Any comments on Montessori for Children

selina,

thanks for the info.
MMI at kovan : you mean only foc for 30 mins and the rest is chargable ? actually i dun mind to give it a trial like what you said to see how monte works. if 4 children is enough i think not a problem. count me in.

Funny: Ya, no pt to put ash in infant care. waste of $. moreover, they won't learn much. Shall just wait and wait log. in the meantime, i may juz continue wif GUG or send her to my neiaghbourhood's NTUC CC for flexi-programme. The chinese teacher who entertained me was nice. The principal left when I was there ard 5.10pm. I called beforehand to make appointment at 5.30pm. But she wasn't willing to wait for me. Wonuld feel she's not pro enough. But on the other hand, I can't demand her to stay since it's after her office hours. For 18-30mths old, they do practical life activities, more on play and learn, puppetry, story-telling, etc. But the books seemed kinda old.
Anyone has comments on NTUC CC?
I saw the K1 and 2 classes. Kinda rowdy and the kids were left to play alone while the teacher was with another 2 kids at a table. A boy was stepping a toy car and trying to "skate" on it. The teacher didn't bother about his safety. Hmmm.... guess i can't raise my expectations too high.
Just keep my fingers crossed that Ash can enrol into LV before June 07.

Selina: I am also staying put with GUG for the time-being. Firstly, it's the nearest enrichment centre from my place, secondly, I hope the teachers/curriculum will gradually improve. when i recite the zoo phonics to my gal, she seems more interested nw. Yr boy is moving to toddler class next term? can't wait to go back to gug next term.

Hi Funny, weilin,

hmm i need call them c whether can allow 13mth bb for the trial..

no, 30mins means it is juz a short short special trial class for us.. not their standard class.. they dun hv trial, but i persuade them to hv some trial, i say: i know some mummies also interested in weekend enrichment class, but we all wanna hv a trial becoz the parents dun like first... c whether children interested.. then the principal say, ok maybe they held a short short trial for us b4 the real class... hehe if any of u good at talking, maybe can persuade her
to give us a longer trial class?

tomorrow i roughly post their fee here.. now rush back home le..

c ya..

Thanks all for the comments and contribution. it was really helpful.

-can anyone share more about the montessori schools?
-anyone has checked it out?
-how different is it from non-montessori schools?
-were the child actually 'left alone' to engage in purposeful activities while the teacher facilitate?
-is it 'worth' it? as certain such activities can be done at home?

thanks ladies

Hi ora,
My girl attended Montessori playgroup since 18mths,she is going to Primary 1 next year.Currently still in MMI(Mondern Montessori International).

There have been a lot of Montessori schools/childcare centres coming up in recent years.I am not sure how good they are as I have not checked them out.

I chose MMI because it's been around for so many years, sort of already "proven" and "tested".I see many of my daughter's classmates have older siblings attended MMI, and they are coping well in their primary schools.

Montessori has been widely commented by some non-montessori trained teachers/principals/owners of child care centres as being "individualistic",child left alone to play with their materials etc.....I have personally heard of such comments and also heard it from other mothers.

From what I observed in my girl's school, this is not true. They have their fair share of socialising and sit-together time with other children. I can't comment about other Montessori schools though.

A "pure" montessori school may not have any worksheets for the children, but my daughter's school still give them worksheets for English, Chinese,Maths,Cultural subjects etc. They also have spelling and Chinese Spelling. I think this provide a good bridge to their primary school education later on.

Some other parents may frowned at these worksheets and spelling in pre-schools, as they think children should only learn-thru-play and should not be given worksheets or spelling. But personally I don't find anything wrong with that, as long as the children are not too stressed out,and they are learning the words systematically.

I have heard from my cousin, a pre-school teacher in PAP kindergarten about a friend's daughter who cried every time she's preparing for Spelling and Ting1 Xie3 in Primary 1,as she came from a All-play pre-school, had never been given any spelling and Ting Xie,not even in K2.

Hi funny

I hope that my darling will get a place in LV gentle road next year. what about u? where r u confirm putting ur darling?

Hi selina

Personally, I also feel that GUG (GT) better than GUG (GB). At least more learning in the form of story telling, craft, new words, than just playing, moving, singing, dancing.

now when i start reciting the zoophonics with my darling she is so excited and after 'a' she cant wait to say 'bubba bear 'b' 'b' 'b'.

