Hope to see u & Kai.

Hi all,
I'm so tired!!! Little C was hospitalised for 3 days for high fever & febrile fit. Thankfully her fever is gone now, but still coughing. And there's 30% chance of getting fits again when she runs a temperature next time. Anyone whose kids have fits before?

Hi Apricot,
Yeah, will collect the books from you then.

Hi Moshi,
So swaku. Just realised I just have to be logged on to PC to msn via Skype (when someone popped me just now.) Would you like to PM me your Skype username? Mine is my full name.

Hi women!
Anybody has a whiney, sensitive kid?

Mine just burst into tears again when I picked him up fr sch today. He was afraid of this huge, noisy rubbish truck that we have to pass by on the way home. The kid was quite inconsolable and when I entered our condo, I had to drop my things on the floor, give him a brief hug (in front of surprised security guards/neighbours), and then distract him quickly to calm him down... Tmrw will bring him the other way to avoid the truck.

But the behaviour is typical of him, sigh, although better since he turned 4... He gets upset pretty easily (although the same excitability gives him great enthusiasm abt things as well). Anyone has stories of sensitive kids to share?

hi HL

Heard abt this kind of sensitivity during a ADHD parent support session. Not sure is it relevant.

"Some can be affected by many aspects of normal everyday life, especially behaviour, sensitivity to noises in the home, social interaction, speech and language development and learning.

Language is composed of many sound frequencies. Those involved in the English language range from around 125hz to around 4500 hz. Mechanical noises, whistles, squeaks, etc, are usually perceived up to about 8000hz.. All the frequencies need to be perceived at approximately the same decibel levels to facilitate comfortable hearing and effective listening.

Unbalanced hearing or acute hearing at particular frequencies can result in language delay, ADD or ADHD type behaviour, inability to concentrate, difficulty following multi step instructions and inappropriate reactions to environmental noise.

Auditory Integration Training helps to modulate the frequencies."

"Ms June Webb suggested that parents bring their children to the ENT Clinic at the National University Hospital (contact Saira Mathews at 6772-4479) to check for hearing related impairment and also the child ‘s sensitivity to various sound frequency levels (Tympanogram, Pure Tone Audiogram and Oto-acoustic Emissions Test)

Children who are more likely to benefit from the Auditory Integration Training (AIT) will have 7 or more of the items below

Has a history of hearing loss or ear infection

Does not listen to verbal instructions 50% or more of the time

Does not learn well through the use of the auditory channel

Cannot relate what is heard and what is seen

Frequently misunderstands what is said

Ask for repetition of verbal instructions

Has short attention span

Easily distracted by background noise

Experience problems with sound discrimination

Startled by sudden noise or movement

Notice sounds before others do

Give unusual descriptions of sounds or auditory stimulation

Constant humming or audible self-talk

Need frequent "quiet time" to regain mental energy and composure

Has an articulation problem

moshi, personally I love 1 litre of tears and Dream again. Attention Please is quite cute.

Delicious Relationship is not too bad. It is about a love developed between a chef and a CEO's daughter who loves the food in the restaurant.

Nodame Cantabile is about a love developed between two musician. One is a prodigy and the other plays music by hearing and does not really know how to do note reading.

Hi Chloe,

Oh dear, poor girl! Must be traumatic just to be so ill, let alone be hospitalized. Hope she get's well soon!

Hi All,

I really enjoyed Hui Li's blog. It's really fun and happy. Here's mine. http://alcovelet.blogspot.com/ Mine is kind of just about my son and I, so you can expect the usual mummy adulation (yikes!). Pls do pm me all of yours so I can get to know you guys better.
happy.gif

Hi Hui Li,

Sigh. I think Jpooh's list is pretty comprehensive for adhd. But then again, your kid might be completely normal. My son is like yours - very sensitive to sound, to everything actually. He used to cry everyday at Julia Gabriel when they started their ra-ra song at the last bit of class. The psychologist I brought him to last year even thought he had CAPD (central auditory proccessing disorder). Just in case, it means that the child has difficulty making sense of the sounds around him, like background noise has the same significance as sound from a person speaking directly to him. One sign of this is if your son spoke very late, which wasn't the case for my son.

