(2009/03) March 2009 MTBs

mummies
do u let your babies watch tv?
my baby caleb loves to watch pocoyo at disney playhouse..he can smile and laugh watching it..
but i only let him watch for 15 mins the most coz not sure whether 3mths old is allowed to watch tv

missy,

i am keen on this but bb brianne is one of the youngest few in this thread as she is born in the last week on March.

and it depends on H1N1 situation too
sad.gif

other than that.. let me know the date.

missy,

If u are holding the birthday bash in september i will be keen.

i won't be available on Sat, 20th Sep 2009 cos its my second bro in-law's Wedding.

If its after 9th Sep.. will be great cos hubby will be in town.. let me know ok? thanks

lenny
really?
but there are so many education dvd for babies..mostly from 6m+..I even have 1 for newborn but my baby not so interested.
I think 1 yr + is safe enough..can allow them to watch as long as not too long and the show is educative..all my friends' children (now 1 or 2 yr old) already watch tv (thomas and friends, dora, etc)

dear missy and alfafa and rest of mommies, sorry no offence hor ahha, but i would prefer to go to music type of classes than gym classes. As a second time mommy, I have spent LOADS on trial classes for my #1 and most of them are gym classes. Ok maybe he is a weirdo hahaa. but he absolutely HATES those trial classes to an extent he keeps CRYING in class till i thought he was autistic - well, still too early to tell if he is. haha. My hubby keeps scolding me for brining him to all these trials and wasting our money. BUT perhaps it's his character too, he hates it if you force him to do anything, hence he is VERY unwilling to participate in any of those jumping activities, hanging bar etcetc. And then i gave up when hubby asks me: WHY bother trying to turn him into a monkey! so what if he can do monkey bar or hang upside down or whatever? so no more gym classes from then on. MEN!!!

If you are keen on gym type classes, there are many to choose from. Gymboree is one of them, there is also thelittlegym, mygym, babyjumpergym to name some of the others that I've tried.

Kindermusik is good, like what hoho suggested. THAT was the one of the few trial classes that he didn't cry but he didnt' especially enjoy either so i didn't enroll him ahaaha.

I prefer the indoor type of lessons la, like playdays and bibinogs. They are really very fun hahah. Signed #1 up for a termly session at playdays and he EXTREMELY enjoyed it, which came as a HUGE surprise cause he was just so irritated and whiny at gym classes. hahaa. So hence for trishelle, i be looking at more indoor fun, learning type rather than gym HAHAHA!!

However, that said, if the birthday bash is in gymboree, me want to attend! hahaa. For the bday bash, not for gymboree. HAHAH.

Gg back to work on monday and won't be coming in the forum as much liao. hais. Very sian.

missycandy,
Me interested! Was thinking of gg for the trial class anyway so this will b a great opportunity. 5th Sept is a good date for me. Can I start the ball rolling?

6 mths bash party @ gymboree
1. Jo (5 sept onwards)

miss83,

Better not let yr little one watch TV. Research shows that TV makes babies stupid coz' their brain cannot process the images like us. They enjoy watching coz' of the bright colours or lights or the music/sounds produced which parents always mistaken as they are "enjoying" the programme.

cindy,
Yr boy very different lehz.. I heard from many of my frens of good reviews for gymboree. I guess each child is unique with their likes and dislikes. Hmm..now I wonder if my boy will like it..
Anyway, me also a teacher like u so I know he u feel about school reopening. With h1n1 coming up so fiercely, I think schools may close

jo:: haha my boy is a TV addict. he at home, the tv must be on. not that he watch whole day long but he just want to listen to the songs. When it comes to a song he likes, he will quickly drop what he's doing and run to imitate barney and kids and sing and dance like them. Very funny. hahaha. and yes ah, i really think he's a weirdo. HE really HATES the gym type class ley! but others like bibinogs, playdays, littleneurotree he is ok. I have not tried him out at GUG or igenius yet. but not gg to overload him liao la. since he gg to start school *Childcare* on monday hahaa. and yes I REALLY SO NOT LOOKING fwd to mondayyy!! i don't think schools will close in a big scale unless it's raelly huge community spread. might be just a level or a class. aiya don't know. my friend was just joking, wah now school holidays we are like telemarketeers *Call up to check if they need to take LOAbsence* then when school reopen, we are like missy *TAKE TEMP* haha! i burst out laughing!

miss83,

Its up to individual ba.. my gf who is doing her Masters in Child Psychology advice me on the same thing too.. she ask me not to let Bree watch TV wor.

cindy,
my thinking for #1 is ger mah, must be gentle, cannot climb up n down, cos i dun her to do the same stunts at home.
#2 is a boy, so can be rough! haha.. my hb say 1.

i oso went to many trials for #1, but now smart liao, choose wisely!
haha

how old is ur #1?
hv u tried zoophonics? is using the same phonics system as GUG but def. cheaper course fee.

hoho, SAME SAME haha yes now #2 we got experience liaos so must open eyes bigbig first and see if worth money or not! hahaha. MY #1 is coming 20months next wk. HAHAH no ley never try zoophonics! but sounds interesting man! maybe I should let him try but now no time man hahah.

