(2008/12) December 2008 MTBs

echo,
I use those thermal bags (bigger ones) with the brick when I go out.
happy.gif
For short trips (within 2 hrs usuage), I use the single bottle thermal bag with my frozen eye mask. :p I oso use the single one to store my empty glass bottle when travelling.

Merydith,
I think nowadays mothers are more well-informed on what to and what not to do. So we tend to not trust our inlaws or parents to take care of the kid using their own beliefs. e.g. when bb shld start on solids, how to bathe them, etc. And perhaps so, we tend to "clash" with them too... :p

Snowger
The frozen eye mask thing is a great idea! I have a small gel pack that can be used for sprained ankles and a gel pack for eyes. I think I can use one of them with a bottle and stick it into the diaper bag-type of bottle holders. I will go try that at home tonight. If everything fits inside, then I won't need to buy anything at all. Thanks for a great tip!!

It is tiring..n he is taking his degree at the same time. Really salute him for being able to handle work stress, study stress n assignment stress and wife stress! Wahahaha

I noe Zach is not ready for solid yet cos i start feeding him with water using spoon..he stick out his tongue. Either (1) He dont like water or (2) He dont like drinking via spoon

Wah.. rocker 3 in 1 good wack!!! IVY you can go buy ah.. hehehe..

outing i only can last min confirm nia.. when the time nearer.. ARghz....

emeraldbride
I'd read that sticking their tongue out is called 'tongue thrust reflex'. Babies are ready for solids once they lose that reflex. I guess it means that if you put something in their mouth, they won't stick their tongue out.

echo, tat's rite.. it's the tongue thrusting. He will turn 4 mth next week but i will not intro solid to him till he is nearer to 6months.. hb got allergy history so i better play safe though i m like a 'rubbish' bin can eat anything.

Ask u mummies, can we eat sashimi while breastfeeding?? I m going for buffet next weekend and I wanna eat sashimi leh.. hv not touched them for nearly a year liao!! I miss salmon n oyster alot alot alot..

Kath,

I have been eating sashimi after my confinement, so far my gal ok. Gynae oso says can, but moderately lah.

I'm drinking coffee everyday leh, dunno who says after drinking coffee/coke their bb cannot sleep, day time my gal very light sleeper, nite time ok, dunno is it becoz I drink kopi every morn, noon time pump out...??

introducing solid food
my PD asked me not to introduce solid food to Daniell earlier than 6 mths since he has sensitive skin & mild eczema... actually good also coz easier mah if baby only drinking milk...

Kath,
i've been eating sahsimi after confinement, asked few doc & all of them said ok to take so long as moderation... so far i only avoid dairy product (esp cow milk) & peanut

Jes, luckily i m not a fan of milk but I did drink Anmum Lacta mix with my Milo...i ate alot of cheese though! Been eating them since preggy times.

Since so many ppl ate sashimi liao, ok lar..i will go eat oso. Going to Melt the World Cafe to celebrate hb's b'day..keke

Hi SNowger
Meaning we always empty our breast, the milk shd have high fat contents.. if we dun empty it properly, we are leaving the fats behind which may easily lead to block ducts... Can i also interprete it this way?

No wonder my BB so fat.. :p cos she drink all the hind milk also as i always empty my breasts

Hi Kath
i also ate sashimi leh.. bo chap already la..

jo,
I dunno leh... confused!!! :'( But ya I think so... The tap theory lor. If u on the tap, initially is cold water (foremilk), as water flow will become hot (hindmilk). If u nvr pump finish, the hot water will bcome cold (foremilk)? Damn, I btr be clearing my breast clean clean nowadays.

I personally think block ducts come when the milk is produced faster than us stripping it.

bur/Jo,
I found a lot of interesting links on exclusive pumping! How come now then see them??? *sianz*
http://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/bf-links-excpumping.html

eh?? no la.. where got become cold??

Read this : <font color="0000ff">Now think about the hot water faucet again. If there is a long period of time before the faucet is used again, then you go through the "cold to hot" process once more, but if you turn the water on fairly soon after it was used then the water is either pretty warm or still hot, depending upon how long it's been since the faucet was last on. </font> Therefore still warm la.

Yes, i do Know the difference between exclusive pumping &amp; Latching..

Exclusive pumping, its not easy to keep up the supply .. example, u pump less 1 time per day, SS drop.. this is same as Latching..