By the way, anyone has bought the zoophonics materials/package from GUG? Any comments?

Hi van,
ur info is very helpful!! thanks. which branch of MMI ur kid is in?

Hi mummies,
this whole afternoon get company meeting. so not able to post .. juz wanna ask, any comments for the little skool-house? seems they get playgroup and half day/full day.. 1 located near AMK, 1 located near Orchid country club.. from their website, seems not bad..

selina, weilin, ac,

how do you learn the zoophonics ? till now i still dun know how ? did yu all buy the zoophonics material from GUG ? is it worth ?

hi van,

thanks for sharing. i also want to know which MMI your kid is in ?

Bascially i like monte approach but not necessary a true true monte whereby no worksheets at all cos in future when they are in P1 they still have to face all these spelling, worksheets etc. it's better to start early than late. True, so long we do not stress them, it is still alright.

Hi Van,
thanks for the helpful info, esp coming from a mum whose kid has gone through the system.
-they have a branch in woodlands rite?
-so does that mean that MMI is not a 'pure' MMI school?
-how are the teachers?
-which branch did your girl attend?
-Do they give individual attention to the kids during such montessori playtime?
-do the older kids n younger kids interact?
sorry for asking so many questions. thanks.

ac,
i have the gug package. starter i think.
its just few sets of the cards (small, not big like in class) and a cdrom which i have yet to see since i bought it months back.
my kid likes it.
happy.gif

ac, you have checked out Genevieve (goldhill)?
how is it? worth the time n money?thanks

selina,
i would like to know more too. sounds good.
i like the location at occ but quite inconvenient if you dont drive though they have a shuttlebus.

THE PURPLE TRAIN (at woodlands civic centre)

PAT SCHOOLHOUSE (serangoon)

what sets them apart? why are they soooo ex?

KINDERLAND
any comments?

LV.
sorry if i miss any post, but whats the curriculum like at LV, and why are there so many mums keen on LV gentle road.
thanks sooo much

Selina,ora,funny,
My daughter is attending MMI at Phoenix Walk/CCK. As I stay in CCK, and this is the nearest MMI.

I am not very sure whether other MMI are using the exact worksheets that my dd's school are using, but I believe the Montessori Materials and Method should be the same in all MMI schools.

Before I enrolled her in MMI, I did ask to see the worksheets that are given to K2 children,as I am worried that my daughter couldn't cope when she goes to Primary 1.After browsing through, I am confident that they are actually more advanced than Primary 1 syllabus.

ora,
My dd's teacher did tell me that a "pure" Montessori school don't give worksheets to children.

Do also note that there is another type of Montessori schools that are not "pure",they only let the children engage in Montessori acitivities for 1 to 2 hour daily or a few times weekly.I have come across two such school/child care centre in CCK.

Yes,the teachers do give the children individual attention during Montessori time.Their progress are also monitored and reviewed in children's quarterly report.

I am not too sure what you mean by "nteract"with older kids,or the extent of interaction you expect. But I do note that my girl has lots of older and younger "friends" in her school. Her quarterly review also consistently have remarks like she interact well with everyone in the schools. I have also noticed that most of her classmates are very vocal, not afraid to speak up.

The obvious benefits of Montessori method, from what I observed are their strength in Maths, phonics, and motor skills.I am also impressed with the topics they covered under "Cultural"subjects,as can be seen from the worksheets my dd brought back.

I have another cousin who used to be principal of PAP Kindergarten said to me "Do you know that Montessori is not the best method?"

My reply was:"I didn't put my girl through Montessori Method thinking that it's the best method,as I really don't know what is the best method. I chose it because I think it's a method that works for my girl, and suits her/our needs."

Hope my information helps.

Hi Van,

Very detailed posting. =)
I have the same worries as the other mummies abt montessori method too. I had read "Secrets of Childhood" by Maria Montessori. W
hat is most important is for parents to know and understand the centres goals and objectives when they offer their set of curriculum to the children. In terms of selecting the right centre for their children, the parents must know first of all what or how they would want their children to grow up into do they want their children to be self-motivated, driven, creative? Or they want their children to be a conformist, generally always waiting from adults on what to do, requires approval from adults all the time etc. With this in mind, then parents would be able to decide which approach would be best suited to their children.

