haha since when me and shelled become lactation consultant? anyway i just answer according to my best knowledge hor, hope dun give u wrong info!

i use medela dual pump, usually only pump max 20 mins each time cos v pain lah! feel like my nipples kena pull n pull gg to drop off!. i did hear the change evry 5 min theory but so far never tried it before cos i hv always been using double pump, easier n faster to achieve letdown. maybe shelled has an answer to this?

how old is ur baby? if after feeding stil can yield 30ml v good already mah! actually when u do direct latching, baby is able to suck more out of ur breast than what the pump can do leh. if she is satisfied after a feed, has enogh wet diapers n poo, then she must be full, dun worry. i know we r doubtful whether we can feed the baby well by direct latching cos we wont know how much baby is taking other than relying on all these signs. but once u get the hang of it, its really easy. give urself few weeks. initial few weeks is the hardest, both for the mom n baby. we both need to adjust n work as a team lor so give both of u some time.

c section is 4days 3 nites natural is 3 days 2 nites mah. it has always been like that unless ur gynae allows u to discharge early.

how is the engorgement? if hot compress doesnt work, try cold cabbage but dun leave it on for too long.

some babies refuse to latch on when the mom has engorgement. u try to squeeze some milk out to soften ur nipple first. when u r engorged ur nipple also v hard leh hard for baby to grip!

when all else fails, pls seek help from an LC early and save urself all the distress. i know engorgement sucks!

From what I know, our breast actually really only makes one type of milk, the higher-fat milk that we typically think of as hindmilk.

It's just that as our breast produce the milk, the fats tend to stick together &amp; onto the walls of the alveoli in our breast. The milk will moved out the nipple when "production" is ongoing, leaving the fats stuck further back at our milk duct. Hence the longer the time between feedings, the lower the fat content at the beginning of the next feeding. If feedings are closer together, you're starting off with a higher fat content.

Hence when our breast starts to empty, the fats will begin to dislodge and move down the ducts (let-down facilitates this process). So the further into the feed, the higher the fat content of the milk, as more and more fat globules are forced out. The end result is that the milk gradually increases in fat as the feeding progresses.

It is possible, depending upon nursing pattern, for fat content to be higher at the beginning of a particular feeding than it is at the end of some other feeding.

Because every baby varies in the amount of time it takes to receive his fill of the higher-fat milk at the end of the feeding, it is important not to switch breasts while baby is actively nursing.

Or what you can do is to xpress at 2hrly interval, irregardless of whether baby is nursing. This will help to push the fats out too</font>

I give Jed a fixed amt of EBM @ every feed. I only increase when he cries repeatly for milk much much earlier then his so called stipulated milk time, per increase is by 5ml. How I estimate e 1st feed amount for all my children is to divide 750ml by e no of feeds in 24hrs.

Eg. if yr baby nurses ard 8 times per day so (750/8) = 93.75 (can round up to 95)

Do keep in mind that the amount of milk that baby takes at a particular feeding will vary, just as the amount of food and drink that an adult takes throughout the day will vary.

Re Let-down

Not all will feel let-down during nursing or xpressing. Actually milk typically lets-down several times during a feed so how you notice is that baby's sucking slows &amp; swallowing increases. This is because baby is trying to keep up w e flow of milk. @ times u might even see milk in e corners of yr baby's mouth or they might choke if yr let down is too forceful. Yr body will feel more relaxed.

Went for check up this morning.. did CTG and my contractions are still irregular. Baby's heartbeat still okay. My weight start to drop already. ): By next week still haven't deliver and back to his clinic, i might have to induce. ): Feel so lost leh. After that went to walk walk walk and while walking, i was really tired and keep feeling so tired and aching at my V area... plus keep feeling ticklish at there.. much more loh.. don't know why also. LOL!

TIL NOW I STILL DARE NOT TO PUMP &amp; BOTTLE FEED?!

today i go for post natal massage, in the middle bb ask for milk, then i got to stopped &amp; wash my breast area, HOW?!

the massage lady ask me to pump and let my hubby feed if im massaging and bb need milk.

MY I STILL have my worries :-
Will BB refuse to latch after tried of bottle feeding?
Will my nex supply of milk sufficient for bb after pumping out, or how many hours will milk supply after pump?
How to bring EBM out? i have cooler bank/fridge to go..how to warm it up, shld i bring thermo container and warm up the milk?

Im still very confuse about EBM &amp; Latching. very very worry bb wun latch anymore after i start combination of EBM.


