(2005/08) Aug/Sept 05' MTBs

dun be angry... cos we are all first time mother... how do u expect ourselves to know everything even the baby is born? if we are so capable, we wont need a CL and wouldnt pay for a CL to help us out. If my CL gng to say this to me, see what she is gng to get... i will tell her off, if i am so expert, do u think u will be here to earn my money?!?! if my MIL shoot me, i will tell her, u eat more salt more than me eating rice, how to compare wor. We have to go through trials and errors before we an handle them well...

sorry lor, i wont let my CL climb over my head.

re: baby doesn't sleep
when it happened to my boy, we'd swaddle/ burp/ apply ru yi oil on him. If all else fails, in order for baby to get his much needed sleep, I'll carry him & not put him down. Max i carried him 45min while watching TV.
Note: when babies are bored, they don't scream. They make whiny sounds. They only scream when they're in pain - eg stomachache, injection etc.

re: food
hmm.. lactating mom needs proper nutrition. Pork & fish will give u enuf protein, dun worri abt abstaining fr chicken. Would u like to try some milk powder for lactating moms, eg Anmum, Enfamama. 2 cups daily meets nutritional needs.
Hey, i also abstained from all the poisonous food to make the elders happy.. initially no chicken, no eggs, cannot eat a certain type of fish (xue yu).. everyday eating pork pork pork. Until now i'm not supposed to eat seafood for 3-6 months i think. I was craving chilli crab since pregnancy.

Dun stress - it will affect milk production. Drink plenty of water, rest as much as u can, think of what u'd like to eat & go for it! (provided it's nor forbidden...)

temple
i thought freshly expressed breastmilk will be body temp coz it comes direct from mummy ley...

i'm a mummy
yeah u're right.. practice makes perfect. Smile & tell them, "I admit I need to learn how to take care of my baby, and of course u do a better job than me. But unfortunately I can't depend on others all the time & I gotto start somewhere... please be patient with me & i hope u won't be affected by baby's cries too much while i learn how to handle her. Thank you."
After that, whenever baby cries, make it known that u want to be baby's primary care-giver. Will they think u're rude if u firmly take over your crying babe? Not snatching, but just carry your baby & move away from them. But then hor, u must be prepared that it's tough to go at it on your own lor... that means everytime baby cries u gotto attend, whether u feel sleepy, tired, impatient etc.

Erowen,
Thanks. Turned out my rashes are actually "fong mo", probably triggered by the confinement food, the weather and the lack-of-frequent-bathe. Luckily, they are subsiding after 2 jabs, but in future got to be careful w my food intake cos it may recur.

Trinit,
your milk supply good huh? I pump only about 500ml per day. Max record in 1 pump is 200 ml....usually it's around 90-100 ml, but still not enough for my boi who is consuming 120ml per session. Need to increase my ss!!

Hi I'm a mummy!,

thanks for advice. been drinking red date tea and hubby bought milk powder for me - anlene (in chocolate flavour, thank god!) there was one time i was able to express 210ml in a day and after that, it never happened again... don't know why really. to be honest, i don't express often and regularly. only at most twice a day. i didn't express the whole of yesterday and it got so engorged and painful that i woke up at 4am to express milk. i was trying to tahan till hubby leaves for work at 6 plus but i couldn't even bear the slightest movement. it was the fastest i expressed milk. less than seven mins and i got 60ml.

There's something very strange though. my left breast seems to be milk reproducing challenged. it appears to be purely ornamental... not much milk from it. i can express for half an hour and only have 10-20ml. think i'm gonna have big small breasts...

regarding your prob I'm a mummy!, don't feel like that. it's only a month so i suppose there won't be such a great effect?

hi temple,

thanks for the welcome note. being a mother is really not easy. just asked my husband today if he minds if we only have one child... can't imagine when my boy grows bigger and this has to start all over again.

hi wendyg,

it's really difficult to burp baby. he takes really long and still doesn't burp. so i lie him down to sleep coz he seems irritated and then later on, throw up his milk... am able to tell why he screams now. usually it's just to get our attention to carry him. if we delay, he really screams. i sim tia so usually will pick him up. cannot bear to hear him scream like that. is that bad?

