(2009/09) September 2009 MTBs

Mommies, breastfeeding is actually really not tt difficult, just a bit of hard work.

Always remember that Milk production is a demand & supply process.

To speed milk production and increase overall milk supply, the key is to remove more milk from the breast and to do this frequently, so that less milk accumulates in the breast between feedings.

That's e reason why I tandem pump when my #2 only nurses 1 side, I pump/manual xpress every time after BB latches to make sure breast is empty. I even add in pumping in between nursing sessions in e 1st 2 mths when I was trying to build up my supply.

e diff in my supply was really v great. With #1, though I managed to TBF her for 1 yr but my supply is more or less just sufficient for her daily needs. I had to relay on nursing milk tea to boost my supply.

With #2, My supply was gd, by 3rd mth, I was running out of storage space & needed to purchase a deep freezer to keep my frozen EBM.

I didn't give up when baby Jed cldn't latch. I pump faithfully @ 3hrly interval, even @ wee hrs (Thank you Shelled for keeping me company on MSN during e wee hours). I was only getting 5ml during my initial pump & now after 10 wks of perseverance, I am getting min 250ml per session.

Pls don't give up so easily unless there's a medical condition ya.

I agreed with Shelled. With my experience (#1 failed to, but #2 success to breastfeed), it's extremely crucial, or almost the most important thing in BF is PROPER LATCH ON. You may opt to express milk later but in the initial days, if you baby latches on well, it's almost certain that you are going to BF successfully. While it's good to share and read information here, but it may not work for you cos we are all talking from our own experience. IF YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT BF, and you think you don't have milk, you don't have enough supply, or whatever problems you seems to face, go talk to a LACTATION SPECIALIST and get your problem solved NOW. Do not delay!

And yes, I also agreed with Jenifur, you should feel your breast (that your breasts turns full when milk is produced, then saggy after feed, and the cycle repeat, the changes maybe subtle though esp in the earlier day), the behavior of your baby (including wet diapers etc), the frequency of nursing, the sensation of let-down (if you can feel it), and not to look at how much you can pump. In the first 2 weeks or so, more often than not, you are not able to pump much, and you will be very discourage by the amount you can pump.

The way my gynae check whether I have milk or not while I was in hospital and the checkup 1week after delivery is to squeze my nipple and so if there is milk droplet on my nipple. You may use this to judge but still, get advise from the lactation consultant can solve most, if you all of your problems.

Good luck!!!

While from my #1 experience, you need to monitor baby closely if he/she has enough fluid intake or not. It's true that baby can get dehydrated but it's not a reason to turn to FM if you are very sure you want to TBF.

Finally I got some time to log in and post on thread.

Congrats to those who popped recently -

Both #1 and #2 is sick so I quarantine them from baby - mum wans me to take care of baby till she is 1mth old (for bonding purpose)
But I intend to let her slp in her room when she is 2 weeks old.
happy.gif

I'm so tired ever since baby arrived, my slp hrs is less then 5 hrs a day. Tot can rest during day time but #1 making so much noise so eventually equal to no rest.
I'm establishing my BF hence aggressively pumping and latching every 2-3hrs. Nw each pump I can produce ard 150ML.

Agreed wif Shelled on BF issue. Remember BF needs a lot of positive element - relax urself, dun be too stressful - demand = supply.

mamato6js and girlygirly, I reli salute u ladies - wondering how u cope with the noise and attention then able to still post on thread regularly.

posting here is a mean of releasing stress haha!! last wk was school holi my house was really like a zoo everyday! today all the kidds have gone back to school and with the older kids hvg cca n coming home late, its really PEACE for me!!

i also get barely enuf sleep but dunno why i dun feel sleepy in the noon??? i get abt 4-5 hrs of interrupted sleep since baby arrives but each time just recalling how blessed i am with all these kids, my tiredness seem to disappear?? its weird really. when i was preg i used to lament how do i cope with nite feeds, sending kids to school, supervising their school work, juggling so many things ard the house. nvm lah, i think just take one step at a time. dun stress! today i even woke up specially to prepare the kids to school. i think soon enuf i have to start my job of driving them ard cos i dunno how long hubby can tahan taking over my duties! now he knows how important i am :p

hi shelled

thanks for ur advise

unfortunately mine is both sides add together 40ml only..
sad.gif
and that is the max liao.

also, when baby latch, she only want to latch on one side per time, and each time less than 15 min, when i turn her to latch on the other side, she will refuse and cry very loudly....