BTW, Hospital give me alot of glass bottles, and i bot the cap from pharmarcy at S$1. how to use these bottle and can i sterlize together with my pigeon sterlizer?

oh ya, Can breastfeeding mummies, keep eating sweets? i duno why, i keep eating sweets after i poped...

very jialuck, now i understand why shelled need to do alot of things during confinement,.. really cant help it..

i bath bb, i wash laundry, i was dishes &amp; etc... still cant prevent not touching water.. still need to wash private part leh.. still water...

my numbness hands did not go away sigh.... today then i jus start to try post natal massage...

CUz during my delivery i hav maximum Tear.. OUGH!!!! anus stitches take longer to heal and its very very Painful........ cant sit cant lay cant stand well , cant walk well, so only wait til anus area painful slightly better then i go for my post natal massage..but disappointed by bb crying for milk...

e Chinese physican feel my pulse &amp; said I'm too "weak", need to "bu". He said I nv nourish back my health after c-sect then plus now bf-ing. He said no matter what BB will always b able to get nutrient from EBM. But mummy will suffer if dun "bu" cuz baby will then be drawing from reserve.

So all mummy... please do rem to eat yr vitamins or tonic as long as you are bf-ing</font>

As for e herbs for Jaundice, u jus go to Chinese medical hall &amp; tell them u need it for baby's Jaundice. They will pack for you. There's 2 types of herbs.. you are suppose to bathe BB w e herbs &amp; also put 1 small packet in BB's pillow.

This didn't work for my #2 though. He had Jaundice all e way till he turns 1 mth old despite bathing in the herbs numerous times</font>

My check-up today... He see CTG, Baby heartbeat ok, Mi no contration... Can still wait for 1 week but must count baby movement at least 10 times a day between 9am to 9 pm. If not choose a date... Haha...

for me, i only started feeling letdown when baby turned exactly 1 week old! before that during breastfeeding, there are some particular times when i felt funny in my tounge and have the sudden urge to drink water. now after i started feeling the let down, then i realise these urges actually coincide with my letdowns. so cute right. i never felt these before during my previous breastfeeding experiences with my older kids. usually during let down, my other boob will feel painful and tingling runs down the milk tissues. for eg, if i feeding on my right, during letdown my left will feel painful. so now whenever i suddenly feel like drinking water during feeding i know letdown is coming.

just like what jennifur said, u will also hear baby swallowing more frequently and her sucking is deep. some ppl got such forceful letdown baby will unlatch cos cant keep up with flow.

i think if u only bottle feed once a day should be ok la. so far my baby is doing fine with one bottle a day though he still prefers the breast. my mom said he is not that enthusiastic when drinking from bottle though he will still finish it eventually.

ur milk supply will definitely be enuf for next feed. in fact if u go to ameda website, it states that u can even pump an hour before ur next feed and ur baby will still have enuf. besides no pump can be better than ur baby so even if u think u have emptied the breast by pumping there will be some leftover milk in ur breasts.

u gg back to work eventually too right? so u need to accustom baby to bottle also. maybe a mth before u start work? i not too sure abt this cos have not done it before. jennifur will be able to addvise u.

as for bringing ebm, why need to bring when u intend to latch baby on? unless u doing exclusive pumping?

the herb that the old folks believe to treat jaundice is "jin yin hua" (michelle correct me if im wrong?) its a yellow flower and u bath the baby with it. i tried b4 cos my #4 jaundice was very bad and i have exhausted all avenues to try to bring down the jaundice. a week after bathing the baby with it, it came down. i also dunno whether its the herb that works or it just went off naturally cos he was drinking more n passing more urine.

ur pd all like to prick n prick baby to test for jaundice hor? poor babies leh. my baby joseph also has slight jaundice but pd never bother to test the level, same with my gal last time. she said so poor thing prick their heels v pain one! unless baby is v v yellow, if not just leave it alone it will go off as long as baby is hydrated.

Not sure if induce will deliver on that day itself or next day then will deliver.. must ask those induce before already.. but i really hope no need to induce!! Did he mention you have to induce or what? Your weight still going up? I already have difficulty in walking properly.... really look like some penguin! >.<

every mummy's milk composition is different, so it is possible that your milk contains a smaller layer of fat than milk coming from other mummies, perhaps because of your physiology or diet? for me, my milk had a good amount of fat, but was sorely lacking the immunity substance, most prob because my body's immunity is not normal (eczema and all). that's why even when i breastfed fully, my boy still had bad allergies. this info abt my milk actually came from my galfriend cos i was regularly donating EBM to her in the past. she was doing a PhD on breastmilk then, and could compare my milk composition in the lab with those belonging to other mummies. one of my very slim mummy friend who survives on very healthy food (low fat, non-diary diet) had very little fat content in her donated milk, not surprisingly.