However, Some nutrient are lost thru storage ( refridge or freeze).. Bonding is lost too.

I did blog about the immune booster thru latching which expressing milk cannot obtain.. Let me extract some from my blog:

Immune boosters. In each feeding mother delivers MILLIONS of LIVING white blood cells to her baby to help baby fight off all kinds of diseases. You will not find these living cells in formula! Also, when mother is exposed to a germ, she makes antibodies to that germ and gives these antibodies to her infant via her milk. Breast milk also contains factors that prevent microbes from attaching, and a long list of other antiviral, antibacterial and antiparasitic factors.

* Even more amazing, if a baby contracts an illness that mom has not been exposed to previously, he will transfer this organism through his saliva to the breast, where antibodies are manufactured on site and then sent back to baby via the milk to help him cope. ... Mothers who wean their babies from the breast during the first and even second and third years of life often notice that their child becomes sick more than before, or for the first time.

Healthy teeth. Bottle-fed babies have worse jaw alignment and are more likely to need orthodontic work as they get older. This is probably because the sucking action during breastfeeding improves the development of facial muscles and the shape of the palate.

But snowger.. whatever it is.. Breastfeeding is not easy.. I think we just do at our convenience and comfort...Whatever you think its ok, just do it.. Better than no breastmilk for your baby, right??

I still try to Latch my girl once in awhile.. its actually more for her comfort ( bonding) &amp; also this selfish mummy want her baby to clear her block ducts.. N i everytime also thinking to give up liao...

One more thing which Kath always stress on :
Mummy , ourselves, shd be well nutritious first , inorder to provide them all the nutrients they need..
happy.gif

Right on Jo.. last week when I was at Raffles Place (cos Zach was at infantcare), i had fish soup everyday and I really notice a different in my milk quality and the supply is actually there so i m really looking forward to going back to work so that I can have my fish slice soup daily!!

fabbie,i bought the rocker to toddler chair...must sell it away first...you know of anyone looking for it??i will sell it away for 60neg...used for only a near 2mths

Jo,
So does it mean if we drag 6 hrs to pump (i.e. long period of time), then we go thru the cold to hot process...
sad.gif
Crazy mummy is going to try to get bb to latch... *haha* 3months nvr latch wonder if she will chew my nipple off. :p

emeraldbride,
Haha... I oso had fish soup + fish curry for lunch today (so I had 2 servings of lunch!)... I like!!! *yummy* Going to make effort to eat fish soup everyday (cos sometimes I just take pork or chicken the entire day).

Hi Kath
yes yes. fish really help... my mum daily cook fish for me.. at least 1 meal out of 3 meals...

Actually i quite miss the fish slice noodles soup at Golden Shoe.. kekeke... but i dun look forward to go back to work...

I already start to miss her though i m still with her now...

haiz but my MIL did not take care of baby b4..her sons were given to grandma in msia to take care last time while she is in SG. Then I also think she is not the kind of know the common sense stuff... coz she told me can let Randall try the chicken piece. Thats y i say cannot..will choke..faint..anybody knows that without teeth how to give the chicken piece.

Then she told me that her mother gave her porridge when she was only 1mth old... *faint...

jes,
I also hope to start him around 6mths...to help with his sensitive skin...

jo, understandable. That time when I was abt to send Zach to infantcare, i oso miss him even he is juz beside me. Paranoid on what if he smile more at the teacher, what if he starts to flip, to talk etc and I m not the first one to know..i'll be missing alot of his firsts..sigh! No choice, need to work else no money to buy him n myself stuff..haha

Merydith, ur MIL very 'geng'! Dare to suggest chicken ah?? My sisters and bro wanna let Zach try ice cream the moment he hit 4months but definitely will be a strict NO from me..haha. Luckily my MIL dun dare to suggest anything abt Zach cos she know i will not listen! The onie thing she will say to Zach each time she sees him is that "Call Ah Ma"..wahaha and each time i feel like telling her, he will call Mama or Papa first before calling Ah Ma! Muahaha..i m very bad!

hi mummies..haha..i am on leave these few days again..keke..my colleagues are saying that i come back to work like nvr come back..no choice lah..have to clear my last yr leave by end of this month..

merydith, same lah..my MIL also say want to cook brown rice for my bb when he reach 4mths..faint..

joyce, sure!!! U may noe one of my ex-colleague..she juz joined the same comp as u in Jan.
happy.gif

Jo, then we have lunch together lar next week. We confirm date first then onie time cos need to see what time is Zach's feed.