Hi gals

I have decided to try to re-train Sam to latch. This pumping thing cannot go on.

I spend 15min to set up the pump & myself, pump 30min to get 100/120ml, spend 15min washing & sterlising the pumpsets & bottles, another 15min to feed Sam, and 15min to carry him ard b/c he tends to regurgitate. Haven't added in the time needed to calm him when he's crying, to eat, go toilet, like that where got time to rest??? I am gog crazy soon!

Pls pray for me that my efforts will succeed. Pray that Sam will not keep struggling & pushing away & crying to latch back on during latching. Pray that my milk supply & flow is enough to satisfy him. Thanks so much!

Hi, any experienced moms know when you can cut the baby's fingernails? I think I heard 2 weeks during the class but I can't remember...

Thanks.

Hi princess xiaomei and xueli

I'm not active in this forum but saw your posts that we have the same gynae.

My edd was supposed to be 13 Sep (quite close to xueli) but i went for c-section on 9 sep 09 after my visit with Dr Heng on 8 Sep 09. He advised me to go for induced or c-section cos bb weight seemed to go down, bb also not engaged, my blood pressure went up, water bag level lesser. I chose c-section.

I'm now back at home after 4 days stay at hospital.

Jul,

GOOD LUCK!!!

Just to share, I don't sterilise everytime I use the pump. Just sterilize once a day in the morning. Then after every use, keep all the stuff inside a box and place in the fridge. When want to pump again, just take it out from the fridge and use. This is taught by the forum mummies. So far okay for me. I am using Ameda dual pump, even the instruction manual said sterilze once a day. That way save you lots of time!

Hollow, don't be discouraged. When I started, both sides only 10ml - 20ml. Now, I can get max 90ml but usually only 60ml - 70ml. Still very little. I have to continue pumping though there have been thoughts of giving up.

Hollow

Agree with Shelled that 40ml is already v decent amt for now. It takes time for yr supply to build up.

Jul

Jia You... I'm also gng to re-train Jed to fully latch after his operation next mth. Let's encourage each other ya.

What I do with my pump parts is to steam sterilize every morning. Will rinse & soak w sterilizing tablet for bout 5 mins den remove to put in fridge too. It's much faster this way, if not can die lor

mummies,
here's a link with info about the ten best foods to increase milk production
http://tabithajoy.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/the-ten-best-foods-to-increase-milk-production-pdf.pdf

1. Oils and fats
2. Nuts
3. Fennel
4. Dark leafy greens
5. Herbal teas and tinctures
6. Garlic
7. Spices
8. Oats
9. Nutritional and brewer's yeast
10. Sesame seeds

i dun think such lists are scientifically proven. but i love to eat quakers oats with milo, and will prob eat loads of it after i've given birth since it's easy to prepare. so seeing oats on the list makes me happy =)

it is so encouraging to see mummies talking about how to BF successfully

for my #1, TBF until she was 7-month old as i found myself pregnant, gynae and PD advised me to stop BF-ing for the sake of #2.

this time round, i hope to TBF as long as possible. so far i haven't tried pumping, just latching every 3 hours, or as and when baby needs. at this moment, am not really interested to know the numerically value of amout of milk i can pump, am just interested if my boy is contented or not.

the tips of my nipples are bleeding, think the position on the first 2 days were not correct. it is painful, but i don't give up. especially my boy had jaundice (level 13.8 today sobz )... so i keep telling myself: I CAN DO IT!!!

to all mummies, let's jia you!!

Kam, which part of the ameda pump do you sterilise? I only did it once b4 the first use - boiling in hot water and subsequently, I just wash and dry. Do you use hot water or steam steriliser?

Hello, mummies.

I are glad to announce the arrival of my newly born baby boy - Issey Lim.
Date: 13 September 2009
Time: 2.55am
Weight: 3195g
Length: 49cm.
Baby is fine and I have discharged from hospital today.

bbq98,
I steam sterilize. All parts except the 2 top rubberish and plastic thingy. Some of my fellow forum mummies also said they don't sterilize the funnel (white) thingy, but I do.