bbq98> u know y u only get foremilk? cos u latch on one side for too short. hindmilk only comes in if u latch on long enugh on each side. i recommend feeding ur boy on one side for 30mins n switch to de other side only when it doesnt seem enugh for him. seldom i feed him both sides. unless he is not satisfied after 20-30mins, den i'll change sides.

falling asleep is very common in bb, even if u still got milk in de breast. juz got to keep trying to pull ur nipple out or massage him to wake him up.

ur bb got jaundice? u wanna try de bath too? i think it's called "wa guo zai". u juz tell de chinese medical shop is for bb to bathe one. den dey know liaos. juz buy 1bucks worth of it, ask dem grind all, den keep 2 ungrinded.

de 2 ungrinded ones put in ap n put below bb's pillow. de rest of de grinded ones, seperate into 3portions to bathe bb for 3 days. need more details can ask me. but i think i very in-depth liao.

mamato6js> no leh. mine is not jin yin hua. my boy got pricked like 5times in all liao. first time 15.9, second 11.9 (after phototeraphy), third 14.2, forth 13.9, fifth 7.9 (after washing with herb), well dunno if de herb or wat. but one mum at de clinic i met juz told me. as long as bb dun eat de herb, no harm done, so can juz try. cos only bathe with it n put 2 in bb pillow.

Umbilical Cord

can i just check with u all ar.. my ger's umbilical cord dropped just awhile ago, but two days ago started to bleed a little before it dropped.. then when the diaper push/brush against it, she cried like super cham.. like relli damn painful.. isit normal? then just now it dropped off.. she also cried like damn cham.. until i also cry lo.. super heartpain to see her cry liddat.. then my mum also not at home cos she went to fairprice extra to buy groceries, so hb n i were like at total lost dunno what to do to ease her pain..the cries relli diff from the usual hunger cries.. isit normal or not?

When ur bb's umbilical cord drop off.. will they cry until damn jialat cos of the pain?

Then i cried n kept saying sorry to my ger cos mummy veri stupid.. duno what to do.. haiz.. I relli feel stupid lo..
 
Hi hi, shelled (shelled), thanks for the encouragement. Hope I can make it thru bf. Bot some nursing bras from BP Fave nursing bras. Quality not bad &amp; quite cheap as compared to what I have seen at kiddy palace &amp; marks n spencer leh. Can wear as normal bra if dont bf.

recently having alot of braxton hicks.. gynae said i shd be due anytime le..

That's v interesting..now I know why my #1 is the most chubby among e 3 cuz I ate lots of salmon sashimi when I was breastfeeding her.

So e ans to bbq98's problem is to eat more food with higher fat content to produce more fats in the BM &amp; shorten her feeding/pumping interval so can "push" e fats out, rite?

Can I ask u a question bout allergy? I occassionally will get rashes after eating prawns. Do I need to stop my children from eating it?</font>

When bb only takes 1 breast, I usually offer the other breast for the next feed. I only pump the untouched breast if I need to stock up on some EBM.
Letdown reflex is a tingly feeling that you'll feel around your areola area (some mommies feel it in their entire breast) shortly after bb starts to suckle or shortly into pumping. Kinda feels a bit like when you enter a cold room and your nipples get erect? (Sorry, dunno how else to describe it leh.)
Think of it like a flood gate lor. Even if it's not open, milk still can flow out, but in smaller quantities and slower flow. But once opened, milk flows fast and furious!

There's no hard and fast rule about how long mommies should pump. Or which method is "better". But what I'd always advise is to empty out your breast completely when pumping. It'll stimulate more milk supply this way mah. Also, means your bottle of EBM will have both foremilk and hindmilk.

Best way to find out what works for you is to try the various techniques and methods to find out which one suits your lifestyle and needs best. JIAYOU!

Maybe you can try what I do? I BF bb 30mins before starting massage. 10mins to latch, 5 mins to burp/change, then remainder 15mins for me to settle him down to nap. Then when auntie arrive, can go do massage without worry!
If you have ppl to help take care of bb, even easier lah. Just BF then let someone else take over when u doing massage. But curious leh, why your postnatal massage is do outside de? They don't do home visit mah??

After the boys fell asleep, I play Guitar Hero with my friends and chit chat (more like gossip). Wah... so shiok. So long never hang out with my friends liao. I'm surprised I actually still have friends at the rate I keep holing up at home with my boys.

