(2003) Calling all 2003 babies

Hi apricot!

I would use tic-tac-toe like a bingo game.

BOth games can be used to test if your child has successfully learnt a word.

You can also do it with numbers too.

You see, tic-tac-toe has nine boxes, 3x3.
So put a word in each box. Of course, your boy must know how to play the game first. So, if you choose a field, you must read it first before you can cross/circle it out. Then three in a row wins, ok?

Bingo... same thing...
You can have like about 3x3 first, too many would be confusing to our 4's right now.

Then when you read a word, he must cross out the word he hears. When he gets one word crossed out in each row, then he can shout bingo!

Counting can be fun too...

like 1 - oops - 3- oops 5 - oops... etc , you can leave out the even number or the odd numbers... whatever.

Hmmm... what other classroom games I used to play??? Need to jog my memory a little... but there are plenty of games to play with language learning and counting.... in the meantime, I think the other teachers among us here can also share their experience. So over to you, Moshi2 and Pris! ;)

Hi Kristin's mom,
Can't give all the credit to B. Prior to that, we have been telling them to take turns whenever they get into a scuffle over who to press the buttons. But one day, just as we reached the lift, B told C that he would call for the lift, but she would get to press for the floor in the lift. When we got into the lift, he would tell Cheryl which button to press and praise her when she did it right. And that worked out really fine. I like the way he gave instructions to the sister and the cooperation part

Shouldn't B in the 5's class this year? Can you request for B to be placed in the 5's class? For those kids from France, most do have a hard time to catch up and adjusting to the Sg system upon their return. So, you might want to minimise the unpleasant experience for B by homeschooling him a bit, like what Serena mentioned. But B is doing great now. He's starting to read and if you continue what you are doing now, I'm sure he'll have no problem. B's one smart boy.

You ask about how to teach multiplication earlier. Well, as soon as B masters the basic addition facts, you can start him on the concept. Start with the easier ones first. E.g 2+2, 3+3, 4+4,... Instead of saying 2+2 etc, you can try asking him what's 2 twos, 2 threes, 2 fours and so forth. Once he gets a hang of it, try 2+2+2, 3+3+3 ... and again phrase it as 3 twos, 3 threes. Along the way, you can also show him that 2+2 = 2 twos = 2 times 2. Another way of teaching multiplication is using manipulatives. I'm currently doing the easier ones with B, i.e 2+2, 3+3... Multiplication is just an extension of addition. But before you think I'm advancing him, tell you the truth, I am taking a step back to concrete his concepts further. Will share with you more on teaching math if what I am doing with B works by end of the year.

Meilan...it is your gmail account.

Wow, all of you found the cookie cutters. I am asking my friend to get for me the hello kitty ones and also the mooncake cutters in HK if she can find them.

Hi Sherlyn

waterfun's price is relatively cheap.... that works out to 1 month of 30 minutes at $60/mth. I've seen 1 coach at my estate charging that for single student coaching and that to me is by far the cheapest. hm, but waterfun seemed to have a lot of gimick that they do not fulfil ... I recalled if I'm not wrong, they have a promo on a free trial if one writes in to them. I did that sometime ago but never hear from them.

In fact on tuina, there's 1 in jurong east that we go to, and the physician specializes in kids with learning disabilities. She uses acupuncture too ... I've seen kids with minor to major problems, like not talking yet to brain damage ... some go everyday for treatment and over time, they did improve, so I do agree that this chinese method of healing does work.

K's mum/Serenade ... must jot down all your pointers for future reference .. too much to absorb ... maybe should post in blog?

.ky.

Hi K's mom

Did you mean u bot Logico set ? Is the gp of people selling Chinese set or English ? I move from Punggol to Serangoon recently. I rented out my house and will move back in 2-3 yrs time.

Wow wow, seems like kids here like roti prata !
Aston will beam with happines if he see roti prata on children's day party. Maybe his treat for that day's breakfast is ROTI PRATA.

Hi Star,
Yu Guo tuina is the same as wat Ky describes on the one at Jurong East. But Jurong East is not a branch of Yu Guo. Tuina is for babies and children up to 12yrs old. Can go for normal health maintenance or when you fall sick for common illness like flu, fever and cough. My 3 boys are there mainly for health mainteance.

Thanks mommies for your comments and suggestions. K's mom, I like the game idea but lazy to prepare the materials. So I improvised and re-attempted to teach JK "si4" again, using a calendar with the lunar months and days. I showed him the character and asked him to put a circle whenever he spotted a "si4" and pretended to be slower than him. He actually did very well, even after I kept the character away. So I now suspect that he might actually know the word but just hated to be tested unlike in the game context when he set his goal to win me.

ky, I think JK is still learning stroke in sch, not numbers in Chinese yet. But in his cc last year, they seemed to have finished up to 10 though he doesn't seem to remember whatever he has learnt there.