First day strated work, bb wake up for milk at 6.30am, sent him to nanny house at 7.30am then went to work. But work till 2pm+, nanny called up informed bb fussy and crying since morning, she has carried him all the time and can't put down, bb having the symptoms of mild flu and red mark on throat.
Decided to bring him see PD, both of us leave office early, I went to nanny house pick up bb and hb went to clinic Q for no. PD confimed bb having mild flu with phlegm and given zyrtec to release uncomfort due to flu.

Introducing solid food - PD says not to introduce solid food to bb earlier than 6 mths due to allergy concern. If bb reject milk then can try to introduce solid food in 5 mths above.

jowin: so the calamine lotion didn't work for you ah? But your rashes all gone liao?

Hmm...the immune booster is very interesting. Never knew that latching on is so "power"...

Last evening, David came home and started crying non-stop. I tried feeding him EBM but he refused. He usually very chin chai one. Latch also can, bottle also can. Yesterday he cried until whole face full of tears, I quickly latch him on. The 120ml of EBM pour away... sigh. He's still taking 120ml only every 3.5 hours. Think that's not enough right? I was thinking of introducing him to a few teaspoon of juice or papaya this weekend when he reach his 4th month. Now I'm wondering if that's a good idea.

morning ladies..
just thot of sharing something very interesting..

A mother's milk volume remains relatively constant from one month postpartum to six months postpartum, when solid foods are introduced. Babies who are in daycare often receive increasing amounts of breastmilk in their bottles based on the theory that as they grow bigger, they need more milk at each feeding. While this is true for the formula-fed baby, this theory does not apply to the breastfed baby. Milk production by the mother remains constant during this time, but the fat content of her milk continues to increase as the baby gets older. Thus, a breastfed baby receives milk that has more calories per ounce as he gets older. Mom does not need to produce more!! source

phew!
happy.gif

thot have to constantly increase bb's BM intake.. thankfully, no need to catch up.. else very xiong, neh..

My PISA bag is torn! I guess I must have been stuffing too many things inside. Usually, other than bottles and funnels, I also put in my personal stuff (wallet, keys, tissue, ipod) and sometimes put in a folder of work in the back pocket or even a tupperware for a sandwich (cos bfg makes me hungry). So now my bag is torn!!
sad.gif
Does anyone know how to remove the pump from the bag? Has anyone tried putting their PISA in another bag before?

echo, which PISA bag u got? can it be sewn back? i don't think the motor can be removed unless u got the metro bag.. maybe can check w/ medela service center?

Dee
It's the backpack. The exterior of the bag is torn along a seam, just above the outer pocket. I don't know if it can be sewn back... I bought it from the Paragon store; I will try to call them to see if they have any suggestions. If cannot then I will go to the service centre. Thanks for the idea.

dee,
thanks for the post! My colleague once told me before tat milk will change in accordance to bb's needs.
happy.gif
So it's true! *yeah!*

echo,
the pump can be removed from the backpack. It is secured to the bag via quite a few velcro tapes. Warning: It's v v v sticky. My hb manage to take it out before...
happy.gif
I stuck the pump back just before i went back to work.

btw, u can buy the medela bag oso - they hv the sling version being sold (the model name is city something...).

Solids:
A/c to the book i read, weaning can be done early (NOT before 17weeks) with consultation from PD and the types of food introduced. During early introduction, shld give bb things which hv high iron content.
happy.gif

snowger,
really can remove? thot cannot.. i got "bluffed"..

wat bb food is high in iron? i know one is oatmeal..

it's pouring!!
supposed to go out meet DH for lunch.. now stuck at home..
sad.gif

ask u all..does ur baby seems to draw in very very deep breath and then let go? Zach does that all the time one leh. I find that he always take very deep breath and then his eyes will be like open so wide! Abit worried so going to bring him see a PD.. i scared he is like me got heart palpitations

dee/snowger
haha ya.. can remove.. its not sticky leh. i just take out the whole thing then its like a black box. and the black box i always bring to work nia. Topid to bring the haverset. normally i just bring a cloth bag put inside with my coolbag. I realise cooler bag is much lighter. I bought the pigeon fridge to go bag its so HEAVY! faints. haaha