seabreeze: every one is talking about taking care of the baby le.. how about u?hehe.. i bet it must abe like a breeze to u again huh?

anissa: thanks for the info on the labour pain. ooo.. am so scared now. *fingers crossed* i hope i wun have a long labour..

anissa,
Yup. Thanks for the info on labour pain. Sounds quite scary leh.. Tear until the anus there. Wow. I cannot imagine leh. Think I've been underestimating the pain.

kathy: i dun understand one thing.. usually facial got a steamer to steam the face so as to open up the pores for easier extraction. so wat does the beautician use at ur place? she bring the machine there? hehe.. sorry.. juz need to check..

hi i'm a mummy (still getting used to ur new nick.hehe), wendy's right abt the effort to be primary caregiver to ur child... though u would naturally want to be as hands on as possible, u would also welcome help from time to time... do not offend them by being too blunt, else it'll be hard to find help when u need it. try to enlist them as ur "teachers" instead?

hi ladies
i am a jan 06 MTB and still can't decide which hospital to go to MAH/TMC....

so, wanna do a research here. how's your experience with the hospital (MAH/TMC) during your stay?
1) how helpful is the nurse?
2) do they try to accomodate your request e.g. bring the bb more often to you etc?
3) overall services?

thanks in advance.

Hi Abalone,
you were at Mt E too? I discharged on 5 sep. only managed to attend a bb bathing class on the day of my discharge. I was staying at Ward B. Hope things are fine with you.....

Trinit, wow, you very power leh....How you managed to pump 750ml? I was telling my HB, and he was like saying...." my dear you have a lot of work to do man! your ss is pretty miserable." aiyo, now everytime i pump, i squeeze until dry dry also produce an ave of 120ml, max 200ml in the midnite.

I have asked my CL to extend another 1 week to teach me to handle the bb.....I take it as paying tuition fee cos now my in laws also dun allow me to strain too much.

Hi Wendy
Can check...does bb get cranky after ist month injection? fever? how do you appease him?

wendy, ya... EBM is at body temperature so can give direct to baby... right?

alabone, there's another method of burping baby. make the baby sit on your lap, with his back straight, put one hand holding the cheek and the other hand supporting the back of the neck and turn him (see pic)... babies tend to burp faster... that's what i learn from my friend whom she said nurses are doing that.

Hi people, need some figures here. I will be going for C-Section at TMC. Would like to know what are the final charges after medisave deductions. Thanks!

alabone
no lah, it's not bad to pick baby up when he's crying. Dun let him scream at all if u can help it, coz more wind may get in. And baby may feel unloved coz his needs not met.

temple
not if the bottle has been sitting around for hours.. temp would've gone down by then.

aidanee
no ley, my baby din hv any fever. As for the injection, he howled once & then went back to sleep. heh heh.

hi ice,
for my case the cash part is less then $500 (include both mother and child bill).

meals:
For those mummies taking care of bb alone after CL left, may I know how you settle your meals? Do you bring bb out to buy lunch? leave bb and buy quickly? or cook? or anyone got contact to order tingkat (spell right?) for single person?

HI Triniti,

Wow! you get 750ml of EBM per pumping session?? that's amazing! or is it 750ml per day? wah, if 750ml per session, that means you get 4litres a day? *jaw drop*

Hi Alabone,

If its one thing i've learnt in this first month of being a mummy, that's to express your BM regularly. I used to have to express every 4 hours, if not engorgement. Twice, i slept through the night (hence about six, seven hours passed twice without expression) i had breast infection both times with fever up to 39.6degrees. Gynae says it was early stages of mastitis. Trust me, the feeling is horrible!! i think, although difficult, its easier to wake up in the middle of the night to pump once, rather than suffer engorgement, fever, mastitis. When you have breast infection, BM supply will go down. Each time after i have a breast infection, BM supply will go down by about half. Then must struggle and start all the way again to build up supply. The key is, the more you express, the more you will produce. Just remember to pump till 'dry'. I read somewhere that 'dry' means that when you see no more milk coming out, still continue to pump 2-3mins more. Me in the last week of my confinement month. On my good days, i can express about 1-1.2 litre of BM haha feel like a cow! On lazy, stressful days, will be about 750-800ml a day. Oh btw, did you know that cows can get mastitis too? so must remember to massage and remove blocked ducts before/while pumping.