Somehow the site was down the whole of yesterday?

Anyway... this was what I wanted to post yesterday.

Hi moshi2!

sama sama... me very lazy here. Work two days with him intensively then stop for two weeks. haha!

More often than not it's mommy who doesn't have
to mood for learning! :p

Hee, you like Dawn Meehan too?! Hmmm, why don't you start a tag? But about 6 quirks??? Actually, it can be anything! I once read one on laundry habits! :D

hi star!

in frankfurt with dh for his posting with 2 kids on tow. yep, teaching a foreign lang. (no prize for guessing which one) is my profession in Sg, but right now am on leave to take care of my family overseas ;)

Hey... you are doing well too, playing games with Cl
happy.gif
Children just love games, don't they?

errm, no, my kids don't like roti prata. maybe that's because we don't spend enough time in Sg. But i was certainly craving for them during my 1st pregnancy.

at this age, my children just hate their vegetables, meat, anything else except for their plain carbo. Sigh! I usually mix everything up in a bowl for them. Serving them separate dishes will just encourage them to pick their food in an even more extreme manner. At first I had doubts about my "culinary skills". Now, I don't think that's the case anymore. They are just plainly not interested in food, even when we dine in good restaurants.

hi serenade!

hey, you are the math expert that I must come to now and ever often for advice!
thanks for the systematic ideas to teach math. hmm, as you can see, math isn't my forte!

right now, we are playing UNO every night. it's great coz B learns to distribute cards. he needs to distribute 3 sets of 5 cards for each game. He needs to remember how many times we play the game. Usually a number of 5 is the limit for the night. and he needs to identify and use his cards both in numbers and colours. and sometimes he needs to add (with the +2 cards). ;) So UNO is a lot of math here at the moment.

we are really slow, gotta get him started on writing numbers.

dh just went for a meeting with the teachers last night (6pm - 7+pm). I stayed at home to babysit. heard that B will be learning more writing this year. the emphasis of writing in the correct strokes, i.e. top to bottom, left to right. there might be some word recognition, but the alphabet is still the main focus, both upper and lower case. coz apparently, most kids still cant do it at this age. (phew! I thought we were slow! then again, these are the US kids that we are talking about!) math is also basic. I think mainly counting. but they'll proceed to learn to tell time (which btw I have stopped teaching B for eons now. You know, ever since the time I last mentioned about the clock to you.) I got only one assurance: Her main aim is to get the kids to sit down and do work quietly for 30 min in total concentration. And get the kids to raise their hands when they want to ask a question. She said in achieving that, the kids will have no problems in kindergarten or school later on!

Hmmm, seem to remember one of the moms here telling us about this too for P1 preparation. I think it must be Jess.

Yep, Serena's right. Homeschool is the next best thing to get him closer to the system in Sg.

Hi Serena!

You are one lucky woman, jetting about for your vacation again!

Enjoy yourself and your time out with your family!

Dear mummies,

Has anyone got feedback on using J&J baby oil on
yr children's hair & skin? Heard mineral oil is
not that effective in terms of absorption rate.

Jazzie
I avoid mineral oil at all costs, even for products for myself, it is one ingredient that will make me put the product back to the shelf.

"According to many companies that produce "natural" cosmetics, mineral oil and petrolatum are terrible ingredients because they come from crude oil (petroleum) and are used in industry as metal-cutting fluid (among other uses) and, therefore, can harm the skin by forming an oil film and suffocating it. "

sorry about double posting!

Hi Meilan!

Looks like JK can't resist the temptation of fun and the competitive spirit of games!

Yeah... great idea with the calendar there. Think I shall use it more often too. I've been using it lately to teach Bryan to identify the words of the month and soon, it will be days of the week. While doing it, I told him about the birthdays of the family. He had great fun circling them!

Also, another hot topic this day: I had him finishing up his dinner with a Sg Zoo map. Quite fun. Just told him I wanted to get from point (polar bear) to point (White tiger). Great coz he's like doing mazes on one hand and on the other hand, he's also learning about animals!

Simple things sometimes just escape our eyes... I really had no idea that reading map could be so much fun in the first place.

Hi K's mom
U are tempting me with UNO! shall go steal my brother's ;)
oh, going to dig out my zoo map too!

Speaking of maps, we have a world map placemat that Mel looks at quite often, i tell her where Daddy's been for work, where her aunt is now and where grandma's helper comes from. she decided nepal's cool and want to visit it. we play games by identifying flags too. FUN!

