(2003) Calling all 2003 babies

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for initiating another gathering. Ladies night out is not for me esp now DH is handicapped. unless you girls want me to tag along 2 kids ?

Hi Chloe, I think my boy felt left out that day cos he said "no one want to play with me" .. so I think I need to print out those fotos and make my kids recognise all the other kids and also bring them out to meet this group of kids more often. ;-)

Jpooh, I shd have ask u to bring the top for me to see! *sigh*

Serena .. if only i hv the luxury to bake from 7pm to midnite. would love to share my bakes too .. imagine baking from 11pm to 4am ? keke

Hi Jpooh,
Heard ur girl "merlioned" at the picnic. Hey do you remember in Serenade's place, I told you that my B is another "Merlion", Wonder is R still taking formula milk, try stop that for a week see got improvement, it works for my B.
happy.gif
He no longer a "merlion" baby!

Serena,
Wow.. cant wait to have the biscuits too. Too bad my B is sick for the past few days, still coughing now!

Sarah,
No way for me too.. cos Friday my B is having his JMC class.

Hi all

Wow, all of you having fun. We were at Safra Country Club yesterday soaking in the water and went to visit the farms in Kranji area in the afternoon but we have forgotten the camera. Nevertheless, Kai enjoyed himself. There is a firefly Health Farm in Kranji too but we did not have the time to visit.

I will see some of you on 17th May and also 30th May.

Just to let all of you know that King's Ice Cream Factory is having a factory sale. We just came back from the sale with cartons of ice-cream. It is a sale worth going if you and your kids must have ice cream daily in this hot weather.

Address: 51 Quality Road. 3 bus-stop from Boon Lay interchange if you are taking the bus 79 or 246.

Sale is from 11am to 6pm on Sat and 11am to 4pm on Sun.

you gals seem to have fun ... gathering on 16th and 17th May? So happening ...

btw, some of u r going to the Museum on 25th May right? ahem ... huh, we were there yesterday. Some were fun and some were not...

Pris ... King's been having sale quite regularly, n hubby's not wanting to go coz there was a queue when we went couple of months ago ... don't tempt me, I'm out of ice-cream!

.ky.

KY, yes, King's has sale like quarter. We were there in the afternoon, no queue, bought $70 of ice-cream and a cartoon of Big M strawberry milk.

At my mum's place, there is also those students coming to knock the door selling Wall's ice-cream.

So sorry...I need a place to vent my frustration...

I am just very upset and frustrated with my mil who by the name of saying shifting house has been throwing and give the things we put in her place which she told us to away without consulting us.

I am flaming when that she gave away the Little Tike car that I got from Kai without even consulting me. And the last time throw away a bear collector bag which cost me $85 away without even asking me. Today, I simply cannot take it anymore that I demanded that she get back the little tike car for me and I will move all my things in her class which is like 2 boxes of Kai's books and thomas the train set and the little tike car to my mum's place. I think for too long that I did not make noise as not to put dh in a difficult position, Kai and myself get any fair treatment of having our stuff given away when we were in Vancouver and now his favourite little tike car given away and almost his train set as well.

I feel like yelling and screaming as I felt it is so unfair for my boy.

So sorry that I need to vent.

Hi hi, sounds like all had fun for the Labour day holiday! Sarah, I didn't go to the JB children's garden that day as kids and hubby voted for movie. Ya, the heat is killing so perfect to cool off in the pool in the afternoon. phew...!

Thanks everyone, R is back to her puking stage. sigh.....

The wipes did come in handy! Thanks Chole (din even know was yours) pie shie

After we left, we went for a hot bowl of soup noodle and so all was well.

Pris
Don't be mad, maybe yr MIL doesn't like her place to become a storage as you were away for a while. JMHO

Jpooh, we did not force her to keep our thing in fact, we wanted to store all at my mum or get a storage to store them but she insisted that we keep at her place and these are what we get when things are keep there, things she wants, she uses for her own and things that she does not need, she throw or give away without consulting us. It is on two boxes - one thomas the trains, the other books for Kai and a little tike car left at her place and she does that.

I hate it when you tell, put in my house and then do that and when we give away those clothing that Kai cannot wear when she threw away our new duplicated babywear package, she told us, can keep for number 2 why throw, waste money and dh gave away that time was to throw his frustration at her. Image dh's certificates and one of our duplicated wedding certificates all gone missing at her place. Good things, I keep all my certs at my mum and the original wedding cert at my mum. Image dh panicking dh was when he can't locate all his certs and we ransank all the things we put at my mum's place to look for his cert even though I was certain they are all over at mil's since he was doing all his application, submitting all the stuff needed over there 3 years ago.

hi Pris

Some older folks are like that. When they changed their minds but couldn't tell straight in the face and they would do all kinds of thing to hint.