WaiWai,
Good luck :)

My girl jaundice was 12.8, already went down to <8 after phototherapy. PD said she still has it and may not clear for another month or so cos I TBF. But there is no concern with the slight jaundice and no need sun bath also. But need to bring her back next week for another review to make sure everything is all right.

Someone asked about the JAUNDICE LEVEL. According to my PD, the cut-off level is 12. Usually the docs will admit the babies if jaundice level is >12.

hollow> is good to latch bb on one side at each time. cos dey will get foremilk n hindmilk. u juz got to keep moving her to suck. try tickling her cheeks, moving her chin, n massaging her feet. all these works for my boy. now he is better liaos.

jul> jiayou! we'll pray for u. if u wanna try on latchin. be persistend n dun relent n give him de bottle. this way it will motivate him to work for his milk. keke. hope i m right. =x

marie> i think its at bb full mth tgt with his haircut

kam> can like tat? i'll try tat method when i go back to wk. maybe i'll juz rinse them in hot water after every use n keep in container

jenifur> wat happen to jed? y does he need an op? sorry if i miss something. hope he's fine

waiwai> same. i oso dun care how much bb is drinking. juz latch him till he doses off, i put him to bed. n wait till he cry n i feed again. keke. been doing this for 11days. so far so good
happy.gif

dun give up. my boy jaundice was 15.9 at the start. but i still insisted on tbf irregardless of how much de nurse advise to go for fm. after dey realise tat i was insisting on tbf, dey suggested giving glucose water. i agree to glucose water only after i feed him with bm. n only cup feed. not bottle feed, cos i was afraid he will refuse to latch on after bottle feed
happy.gif

bbq98> i only sterilise de parts of ameda pump tat comes into contact with milk. de rest juz normal washing.

kam> from wat my pd say, any thing more den 12 he wun discharge bb. but if bb is oredi hm, anything more den 15, den need to readmit to hospital. else will be juz on hm phototheraphy, where we can rent de machines hm. so will not affect bf.

cos my boy jaundice went back to 14.2 after his discharge lvl of 11.9

Shelled, Mama26js

Yesterday was a really bad day for me. I didn't know that i will be depressed for this time round. Natalie didn't really slept much the whole of yesterday cos she keeps waking up wanting to feed. Morning & everning, the hourly feeding & long stretch of latching on the breast. She was not satisfied & keep crying. At 7.10pm, i give her FM.
sad.gif
I cried when MIL feed her.

My left nipple is inverted , the hourly feeding & latching has cos a very bad tear on it due to it bring put into Natalie throat on very feed. Right breast is not enough for her. I also quarrel with DH. It was a depressing day for me.

I called the BF hotline. The lady is very helpful. She mention cos i lack rest that is why the flow is slow for Natelie hence she latches on for very long.

I didn't really sleep due to Natelie sleeping schedule. Both mummy & baby are frustrated & tired.

Last nite, still wakes up to feed her FM cos i didn't store up on EBM. I cried alot & feel like crying now. I manage to pump EBM to keep today. Not alot though.

The lady from the TMC hotline told me to give her the good side but only latches her on for 15min - 20mins. Then get someone to feed her my EBM or abit of FM while i rest. (Nite time i dun think this will happen.) I still so angry with DH. Just now, still call and mention he will be home late....

I wish i got lots of supply for Natalie so even when tired, drop still got enough. This is so challenging.

Michelle

So, you also sterilise the rubber thingy which contracts and expands during suction and the white filter-like thingy which is the last thing to come into contact with the milk before it drops into the bottle?

Kam

I suppose you don't sterlise the rubber thingy which contracts and expands during suction ?

happy.gif

Confinement Lady>
I'm pretty impressed with my CL..
She's pretty good in my opinion...and it made everythign worth while...
she takes good care of me & bb..and she cooks pretty nice....
at least i eat is nice la...
and she tries new stuff daily...
everyday i'll ask her..whats for lunch and dinner tonite?? then she'll tell me..
hehehe...
She did ask what kind of things i'll eat and not eat la... so she roughly knows.. hehe..
she even wash apple bring to me...pour longan water bring to me... put lotion on my feet and wear socks for me..
so touched.. hahaha...really feel like a queen....
and she sleeps with me la... Hb sleep living room..easier for her to feed bb at nite also..
happy.gif

she eats anything as well..so not really cooking separate food...she prepares the sesame with ginger separately..
and i add them in into the dishes as and when i want to...
happy.gif

jenifur>
Point 2 says that dun offer bottles durin any fussy time.
So what can we do instead to calm down the wailing baby who is scraeming her lungs out?

