hi mummies!! we are all back to reality!!

i went for my detailed scan last last Tuesday and is confirmed a girl! Bb arielle weighs 430g at 22weeks.. she is really playful compared to jiejie.. can feel her movements all around my tummy.. however, the gynae checked and said that bb head is already down.. was wondering, is it too early? will i go into early labour? the detailed scan also measured the length of my cervix! was suprised..

for mummies who are afraid of bb weight, no worries.. for my #1, she was underweight in the 3rd tri.. around 1kg+.. drank milk everyday to boost weight gain and within 1 month, it shot up and she was born at 2.8kg..else, can have durians and drink bird nest.. accrding to my gynae, this will help bb to boom!

how time flies.. we will be going into our 3rd trimester in probably less than a month!

Mabelths: Yup Yup I want.. Please send me a copy of the breast feeding ebook.

Finally tmr i can see baby again.. Its seems to be a long wait since the detailed scan before CNY.

mummy_relle, my baby was in a transverse (sideway) position during my 21wk detailed scan. And already at 440g! When should the baby turn, head down? I'm more worried about baby getting too big!

mummy_relle: congrats!
happy.gif
yea...very soon...cant wait for my next scan on 5 March..hehee..right before i fly off...my baby really sounds big compared to yours..hahaa...she must be a hungry girl eating alot in my belly!

yveyve18: i've sent!

Chevelle: can u drop me a PM so i have your email? or u can also email me at [email protected]

birdbird: haha..dont worry...my baby was 472g at 22wks!! that's quite big! haha...based on 22wks scan my baby was lying down comfortably...not turning yet too..i think in most cases i read they will start turning in 3rd trim...some middle of 3rd trim like my friend

Is it you who ask me abt the supori sling? Forgot to update. Use it for my nephew last sat. It does not stretch when my nephew is in it. Not like some sling it will stretches. Quite airy and comfortable (I use it for short while only, long period of time not too sure) the only thing is the bb must really know how to sit already than can use the sling if not you will need to use one hand to support his back.

Mabelths
Your link is really very cheap. I just came back from metro and they sell this breastpump at ard $800+. Is it really good? Really don't know if I should get a new one or not. Scare that I will give up breast feeding very fast and it will be wasted.

Sharon: i've sent

Kome: yea...i thought it was quite cheap too...u can pay on the spot upon collection at their place in CCK so quite convenient. Moreover they sort of have a warranty for their purchases + the standard warranty.

As to how good i dont know..hahaa...this will be my #1 so have not tried before

previously what brand did u buy?

mabelths
Previously I am using Ameda but last used was almost 4yrs ago and it was spoilt. That's why I am in a dilemma whether to get a new one or not. Have you buy it? Not sure when will the promotion end.

Chewie
I feel that it is good as it will not stretch too low as time goes by. The sling can only be use at side hip only.

Hi Hui, this dry shampoo was recommended by CGH pharmacy (for use after a ear surgery) and is one of the only 2 dry shampoos available at Guardian/Watsons .

My nephew weight about 7+kg. The sling quite sturdy so i think if use for older kids first than use for younger infant is still ok.

Hi, any mummies going for the mums and dads congress at raffles city in march? There's a topic by Wong Boh Boi on breast feeding..

Happymok, you can buy breastpumps after bb is born, by which time you will have a better idea of how frequently you will be pumping or not. It also depends on whether you plan to continue breastfeeding after ML ends. Most Sg mummies tend to exclusively pump right from the start so they need a good, hardworking and efficient dual rlectric pump. They prefer to pump out and bottle-feed so that its easier to monitor baby's intake. If latching directly it can be hard to know how much bb drank unless you own a baby weighing scale and weigh the baby before and after each feed which was what I had to do when my no.2 was in the NICU (breathing issues, full-term bb). She wouldn't drink from bottles so I bought a weighing scale to use at home.

Most ppl who get it earlier tend to go for discounts / savings but then a lot of ppl also end up only pumping for 1-2 mths so they didn't save that much I think..

Mostly you'll need the pump for the first 1-2 weeks post birth to deal with engorgment issues. It's still easier to latch directly as pumping and then bottle - feeding means there's the extra time, effort needed to pump, store, warm up milk, wash and sterilise bottles and pump parts etc

For what it's worth, I exclusively pumped for no.1 (didn't latch after 1st week) and mostly latched for no.2 (only pumped when she's in hospital). Both times I weaned when I returned to work cos I detest pumping :)

Oh and btw there are no real cost-savings for breastfeeding vs formula.

Any mummy who have ever breastfed will tell you that you still need a pump to standby for the times when you're not with your baby - ie going out w/o child, or to pump and throw after consuming certain meds/alcohol, or just to catch a few hours" sleep and let someone else do the feeding, to transition bb to bottle-feeding etc.

