i believe in chinese too, but knowing more lang is always an asset, the thing is, proficiency, and being effective.
The chinese kindy idea is interesting, which sch is it?
i rem this american who makes chinese the first lang for his daughter cos' he believes the mega potential of china.

K's mom
i always quote u as an example when i discuss lang learning with hub. i really think u have an edge! envy envy!

On lang again, do u gals have a good chinese dictionary to recommend? it's high time i invest in one, forgot how to write already!

For eng, i like collins cobuild.

Hello Meilan and Jan, thanks for the info on the protective sheets. A once a while will agree go to bed without diaper and I do need to get these protective sheets so that my bed will not be smelly smelly ! Before that we are using the baby changing mat and there is tendency he wet the bed becos he moves about during sleeping.

Hi Catherine,

We may be living very near cos I am living along Yio Chu Kang road now. Mine is nearer to Serangoon area. How abt you ? If very near, maybe we can pop by during weekends & let our kids mingle.

Hi Joanne,

The place that I am staying is full with mosquitoes. I am using several ways to keep them away. I am also using the electric mosquito repellent, recommend Mortein brand. I hang mosquito satchets, EQ brand. We are also growing Marigold plant to drive away mosquitoes in the garden. I am stuck by them many times on my leg and they are so itchy. I did not use Mopiko cos it leaves down scar on my leg, so I use Soov Moquitoes Gel to apply. My three boys are stuck by mos and the gel works well for them.

Hi Catherine, my personal experience in learning a language is you need opportunity to converse. I studied Jap during secondary for more than 2 years but can only write and read without understanding becoz no chance to practise. Then attended conversational course when I started working, but now still back to square one. sigh... No flair.

Re languages. Hmm, seeing the great China potential, maybe we should get our kids to speak Hindi too?
biggrin.gif
Sorry, no offence.

Moshi,
I'm definitely towards Spanish and German. Comes in handy in Europe and Latin America (except Brazil, I think). Find French not easy to learn. In my previous work environment, most of them speak German, 1-2 conversational French.

jan

ya lor learn 3rd lang but never use wasted.
i took 3rd lang but aft a few months drop out...
my fren continued but he later got scholarship so 3rd lang also not much help in this case

sarah
haha but hindi is not their official lang. i think they have a lot of diff 'dialect' ya?
but they speak eng le
my bro in law used to go there a lot, lang is not a prob

hi jan,
hey, c's bite is also completely out. next time prob got to wear braces. let me know what your dentist says after your visit!

re: third language
i think where language is concerned, need a flair for it. & have to use it often, otherwise you will forget very soon.

ha ha want multi racial experience? go PCF. c got malay, indians in her class and she is able to tell me who is what race

Hi Joanne,
Forget to mention, the 4th thing we did to get rid of mozzies is burn citronella oil over burner.

Hi Sarah,
Marigold is one of the 5 plants that repel mozzies. Hubby read from this website and bot the marigold seeds to grow. Actually he shld buy the plant mah but he told me he wanted to enjoy planting and see the plant grow. No wonder there are still mozzies "attacking" us..

Moshi and Sarah,
Thanks for the info on Eng and Chinese dictionary. Realised that I do not have them and will buy based on your recommendations. Thanks ya !

K's mom,

dun mention. Just a click away .. thou scanning the pics took some time .. i know some of the words are a little blur (cos i did not press the centre of book too hard) so i hope u can figure them out. Was worried that the file wun go thru since it is a pretty big file.

I have not get the juicer yet. Dun think i will get it till i move to a bigger house haha. Dun hv cupboard space for the appliance. I am safekeeping these recipes cos they seem pretty useful.

Jan,

prefer the weekday class cos weekend is oh so precious for outdoor with kids and daddy. Furthermore, i m always stuck with what to do with the kids at night during weekdays.

Thanks for the info.

hmm 8pm class .. your kids no school the nex day ? mine wakes at 7am, so 8 to 9 pm class seems not possible. anyway, who noes we will be in the same class for other terms?
happy.gif

ky,

was told that i can redraw anytime, no nid to wait for a term, just hv to give them a month notice. Anyway i m not thinking of withdrawing first haha .. wonder if boy dun like, can i continue the lesson myself so that i can teach him myself?

btw, june teaches ryan herself. She seems to be good in art craft, and now even music?