My fil is like that. When my bil and his wife stayed with him for a year, fil was complaining abt his dil on all kinds of things in front of us but nothing to her. Was thinking then, were we purpose to let her know? I stayed out of it anyway.

Hi Pris, this is bad. You should blow off steam by ranting all you want on the forum, and then calm down after. Don't leave stuff there next time, what to do? You just have to let go. Old folks are cranky. I wonder how we'll be next time! :-(

Hi Sarah, any idea where we're going on 16 May? I'm a stickler for good food, hehe.

Hi all,

This thread is so happening! Let me intro myself. I have a 4+ girl born in 2003 and another girl just last year in 2007.

Just like to check, does anyone send your child to Shinchida? Am quite worried, if so many children goes..., and become so genius, then those who don't are loosing out. What's your take...?

Hi Jan,
Good thing you changed your mind on Jacob Ballas, it was very hot!

Hi Jpooh,
Glad to hear that R is alright.

Hi Jpooh,
Glad to hear that R is fine too.

Hi sheryln,
B remembers JA b'cos of his green ball
happy.gif
Yup, we should have more gatherings for the kids to know each other better. Join us on the 16th together with the kids! Lovely to have JA and YX to keep us company:-

Hi chloe,
Oh dear, hope C didn't get too upset about it. It didn't affect B much, hehe, but that was B's first taste of receiving such attention from a girl. I suppose the JG classes have brought the two of them closer. Hmm, now he'll learn to give C undivided attention the next time they meet. :)

Hi Serena,
No Japanese blood here :-( Wish we had.

Probably it's the long stay in France that gives them the rosy cheeks ;)

Hi Pris,
Hope things have settled down. At least you have a good reason to move away your stuff now.

Hi Alcovelet,
Read your blog entry on Laos. It sounds so attractive and fun. If not for the heat, I would be on my way there too!

Welcome Gin!

Nope, I don't send my kids for such expensive courses. See absolutely zero reason to.

Kids losing out? No kidding! Do shichida kids have an advantage to begin with?
happy.gif

Hi Alcovelet,
Welcome back! Yeah, sis went Vientiane (probably nearby places too) many years ago, and scenery was simply captivating.

Ok, lets talk about dinner. Was thinking about Shashlik, Esmirada.

May "babies",
Any suggestions?

Welcome Gin!

You know you may be bombarded with various replies that's against Shichida with your qn? What's there to lose out? Shichida guarantee genius? hm ... perhaps you'll like to find out more about Shichida before getting worried.

A few of us are right-brain believers. For eg, I do practise some of it at home. And btw, I do recently wonder if I want my kid to be a genius, and the answer for me is no ... a teacher recently shared with the parents a thot that God (or nature or whoever that creates life) is fair ... when a kid is classified a "genius", there are other quotients within him/her that is lesser than the norm. I've seen a few of that, so losing out ... I'm not worried. Perhaps Shichida is doing a very good job marketing a well-groomed program that got singapore parents unduly worried ...

Welcome to the group, once again!

.ky.

Hi Serenade,

B remembers JA cos of the green ball ? then next time I shall bring the green ball along to all the gatherings hehehehe ..

bringing the kids with me on the 16th ? then it wouldnt be ladies nite. keke.

Anyway holiday is coming, so i suppose we can plan alot of activities?

hi, can i know what kind of mosquito repellent do you use on your kids? And do you put it on a daily basis?

.ky.

Welcome Gin. I do not send my kids to expensive classes and also do not hv time to bring them to and fro since i hv to depend on hubby as i dun drive. Anyway I do not want my child to be genius. I guess too much of anything is not very good.

Hi Sarah,
Esmirada has good meat. Fabuous lamb kebabs. Hate the plate breaking at 9 (or is it only on weekends?) but yeah! Should be good!

Hi Serenade, Laos is 28c in summer and about 500m above sea level. It's positively cool compared to the blinding heat in Singapore.

Hi Gin, Welcome. I wouldn't worry about Shichida. What you will lose when you enroll is about $1k per term (yep, I was a sucker. My only reprieve is we only went for 2.5 lessons). Suffice to say I saw their methods - they have GOT TO BE JOKING. Try studying for university this way. I can't see how adult brains and children's brains are so radically different. There should be a control group by now - but there has never been long term research supporting their claims. The company makes so much money globally, it must be worth their while to fund the research and then use it as publicity, right? So where?

Dear Moshi,

so ... how long did you rest and relax there before you make a move ? It would be nice if I can stay there a little while longer to chat with you ..

btw, I had comments from a friend who went Mozart at musuem. They (both parent) say it is not worth it .. and they comment that the free events are nothing to wow about too. I might be giving it a miss. What abt u?

Hi Sherlyn,

I went to the Mozart exhibition on Sat & my girls enjoyed it very much. We actually stayed there for almost 2 hr without realising it!