mampoko>
wah!! u have 30ml of colostrum!! thats very good!!! jiayou jiayou!!
I'm on day 7 now..and its just getting more excited everyday....
on my way to TBF and i'm gonna shut up my CL & mum..
HB keep worrying that i'll be too stressed and often suggested FM at nite so that i can rest but i really rather latch on at nite too..
though its no easy feat to be up 3-4 times at nite..
but tats what a TBF mum gotta do!! :p

mama6>
yah.. i fed TBF bb in my 2 days at hospital..
it was the 3rd day that i came back that baby wail non stop...
i had to go back to hospital to find out whats wrong..
they said bb too hunry..and offered FM loh....
and then she stopped crying..
tats what the hosp advised....
it was the nurses in the nursery loh...
what can i do?? see her wail non stop??
i was only relieved when she finally stopped crying after the bottle of FM...
and they all convinced me that my milk wasnt enough and blame me this bad mama for starving my baby............ >.<"
she was fine surviving on my colostrum throughout the 2 days stay at the hosp....
it was when we returned home on 3rd day that she suddenly wail....even though i've latched her on for 2 hours..
thats why i didnt know what to do..and i was crying myself....

but i'm glad that production is building up..just pumped 60ml!! woohoo!!
gonna latch her when she's up later...

hi mummies! congrats to all the new mummies out there, and to all those who are waiting to pop too.

Jaundice
i just brought my little one to the PD today to get her jaundice level checked out. she was looking very orange on saturday. the test revealed a level of 18.1 but my PD was not fussed about it at all! he sent us back saying it's normal becoz she's a TBF bb and that it will sort itself out in 10 wks or so. if she's still jaundiced at 2 mths, then he'll order tests for the liver. no phototherapy needed! he even said sunning will not really solve the problem! gosh! so different from what the other PDs here are saying!

cho
Aiyo. sounds very scary indeed! But at least it is over. Thank God indeed.
Pls take extra good care of yourself now ok? I'm sure the labor + all that bleeding must have taken a toll on your body.

mampoko
Welcome! You might wanna try disturbing your bb's sleep though. Just to make sure he has truly finished his feed, before letting him sleep.
Most newborns are so super duper sleepy that they fall asleep at the breast or bottle before they are full! Then a short while later wake up and cry for milk again. *sigh*

Ning
Yup yup! The kind with a hole in the middle.

happykae

I like how you say you're "aggressively pumping and latching".
Aggressively wor!! Esp when you still have #1 and #2. Really salute you also lor!

mama to 6Js
Of course you are important lah! All mommies are important, but you are many times more impt than us cos you have many kids!
biggrin.gif

hollow
Maybe she has preference for 1 side more than the other? If that is the case, maybe you can pump 1 side while she latch on her favorite side.
At least this way, both sides are stimulated mah.
40ml is also milk! Don't let it affect you too much.
All of us will be pumping out different amts because our babies are of diff age, diff drinking style (some fast some slow), diff appetite. Not to mention we are using diff pumps also!
As long as bb is peeing/pooping properly, and is generally happy, then there's nothing for you to worry about.
happy.gif

(Pls note that some babies tend to fuss for no good reason like what my J did when he was younger. Don't think that it's because you're doing a bad job at BFing, ok?)

Waiwai
The 1st 2 days when K was born, I had 2 water blisters on my nipple leh. Very strange. I was wondering how come mommies who BF before still can kenna BF problems. Heng I'm not the only one lah!
lol.gif

Of course you can do it lah! You've done it before, definitely can do it again.
happy.gif

hui chern
Oh dear. But at least the hotline staff could give you some suggestions to solve your problem.

I notice my supply also drop if I don't get enough rest and/or water. After my engorgement went down, suddenly K needed to feed on both sides during each feed then he will be full. And i can feel that my boobs don't swell up as much anymore. So I just sleep whenever I can and drink water whenever i get thirsty. After 1-2 days like that, my boobs starting filing up very fast again.

Don't despair ok? Just sleep whenever you can. Bring bb to the room with you and just sleep and BF (and eat lah) and do nothing else for the time being. I know it's a bit hard since you still have #1, but regardless, you also need to rest more lor.

