Huishan,

Morning ladies!

huishan: me! haha i thinking of buying 2nd hand to try first though :x

oh btw, those mummies with DH, is yours a new or a transfer maid? Thinking of getting transfers as they have experience and loan is cheaper but my main concern is why they are being transferred out.

my mum even asked me to go back miri to find and pay for her air tix to and fro...

Morning everyone !!

Everyone quite gear up to breastfeed your bb. Thou this is #2. I got no idea. #1 i didn't.

It is necessary to buy the milkbags, nursing pads now? I'm trying to save as much $ i can. Cos last time brought the manual breast pump. But no milk comes out. I got zero knowledge. Breasts did not even engorge. My mum was puzzle herself.

I really evny mummies that got lots of milk to give.

Jenifur/shelled/mama26js
Do you breastfeed yr bb often when staying in the hospital after birth. Cos i read bb must feed 8 -12 times a day. So meaning we can't really sleep cos bb need to be fed the whole night ?

When will the milk start kicking in after birth ? Thanks cos i really very lousy.

Hi hui chern

I think for the beginning u don't have to buy alot since you will be latching your kid right? But one month before you going back to work, you need to start to stock up already.

For me, I breastfeed my gal straight after birth. Not much milk initially.

Hi all

I remember reading posts about a shop selling cheap baby clothes, mittens and botties near guan yin temple at bugis. Any idea if it's open on sunday? cos planning to go there this sunday.

Tks.

Hi Angeline, my sis did mention to me before.

i found a thread with directions:

If you stand in front of the temple's main entrance (back facing the temple), you'll see a building with lots of shops selling dry goods/ chinese medicine on the ground floor.

The shop is the left-most corner unit on the ground floor.

Oh and they don't follow retail hours since they are wholesalers.

Some of my friends insists that Avent is the best. I had a friend who used Ameda and she didn't like it. Some of my friends said Medela is noisy. And I understand that different ladies find different breastpump more effective that others, probably cos of the differing shape of our breasts.

I heard that there's somewhere that you can 'try out' different breastpumps before you buy but this will prob have to wait till your baby comes out and the milk has flowed.

Ya,

I guess it really depends on individual. I heard that Medela PIS and Ameda Lactaline is the best for electric pump and Avent is the best for manual pump. Not sure how true it is.

hi mtb, I have an extra box of Dhaxtra softgel 430MG 30'S for sales, to be use by OCT 2011. Please PM me if you are interested.

RE: Breast pump

According to the mummies in Jan08 thread who has successfully breastfed (I myself only breastfed for 6 weeks and considered a "failed" case :-(), they shared that Avent manual is the best pump to be used for the first few weeks to establish the milk supply, esp if baby doesn't latch on well/frequent. Once the milk flow is established and stabilized, then switch to electrical one, some prefers Avent, some prefers Medela, and Ameda is the rare one they talked about (maybe not because it's not good, but just not as popular as the other two). Hope this info is helpful.

Thanks Kam for the info. Oh so for the beginning it's better to use manual pump first.
I have a headache choosing the breast pump, steriliser and warmer. Thinking of getting Avent ones for steriliser and warmer. Just wondering if any bottle can fit into them.

<font color="0000ff">hi Rach,</font>

hw r u? long time no chat..
happy.gif
, i saw ur BB's stuff list.. wow u bought so much Huggies Newborn diaper neh.. 4 pkts ohhh..

i remember my 1st pregnancy, i buy 1 pkt wit 52pcs Mamypoko Newborn diaper (fr nite time use). too sad my boy only use few pcs nia coz his a big boy &amp; grow very fast neh.. his birth weight is 3.95kg.
emm... we do not knw how big is our BB so dun keep too many stock 1st... (^.^)

<font color="0000ff">Huishan,</font>

i buy 15pcs One-size bumwear diapers &amp; 15pcs inserts but i only use 10pcs bumwear &amp; 10pcs inserts. keep 5pcs bumwear &amp; inserts as stock.

i use ard 5-6pcs in a day time. nite time i use mamypoko diaper. i was dry the inserts under the sun so very fast to dry up in a day. if u dry in the house then i think u need more inserts lo.. coz the insert very thick &amp; need few days to dry up..

below is my little boy wearing bumwear at 9 mth yrs old ..