There are different activities & the child gets to experience how life was like during Mozart's time, eg ride in a horse carriage (instead of car), make tooth powder (instead of toothpaste), write with a feather (instead of pen). There's also nice costumes with wigs/moles & make up to play dress up.

My advice is go when it is not crowded, and the assistants will be very helpful & offer interesting insights to your visit.

All, thanks about the Shichida comments... at least I'm normal... My friends who went said the parents need to follow up at home intensively which is impossible for working mums. I know I'm lazy enough not to do that, that's why still pondering.

I just try to expose them to more music and books. Flash cards - only when i remember to do it...

Hi Gin ... I know many parents who went for a term at Shichida and then do on their own. Various people do this for their own reasons ... one mum I met recently said she uses GD cards solely to teach her 2 kids to read (and she's homeschooling them), but it didn't seem to work for me (or rather I'm not dilgent enough for it to work or I didn't get the method right).

But anyway, I did contemplate (very very very long) for my number 2. But one thing surely turns me off - no breastfeeding in the class... btw, rather than Shichida, there are other types of right brain/total brain schools around ... and they are more affordable.

Hi mommies ... need to ask a "stupid" qn. does your kid know their capital letters?

.ky.

Hi ladies

Thank you for allowing me the space to vent. To all, we are confirmed relocating to Sydney in either June or early July depending on how fast the application for our visa is completed.

Alcovelet, welcome back. Well, I am praying that I will not age like mil.

Serenade, yes, I am moving all our stuff to my mum on thursday after sending Kai to school. Anyway, they should not blame Kai if he finds no motivation to go over to their place next time as there will be no toys for Kai to play after I remove all our stuff.

Gin, welcome. What is the statistics to prove that their children go under their methods become genius? And now there is another one mindchamps also using the same promotion method claiming children who went for it done better in their PSLE, Os etc and gotten ex-RGS principal on board too, I have also heard children who went through it, did not fare well.

Anyway, like Sherlyn, I don't think I will send my child for it and I do not need my boy to be a genius and consistently coaching and helping the child, will help him better in the long run.

Welcome Gin.
I'm not into 'genius' class cos it will be too stressful for me!

ky
we will apply it on R before going to school. 'Hanasaplast'

R goes by 'Upper Case' instead of 'Capital Letter'

Jpooh ... I just found out how much B knows abt Upper case/capital/mummy letter ... so R knows all of them?

.ky.

We are now very actively doing phonics lessons but I still find it hard but Kai's kindy is also doing them. Has any started spelling with your kids. So far, can would spell 1-20 without really active teaching and some other sight words. I am not too sure whether it is a good time to start him in spelling, in fact, I wanted to play boggle, scrabble with him. What do you ladies think?

Hi Sherlyn,

Are you thinking of English or Chinese comics? If Chinese, Lao Fuzi will be great. For English, our two mainstays are Asterix and Tin TIn, but they're rather wordy. The pics are fun though. Don't know if your kids like?

Hi Pris, sounds like you guys are ding great with phonics. Boggle and Scrabble -should be tonnes of fun. Maybe we can do a regular scrabble or boggle party - more fun when there's more people, and we can make it fun rather than competitive.

Hi Chloe and Sherlyn, tks for your input on the Mozart exhibition. It's at the National Museum? Sounds like we have to go there to find out.

Alcovelet, haahaa, it will be fun. Now we are doing a big of bingo for fun and hangman for learning words. Well, still must learn from all of you regarding phonics.

I am thinking of bringing Kai to the Mozart exhibition on 15 May as he has no classes that day since there is a field for am session students and Kai's fieldtrip is on 16 May. Anyone keen to go?

Pris, the 15th is a Thursday. Sign us up! We're free after 3 though, so we can catch up with you guys if you plan to meet up earlier.

Hi Sarah,Serenade and Serena,
What shld I say abt A's "good" behaviour on May1st ? We told him we are so scared from the last time we are at Botanical gdn he whine for so long & in the end we had to leave early. I chat with him must behave, cannot push and cannot force children if they do not want to play. I guess he understand it and decide to "behave". Nothing magical, really !

Hi ky!

Yeah... why do you ask about the upper case letters?
Do you mean recognition or reproduction?

Hi Gin!
Welcome... Sorry, I'm also not for those genius classes. I just want my kids to go to school for fun... Coz learning should be fun. So far, this has been the case. My husband and I would like to keep it that way. There is a time for everything, including being silly and innocent and throwing sand at friends in the playgrounds (And that I certainly frown upon...)
happy.gif

"What is this life if full or care
We have no time to stand and stare?"
Never forget this poem from William Henry Davies when I had my first literature class in Sec 1!

So what's wrong with standing and staring right now? For adults? And what's more for children of preschool age?