Hi Tingting,
Can still call me mummytobe hehe i just changed the nick cause i'm now a mummy! kekeke but my username is still mummytobe

Hi Aidanee,
So lucky! if i could, i would ask my CL to stay one more week too..but she got another booking, so can't..sigh

Hi Sunny,
I stayed at TMC level 5 for 4 nights. here's my experience with TMC during my stay.

1) how helpful is the nurse?
- the midwives, nurses and sisters are very helpful. Wonderful in fact! They check on you all the time, and everytime you press the buzzer, they are there almost immediately. Also, when i was having sore nipples, engorgement problems, i mentioned to one of the nurses there. She helped me checked my breasts, then called the lactation consultant to come down and pay me a visit. Which ever nurse was on duty that day, also came by each day to ask me about my engorgement and offer advice, help etc. i also had visits by two different lactation consultant. Of which if you were to see separetly after you discharge from hospital, i think you need to pay $42 per consultation.

2) do they try to accomodate your request e.g. bring the bb more often to you etc?

Yes, you just have to request. For extra items you need, like extra disposable panty, extra pad etc. of course they will charge you for it lah..but i must say, their bill is very detailed and concise.

If you are breast feeding your baby, they will push baby to you whenever she or he is hungry, even if its in the middle of the night. If you don't want to be disturbed at night, then opt for partial BF, where you BF only in the day, and they feed your baby FM at night.

I only had colustrum the first two days, and i had sore nipples cause baby wasn't latching properly. I pumped out whatever colustrum i had and asked the nursery nurses to feed my baby. When engorgement and transitional milk set in, i loaned the Medela Lactina pump (hospital grade) from them to pump, and whatever milk i pumped,my hubby just passed to the midwives and they fed my baby.

there are 2 visiting hour periods for baby. If i remb correctly its 10-1, and 2 to 5? not sure, can't remb. anyway, during visiting time, they will push baby to your room.

3) overall services?

I must say the hospital food choice selection at TMC is quite good! There is a wide variety of meals to choose from. Also, their hot piping soup very good for BM production, i think. I only drank the papaya fish soup twice at TMC, then so far until now no problem with milk supply, yet heh

If you need any more info, just ask us. There are quite a few of us who gave birth here at TMC

cakey
pls dun leave baby alone at home while u go to lunch.
For tingkat, i'm sure they hv portions for 1 person. Check out the daily Straits Times Classifieds Pg C2 Class 5.

Hi all,

Can i check with you all how long does the bleeding last after you have delivered?
1 week? 2 weeks or ....
Do u have big pieces of blood discharge or just normal menses bleeding?

Hi Aidanee,

I was discharged the same day you were! stayed there for a day longer coz bb was slightly jaundiced. Pardon my absentmindedness (it's a run-over from the pregnancy days - CRC - which stands for 'Can't remember crap'. Got this from the book i was reading called 'Diary of a mad-mother-to be. it's hilarious! every preggers should read) i can't really remember which ward. but my room no was 4427... i think... single room. i went for the breastfeeding class second day i think.

Hi temple,

thanks for advice. will try it out. these days i get so tired of trying to burp baby that i feed him, and let my mum burp him. i feel like a horrible mum... sitting down for long periods hurts my back coz of the irritating slip disc problem...

hi wendyg,

i do pick up baby coz cannot let him cry. he turns so beetroot red that i'm afraid if i don't pick him up soon, he'll burst or something!

hi I'm a mummy!,

the thing is, if i don't express for more than twelve hours, i feel fine too. the other night was because i haven't expressed for perhaps twenty hours? then it got engorged. i do try to express but it's really not much. and i have to sit for very long on the chair holding the pump and my back hurts so i gave up. is that selfish? not to give my bb the best gift a mother can give her child - breastmilk?

hi nicole,

i've delivered since 1st sep and it's been two weeks since and i'm still bleeding. nurse at my gynae's pl told me that it can last from 3wks to a month depending on individual. sometimes it stops and then comes back again. i don't have big pieces of blood discharge. it's just like menses except it's heavier than usual.

just wanna ask this to anyone. does one go out during confinement period? am going crazy at home and wanna go out with my husband. he's been asking too. two friends of mine said they didn't bother and went out but wore long sleeves and pants. they went just once a week. is it ok to go out?