Thus, for myself n my hubby, we decided not to let her go to MFC (Montessori for Children) at Newton and chose LV in the end.

Funny: Not sure how long we have to wait. Guess we just have to wait. Think you will get a placement 1st since you have registered last year. I have only registered in Apr this year, Meantime, I will send my girl to NTUC CC near my place till she's offered a place in LV. If she's happy at NTUC, I will just let her stay there.

Hi mummies,
today a bit busy..
jus answer weilin, many children in my block attend NTUC cc in Toa Payoh, seems all very happy kids.. talked with few parents, seems hv positive feedback.. yet i hvn't made a visit yet..

van n weilin,
thanks for the feedback.

my knowledge abt the M method is very limited (so trying to read n find out more)

weilin,
you mention abt what the parents want for their child etc.. about self-motivation, conformist etc.
and in the end you chose LV cause LV curriculum offers more creativity than M schools? is that the 'reason'?
happy.gif

van,
-I was talking to a teacher from a M school and she mentioned that for some activities, they encourage the older kids to assist and guide the younger kids.
-several of the M schools teachers and principals i spoke to mention that you need to be in a M school for few years and also for M schools (dunno if its their mkting ploy.),and if the child has 'special' needs, early intervention can be detected.
-for M schools, they cater the materials/curriculum to each child, so a child be doing more advance material in eg language area but maybe easier materials in eg maths.

-any comments on the above of is it just some sales tactics?
thanks

LV: MOE curriculum? thanks

Ora: I am not sure if my child will become self-centred if she goes to Montessori school. I am afraid that this may happen. I was reading one of the blogs I frequent, this mummy sends her boy to a Montessori sch. Her son's classmates have difficulty adapting to the P1 system and have to be sent for this Learning Support Programme as the child can't cope with work. Ora, it's not a marketing tactics about Montessori schools. This method may not be suitable for every kid. I also heard of some kids who learn faster than their peers who are not exposed to Montessori environment. So, it really depends on what kind of curriculum/environment suits your precious. Maria Montessori believes that premature introduction to subjects will only cause undesirable outcomes. That's why a true montessori programme doesn't come with worksheets, spelling etc. The kids learn through play.

LV follows MOE pre-sch curriculum. I am quite comfortable with their curriculum.

hi weilin,
you have been most helpful and informative. thanks alot.
Please pardon my ignorance as i am still trying to read n learn more abt the M schools.
before i started going to the schools to take alook, i also had this fear that my child will be self-centred n lack social skills. but after seeing a few, they do have activities where the kids does cooperative learning n work. (Is that why they say that spore has no or few pure M schools?)

wow, that mums experience with M sch sounds quite unsettling. can you post/pm me the blog's link? thanks

you mention "Maria Montessori believes that premature introduction to subjects will only cause undesirable outcomes"
this is so interesting... can comment more.. i will def go and find out more cause coincidentally today, my hb was commenting that our kid is already picking up things that is not 'age-appropriate' and he mention it might have detrimental effect later on. for eg: at 18m, other than the basic shapes that she knows and she can spot them easily in objects around her, she can tell us correctly, shapes like 'hexagon' 'oval' crescent' when she spots one outside and use prepositions like 'across' 'side' correctly. anything wrong with this? I thought is common?
didnt want to argue with hb cos i am clueless :p

you are very well-read in M literature. any books you recommend for this cluelss mum to find out more abt Maria M principles and practices? thanks alot. really appreciate it.

sorry so many questions:

what do they mean when the school say that their curriculum follows MOE? even for nursery(abt3-4yrs)? there is a moe curriculum?

the syllabus? teaching methodology in Kindergarten? or?????
i am soo confused.

Ora: U r welcome. I only know alittle her n there. Basically, if u pop by MPH or Kinnokuniya, you can get various books on info on Montessori methods, principals and even life of Maria Montessori. Alternatively, you can google it easily. =)
Montessori may or may not be the best start in life for your child. Guess they are just too young for us to pre-determine their characters etc. Normally, a child steps into a montessori pre-school at 2.5 yrs old, he/she begins with the practical life exercises. There's no definite age for the intro of each apparatus, each child advances at own's unique pace.