Like you pointed out, the same sensitivities make them more enthusiastic and maybe even more tuned into details I would never have seen with my adult jaded eyes, so it makes life more, shall we say, exciting!

Hi chloe!

Hope all's fine now with little C.

hi HL!
Eye contact is most important and it's a tell-all sign that he needs medical attention if the child doesn't demonstrate any.
Sometimes kids just can't handle things that catch them by surprise, esp when they are exhausted from school - speaking from my personal experience with my children... limited and non qualified study there.

The American mommies here always remind their kids to use their big boy/girl;s voice and discourage whining.

Or it could be an age-related thingy too.

But with your patience and hugs, I think Ian will grow out of his whines sooner than you think.
happy.gif

Btw no need to feel embarassed in front of the security guards... any knowing parents know how not to judge from such a situation.
happy.gif

Thanks for the points you pple raised
happy.gif

Interestingly I had him tested for autism (on the suggestion of his Montessori teacher who complained that çognitively he was sound, but his social skills were lacking) at 3. But the diagnosis was negative, doc (specialist fr the Autism Assoc) just said he is shy and needs to develop his language skills. But no, he is not a late speaker.

There's apparently a whole spectrum of autism. My kid is likely not clinically autistic, but may be lacking in certain emotional skills, which hopefully he will improve upon to a socially acceptable degree, when he is an adult. Meanwhile, yes, mummy will be patient, without feeding his emotional neediness to much! (what can kids do without their mummies!!)

Hi k's mom, I'm on facebook but am not sure what to do with it. will look into it
happy.gif

Hi Hui Li, am glad that your investigations have turned up nothing serious. If you are still unsettled, you may want to chack out this book called the Out-of-Sync Child.
http://www.amazon.com/Out-Sync-Child-Recognizing-Processing/dp/0399531653/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1209205619&sr=8-1
It talks about kids who have sensitivities that are not medically categorizeable, but exist, like sensitivities to sound, to motion etc. There is a follow up book by the same author that helps to address some of these issues through play activities. It was really very helpful for me to understand the issues with my son and to try to work him out of it. Hope this helps!

Hi Hui Li,

I too have stories to share on sensitivity …

My son was once extremely sensitive to sounds for a brief period when he was around 3yo. Sounds that were once familiar to him became intolerable. Often than not, I would find him taking cover under the quilts. During mealtimes, any slight sound (may or may not be audible to us) would send him scampering for cover in the bedroom. He would request for music to be played along before he would resume his meals. Funny thing was such occurrences happened only at home. He claimed he kept hearing sounds. The doctor merely rubbed it off as part of the growing phase. Well, he did grow out of it eventually. The greatest thing that helped was getting him to confront his fear.

Things were pretty stable until we came back last year. He developed a new fear – related to sounds but on a different platform. Announcements made in the shopping centres would petrify him and make him lose his nerves. Especially those reminding patrons of the closing time. He will insist on leaving the place immediately, fearing that we might be locked in. If we don’t start making way for the exit, he will get fidgety and border on the verge of crying out. It’s been almost 1 year but we have yet to resolve this irrational fear. What we do is try minimising shopping till the late hours. Anyway, this isn't much of an issue since we seldom shop till that late.
happy.gif

Another boy (2003 kid) I know has this irrational fear for elevators. His face literally turned pale just standing there waiting for the lift. Once inside the lift, he kept fidgeting and asking his mom if they had reached the ground floor. This boy does have some social interaction issues though.

Hihi mummies, been really bz and no chance to login in office so mia from forum! Thks to worrymum for staying in touch and letting me know about gathering. Keen to join for the picnic but can't confirm yet. Sarah, can send me details. Thanks much much!

Hi chloe, oh dear sorry to hear about c. Yours truly had fits from fever when I was young, just that one occurence. So don't worry too much. No damage done except my dad said his thumb is injured bcoz he 'sacrificed' it incase I bit my tongue. Take care!

Hi Hui Li,

I have been a lurker for quite a while..

yes, u're not alone...my gal has some sensory issues too...hers is movement and sense of self in space...She has improved much via ocuupational therapy..

that's why she did not enjoy herself at Julia Gabriel when she was young...