cindy - ooo... yeh i nvr research properly yet la. hahaha. jus like the FM.. that time thought BM wld be plentiful no problem. end up nvr research on FM. upon discharge only heard abt enfalac. so only ask for enfa. and only gave me 2 small bottles. -_-" then buy in bulk. end up Baby K constipated. then vomit. have to change to Friso. tsk tsk. didnt realise soooo many brands of milk avail...

i guess yes must really research properly bah. Thats why opting for the trial class 1st. hurhurhur. kindermusik is msia one huh...

maybe some of the kind mummies here can jus list dwn a few centres where we cn bring babies for music or gym classes.. and the feedback... cn help clueless mummies like me... =P TIA! hurhurhur.

for the 6mths bash, can only take up to 25mummies & babies max. then per pax jus for the class is between $24-$26 just for the class & venue. Excluding food/snacks. If include food, might go up to $40. Are you all okie with that? then time also limited leh. only 1.5hrs ... i think for the bash, might be better to hold it at a function room... then more time to interact... dont have to rush...
happy.gif

for gymboree.. if we have 10pax keen on the trial class, then cn org one... $40 for trial class... if u intend to sign up membership then its $50 for 1yr.. and u get free trial class... and other stuff la.. lazy to type again =P

Anyway, at the rate h1n1 is going, nt many mummies might be keen on attending to bash... we see how bah... jus list dwn ur names... il start some...

had friends with babies over for dinner just. so fun. Heheh all the daddies were wining and dining while the mommies were mingling and playing with babies.

Speaking of which, ya ya both of my friends told me that their baby really enjoyed kindermusic. Their babies are 7mth and 7.5mth old respectively. I think one sent her girl to the trial kindermusic class at 7mth and another sent her boy at 6mth. But they both said that it is actually much more fun for babies to attend kindermusic only after they can crawl, as that is when they can really "dance" and play to the music.

cindy, no lah. I also never do research so blur blur one. Your suggestions are always welcome.

Only concern is that we have to pick a class that will not go wasted on a small 6mth old baby. Think experienced mommies will be in a better position to advise.

I am flexible with anything. No problem.

I am admittedly concerned about the H1N1 virus as well but would still like to put my name down anyway :)

Lenny,
thanks for the info re Baby watching TV. Wow 3 years restriction is a bit extreme and hard to adhere to. Hmmm I gave in and let her watch Baby Einsteins' Baby First Signs (v v good DVD to teach baby signs btw. Highly recommended) with me the other day in order to distract her. Heee lazy mama. But am a little worried that she might get over stimulated as well. Think I should be more careful. Maybe just occasionally then. total abstainence is difficult too cos we watch TV at night and she's usually awake at that time.

Hi Mummies,

I had only read the homepage and the next thought that I had was that is it possible for us mommies to donate a couple of dollars to the brave little Charmaine who's willinging to go through all the needles and pain her 50% hope of survival? She's only 4 years old n I'm sure that we being mummies would feel all out for the trying times the little girl and her family had to go through.

I would like to start the campaign going and would like to donate some money and wondering if you mummies would like to join in? I would like to start by donating $50. Wonder if any mummy can take charge of the collection of the money and after a week , we take the money we gathered amongst ourself to pass to little Charmaine? I would like to take charge however, I might not be able to keep track of the records actively.

Any mummies care to join me in helping Charmaine??

Do I send transfer the money to your bank account - same as the one previously given for the sleep workshop?

Thanks for collating the orders!!

Pei, I'll confirm price of the other items with the BP organiser first. Haha I asked if anyone else can collate orders but if it's a small order then guess it's ok that I do it.

The BP closes 30th June so will have to settle things quickly. Will post here once I hear from BP organiser

omg so much shopping, lucky that our Jul trip is cancelled or it's back to potatoes again hahaha

Thanks to Daphne Kang, I'm dreaming about the Zoobie. BP closes soon but DH wants to go down to showroom to check it out first and choose on the spot. He's the kind who must see and touch first before buying.

mummies,

any one can tell me how to receive email notification for certain thread only apart from unticking every other thread in the BP folder.. kinda tedious.

lenny,

Abstract of the primary article for the tv --> adhd association + subsequent associated articles further down the page:

http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/cgi/content/abstract/113/4/708

This is probably the article u read that states the 3 yr age limit:

http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/cgi/content/full/120/5/986

Briefly going through the abstracts, in a nutshell, some cite that only non-educational programs lead to attention problems and viewing of tv before 3 yrs of age, some also advocate this association in early childhood and adolescents, some also say the link is weak due to biases in data gathering in the methods used in the articles so far, and all of them do say that the methods need refining and further research is warranted.

I personally think probably best to find a good middle way, instead of going teetotal with the gogglebox, or dumping bb in front of it - maybe not more than a 15 min stretch of educational tv each time, and maybe not more than 45 mins/1hr a day max when they are old enough to understand that what is happening on the tv is more than just colourful flashing pictures and interesting sounds - ie at toddlerhood, not infancy. Think educational tv is always helpful as long as it is shown in moderation. Also not all kids with tv exposure are definitely going to develop adhd - it totally depends on the individual kid, what they watch, home environment etc etc.
