extra space right now.
I don't mind PRs if they eventually become citizens. The fact is that many remain as PRs until they retire, the sell their flats and return to their home countries and buy big houses there.  PRs also compete with us for places in primary schools. There is really no incentive to become citizens.

Hi Tam,

Understand the need for more space with 2 growing kids, mom and maid
happy.gif
Enjoy the new flat - must be very exciting for your children right? Are they doing up their own room? I kind of did up my study room (now my son's play/rest room) and he's squealing "GROOM MY ROOM!", an Okto programme whereby kids get to revamp their rooms FOC.

Well, hope citizens' feedback will be heard before terrible things happen next elections.

Hi Mumusings,

Perhaps, our society treasure "imported talents" like Quan Yi Feng (she is one of the best Comperes around I have to admit). But, her character sucks.....She is always being let off scot-free.

Hi Tam,

The E-flats around by place is going ard $650k upwards. Those HDB penthouses are going at $800k and up, notwithstanding we stay at the remote CCK area....sighhhhh

Hi All,

Whew... just sort of finished spring cleaning and shopping. Found these cakes at Carrefour for S$1.40. My son's favourites. Amazing deal! Hb and kid loves the pandan while I prefer the orange chiffon. Can't get any cheaper than this, considering Bengawan Solo's S$8+.

http://mumusingseat.blogspot.com/2012/01/pandan-and-orange-chiffon-cakes.html

Hi Snowball,

Yup. Agree. QuanYF is a competent MC but she's really taking things for granted and shows sheer lack of respect for the law. I do not agree that being angry = the right to take it out on others. Even if one is provoked. Just not right.

Hi mumusings,
My kids are very happy getting their own rooms. I only let them choose the wall colour and curtains. My girl wants pink walls and a pink door. There is no way she is getting a pink door, but pink walls are OK. They also asked for a queen size bed each. I agree because it is important to have a comfortable night's sleep. The rest of the things I will decide for them.

snowball,
CCK flats also going as high as $650K ? I am surprised. My area is beside Jurong Point which is very popular, flats now are also asking for $650K, one unit is asking for $700k. Early 2011 exec flats are sold for under $600k, too bad I stil cannot buy at that time because HDB had not approved of the transfer of my old flat.

mumusings, snowball,
quan yi feng is never my favourite. I like kym ng most because she is singaporean, doesn't matter if she does not speak as well.

Hi Tam,

Queen size is very practical 'cos kids grow up fast and will need more space - no need to change to larger one in future. We're also getting the boy a Q-size next year. I wonder why many parents spend lots of money on baby cots / tiny mattresses when it's safer placing them on a single/queen sized mattress on the floor till around 3 or 4 years old.

Pink door will be hideous hahaha... good thing you didn't give in to that
happy.gif
If I ask my son, he'll likely say Thomas-blue door too! You and I are 100% practical moms.

re MC.. yes, quan yi feng might be one of the better ones but look at the exposure that she gets. I am sure some of those local pp, given more exposure, will be up to par. Its a typical 'foreign is better' mentality.

Hi Mumusings,

大中国年糕 is very nice. But, no time to go and queue up to buy.

Bought a small one from nearby cakeshop to put at home for luck only.

Wishing all Mummies in this Forum a very happy, prosperous and successful 祥龙年
happy.gif

Hi mumusings,
Glad to know that we think the same way about beds.

Now that HDB flats are getting so expensive, in the future our kids may not be able to afford their own flats. When they get married, they can sleep in their old room and use the same queen size bed hahaha.

I already spent about $30k on the renovation, feeling very poor now. I must think of ways to save money.