The Out of Sync Child is a gd read and u should take a look at it..

my gal is also awkward in social situationa nd she had delays in speech due to past ear infections...

Hi Serenade!

Your B's fear of announcement sounds cute. Ok, don't mean to rub it off lightly. But seriously, I've not seen a child that age taken that kind of urgency to react to the store-closing announcement. Think we gotta give him some credit for that kind of maturity!
happy.gif

Speaking about announcements, B used to demonstrate panic too at the supermarket at about 30 months old. He started crying down the store and it made grocery shopping hell for us parents. Then we decided to translate and explain to him what they all meant - otherwise all in German. What a relief when he was in an English-speaking city, e.g. on London tube with "mind the gap!" and store closing hours in NY. Good excuse to make him "bow out" in peace and pack him home.

Dear all,
Thanks much for your concern & well wishes. Little C is on her way to recovery, though I'm now feeling the flu bug approachING me ahhhh....

Hi Jan,
According to the doc, should not stick finger/object into the mouth & cause unnecessary injury. The correct thing to do is place the child on his side to prevent choking of secretions. And bring the fever down after the fit has ceased.

Hi HL,
Sensitivity...hmmm C was terrified of the flushing sound of public toilets when she was ~2.5 yr old & refused to use it!!

Good! I'm not alone!

Chloe, my 4 year old is still terrified of toilet flushes, but only in dark toilets!

But he is very sociable now and makes friends easily. His sensitivity/upsets are not particular to sounds...

I feel that the test of eye contact, as mentioned by K's_mum is esp valid. The specialist I consulted also focused on that.

Also abide by the idea that patience, and not indulging, or the other extreme, scolding him for his fears, helps the child to grow out of them.

Nobody is the same. There is a fine line between what is normal and what is not. With coaching (by parents, therapists if necessary), most of these kids will grow up fine, if not become more socially adept than other kids -- or at least that is what I would like to believe!!

I myself was once shy and sensitive. I'm still sensitive, but I know that it also gives me great empathy for others, a skill that you can tap upon. After work/school experience, I also know that I can hold my own in social situations.

So always be positive for your kid, even if inwardly (or outwardly!), you are rolling your eyes... and wondering why u cannot have a so-called normal kid like everyone else ;P)

Serenade,
My son was also so terrified of the cafe we were in closing (partly our fault coz we fanned his fears to get him to eat quickly), that he threw up!

The other day (I like to tease my son, wicked mummie ;P), I told him the Thao tribe (aboriginal headhunters in Taiwan) coming closer (sound of piano playing wafting in from neighbour's hse), and he threw up supper.

Think I getting to learn my lesson... ;P

Hi K's mom,

Not that I mind the announcement fear. At least, I need not struggle when it’s time for home sweet home
happy.gif
Hey, guess what? Both our boys can help keep track of the announcements while we enjoy yakking on the MRT rides in future!

You think the announcement fear is cute? Haha, here's another “cuter” old fear. It too happened shortly after we came back. For a while, B was apprehensive about C and the lifts. He was worried that C might simply vanish into the thin air within the lift! (Don't ask me where to. Maybe the fourth dimension?) He would cling onto her hands tightly or insist we hold C's hands/carry her. Failing which would result in him being greatly distressed. It's a double whammy torture since C would insist otherwise and cry murder. Imagine the racket we had!

Hi Chloe,

My C could use some toilet flushing fear of your C! She simply loves flushing the public toilet
sad.gif

Hi Hui Li,

Looks like teasing don’t work well with our boys
sad.gif
Mine gets upset and chides me off whenever I tease him about such things… (hey, but he has no qualm teasing mommy. Unfair, isn't it?)

On the issue of sensitivity or irrational fear, we simpy view it as part and parcel of growing up. Even adults are entitled to irrational fears. For myself, I have this irrational fear for cockroaches. A cockroach within 1 metre is enough to send me screaming my head off!

But I suppose if the sensitivity is affecting the child's daily life and activities, then it's better to seek some professional opinions and help.