Hi all mummies
haha!750ml is from 1100am -1130pm pumped 3 times ( 250ml per session) and I latch on my baby for full feed twice a day. I actually stop pumping once I see the 2 bottles full.

If i can pump 750ml per session I prolly can break the world guiness record haha

hi mummies,

advise needed on BF....
how often shd we pump out, isit really necessary? so far, i've only pump once (during 4th day cos of engorgement). till now (8th day), i've not try so.

Hi Sunny,

I delivered my baby at MAH. I think the nurses there are friendly and patient. They let you take the baby out as often as you like. As a matter of fact, they are ok with it even if you wanna have your baby with you most of the time. This applies to 2-bedders and 4-bedders as well. I asked lots of questions during my stay there and they always answer me patiently. It was very assuring.

Hi I'm a mummy!,

you know your prob with your CL and others who keep thinking you can't handle bb? my hubby is going thru that... he's often interested and wants to do something for bb and my mum, intervenes and comments that he is not doing it right, why we buy crib toys for bb since bb can't see properly yet blah blah blah. everything we do, she say it's not right and bb too young to learn and all. my husband is so so frustrated. well actually i am too. i mean, parents send us to study so we learn and read about stuff so we wanna do certain things for our child differently and there they are intervening coz they think and feel and seemingly know the best coz they've been thru all these... sometimes i don't know how to talk to my mum coz once i talk to her, i start talking loudly and a squabble is on the way. then both of us face black black. not exactly siding my husband on this coz she makes me feel this way too. many times i'm so annoyed by all these supposed 'things they know best'. if it is any comfort to you, i'm in the same situation. no doubt we are first time mums so all the more they mustn't belittle us. shouldn't there be a chance for us to learn and to try methods that we would like to? i mean we're all doing it for the good of our child.

Hi Nicole,
Ya, me also wondering whether i'm having my menses or not.. the first few days after delivery, i had big blood clots with heavy flow..then about by 5th day, dramatically reduced, don't need maternity pad anymore, normal whisper night can already. Then about few days after that, become regular flow. then few days after that, become little flow. until now, still not much flow, but cannot don't put pad also. and its more brownish than red. Dunno is it menses or what leh...

btw mummies,

Re: baby carrier
have any mummies bought a baby carrier here? the type where you can piggyback your baby in front or behind of you? like baby bjorn type? any recommendations? i prefer to distribute the weight evenly on both shoulders, rather than one sided like the MIM sarong sling which i bought but don;t really like leh

thanks I'm a mummy, Anissa.
seems both hospitals have good reviews... chammm lah.... hb also doesn't know which one to choose.
BTW, did you go hospital tour at these 2 hospitals? if yes, what makes you choose TMC/MAH?

hi wendy
ya... previously me from TTC thread.

hi wendy, lib, temple, c u at wendy's place at 12nn next wed then! wendy, pls sms ur addy to us..

re: expressing breastmilk
i've stopped expressing for about a month, cos i usually latch bb on exclusively, and no one to help in feeding anyway... so no need for expressed milk. but i have a stock of frozen milk expressed last month, which can be used in emergency cases for the next few months... will prob just express to replace the emergency stock next month or so..

hi lib... i think it's easier to take a LRT to wendy's place so that we don't need to keep the stroller when on board the cab... now LRT more user friendly as in got lift so need not carry the stroller up and down the stairs... moreover, very difficult to catch a cab here and we also need to walk all the way to the main road... what do you think?

hi alabone, mummytobe...
thanks for your reply. i was quite worried and dunno if there is any wrong with my womb cos i am still having discharge.

re: burping
from my understanding, BF baby doesnt burp that much cos there is no much air being suck in while u BF. So not to worry if ur baby doesnt burp. Usually, i will hold my baby in up on my chest after BF and then try to burp him. if he doesnt burp, i will leave it in this position for ten minutes before i put him to bed.

BF is really a very tiring process.. did anyone supplement with Forumla?