Moshimoshi,

haven think of letting my kids take another language .. but i do hope they can master their english well (not like daddy and mummy).

Hi moshi2!

Please don't do that... don't quote me please... I'm no "guru" (as in the Dr. So-and-so type) in language teaching/learning ok? I only try to do it for a simple living, haha!

Yep... those are the two schools of thoughts... and if Mel's like Serenade's kids, another school of thought btw, left handers learn FL with ease! Heard about this, read about this and seen some of such cases in my classes... seem pretty true so far.

Malay/Jap... take your pick.
Malay coz it's phonetically easy and the good learning environment, plus Mel will have to have different ethnic friends to play with.
Or Jap since you can converse with her. But writing will be tough.

Hi Catherine/Jan,

You did third lang too??? Me too, me too, though the third lang that I did in sec sch has now become a very integral part of my life. Luckily for us, my dh and I share the common third lang!
happy.gif

On language learning:

ACtually, I forced my dh to come to a Malay course with me when we got our Indonesian helper then. Haha... that was so funny, learning another lang with my dh! Didn't know he was sooooo slow!!! Oh... gee, now I know where this competitiveness in my son stems from!

So ladies, invite your dh to do a foreign lang with you for some couple time or laughs???

Hi 4chongchong!

Need your professional health care advice here:

What kind of cough syrup do you give your daughter? WHat's safe? (in terms of alcohol level) Prospan, safe?

What kind of nasal decongestant do you give your daughter?
Dimetapp from Wyeth safe?

Otherwise, what other suggestions do you have? I mean the generic drugs over the shelf type that are safe for self-medicating children.

Hi Meilan/Jo/ky,

Kiddy palace sells those rubber sheets too, @ about SGD 19.90. Rubber on the reverse side and cotton on top. I place one each under Bryan's and Kristin's bedsheet respectively to protect the mattresses from "accidents".

Hi Sherlyn...

How I wish the drinks just pop out of my laptop screen!! really yummy recipes... I just feel thirsty every time I look at them... And then I feel so "detox'ed" after that! Haha!

Hi chloe!

Yeah... I'm a West'ender!!! I grew up in the West, studied mainly in the West, sometimes central, still hope to find our dream home in the west (Clementi/Ulu Pandan/Holland area)... But not yet! Our address in Sg is however very, very central!!!! No like though

Hi ky!

See... that's why I'm asking! I haven't done my homework for P1 registration. I haven't been observing the balloting trends in the schools I thought I might enroll my son in. In fact, my dh and I haven't even quite decided on anything yet.

So what should I do if I want to start school hunting now??? Any steps to follow?
I don't think we'll be able to do any PV... at least not for now.

wow...so many posting.

I am not sure whether it is the weather. I am getting very tired lately. It has been pouring here.

Think will not be able to pop in as frequent as I am also do house cleaning to clear away things.

I should be back in mid-January if everything goes well.

Catherine, welcome to the thread. Your ds shared the same name "Kai" as my boy.

Hi chloe
yeh, PCF for multi-racial experience? how true!

Hi K's mom
My hub went for japanese course with me too,at the CC, forced him to, and u are so right, men are slow with languages. I kept poking at his pronunciation and he retorted by saying my strokes are lousy. but it was still fun, it was like waiting to poke at each other during the lesson.

Cough syrup, a word of warning on Silomat, a cough supressant, it's recently being recalled in clinics here, caused irregular heartbeat in some children.
4chongchong , care to comment more?

hi sarah
ray is for spanish, i am for french, anyway, it's all talk now, who knows mel will say a big NO to all.haha

Hi Pris, are you coming back for good in mid Jan? btw, you mentioned before abt Kai being a gifted kid and if there's any test/assessment that can be done? Any progress on that? I've got a recommendation for you ... the school which B goes to for total brain does do IQ assessment and the teacher/owner sounds very experienced, but the service is apparently being offered to enrolled kids ...