Hi Alcovelet, so nice to hear that you can make it for the lunch. I hv yet to confirm the timing with the rest who are going (i.e Me, Pris and Worry_mum). Tell you later ok.

Hi Chloe, good to hear that little C on road to recovery. You certainly need to take care too. We'll catch up on May 1st since you cant make it on 17th.

*sigh* took so long to come into this forum, cos really tired. Imagine i doze off last night (erm actually yesterday morning 1am) while I am deleting my email. If I did not wake up earlier, my whole mailbox will be gone (cos I doze off with finger still pressing on delete button!)

Hi Sherlyn, Hi Worry_mum

Sorry ... I'm really busy with work and trying to give priorities to the kids when I have time, so no time to answer the qn on the bowling place.

The bowling place is Westwood Bowl (91 BB St Av 2, CSC) http://www.csc.gov.sg/html/bukitbatok/bb_bowling.html

Per game : $1.50 (Mon-Fri : 10am to 2pm), other timings : $3 to $3.60

On 1 May, I've other prior arrangements, but if I can, I'll pop by ...

Hello mummies,
Sorry to interrupt. I have 2 boys of preschool age and want to send them to school. May I find out from you what are the important factors that you all consider when choosing a preschool?

Hi all,
The thread has become SOOO quiet all of a sudden huh? Where's everybody???
happy.gif

Hey, which part of Botanical Gardens are we meeting on Thu? Jacob Ballas? Cannot bring food inside right? I overhead a security guard telling someone the last time I was there.

have been doing my maths ... still find it's more affordable to get my books from Amazon rather than locally. Anyone want to order anything from Amazon? Serenade? U know what I'm getting lah ... the "expensive books" as quoted by home library ...

.ky.

Hi mummies,

I've been busy with work and nursing a throat infection after my overseas trip. The only comforting is that I was unable to grab some OshKosh Tees at $15/pc for Z and some for nephew. A pair of Lee jeans for HB at $20/pc. A pair of Jag jeans for myself at $20+. Clothing at Php is really much lower as compared in SGP. I should offer someone to lodge with me for free.

Regarding sensitivity
Z has phobia of entering a room/toilet unlit. I am unable to detect anything else cos he is usually happy go lucky most of times.

May1 outing @ Botanic Gdn
I would love to bring Z there. But we are nursing our cough.. See how we are by tomor.

Hi Chihuahua,
For preschool, I would go for a loving, familial environment coz young kids need to bond with the teacher to learn anything at all. Anyone else wants to share their 2 cents'worth?
happy.gif

Hi Ky,
I order books fr Amazon fr time to time too, except now the address will be different, so cannot band wif you this time... Notice u said u ve been busy lately... have yet to receive the link to your blog, send me when free ok?
happy.gif
Windows Live!, Skype, Yahoo! Mssgr, Face Book (and Visa) also accepted ;P

Hi Mommies,

Date: Thursday, May 1
Time: 9am
Venue: picnic @ botanic gardens

Meeting place - symphony stage, swan lake or...? According to Serenade, there's a climbing tree site which is near to Gleneagles. Any preference?

Sarah and all, we will not be joining all of you on May 1. We are having some family gathering.

Hui Li, that's one of the site that I visit to check the milestones of children.

I still find that books are cheaper in Vancouver and there is always book sale almost every quarter which we will get a whole lot.

Thanks ky. No problem, understand. Anyway priorty should always give to kids.

CSC club, non members also can go in? cant wait to check it out.

thks
sherlyn

Hi mommies,
It is great seeing you gals and your kids this morning. Too bad the gathering has to break up early due to the scorching heat!

Hi Jpooh,
How's R? Hope it's nothing serious. R has certainly grown a lot. She looks more mature and taller now!

Hi serena,
How nice of you to prepare cookies for the kids! Bel must have lent you a helping hand too. Thanks, gals!

Hi chloe,
Glad to see the younger C walking and running around happily! The older C is still as cheerful and sociable as ever ;)

Hi apricot,
A is such a good boy today! Saw him enjoying a book while the rest were nowhere to be seen. Great job!

Hi sarah,
H left me with a difficult task
sad.gif
I have to "practise" paper, scissors, stone with B now...