Wah 3.95kg! He sure is one strong boy with a strong mummy! I cannot imagine my girl so big, some more my tummy so small >.<

Yeah.. my sis told me to get 1 pack of huggies newborn first coz don't know how big she will be and how fast she will outgrow the diapers.

For Ameda i think i read that its one of the better breast pumps around but they not really that easy to get i think. I only saw a few companies bringing in. Hehe..

Headache ah when it comes to breast pumps. Then still got the storage thing... oh dear.. can anyone provide me with a step by step guide from buying pumps to storing of breast milk and washing and defrosting and and and.......especially how to pump at work! I scared the pump make a lot of noise in the toilet and the whole world will know i pumping >.<

great! i just found this list of what to get for newborn:

http://www.mumcentre.com/index.php?option=com_essentials&amp;cid=7

Got to go for the 3d scan already! BBL! ^^v

yes i have been experiencing for 2 months. i went to see GP. he gave me pain killer. i never even take any cos i think no point.

Went to chinese physician. she helped me massage. said my back got some veins got blockage. she helped me massage. but problem come back again.

of cos she suggest going back for more massage to ease the blockage. or i can massage my hand(she claims can relieve the pain). she taught where to press. But back home, i jus cannot find the spot to press. haiz.

now is bearable. so On and off i will go for massage to ease the pain.

hui chern / Re: BFing
I started leaking a bit of milk since about 2 mths ago... But milk only properly come in abt 1-2wks after delivery, as in the engorgement type lor. I BF my #1 in the hospital as well. There's a sign on his wrist and bed that says "TBF baby", and the nurses will bring him to me every 3 hrs for feed. I couldn't keep him in the room with me because I took 2-bed ward, and they said will disturb my roommate. This time round I'll be taking 1-bed ward, so I hope to keep BB with me as much as possible. As for feeding at night, yes, you'll need to wake up every 2-4 hrs to feed baby (depending on your bb's schedule). My #1 fed every 3hrs until he turn about 1 mth old, then it was once every 4hrs.

But if you want the honest truth from me, I will tell you BF is so much easier than FM lah. Imagine you have to wake up at night, go kitchen make milk, hold the bottle and feed baby, then wash bottle. If you BF, you just pick up BB, expose your breast, and pop baby on. Then you can go back to sleep leh! Nothing to wash, and don't even need to leave the room if BB is sleeping with you!!
lol.gif
If you wanna sleep nonstop 6 hrs, just get someone to give BB EBM. My hubs would often take 6am feed last time, so I can sleep from 3am to 9am nonstop. Cos he said 3am go heat up EBM... troublesome leh.

When you go out with BB, you don't have to bring anything extra except maybe a extra pair of breastpads &amp; a towel to clean up drips/spills. If on FM, you have to bring bottles, water, milk powder... Aiyo so troublesome! My #1 change to FM when he was 6 mths old, and first few times we went out, we so blur we forgot to blur milk powder &amp; bottles lor! Cos we were so used to having a walking milk machine (aka ME).

I really really recommend BF if mommies can do it, because:
1) Cost savings – FM not cheap. And there will be wastage cos BB cry, u think he/she hungry, but they actually not and dunwan to drink it. Milk throw away.
sad.gif

2) Easy and convenient – Very few things to wash/sterilise/bring out/buy.
3) Best for baby – This one, I'm sure we all know.
happy.gif

4) Bonding with baby – My #1 used to give me this "i love you so much" look whenever I BF him, and it always melted my heart.
5) You lose weight from BF if you watch what you eat.

Sorry very long post, but with all that said &amp; done, if you cannot keep up with BFing because of work or milk supply problems, then of course logically will have to take the FM route lah. I'm not those BF activist who will throw rotten eggs at you if you don't BF, what I feel is that if it's better for baby, cheaper, more convenient, why use FM?

berrypie
Bumwear has One size pocket diapers that will fit babies from 5kg to 2+ yrs old, as well as training pants that come in sizes. If you're buying the starter kit, just buy the one size pocket diapers, cos training pants are more for potty training uses, so you won't need it until bb is much older.

