MsPiggy,
What does PCF stands for?
Sunflower,
Not palace lah. My humble house is located in CCK.

Mummies,
I just came back from Pat’s Schoolhouse at Arena lei. Very disappointing. I introduced myself to the CM in English and she asked ‘can you talk in Chinese’? I said ‘yes’, and she said in Chinese that it is easier for her to communicate with me in Chinese. First impression: 0 marks.
I was then brought a most disorganized tour around the school. The room that the tots are in is really beautiful and spacious (the best classroom that I have ever seen) with nice furniture, kitchen set and an extremely small library. However, the ventilation is very stuffy. Both the aircon and wall fans were on. And I told her that I found the ventilation not good. It is warm. The room has a nice ceiling to floor glass window that overseas the pool. Nice view but the unfortunate thing is that the sun is shinning directly into the classroom and the poor tots will be eating, playing, learning and sleeping in that class. NO CURTAINS HOR. Then she brought me to her office. I requested for curriculum information. She took out a pink color clear folder and pulled out some sheets of information. She said ‘these are some of the information that the school will pass it to the parent to inform them what was taught in class each week’ Not answering my question right? So I asked her, what would they be doing in class? Her response ‘they will be exposed to some crafts and activities and will attend English and Chinese lessons’. ‘Faint’ She then asked ‘do you need to know about the fees’. I shot back ‘I know that your school is one of the premier schools in Singapore. Money is not a problem for me. But why should I fork out 1K a month without having a good impression of the school and its curriculum?’ Then I asked for brochures or handouts to read. She didn’t have any. Then I said ‘thanks and bye’.

Very disappointing loh or it could be my expectation is too high. My team of colleagues were with me cos we were there to eat abalone noodle. And one of them asked, are you really going to place Kell there? Better think twice. FAINT!

But then … I would say that their toys, equipments and furniture are of good quality one lah. Little Tikes toys everywhere. Every tot will have a mini bed to sleep on and a nicely furnished toilet. When I was about to leave the center, I saw a young girl – about 3 years old – she was playing in the gym area all by herself; unattended. And she fell down from the swing. Good gracious.

Lyn,
If you all are interested in reading up on multiple intelligences, can get a copy of 'How to Multiply Your Child Intelligences' by Adam Khoo and May Lwin. Good book written in local context. I published it in my ex-company. Haha.

Paula, the CM seems very rude! She gave me that impression that she will only entertain those rich & famous pple! damn terrible!!!!

MsPiggy,
No lah. I just find that you must be able to market your center effectively. She can't even communicate in English and how are you going to market the program?

paula,

can it be that you had not spoken to the right person? maybe should speak to the teachers
happy.gif
I been there twice too to evaluate for S last year but I dunno why somehow I was never attracted to the place like I was to LW the moment I visit. I think for me, I like LW follow by CH (chiltern house) better.

toto,

I saw Jake's photo in the palm tree class room the other day and guess what, I saw my ex colleagues' photo with their daughter also! Shirley&Roy... u prob know them by now. So excited for J to start cos so many familiar faces around
happy.gif
But I am getting v worried that J will have separation anxiety. We saw a speech therapist last saturday who told us that J has a speech delay of about 5-6 months currently... and recommended speech therapy session. I hope the PG will help her

MsPiggy,
I visited Sunflower Kids yesterday evening. I was late for 30 minutes but the manager and the teacher waited for me. Teacher Siti brought me around the school and we spent about an hour chatting in the tots’ classroom (emptied). She was going through each and every of the materials; like the Montessori bricks, marbles in bowl and etc and explain to me the rationale and what they hope to achieve out from doing these things. Like, the tots will be given a spoon, a piler (elastic kind) and a bowl containing marbles. So they will monitor the child’s hand strength when they scoop the marble out of the bowl and etc. Very patient and very passionate. Big difference lei and the teachers there all spoke so well. Because all the teachers in this center graduated with a Early Childhood diploma from one of the schools (must verified with my NIE lecturers) which trained most of the teachers teaching in international schools.

paula,

we went to a private speech therapist without referal from pd or whoever. I had been observing J for many months and felt that I want some confirmation whether there is any major problem. Their findings just confirmed my observation.

We spent an hour at the therapist's. She first requested for us (parents) to play with her while she observed. Then she joined in and played with her and observed her responses. She then uses a special spoon (like those measuring spoon for baking but its not really a spoon...) to feed J peanut butter. And observe how she eat those. Also observed how she eat her favourite yoghurt and bread (which we brought).

She said at her age, should be saying 2 words short sentences. J's vocab is very limited currently to 15 words and majority of those 15 words, she only started saying this last 1-2 months. Some of her pronouciation are not clear and it may be due to weak oral muscles. Asked us to give her chunky vege raw, eg. raw carrot, peanut butter etc.