Alabone, aidanee,
maybe i have seen u all in Mt E. I was also there from 1 Sept to 4 Sept.

hi ting ting,

so means its ok not to express??

Total breastfeeding mummies... are u given Vit K to feed yr baby once a week from birth???

Hi mummies,

Re: Going Out
When will you start bringing your baby out? be it for a stroll around the garden, or a trip to the supermarket or a trip to your mum's place? when is a good time to start bringing our babies out? Nowadays got dengue outbreak, i a bit scared scared to bring baby outside the house...

hi triniti,
May I check with you, you latch on for full feed on each side for how many minutes? So you don't pump at night?

re: going out
mosquitoes will fly into our house as well... actually i find more mos bites these days... hopefully with the fumigation done at our estate today things will be more controlled.

we brought zephan out a few times already... but quite stressful cos got to go out just after a feed, and sometimes he likes to feed after an hr.. schedule is totally planned around him..

cookies, yah, expressing stimulates demand artificially. so if u dun intend to store up breastmilk n going for direct latching, no need to pump diligently. may just want to store a few packs for emergency cases.

nyny
i visited a friend at MAH once - stuck in my head that it's a Catholic hospital with the wards named after Saints or smthg...
My first time at TMC - i was so impressed coz the lobby looked more like a hotel than a hospital. And it was that time that it was awarded the Superbrands thingy... So i chose there lor...
But not to say I was completely deliriously happy during my stay... on the day of discharge, hubby & I complained to the director for 30min & she gave us a discount as a gesture of apology. Plus chicken essence which i dun take... =PP Guess they gotto upkeep their Superbrands image =))

alabone
during confinement, i went to a supermarket 5mins away.. i was wearing sleeveless & shorts coz weather so hot!! Plus confinement food made me heaty.. actually during the whole month, i was so zombified i din hv chance to feel bored at home... aiya, if u really want to go out then go lor.. u think in the West the ang mo women stay cooped up at home with all windows closed wearing long sleeves & pants for a month?! Just go lah..

ting2
the mozzies egg-spurts say that Singapore should fumigate at dusk & dawn for maximum effect. This afternoon's fogging was just another "for show" session to falsely reassure us Punggolites.
re: going out
Feeding on demand is like that.. be prepared to bf in public!! So far i only hv 2 nursing blouses.. want to buy 1 more! OOOHHHH... i forgot u hv difficulty controlling your spray... sorry ah, u just go Prime Mart okie?? Or come my place also can =))

i'm a mummy
dun bring your babe out during dawn or dusk when the Aedes pests are most active. Want to go out just go lah... must choose auspicious date meh?

cookies
nope.

Hi Sunny,

The reason why I chose MAH over TMC is cos I find the latter too 'commercialise'. I go to TMC for my scans. As for hospital tours, nope, I didn't go for any.

Cost wise, I think both are abt the same. I opted for 4-bedder. Induction with epidural and vaccum. Auto-upgrade to 2-bedder when we ask the nurse. Only need to top up with cash $500+.

Hi Adel, my beautician has 2 ways to open up the pores. One way is to use warming mask, and the other is use her portable steamer. But I always ask her to use the steamer coz I think steamer can open the pores bigger....heehee : )

nyny
oh, another more impt reason why i chose TMC was that the average bill size was slightly lesser than MAH. Info available on their websites.

hi nicole,

i was in ward B room 4427. went for mrs yeo's breastfeeding class on saturday i think... were you there?

just to let you know, initially when i was breastfeeding a bit more regularly, i supplemented with formula coz baby didn't seem to be filled with my breastmilk. he would feed for one whole hour on both breasts, fall asleep and then wake an hour later obviously hungry coz he starts opening his mouth so big and starts sticking out his tongue. so i did supplement with formula. now, he is mostly on formula coz i've got ornamental breasts that can't produce milk.

hi wendyg,

i would love to go out but seems like my mum has a prob with that and would probably question why i cannot even tahan for a month... i suppose i will tahan and not go anywhere for this one month.