My colleague's frd who used to be a montessori teacher actually encourages me to send my gal to a montessori school. But agter reading n searching ard for schools, I came to realise what my hubby n I r seeking for our girl. We believe that children do not neccessarily have to attend montessori preschool in order to grow into well-adjusted adults. All they need is personal attention and guidance, opportunity to experience and freedom to choose. We can easily do the montessori exercises at home. Afterall, we didn't like our child to be left to her own device and learn. I've been to 3 montessori centres. The children r basically given freedom of movement and activities. Haha.... we are more kiasu parents who want to see that the fees we pay are worth, and my gal to be on the pencil-paper approach. Furthermore, the adaption to P1 system worry. I have checked out Learning Vision. There are no pencil-paper exercises at such a tender age of 18-30 months. The kids engage in activities on gross & fine motor skills, cognitive development, language and social emotional development.

hi weilin,
thanks again for the detailed info. :
hehe.. i agree with you. i went to a few M schools and and half the time, the kids are given a lot of freedom and choice to engage in their chosen activities.. so don't know if its 'value for money' :p cause some of the (similar) activities we are already doing it at home.

LV sounds good. will go check it out once i can find the time.
my kid will be turning two this year.
I have been procrastinating and you ladies make me hit the panic button :p Didnt know that some waitlist can be more than a year...
but you all have been most informative. thanks

now still headache....

Hi funny

When u first sign up they will give u one stack of info. all the zoophonics details (name of the animals, actions...) are inside. mayb u can take a look if not ask them for another copy?
happy.gif

Hi ora

Thanks for sharing.
Hmmm.... few sets of cards???
Does ur pack include the zoophonics individual alphabet (like the ones in classroom). u mentioned small, how small? 1/2 of A4 size paper?

I think not all Montessori childcare is the same. It depends on 'how montessori' the centre is and also the teachers. The few montessori that I have been to let me have a 'feel' of the different 'degree' of montessori-ness. I think it's best to visit the centre you are interested in and also observe the teacher and the class that ur child might b in. I experienced different atmosphere of learning and behaviour of children (mayb due to different teacher?????) in different class even thot its the same sch.

hi ac,

i dun have the copy. got to check with them.

weilin,

didn't know you have read up so much. must share share, ok.

Hi weilin

i sent in registration form liao. yes, jan 07.
btw after u sent in u mentioned they send u a letter - confirmation of interest or did i got it wrong?
till date din get any reply, mayb shld call up to see if they got my form.

AC: It was a letter of confirmation of interest. I also stated Jan07 for my girl. They have yet to call/send letter to me. I was told that 'results' will be out after mid-Aug. Not sure if they are calling all the parents up or only call those who manage to get a vacancy. Keeping my fingers crossed.

For you, it's registration form, not confirmation of interest? I filled up a form when I visited. Then they emailed the confirmation of interest letter. After that, no news fr them. Same for your case?

weilin,

ok, i see what i can update you.

btw, have you heard of character montessori at AMK ave 4 ? I may go and take a look.

Funny: How was the open house at LV?

Ya, saw the website before. But AMK too far for me liao. Sticking to LV. Should have a slot for my darling in Jan07.

weilin,

i was there at 10+, already quite a handful of pple. There is a talk about LV followed by a speaker from FeiYue about parenting. Oh, a new LV is going to open at Republic polytechnic.

that's good. i think LV is not bad lah. my hubby quite satisfied with them.

Funny: Sounds great. I have set my heart to let my girl go to LV @ Gentle Rd. Quite confident that my girl will get a place in 07 since I have registered months ago. Think waiting list for N1 is longer.

Hi weilin

Did u get any confirmation letter or juz verbal confirmation from LV? Ur girl will b in the N1 class right?

ac: It's only confirmation of interest. No placement given yet. Coz, I emailed LV to check abt the possibility of enrolling before June 07. My girl will be only 18mths old in Jan 07. Should be the tod class only.

WeiLin,

I also got a call from LV. But the lady told me the principal will advise again as to when to enrol. I dun mind later but not earlier.
Is your gal still with GUG ?

How about you, AC ?

This morning, FM93.8 there was a breakfast talk on Montessori education from the director of MMI. Did not catch the whole talk. Anyone catch it?

Funny: Seemed that the waiting list isn't long. Hahaha.... both of us got places there. I got their letter of offer for Jan 07 intake. Must pay before 1 Sep to secure the place.
Ya, my girl is still with GUG. Will withdraw her after this new term.