WeldonMummy
My boy couldn't use nappy liners leh. Even if I put it between the nappy and not directly on his bum. He broke out in horrid horrid horrid bumrash from the stupid liners. So I gave up and just use disposables. I think if you ask me now, I also cannot really remember how to fold cloth nappies lor!
lol.gif

Yeah, I get on/off numbness also. Something like carpal tunnel syndrome. But I notice going for massage helps to keep that away probably due to improved blood circulation.

Kam / Re: Breast pumps
Honestly, I believe latching on bb directly during the first few wks is the best way to increase milk supply. Afterall, most mommies will be on ML right? No matter how good a pump is, it won't be able to exactly replicate the hormonal stimulation that baby suckling will create.

After giving birth, I suggest asking the hospital's lactation specialist (if any) to come round and help demo how to latch on bb correctly and efficiently. I had Mrs Wong Boh Boi (TMC) help me latch my #1 on, and I believe it was a great boost in my breastfeeding journey. She said moms usually get sore/cracked nipples because the latching position is not correct. I myself had BLEEDING nipples on the 2nd day of BFing in the hospital lor, that's why had to ask her to come help. But after that one short session where she show me how to latch bb on, the rest of the 6 mths of BFing, I never ever had sore/cracked nipples at all!

milkyway> we didnt start buying till the expo fair on thur...and the rest were bought on Monday...
hahaha..so in a span of 5 days..we bought all those things.. hehehe....
since now got money quickly buy first before the $$ are gone...then we cant buy anything again.. hehehe.. :p

Jess> hahaa.. i guess the list helps in the long term.. in case i need to compare prices and decide to buy or not.. i can always take out my excel sheet..
hahahaha... :p

cho> but we are different.. coz I am REALLY one of them... esp i'll wait for the ones frm Prudential to ask me..
the rest i wont give them a chance to ask me..coz i'll walk away as fast as i can.. hahaha.. :p

Chern> but 1st few days got colestrum rite? did u have that?? milk will come only ard 4th day usually...
are u going for prenatal class this time round??
since u are almost like a #1.. ahhaha.. then u might wanna consider to go and learn it?
Or go for those BF group discussion??
then can urself geared up and prepared for BF-ing..
happy.gif

Jiayou! You can do it!
happy.gif

My coll ah... not very endowed loh..but she got plenty of milk...
She has 70 Avent bottles now all filled with milk...she got problem of storage...
now she pour away old ones to fill in new ones...
each time she has about 45ml from each breast....
and i tell u..she is those AA cup one loh..

So the size of the breasts really dun tell anything de....

Corinne> i think for Avent Sterilizer.. u need to use Avent bottles..its made that way...unless ur bottles are smaller than Avent..then it'll fit..
For Pigeon..they dun have the stands...so any bottles can be used inside..
happy.gif

WeldonMummy> hahahhaa... i'm ok la..just very busy last week..
today resting at home... now machiam like old liaoz...cannot just chiong for 7 days a week..
i think coz we are carrying bb also la....

So once in a week, i'll try to stay home and do nothing much except to rest.. hehehe.. :p

Errmm... 96 diapers ok la..supposed they use 8-10 a day...then can use about 10-12 days nia...
most 2 weeks..so should be ok loh...
I hope my princess wont outgrow the Newborn packs so fast... hahaha..if left overs.. i can sell it to those who need it la.. hahahhaa.. :p
I'm early sept..those end sept can wait to get my leftovers....and we can share what we have in excess here also.. heheh..;p

u only using for nite time ma.. i most likely will use throughout loh...

Shelled> if we are breastfeeding wat are the things we cant eat during confinement also huh??
like those french lang jiu...(some kind of wine)...Yomeishu... etc... rice wine... can we take???

sounds like u had to pay for her to come and teach u to latch on??
the Breast Feeding session at Expo last thur was taught by her...
it was a good session on understanding BF issues....
she's really good la...
happy.gif

But too bad Mt A wont have her.. hahaha...