ANYONE WORKING AT tanjong PAGER?! HEE

btw this spree is cute!
http://www.singaporemotherhood.com/forumboard/messages/581296/2268600.html?1237852211

fabbie,
I told u can remove one mah. Rem? I prefer to use the bag than lug the pump and the bag seperately. *haha* Plus i scared I spoil the pump leh... :p

The pigeon fridge to go is quite big. Cos it can hold more bottles lor. N there are 2 slabs of thin ice brick.

dee,
the book mentions brocolli, lentils. Other food tat can be introduced include meat. I haven't finish reading the whole chapter. Will share aft i have finished it. :p But hv to avoid peanuts if bb if prone to allergy. Read some places say if BF, mother shld also avoid taking peanuts.

Talking abt allergy, my hb told me to eat a wide variety of food to see whether my ger got allergy to the food or not... Dunno wat he talking abt leh.

Hi Gals

Bryan is down with UTI. Initally we thot his fever was due to the jabs on Friday but as the fever persisted over the weekend, we decided to take him to our PD for assessment and the urine test shows high level of white blood cell (normal range 6, his 27). So quite certain it is UTI. *sigh* now waiting for his urine culture results.

We have been so careful with Bryan for all his hygiene and yet still can kenna UTI. We kind of thinkg it may be related to infantcare since they won't be as careful as we are since they're so short-handed and busy with 1:5 ratio.

Any advise?? I'm so worried now and hopefully his kidneys are not affected.

wow..scary hor! Imagine we adults got UTI during urine oso wanna cry out liao, babies will be worse.

In infantcare, they dun change diaper that often like us.. they change like every 3hrs but if it is not really tat wet, they will not change a new one. They call it nappy check.

I must tell them tmr to change every 3hrs irregardless.. no need to save on diapers.

Adel,

Tat's bad, tat time my niece oso kena UTI, have to stay in hospital for few days, chalk up high bills men. Really got to ask the teachers to change and clean properly. My niece so poor thing, cry and cry.

Hi jowin, i work in RP... but normally am off on mon &amp; tues to clear my ML, however, next mon i am working cause closing...we can meet for lunch!

Echo, my PISA haversack oso torn, first was the bottom of the sling, i went to those cobbler to get it sew back, now is the middle of the sling on both side, which have no way to mend liao...let me know if you check with the service ctr...Thanks!

Snowger, where to buy the metro bag?

fabbie, u bring everything in your handbag? not heavy meh? i gotta pick my girl frm the infantcare so haversack easier...

UTI
We also trying to find out how he can get it when we are so careful in cleaning him. When he gets back to infantcare, I'm going to give them a black &amp; white instruction to change diaper every 2 hours regardless if it is wet or dry &amp; if he poos, they'll have to wash him with water and not just wipes like how we do it at home.

Luckily for Bryan, so far he is ok and today he is in good mood so no need to stay in hospital. But when we saw the leaftlet that our PD gave concerning UTI, we got worried 'cos it states that every UTI in babies are related to their kidney functions. So we are praying really hard that it is juts normal bacteria not not his kidney issues.

Hi Luthadel
Oh dear.. UTI is quite painful when they pee.. Poor Bryan..

Hi spagetti
Yes, calamine lotion dun works on me n may trigger my ecezma cos its very very drying. I applied the Gaia smoothing lotion n the rashes subsided. Now on n off still 1 or 2 pop out.. As long as i dun go n scratch it.. shd be ok. THANKS...

Hi snowger.
I think to make the breast milk content changes according to our baby's needs, i think that this apply more to latching. This is because while latching, the baby's saliver will send the enzymes into us and the mother will produce the necessary antibodies, nutrients for the baby.

So to make this works, sometimes it still good to latch our baby...

I dun latch Ashlynne daily..but a few times in a week
happy.gif
I hope at least some latching would be good for her.

This morning, i latched her, i almost cried.. cos tomorrow going back to work.. i got the sudden feel tat i can't accompany her &amp; give her the comfort already like the past 16 weeks. When i go off to work, she still sleeping.. when i return home from work.. she might in her lala land already...

kath,
lol...yah we all hope they call mama papa first hor..

bubblepearl,
dunno why they want to start them on solid so fast hor..

Btw, I heard that avocado is a good start to solid food coz of the fatty acid. Wonder which food have more iron n also can be started after 6 mths?