Hi miso
my gal so far is okay. but when the maid carries ds, she will come disturb. only sometimes if i carry ds, she will also want to baobao.. so i try todistract her by asking her to kiss dd or sayang dd

thanks kathy, will call her. btw her sessions how long ah? i hope she doesnt push her prdts cos i am an origins fan..

hey triniti, i think 750 within half hour is already guinness record. yesterday, my personal record was 125ml one pump.. i already largi happy cos finally this pump can meet demand.

about going out.. for my first bb.. u wont believe it.. i hardly left the house with her for almost 6mths.. i so scared.. even if we go out say to buy groceries.. it is like going for war.. make sure she drank.. pack everything.. rush to ntuc, dump everything, then quickly drive back.. i really envy those moms.. so stylo. just put bb in pram then go out ON THEIR OWN.. my gosh..i think i sure garang gabo. now i go maid, so anything.. maid can help

u all got buy nursing wear.. i bought this nice tshirt and polo tshirt nursing wear recently.. only $38. got sleeves.. now hard to find nursing wear with sleeves.. all so largi sexy type which i am not comforable to wear

Hi cakey
sorry for such a late reply. Din see your question until today.
I will let you know my current daily breastfeeding/pumping schedule

8.00-9.00am- I usually wake up at this time to have my breakfast and by this time breasts are filling very full.

9.00-10.00am-I will spend about 15-20 mins to express my milk till very little/no milk oozing out. ( in the first week I will take half an hour, I am now going into my second week of breastfeeding coming monday, my boy is born on 0509)

2.00-3.00pm- latch my boy 20 mins on one breast( he used to have to spend about 30-40 mins on one breast but now he is more than a week old and he can suckle more consistently even though his eyes are closed) he usually spend only about 10 mins on the second breast

4.00-5.00- pumped again with the same timing but this time amount is not very constant(ie 250ml for both bottles) Usually about 220ml

8.30-9.30pm- Latch my boy again and repeat the whole cycle

10.30-11.30pm- pump again for 15-20 mins.usually will get 225-250ml.

So as you can see, I slept about 7hrs straight at least before the next pump and I think it is also a matter of getting your breasts to get used to it. I feel that if you were to pump more times during your first few months, it is much harder to reduce it. Of course you can pump as many times you like, just be mindful that if you were to reduce one pump there is more chances to get engorged but different ppl might have a different constitution.

tulip
750ml is for the whole day !!!haha..This is my second week of breastfeeding so dun think I have so much to pump until later hee

triniti: 750ml in a day is actually considered a lot le!! somemore u can still sleep for 7 hours! *peifu* i wish my milk supply will be like urs!then my hb's granny wun look down on me le! grgr

Hi Adel
Haha, maybe having a good confinement lady, less stress, positive mindset and less nagging from ppl around you helps. If you think you have lotsa milk, you will have more in the long run. Sometimes, it is a self-fufilling prophecy in the case of mind over matter
happy.gif
Remember drinking lotsa hot fish soup helps..I think.Keep yourself happy and express after each breastfeed to your child can help to 'empty' most of the milk and the 'factory' can produce more when the milk has run out.

hi triniti,
wow really envy you can pump so much and also your boy's feeding can fit your schedule.. For my girl, her feeding hour is really very very irregular and so diff to have any pumping schedule...

For the 750ml your CL will use to bottle feed him in the day time and night time right? how long it takes to warm up the milk from the fridge? So far the few times that I manage to express i let her drink quite soon (haven't put in fridge). Cos once she's awake will scream so loud and can't tahan for milk to warm up... *Sigh* Wonder how to train her to feed on schedule so that I can prepare milk first and avoid those screaming..

re going out
wendy, my boy v unpredictable one... today brought him down to kopitiam right after his feed to eat breakfast, and barely 15 min he started to fuss... haiz... thought he wld nicely koon for 1/2 hr...

hi ladies ...

brought my boi for his check up today and his jaundice is at 15.8 ... so we decided to admit him into the hospital immediately ... only 1hr away from him and i miss him already ....

told the nurse to cup feed with when necessary ... if i am there i will then latch him on direct ...

re: pumping

i usually latch my bb on direct ... but when I tried pumping last night ... i could only get 5ml from 1 breast after 10mins .... am i to impatient so it would be better to invest in a better pump like ameda pump? am using the avent manual pump now ...

okie me go zzzz ... wan go visit my boi later liao ... will log on less often cos my mummy wans me to zzz more oso ...