Hi moshimoshi,
Smart of M to stay under shade. Both kids of mine were drenched in their perspiration!

Hi sheryln,
My hubby was just complimenting JA on his soccer skills. That boy really knows his kicks!
Both your kids are so generous, sharing food with everybody. Thanks for the snacks!

Hi mommies,

I also had a great time seeing you all thou didn't spent alot of time talking (cos heat affected my mood). Maybe next time we can try gathering at Labrador park, West Coast park, or East Coast Park where there is sea breeze? keke. Cant wait for the next one now.

Thanks Serenade, JA soccer skills good ah? hehe, maybe he watch soccer together with dh at times, so pick that up ... but we only had ball kicking session once at west coast park. Don't mention with regards to the snacks. I just hope to make everyone happy and let my kids know the other kids (*sigh* but they still don't remember who is who!)

Hi Mommies,
Yup, great to see one another again. And we thought meeting early can avoid the sun.
happy.gif

And yes, Sherlyn, another gathering in the pipeline. Noticed there are a few May babies -Chloe, Moo, Moshi and Serenade. These are the few that I know, apologies if I leave anyone out. Thought it will be nice to meet for dinner. Anyone keen? Suggested date as follow:

Date: Friday, 16 May
Time: 6/7pm?
Venue: To be decided

Hi All,

We got back from our holiday in Laos yesterday. Fabulous! Sad to have missed the picnic yesterday, but I guess I don't miss the hot sun!!!

Hi Helen, received your blog invite tks! The poor cutie. But so good to hear she's back on her feet :)

Hi Sarah, dinner sounds good. Let's figure out a fun place to go. Count me in!

Gotta run to stick the clothes in the washer before we head out.

Ciao for now!

Hi Mommies,
Nice seeing you all again! The sun is really scorching hot, next time meet indoor okie.

Hi Jpooh,
Hope R is feeling better! I happened to see her merlioned while eating my breakfast, oops! Luckily my big packet of wet wipes came in handy
happy.gif

Hi Apricot,
Thanks for lugging the books. We read Probably Pistacho's & Spunky Monkey yesterday & had a good laugh. Glad C likes it, didnt waste moi $$$

Hi Serena,
Thanks again for the cookies. It's gone by afternoon!

Hi Serenade,
I asked C who she likes to play with, well I think you know what her answer was. Anyway, I repeated that it was wrong to pull B's hair etc (don't know how she got the idea it's funny) and she was quiet & in deep thoughts throughout the journey back. I believed she was repentent. Hope B was not traumatised.

Hi Sarah,
Dh was saying H has grown up quite a bit since we last saw her. She must be eating pretty well!

Hi Sherlyn,
I was observing YX's face when you tried to introduce the children to her. Boy, was she puzzled! But I'm sure she'll remember in time to come.

Hi Moshi,
Think we are both not sun lovers. Sunglasses, help protect my eyes from ageing!

Hey mummies, no problem for the cookies but I didn't made alot so if I miss out anyone, apologies will make it up the next round. I started baking the cookies and cake on Wed night after work. That was already 7pm!! I didn't stop till midnight. So, the next morning I was really tired and the hot sun didn't help.

Serenade, agree with everyone. Esp C so rosy, so cute... my colleagues who saw the photos thought your kids were Japanese. Any Japanese blood? Relatives mayb or cousins or grandparents??

Jpooh, it was good to see you again. Ya, poor R. Hope she's better.

Apricot, Aston what can I say. He's reading under the shade with his daddy! Wow!!

Moshi, Mel is so cute. Don't want to go rain forest because it's raining!!

Sherlyn, now you know why I can't any clothes for your girl. Ha.. my mom will think you're a great mom.

Sarah, I agree with Chloe's mom, H is eating well. You must cook very well. How do you induce her to eat?? Share please. Look at Bel, she's so skinny!! Bel can only remember chloe, Hannah, Melody, Aston, Brandon and Sherlyn's girl. She calls her mei mei. She did ask who's aunty Lena. I said "Oh! That's the jie jie besides Melody"

Chloe, C is so cute!! Oh didn't know your dh so "in".