If you don't mind washing diapers, and you want something soft and comfy for baby, I definitely feel Bumwear is worth the price. Because for regular cloth nappies, there will come a stage when bb will move around a lot and it will be difficult to put the nappy on, and KEEP it on. And the leakage!! *faints* The elastic thigh area keeps everything inside, so you won't get a pee/poop trail on your floor.

rach
No need to pay lah! She'll do daily visits in the wards of BF moms, and give advice if needed. As for us, my hubs kancheong cos got blood coming out from my nipples, so he went to her office and asked her to come save me. We also took her antenatal classes, so she already knew us. But regardless, lactation specialists will come and give simple advice lor. If you want those 1 hour sessions, then have to pay lah.

I didn't drink any alcoholic tonics at all. I just ate whatever the confinement catering brought, and even then I ate little cos I don't like confinement food. There are alot of views on whether can take those tonic wines or not, but at the end of the day, it's up to you lor. Although WARNING, some bb break out in rash as a reaction to the alcohol content.

shelled,

Totally agree! Baby's suction is the best pump of all. I was sharing that, if, for any circumstances that baby refuses to latch or cannot latch, then maybe the manual Avent is the best one based on others experience.

And thanks for sharing your successful bf story. My "failure" was due to low milk supply and some other issues. But I won't say more here cos it'll discourage 1st time mummy. Nonetheless, for #2, I am very very very determine to make it a successful story!!! I will try and try and endure and persist!!! Now I got a lot of experienced bf mummies from the Jan08 thread to give me advise on. Yes, you are right, getting an expert to consult on the initial latching is critically important. This time round, I will ask for Mrs Wong to come and take a look (if she is willing to since I didn't attend her class this time round, but still her ex-student mah), even if she charges at premium, I think it's all worthwhile! Thanks again for sharing!

hui chern... during hospital stay for my #1, the nurse asked me to breastfeed baby every 3 hours. at night the nurse brought baby to me to feed at 12 midnight and 4am even though baby was sleeping.

flower4... yes, me also have numbness in hands, especially at night when sleep. gynae gave me some vitamin B, think it helps a bit

re: bum wear
think i'm not getting bum wear before baby starts solid food at 6 months... breastfed baby's poo is very watery and difficult to wash... me lazy lah :p

re: storing BM
i used glass bottles and sometimes milk bags. took many bottles from hospital keke. milk bag is not cheap and can't be recycled

my bb's expenses so far.... still okay leh...

re: breastfeeding
Mrs Wong from TMC is really good. i had difficulty in latching on 1st day, my hubby called her and she came to my rescue!

shelled> ooh... coz my mum wanna cook with those wine inside... but dunno can or not....
Mmmm...she said if BF most likely cannot.. but would like to get some professional advice on it.. Mmmm..

if you drink before bf, the alcohol will go into your blood stream and then baby might get a share of it. So advise to consume right after bf, so your body still have 2-3 hours to clear out alcohol. But of course, the basic rule is - consume alcohol in moderation! You won't be drinking/eating alcoholic stuff the whole day right.

rach..

If im not wrong, its ok de.. When using wine in cooking, ur suppose to cook till the alcohol content evaporates before we eat de.. Just let it simmer in low heat once cooked lo..

Kam
Don't say it until like that lor. At least you tried, and now can learn from experience! As they say in Chinese, "failure is the mother of success".

If I hadn't gotten bleeding and cracked nipples on the 1st day, I also wouldn't have gotten Mrs Wong to teach me the correct latching method and had a good 6 mths of BFing! Despite going for antenatal class, I feel we actually only learn properly when the bb is already here and she can help us latch the bb on for live demo.

I think as long as she's around in the hospital, she will be willing to coach mommies on BF. She's very friendly that way.

re: bumwear.

i saw it at expo fair. at first its was interesting. but after the salesgirl explain to us, we still have to wash. 2pces somemore. and its cost range from SGD26 onwards... rather ex hor.

Oh dear.. i hope i do not need to break out of KKH after delivery and run to TMC to ask Mrs Wong to teach me!

The 3D scan was fun! Even got video of the scan (of her moving at the same time) hehe!! But my girl a bit not cooperative eh.. one arm keeping covering a portion of her face... and then she turned face down (read facing my butt/spine) -.-'