K's mom, I'm not expert on school hunting ... n these were discussed before. remember when moshi asked abt the criteria before and to her, most impt is morning session coz Mel needs to nap in the afternoon? I guess each of us has our own set of criteria for schools... there's no steps, though I wish there is too. btw, it's common not to decided on anything yet. we have 2 more years to go, so no rush actually

Sherlyn, yamaha probably has its own criteria which is different from CC

.ky.

hi joanne
i read that kids are prone to mozzie bites bcos of the way they smell. they perspire easily and apparently mozzies love the smell. how abt turning the air-con more to ensure they are kept cool?

hi K's mom

Do check with school whether they are cutting down the number of classes. Ds' school used to have 10 P1 and now down to 8.

This is fun too, sarah, extra balloons for this game?

Balloon Brigade Relay Race
This fast-paced race lets winners go out with a real bang.

WHAT YOU NEED:
Balloons

HOW TO PLAY:
1. Assemble each team in single file with the first player in each line holding a balloon.

2. When the whistle blows, each lead player passes the balloon between her legs to the next person in line. Each recipient, in turn, passes the balloon overhead to the teammate directly behind her.

3. The balloon is passed alternately between players' legs and over players' heads all the way down the line. When the last person receives the balloon, he or she races to the front of the line and the balloon pass resumes.

4. The relay continues in this fashion until one of the original players regains position at the front of her line and pops the team balloon.

Do you think our kids can handle this?

Balloon Sandwich
This race, a feat of cooperation, works on the premise that two backs are better than one. The rowdy romp is best held outside or in a spacious room.

WHAT YOU NEED:
Balloons

HOW TO PLAY:
1. Begin by choosing partners and lining them up back to back at a starting line. Place a balloon (not a helium one) between their backs so that they must hold it there and not let it fall to the ground (emphasize no hands!).

2. At the sound of a whistle, the pairs must take off in this position, shuffling their way toward a finish line. If the balloon pops or drops, they must return to the starting line for a replacement.

3. The first sandwich to cross the line wins.

Hi k'mom, yep - took 3rd lang during sec sch days. Good that you put the lang you have learnt to good use. Tschuess! Think it should be easier to study a foreign lang in sch now. During our time, have to travel to another sch near Newton for the classes, I remember. So much time wasted - no MRT! But it's just an excuse bcoz there are classmates who completed and passed with flying colours!

Hi sherlyn, they go to fullday childcare so yes - it will be a mad rush back home to shower and zzz. That's why I schedule enrichment classes for weekends but for yamaha, no choice, if my son doesn't join for this Oct term, he will exceed the age limit for the Junior course next yr. Join first then try to reschedule for next term, if we continue. We may meet you on your way out. Shout if you see me bcoz I will be juggling 3 "kids", include hubby...heheee!

Jpooh, schools up their # of classes last yr for Dragon yr peak. Most schools down at least 1 to 2 classes this year, and applications this year is more "hiong" than last year... who knows how many classes there'll be 3 yrs later. btw, does J take schoolbus and how long's the bus journey?

Moshi, luckily we are not going to be there. Though B has overcome the fear of balloons, such "exciting" games would be beyond him ... and I think the kids would rather bounce the balloons around rather than following the rules, but have fun!

.ky.

J's school kept to 8 even for Dragon year.... Dh sends J to school every am and he takes 10 mins to walk home on his own.

1st year he was on the bus. 6.30am the bus wld arrive and be home by 1.40pm so decided to walk home instead from 2nd half of P2 onwards.

Hi Jan ... u mean JMC max age limit is 4 yrs 11 months old? I thot the JMC is from 4-6 yrs old? I've seen 2 sisters which I believe are 5 and 6 in B's class... there are 9 kids and I think easily 6 kids are at least 5

.ky.

Hi ky, the age group is for 4 and 5 yrs old. They cut off the entrance age by the year of birth. So for my son born in yr 2002, he can join this year 2007 but can't join as a new student for the course in the Jan 2008 class.

Hi jpooh, your son walks home on his own in P2? Does he have to cross busy roads? We were thinking when is a reasonable age to allow the child to commute back home safely from school on his own.

Abt gifted child, how do we know abt it and where can we send them to test it ? Just asking for my own information knowledge & not for Aston whom I think he's gifted.

hi jan
u r rt abt 3rd lang... time wasted in travelling n not put use... it was the in thing during our time. but the travelling plus comitment to ECA...