So fast my boy almost 1 mth old already! So... are we gonna arrange 4th gathering for the popped mommies?? Playdate! playdate!!

Ok, now I go wake K to BF, then i go zzzzz. Later massage lady coming @ 11am to rub rub wrap wrap me. So far can tell tummy go down even more liao, but still look 4mths preg! Before starting massage was 5mths preg! Jialat!!

Last nite was hell for me. Natalie latches on almost every hr from 7pm - 12am. Then finally she sleep thru till 3am then wake up to feed. She latches on 1 breast from then and when to sleep. Last feed as 7am.

I find she seem to be training my nipples to take the abuse. *Cross my fingers* nipples less sore now. I pray that it will totally be gone. Now only sore when she latches on, then few secs after into feeding no more pain. I looking forward to a painless breastfeeding time

I'm also VERY SCARED of PAIN! Some of them mentioned INDUCE, quite pain right??? ):

But then again if our weight goes up, or remain the same, despite eating much more, doesn't prove baby is the one getting the nutrients too leh.... so i think we better trust ROGER! LOL! if ur baby is latching on well then there is no need for u to pump for the time being unless u cant be there to latch her on right? for me, initial days is good to latch baby as frequent as she wants to build up supply. after that if u r a ftwm, u can start to pump the following mth to keep stock.

oh mine was like that too. last nite so tam jiak kept waking to feed. i so zombified until i forgot which breast i fed during the last feed.

My #1 was on BM + FM. He didn't poo for a few days. PD gave him some "bullet" to help him poo. But when we reached him, he pooed normally without the needs of the bullet. If you are really worry, pay a visit to the PD. Usually the stool of the FM fed baby is more solid, so more difficult to poo. Old people said drink water will help, but no scientific proof, you can try.
 
Hi Mummies... wah the thread has progressed so fast.. Just got time to log in now. I have delivered baby Eliza yesterday evening at 7pm. Will log in later to share my birth story with everyone. Anyway, was supposed to be induced natural labour, end up had to do an emergency c-sec. Now resting at TMC, I had a autoupgrade from a 4 bedder to a 2 bedder. And the best part is, I dun have a neighbor, so technically, i'm enjoying a 'one-bedder' room.. lolz.

She weighs 3.645kg, head circumference is 35cm.

hey dun say ownself stupid...u r juz an inexperienced mommy...my gal's stump dropped off on day 7 bt she din cry leh...so i supposed shldn't be painful?? coz for all my gals, when the stump dropped it juz drop lor...

so did the area bleed? then u can take her to PD if u r worried. or she cld very well cry for other reasons?? I always believe in bringing baby to the PD if i feel worried. juz to put my mind at ease coz bb can't talk and i don't like guessing games either...

my birth story is pretty short ba... been having contractions throughout the day but at irregular intervals so i just ignore it thinking it's BH. Then at 8pm when me and hubby went out for dinner, started to feel that the contractions is 10mins apart but no pain so hubby says could be practice contractions. Then went home and bathe ard 10pm and found some blood flow out. Told hubby and we decided to monitor. Then at 11+, still got some bleeding with contractions and cramps, so called up the helpline and spoke to my gynae. She advises that i can admit if i cant slp or if i can slp then i can admit tmr morn. So decide to slp ard 12mn but the cramps got more pain and contractions started to be more intense. So woke up at 2+am then realise bleeding got more. So woke hubby and decide to head down to TMC. Reach TMC ard 3am and was checked that i'm 3cm dilated. Moved to the delivery room to wait and 4am found that more blood flow out and already 6cm dilated. was still commenting to hubby how come no one comes to give me epidural since hubby has opted for natural with epi when he admitted me. Then at 4.30am, when waterbag broke, the pain started to be unbearable. So was told to take oxygen to breathe better. At 5am decided to ask for pain relief but was told it's too late cos already 7-8cm dilated. so can only continue to breathe the oxygen which i found out was the laughing gas cos i was shivering when i breathe non-stop. 5.30am - gynae arrived and get ready for the push. After 3 contractions and pushes along with them, my bb is out at 6am lor. So i managed to survived the labour with no epi!! super fast labour for me too.

it's so sore and i already having nipples crack...

but i think bb is not drinking enuff and keeps wanting to latch till nipples is sored and cracked.. just requested for glucose to be given to her otherwise my breasts will be abused! she keeps screaming and crying loudly after every feed.. about 15mins per breast.. really dont know wat to do.. felt super stressed... hope my milk comes in faster... otherwise will be more stress when i go home... wish me gd luck!!