Though she recommended weekly session for around 6 months, but I dun think I will do that... prob I will go another 1-2 sessions to learn more about the exercises I can do with J at home. And then work on it ourselves with the help of her PG. The therapist session is vvvv exp. That 1 hour of assessment cost us $160. Each subsequent session is $130. Imagine $130 a week..... really exp. I am going to monitor her progress lor.. if need be, we will bring her to kkh speech therapy through polyclinic referal. Cheaper... time we enjoy taxpayer's subsidised benefit

poohy, i know shirley, her gal is tyonna, but not sure whether she staying on in the class. roy complained of safety issues in the class, and that LW is like CC, not very academic. they are also interested in SM. not sure what's the latest status, but tyonna is quite a good gal.
happy.gif

poohy, is J really slow in terms of speech? if so, i have to be worried too. from reading your blog, your J is like my J. their speech development seemed similar. i tot J was slow, but i was not worried. in his time, he will start talking....
happy.gif

mspiggy,

we went to dynamics OTC at forums shopping centre. Those who goes to JG at forums should prob see their posters.

poohy, peanut butter should be avoided for kids below 2 years old... due to possible allergy.

J also hates chunky food, but at school, he is introduced bite sized food, and i think he is beginning to adjust to that.

J is teething again, two more molars coming out, so there is some discomfort. He is eating less, also due to school, and drinking less in the day. Since he started PG, he has been waking up twice at nite for milk...
sad.gif

toto,

safety issues? first time I heard that hehee
happy.gif
Their girl had been attending SM classes since mid last year. I used to see them on saturday cos the timing is same as S's timing. Hope they will still be around then.. .else I go and persuade my SIL to put her twins there too haha
happy.gif

actually, LW is not very academic. They are really into learning thru play. But S seemed to settle so well there... his social skills had improved so much! So for academic, I guess, I will just depend on enrichment for now. S will be continuing edudrama and I am going to put him in Berriesworld for chinese enrichment soonest.

huh? I thought jake's speech is much much better than my J's? my J only has about 15 words vocab so far leh.... and dunno how to call papa and mama (so of course dunno daddy and mummy). the only 2 syllabus word she can say now is "apple".... Just for a gauge, out of the same factory, S called "daddy" and "mummy" at almost 1 year old and speaks sentences by now. but i think she is trying hard and improving.... I am also trying hard to speak and sing and read to her much more often.

Poohy,
Thanks for sharing! Great! At least you know where the problem is and can work on improving it with the help of LW. I underwent speech therapy problem when I was in primary six too. 

toto,

ohhh so cannot give peanut butter huh... ok ok!!

I think the night waking should a passing phase, dun worry
happy.gif

hi poohy
can u share with me more onthe speech therapy if u dun mind? or can u pm me? how did the therapist assess her? where is this speech therapist from? how do u tell that J is weak in this area?

i m thinking of sending ethan to go for it cos he knows how to speak a few words though his vocabulary is ok..

tks!

Paula : oh dear, so sad to read abt the review on Pats schoolhouse - that is one of my choices for K next year - i especially like the one in the East and it's convenient to drop her off there before going to work !!!

Poohy : i second toto, try not to give peanut butter to J now ! chunky food - perhaps you can do celery ? and raw salad vege ? My PD told me to start K on it !!! she loves to pick at my mum's salad bowl !!!

peng,

the details are as above already
happy.gif
Basically therapist just observe her play with us, play alone, play with her. and how she eat, bite, chew. This therapist is an australian and trained there. The clinic is DynamicsOTC, Therapy centre for kids.

She was telling us she need to work with J on weekly session and assess later if occupational therapy will be needed.... at this point no.

poohy, hmm... J sometimes will say ma ma... but dunno whether he is calling me. for daddy, he will call ah ba... ha ha... which is correct in Hebrew sense.
happy.gif
He can also say apple, aeroplane, flower, bubble....

J's nite waking is due to lack of food in the day - LW does not feed milk, and the lunch and snack portions are so small... J eats full 2 bowls of porride at home, at school.... his portion is not even 1/10, that's why he is hungry at nite. He had 3 feeds from 8.30 pm to 11.30 pm, to 5.30 am. All 200 ml he finished...

K_Ong,
Different branch might be different in quality. Maybe I am really not lucky enough and it seems like really good pre-schools in the west is limited. Go and check out the East branch and update us. Maybe i should move afterall. :) One of my editors know Patricia personally and she said she will highlight this to her. Keke.

Poohy,
do you think J needs weekly therapy? at least she's speaking like 15 words now right? guess you monitor her first.

paula, the problem is - J does not want extra servings. he only asks for extra for UHT milk. the rest of the food, i am happy if he can finish it. in sum, he is not the greedy type, need to force feed or distract him to feed him. his meal times at home are 1 hour plus per meal...

toto, maybe give J a last milk feed before bed? recently Wes will want his milk before bed... think they are having a growth spurt again.