Pls take good care of yourself. *hugs*

Joon
welcome welcome!! u r back!

who is ur pd? my pd, dr belinda is also not concern abt mine being slightly jaundiced, esp tbf babies. they tend to clear their jaundice later. just that i hope he will be a bit fairer / less yellow on his full mth lah! as it is, only the corner of his eyes has a slight tinge of yellow.

its so nice to be able to be in the same thread with u again!! how's the gor gor doing???

hey shelled

thanks for your encouragement... so good to talk to u... tell my hb he will tell me if xin ku then dun breastfeed anymore...

last night I slp 1230am, woke up 2am for latching/pumping then slp at 315am. Woke up 430am for feeding again then slp at 5am. Woke up 6am to pump then slp at 620am. Woke up 7am to feed baby then slp again at 745am. Finally woke up at 9am. ---- this is my usual routine even since baby arrived. Very fast I will join panda club ord.

Huichern
Hugs - don't be despair. As what Shelled mentioned try rest together with baby. Maybe u can try to pump tis few days and feed baby with EBM till u hv sufficient rest then u resume latching session.

hollow
You're most welcomed.
When I starting BFing J, my hubs also told me if xinku then just don't BF anymore lor. I was sooooooo angry at him!
Instead of encouraging me to jiayou, he just say this kind of thing?? It felt like he also don't believe that I can TBF lor. Like, 看不起我 like that.
But after I quarrel with him, he told me he didn't mean it that way. What he mean is that see me so xinku and engorged until so pain, he heartpain, so would rather I don't BF if its really too much for me.
Maybe your hubs also means it that way. Love you, so don't want to see you so xinku mah.

Wah! Now I double salute you!!
I imagine my boobs will feel very "abused" if I'm BFing both lor!

Michelle, ok, I shall start sterilising the pump :p

For all of you who bf and/or pump, do you clean your breasts with a warm cloth before you start every session?

how old r ur kiddos? i'vs got 3 older boys at hm, u can imagine how rough they play. i cant imagine 1 more will join them as soon as he starts running!

u r really hardworking. im so in awe of u!!! how u manage to wake up so many times at nite to pump??

huichern
*hugs* i cant imagine how tough it is for u but u r already one foot in, hang it there ok. shelled is right. lack of rest will hinder supply / flow. maybe u can try to nurse lying down so u can rest as bb latches? we r all in this together so fell free to voice your frustrations / feelings here.

so angry, today just found out that there is no cash portion baby bonus for 5th child n beyond but govt is giving 18k of cda. so weird ask ppl to give birth to more but so stingy.

Hi mummies... thanks for sharing so much info on bf'ding while at the same time working hard on latching and pumping too. my edd is this thurs and i hv been worried abt not able to bf my bb when she arrived. the info posted here are so detailed and im already very touched with all the encouragement given to mummies who are having difficulties in bf'ding. just wanna say thanks...

well, mummies who are currently in great pain over bf'ding, serious sleep deprivation, dealing with insensitive husbands, hope you keep it up and stay strong. you can do it.

bbq98> lol. i nv. esp at nite. oredi so tired. still got time to think of cleaning. every nite bb cry is cl bring bb in. i oredi in stone mode =x

mamato6js> lol. but 18k of cda acct is alot wor. =p

ah goh> keke. of cos must motivate one another. cos at times definitely will feel frustrated. esp when u r super tired, bb refuse to latch n keeps crying =p just got to hang on there

hollow

if u cant get enough support from ur hubby, then need to find another outlet for u to vent and get support. dont force it.

my husband can be insensitive at times, whenever he is not in the mood to be one. i can actually foresee him pissing me off with his insensitivity so i was hoping he doesnt spend too much time with me during confinement, which is the most crucial period to rest, to be at peace, to rest, and to nurse. if i ever need support, will get from friends and reading the posts here.

rest well and ur milk will come in soon. i rmb kam mentioned before this b4. jia you...

Hi guys if ur bb got jaundice problem go to the chinese medical shop and ask them for medicine just buy $2/- and you get alot it's like a fruit of a plant, smash it and take go and boil. The water will become yellow and pour to mix with cold water and bath ur bb for 3 days and he/she will be much better. My mum brought frm SG it's very effective try it guys... :> My boy now super fair and free frm Jaundice he does not need any photo therapy.