Hi Pris!
I haven't started on spelling proper, as in with paper and pen. But B and I always like to put words together while we're in the car or waiting for the bus.
According to his teacher, he's pretty ready in the sense that he could tell the ending of words well. And he's also chunking up letters to make up words. We do things sometimes like, sh - oot, sh - -oo, so that the difference in ending will be apparent to the ear too. But so far, it's all ad hoc, no structure and definitely not on our way to Boggle and Scrabble.

Maybe Alcovelet and Serenade can give you more details on spelling.

Hey, it must be exciting to move to another totally different continent! Enjoy! Lucky Kai... if he doesn't want to go, which is highly unlikely, TAKE ME!
happy.gif

K's mum, Kai is beginning to show some interest in spelling out words by himself and sometimes, he will ask me to sound out words he has written.
We have been spelling out words and bending sounds to form words. As for phonics, we are going very slowly, I find it difficult to teach phonics.

In fact, recently he enjoys Non-fiction books so much that we have completed a study about Fish and now going into birds, and he is going to the bird park with his teachers and we will go again on our own for fieldtrip.

As for going to Sydney, he can't wait to go too, he wants to go and cuddle a koala bear, chase after the kangaroo and to see the wombat. So we definitely have to find a zoo or a wild life park nearby to bring him. And he is thinking of even building a bird house.

I am sure all of you also have alot of fun in Germany. It is a petty that we are not going to UK, if not, I will go crazy over all the nice colonial building. Remember making dh drives all the way in NZ to one of the towns where there are lots of colonial buildings.

Alcovelet, not sure what time we will be there as I will probably meet up a friend earlier for a meal before heading there with Kai. Have not brought Kai to this type of museum, the last one we went was all about Dinosaurs which he is very interested.

Thanks Chloe for the Mozart input. I think my boy would love to sit in the carriage and perhaps play dress up, but he certainly wouldnt be bother who mozart is. Now that you make the exhibition sounds so interesting ... I am kind of tempted again hahaha.

Hi K's mom, like that attitude, yeah! I had wonderful memories of my own childhood largely pertaining to my family. I can't imagine not replicating it for my son. That's partly why we homeschool - to get away from classes and comparisons, to do things at his pace, and most of all, to have tonnes of free time (ok, the other big reason is he hates school and classes). I know we can't hide forever, but for now, it feels right.

It sounds like B is really into his phonic/spelling-type lessons. Whatever works for the kids!

Pris, Kai sounds totally engaged in his environment. Phonics - if it helps, I printed index cards to put the words close to each other so he could see and sound the differences. I made sets of the same words in different placements and fonts so the guy couldn't memorize - this was because he was used to sight reading (ie, memorizing) before, so I had to get him out of the habit. Another friend of mine just went through the book slowly with the child, chunk by chunk. K's mom's method is interesting too. You might want to experiment to see what works for Kai.

RK's never been to the National Museum. Always a 1st time!

Hi Pris, my ds loves dinos too and I had to learn the different dinosaurs at such an old age! Saw in papers that the Science Centre is featuring dinosaurs if Kai is interested.

Hi, talking about koalas, we will be going goldcoast for holiday...yippee! Had anyone been to the glow worm cave, at Springbrook National Park? Worth a visit?

Jan, I can't really remember where we gone for glow worm in. Can't remember where it is Aussie or NZ.

As for the dinosaurs, Kai is waiting for the exhibition to start. I am not too sure whether Kai can still remember all the dino's names now haahaa...it was a year ago when we went to see dinosaurs in the museum.

Alcovelet, I am going through slowly with him. Lately, we have been reading about birds and lot of Han Christian Andersen's books.

Sherlyn, wow, comics, a good ideas to start children on that, I remember that was what we used for relunctant readers in school.

The other place that I want to visit is the fireflies health farm in Kranji. Waiting for my brother to be free to go together.

Hi Jan, good to hear from you again!! Going Gold Coast!! That's great but beware of the queues at amusement rides. Your children would love to take pictures with Zorro, wonderwoman, slyvester and tweety. When we were there, bel and me were running after wonder woman!! Die die also must take photo with her!!

Sheryln, are you looking for chinese comics or English? I started on Bel this set of chinese comics and she's hook!! Imagine she doesn't even like chinese. Now I see her trying to read other chinese books.

Apricot, so sorry that I missed you out! As I could only bake after work, I have quite limited time to bake more. I must have run out of cookies!! Sorry, next time Aston will get first priority and IF I forget please remind me!!

Pris, I think it's great that Kai loves to read non-fiction books. They can really get vast information from these books. Bel is also into non-fiction books these days. That's how she knows about American bald eagles and Salmon. We should work on this area of their interest. Maybe both of them should meet and exchange information!!!?? Ha.. kidding.

Pris,
how old are your children? they can read already? How do u get them interested in non-fiction books? I tried reading such books, but she's not interested at all to sit through....
