icy, i am wrking in SME now, welfare nt v gd, but small co, less politics.

i work in many cos before, mnc , GLCs,stat boards all v political...sian!

Aqua, after allowance still couldn’t match 3k? but their bonuses a lot leh. Yea agree, we tend to feel angry and imbalance when our junior peers earn more than us!!

Kam,
SME- small medium enterprise. Mostly the boss very stingy

Aqua,
Yes, what I like abt SME is the company small and less politics, colleagues get along very well.. but benefits is really bad.

tongtong
Yah.. my opportunity cost no so high. Sometimes I do wonder what is my market valve outside.. But once i work, the pay must be significant to cover the cost of the child care/maid, meals outside..

tongtong, allowances depends, sometimes $40 for aftern shift work, $80 for nite shift.if i happen to wrk aftern shift, then barely hit 3k.

but i joined in 2003, that time asian crisis, so the pay was freezed

Re: Work
I think MNCs pay much better. I'm only a diploma holder and also started with $1.5k in my 1st job. But experience is very important in my industry so they value that more than paper qualifications. After 4-5 years was drawing $3k plus as executive level in a MNC, boss was great and willing to reward our hardwork with big bonuses (ie 3 months) so I stayed with him for 5 years before he resigned. Then one of my ex-boss asked me to join their company as AM and pay jumped to $5k. I was drawing $5k plus when they retrenched me this year. Actually good that they close down the dept otherwise I'll need alot of determination to give up such a fat paycheck to become SAHM! Hahaha...

If I ever return to workforce again, don't think will have such good pay liao...

yvonne
losing a substantial amount of income, how you guys survive? not to look down on you, my question would more be: what are your survival tips, pls share with us?
just in case i get retrenched....sianz....

Jess,
But our job cannot leave on the dot everyday lor. Busy periods means working late every day and we cannot take our own sweet time to do the work...can be very stressful at times cos deadlines are tight and cannot afford to make mistakes. Pay might be good but have to make other sacrifices lor.

i think industry plays a big part. you may be in a sucky industry doing exec level work vs a good paying industry eg finance/bank doing exec level work, the pay difference is so much.

Pixie,
Hmmm...save as much as you can! Actually I saved quite alot of money in my previous job...I don't spend on branded stuff, etc and we don't own a car so it's only food and other neccesities. Just spend within your means lor

harnor yvonne
my 1st proper job was in shipping industry, then got stuck in shipping for almost 5 yrs. the pay sux. i got in w/o experience for 1.6k, then after rising to exec level, only 1.8k, can you imagine that! that time 1.6-1.8 period, still managed to furnish new flat, get married etc...
then switch job, jump to 2k nia....slowly raise like $50 every yr...sobz...can die...then that time is delivery + preparing for birth of bb

looking back i wonder how me and my hb managed to pull through coz both our pay is always ard the same at any given time

shipping industry sux. even my mgr at the previous company, she get 2kplus only. manager leh!!

pixie, looks a the financial n insurance industry pays well.... start job hunting now!

for me, financial industry is not suitable for me! cannt use internet, and our telephone calls also recorded, super no privacy! buan tahan

Actually when I got married that time also earning 2k plus nia...so hard up for $$ cos gotta pay for renovation, house, furniture, etc...siong!

I find ang moh boss more willing to pay based on my 12 years working experience. They will reward if you perform...of course there are exceptions lah. But my ex-boss used to give us 20% increments and 2-3 months bonus cos he can see we really worked our butts off for him. This is the kind of motivation we need...

One of my ex-company was japanese. They give miserable $25-$75 increments...feel like telling them to keep for their own kopi money...so stingy and yet expect us to work OT everyday...siao!

yvonne, ur boss reali generous, 20% increment is alot! i tot onli big accounting or legal firms give such high increment. normal cos usu onli 5 to 10%?

yvonne
my dad says the same too - jap companies expect loyalty but pays peanuts and must mind your p's and q's

yes angmoh more willing to pay. last time i PART TIME as secretary for an ang moh in a newspaper firm, he was very nice and easy going. compared you do data entry during the sch hols, that was my best job during school *LOL*

aqua
i not good in numbers leh...heehee

any idea what is the stat boards salary range? I think they value more on paper qualification. My brother in law work for GIC...worked for 2yrs+ drawing $5K plus le. *envy*

aqua,
Don't say too fast...every industry has it's perks but got downside too. After being in this industry for so long, already know which companies are lousy (mgt that is although co. may be big)...so very limited places to go if wanna change jobs. Also know all the politics and where all the crap people are, so unlikely to join certain cos. too...u know wat I mean?

yvonne, i understd. i used to work in big cos that pay well, but cant stand the long hrs and stress... so i quit without job. was jobless for 4 mths before i found a job then...

yvonne,
20% increment is alot. My co only give 8% max or nil, nothing at all...like this year no increment since economy bad
sad.gif

aqua,
Maybe cos MNCs operate differently. In my ex-company, every dept is allocated a budget for increment and bonus, so it's up to the boss how it's allocated. My boss will allocate more to those who really worked and less for those who didn't contribute...so difference can be alot lor.

steph, if ur broinlaw getting second upper honours and above, $5k is normal la.
but if he is onli degree holders with pass, i tink his pay shld be around $4k.

for eg, second lower honours grad and merit holders pay already diff by at least $500

aqua,
my bro in law is 1st class honours but he change line so gotta start from scratch loh but he is very close to hitting 6K & his boss say wanna promote him next year wor.

steph, aqua
i think the norm is only 5% which is considered a lot for a lot of companies liao but my previous 2 companies always give us 5% increment nia. never more.

steph
my bil pay is oso ard 6k plus, work IT in bank, but super bz kind, must work at home or at odd hours or weekends. IT in bank pay a lot coz my close fren oso work as IT in banks she getting ard 4k+

oh back to my point: my bil is no degree kind he took courses and upgrade himself. so its subjective. some ppl with no deg or what still managed to get high pay, i admire leh

aqua,
i joke with hb & say why he don't have 70% of what his bro have "paper qualifications", then i can consider sahm. Same factory but diff product...hehe

pixie,
5% increment is confirm or depends on the co's annual profit? mine hor, say on paper is 8%max but hardly pple will get 8%, only higher management level will get de. Middle management only get 5% max if heng. Not heng, average performance only, get 3%. If lousy performance, NIL. stress le...got quarterly appraisal to complete online le (got timeframe) & must submit to boss one, HR will track. Also got individual development plan (upgrade skill/training etc). I also wonder how i survive these 8yrs!

steph
sianz rite. my current company oso have. quarter review, yearly review and must put objectives. oso dunno put what in...ZZzzz

steph, u so bad! cannot compare pple lah
happy.gif

my hubby grad, his elder bro master, but his younger 2 siblings onli O levels, even bigger difference hor

aqua,
i always mindful not to hurt my hb's ego. just teasing him & he knows...if really wanna compare, i wouldn't have marry him but someone with higher qualification liow