Hi Moshi,

I did a search on mineral oil. Yip, its a by
product of the lowest grade of oil refinery
process. So think I better stop using.

Either to convert to jojoba or olive oil, both oil are good for children? Wat u reckon?

Cindy, if u can get hold of this activity book "Animal Stickers Atlas", Bryan will not only be learning about animals bit also where they come from! Simply mount on the atlas wall chart, and give him the animal stickers (130 of them)to stick on the map which is divided into major habitats.
the website given on the back of the book is www.hinklerbooks.com
i got it from a book sale in tampines some time back and will be keeping it for a while until mel sees more of the world! it's just too precious to use at the moment.

zoo map:
cindy, you are right, we can maze through the paths, i will include in a cat sticker to up the motivation level haha. there are symbols to learn too. toilets, phone etc and safety tips to discuss. we can extend it by giving them some animal stickers and get them to draw their own maze.

Kristin mom, you are so good in games!! It didn't even cross my mind to do that. Now I've got more ideas.

Jazzie, don't mind me asking but why do you need to apply oil on the kids? I usually just stick to lotion. I found oil too greasy.

Ky, I can't see the picture at all for the King of Chinese. Could you be a kind soul and help me out on this?

Sherlyn, I can get the cookie cutter for you in Japan if you want. But no guarantee if I can find it. How about this, if I can find it and it cost less than S$5 per set, then I buy it for you. Of course, you must let me know your fav toons.

Meilan, do you think it's safe for my girl to enter the hot spring with me? Someone told me it's abit risky for a 4 years old. I wonder if the Japanese do that with their own kids/toddlers.

Jan, I will let you know more about Japan when I'm back. Unfortunately, this time round I'm not going Tokyu. I'm heading to Hokkaido and osaka. But I'm going back to Japan in Dec and this time will be to Tokyu via U.S. So, can't give you any feedback on Tokyu till Dec which I guess you will already be going. Ha..

Hi Moshi,
That's great fun way to learn countries. Can I know what world map placemat you have & where can I get it ? Is it table placemat with world map design ?

Hi Serena,

It's just a habit. When I was in overseas for 2 yrs, the weather was dry. So been using it faithfully since then. hahahaha

Plus I washed my dds hair everyday, as they perspire profusely.

hi apricot, yap, same lady. say hi to her the next time u see her ... we spoke for quite long when we met to collect the materials. she's a great lady!

Hi Serena, king of chinese here's an eg. She has quite a few but it's the same idea

board-post.cgi

Hi Ky,
The pics are so brightly illustrated and nice colors too.. cant wait to get mine from her !
Yah, she is very very Shichida & GD experience on her 5yo boy and we can seek her help if ever we need.

Hi Sarah,

There are 3 books and 120 cards. Contents in books and cards are same. Retail price at Bras Basah $85 per set.

Hi Apricot!

Wow... so ex!

I don't have the cards, but B's Chinese teacher in nursery sold the three books to me at, I think, twenty odd dollars! That was like two years ago though.

Actually, I haven't gone through the books with him yet coz I thought the characters were too dificult.

Hi moshi2!

Yeah... I sort of tested him, like: Errmm, I need to go to the toilet, so where can I find one? And he pointed it out to me! I even tried like KFC, carpark, entrance, exit etc. I was quite amazed at how well he knows the zoo. And he's only been to it like 4 times.

But really, B loves to read maps. We've also done his Playmobil Park, Legoland and Disneyland maps. Fun, right? Map reading is really a life skill, isn't it?

You've got a world in a placemat??!!! I want one too! Actually two! Where did you get it? I've been trying to get a decent world map to show B. We've got a really big one, but haven't got time to put it up in his room.

Great way to teach Geography to Mel! All the places that Daddy's been to, where her aunt stays and where her grandma's helper originates.
I've been trying to give B an idea of the vastness of land... just how much we drove across Switzerland to Tuscany etc... I also wanted to get him to internalise the places we've been to. Otherwise he won't remember a thing when we go back to Sg. That would be a pity. As for K, she's still a bit young to recall travelling experience.

Hmmm... we'll look for the animal atlas you recommend. But like you said, I think I'll probably save it up till when he's older. The kids just go ga-ga with stickers and want to use them all up at one shot!

Hi Serena!

Yeah... go get your maps when you are in Japan. And when you navigate, include A. She'll love to know where she is on the map! ;)

Hot spring? Isn't that not too good for her baby skin?

Hi moshi2!

Yeah, where did you get the flag chart too?

I've been teaching B to identify country flags and last year was great time coz of world cup here. ;)