Which means there's still a need to get bottles, sterilisers, milk storage bags, pumps etc.

The only benefit of breastfeeding is the bonding and if latching directly, the fact that you save on all the washing up.

As for the oft-touted benefits to baby's immunity, in my experience the baby is only protected IF the mother falls sick before bb does and the body has already started to generate antibodies. I've noticed that if my girl falls sick first and i only catch it a few days later, she still gets the full-blown effects of the cold or flu.

But if I'm sick first, her symptoms tend to be milder, or sometimes she doesn't even get it. However this seldom happens, it tends to be the other way round.

The unfortunate thing with having an older child in childcare is that the older kid brings home all the viruses and passes them on to the baby. And because the bb's immune system is more defenceless they tend to get it earlier than us mothers since we've all weathered countless colds and flus over the years.

Food for thought

Kome: yes i've gotten the breastpumps already, not sure when is their promo until though, but u may want to email to ask?

absentmama: thanks for the tips!

Ms E: if u're going for the congress do share more! unfortunately i'll be overseas. Flying off to US that day to attend a conference the following week.

absentmama, thanks for the very informative tips

I'm a first time mum and a bit worried about breastfeeding issues, got lots to learn

Happymok - then all the more like what i advised in the first post, you should wait until you have given birth and tried latching directly before deciding whether or not to buy a pump.

It is difficult to know if you will need one now when the baby isn't here, the milk isn't in, you haven't faced the engorgment etc. You also don't know whether you can breastfeed successfully - almost all will want to, but not many do continue past the first couple of months due to nipple soreness etc.

Like I said, most ppl who buy pumps now want to take advantage of baby fair savings. But if you end up not using the pump then ultimatelt it isn't much savings right.

Bluejoy - you're very welcome

Just thought to share some personal experiences since I've done it both ways for 2 kids - exclusive pumping with no.1 and exclusive latching with no.2

mabelths- yes, i have just registered myself for it. Topics seems to be more interesting than last year. Will share on the info after.

bluejoy: sent!

Ms E: yea...i would want to go too..looks informative! too bad the dates dont fit.

btw, another qn to ask...which diaper brand is better for new borns? i'm thinking of getting a pkt to 'standby' first since i'm going to be very busy the coming months with lots of travelling. Am toying btwn huggies ultra or pampers?

Thanks absentmama for sharing your experience especially with us newbies
happy.gif
I agree with the 'see how it goes' approach. For myself I've only gotten a manual avent pump (at a steal!) to standby... Unless I'll be enthusiastically expressing, I won't be investing in those expensive industrious ones yet.

For exclusive pumping/EBM feeding, was it complicated and troublesome?

I'm aiming 6mths with latching or expressing, as I will be travelling a lot when I resume work

happymok, don't worry shopping is too easy heh heh next thing you know you'd be having a big toyogo box full of baby's clothes, socks, bibs and towels (me!!) waiting to be washed! :p I'm trying to exercise self control!

birdbird
Haha......i am trying to exercise self control too. I just went to kiddy palace and brought back 5 sets of booties and mittens. Total already got 7 sets. Just nice 1 day 1 pair. :p

wah! u girls have started shopping!! I have not bought any single item for the baby. Not sure what to buy also. Maybe booties and mittens are good to get first. Second will be to get new breasts pump accessories. Other than that, probably will slowly stock up on some rompers, burp cloth and others....

i have yet to do any shopping as well. Btw, those going to the mothercare bb fair, avoid weekends and weekday lunch hours. The crowd is unbelievable... try to go in the 1st week as the popular sizes run out very fast.

i agree with absentmama's view especially on the immunity part of breastmilk..another pt to consider wld also be mother's diet..i personally believe that if the mother is not eating well or following a gd diet..the nutrients from the bm may not be as gd as taking fm..w fm u are very certain of the amount of nutrients/ vits etc that is in 1 feed...how fatty or nutritious a mum's bm is, rest solely on what she has consume for the day..

as for pumping..even if u are a sahm etc..sometimes the baby jus doesn't latch so in such cases a pump is a life saver..of coz jus like ur baby's preference for certain brand of bottles/ teats..u will never know until u try..i always thought it wld be easy n a breeze to latch the baby but it was not true...my kid refused to latch..even w the help of the nurses it was a nightmare n i eventually gave up n jus pump exclusively...n ultimately stop a mth in coz i cldnt cope on my own w the pumping, washing, heating, feeding n caring for baby..not to deter anyone..im jus saying u will never know until the day comes which method works best for u..hahah no baby follows the SOP to a tee..;)
