(2003) Calling all 2003 babies

Road safety park, saw it at ECP and was also wondering if they have anything for the v young. i think the pri sch kids still go there.

yeah, sherlyn, i am all excited abt the impending yr-end hols. with so much time to kill, we have to plan lotsa fun for the kids ok!

a few things on my mind already, dentist and eye test, swimming, botanic gardens...
hey, kelong's cool, anyone has a yacht to take us? mozzies can be a problem though, esp night time.

maybe we can plan a sentosa trip? picnic by the beach or throw in a one night stay?
can't wait for the IRs and universal studio!by 2010, our kids would be ready for more rides at universal, how timely, yipee

hey serena
orange sponge cake looks good, you can adorn it with little mandarins and it makes a great gift for CNY!

apricot, i only have a few workbooks, what's kumon maze? note that most kumon things sold here are the american/canada version, materials used in the kumon classrooms are not on sale to the public.

hi k's mom
saw the Kuidarore blog, what does the name mean?
i love the butterflyaways and cookie favors, can u hone your skills on those? i want them for mel's bday next yr!!! i will pay u market rate la heehee
how abt macarons? they are yummy too! can those be decorated?

hi apricot
oh yes, the rhymes one, $10.50 i think. it's good, esp the boxes for writing the words, the size is right and it's designed such that it gives the child a better idea on how each letter is shaped. fits mel's needs;)

Hi mommies,
Help!! Having 'ants' war at home now. The ants are very fine, not the normal ones you see. Think I have tried almost everything - ants bait, powder, insecticide, pandan leaves, moth balls, nothing seems to work. Any idea/suggestions?

sarah dear
it's the ants season. maybe we should fry some to use as ikan bilis keke
those in my home are red ones and big! wana swap?

Hi Sherlyn,
Yes, you have to separate egg white and yolk. I was once told that you have to be very patient when baking chiffon becoz it can take up to 2hours, from preparing to baking to waiting. HTH.

Hey, Serena, I kaypoh on your behalf..
embarrassed.gif

Moshi,
Are you kidding me? Ants season? Then how?? I can tolerate if they hang around in the kitchen, but they are coming into H's bedroom. Arrgh..I have sleepless nights becoz of them.

abt the penpals and exchanging of addresses, perhaps we can start off by sending each other self made xmas cards? then CNY cards and bday cards. what else? get-well cards, congratulations cards, april-fool cards??

my ants go everywhere too, we 'see one kill one' haha just how many can we kill? once we destroyed the nest but problem was only temporarily solved. anyway, we get bitten at night, wake up the next day, curse a bit, apply cream and the cycle begins keke

Hi moshi, I'm going to have a weekend getaway at sentosa next weekend. nah, don't think naughty. It's 2 families with kids in tow at the siloso beach resort. We spent a day at the beach previously and wanted to do more so decided on an overnite stay.

hi sarah!

actually, wasn't planning on posting, but see damsel in distress here!
happy.gif

Hmmm... trace the source and squirt food vinegar at the source? My brother swears by it.

HI moshi!

Kuidaore is a Jap expression. Maybe Meilan can help out here.

What I can find on wikipedia is:
Kuidaore (H|, Kuidaore?) is a Japanese word meaning roughly gto ruin oneself by extravagance in food.h It is sometimes romanized as cuidaore, and is part of a larger proverb: "Dress (in kimonos) till you drop in Kyoto, eat till you drop in Osaka" (̒|A̐H|).

Yep, I was like you too. Curious about the strange name and surfed around little bit.

Haha... ants season?!
I hate ants. I was got bitten when I was little and always got bubbles and pus from the bites. Yikes.

Penpal things sound nice. Maybe I should start the ball rolling by getting B to do a card for Halloween.

And nope. I can't bake like Jocelyn Shu. Please place your orders with Cupcake Momma. My bakes look really homely compared with theirs.

HI Sherlyn!

SInking could mean your baking time is not right, or oven temp is not right - think this is whatever little I can remember from my home ec class in sec sch days.

And beating eggs - separate or otherwise - always make sure your whisks are free from any water droplets. My hubby always reminds me to keep all ingredients free from water. Not even a single drop. Please check there esp when you have to wash your whisks and then beat the next bowl.

Chiffon cake is really really tricky. Maybe Serena knows the trick there.

hi mommies!

I've got so many halls of publishers to comb come this weekend and i can only plan to go down to the bookfair on on day, eiher sat or sun.

So tell me what sort of publishers are worth covering... any suggestions.

Children books and glossy recipe books...

I've gotta do my homework before going to the bookfair. I think I shall go for the those from the States, Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain since we don't always find books from them in Sg. Of course, there are also really good ones from India and Hong Kong.

HI moshi!

Yep, hubby showed me some slides from STB recently. Was so wowed by all the great projects in the new city centre in Sg, making me feel all excited going back to a great city!

F1 is gonna start racing soon, Oct 2008! Woohoo!

hi jan
yeh, thought weekend rendevous for a moment heehee. where are u staying? i know rasa sentosa is convenient with the beach just outside the hotel but it's ridiculously expensive;)
i alwaays think sentosa has the cleanest beach in Sg, sand softer also.
let us know how it went and the changes going on there
happy.gif

mommies who bake, be it chiffon, cookie, cupcake or brownies, u have a ready pool of customers here. i am first in the list;)

hi k's mom
when ya' returning next yr? CNY?

book fair, no need to choose publishers la, see anyone u think is good, just grab!

Hi moshi, Rasa sentosa is ex$$ rooms from $335. Staying at Siloso beach resort at $250. Of course the sand is nicer - it's imported...hahaa!

Hi Kristin's mom,
I gonna buy a bottle of vinegar later!!
I followed the trail, kill it, and another trail comes along.
kao_cry.gif

Hi moshi!

I need to scope down... coz my legs can't carry me everywhere. Even if they could, there wouldn't be enough time in one day.

There are like 8 huge exhibition halls... some halls even have two levels... really can get suffocated in this huge mass of books!

Hi Chloe2003,
B is with Berries now too. We went for the $15 trial and enrolled him immediately after the trial. How to say no to an enthusiastic kid?
wink.gif
. And yes, we are withdrawing him from JG after this term. Do we need to inform them in person or will it do via phone?

Which Berries is Chloe going for the trial? B is at the Bukit Batok Branch. 4ChongChong and Jazreel's girls are there too. Between Berries and JG, I feel Berries teaches more stuff and B seems to prefer Berries more.

Hi Sarah,
Take the opportunity and get H to observe the ants before the wipeout. Whenever we find ants at home, the kids will go "wild" and call for "drastic actions", arghhh... Can hardly get them to observe them quietly.

Hi Kristin's mom,
Why not take a special day off from "SAHM"? Get your hubby to entertain the kids while you spend one day on your own at the exhibition halls? Great therapy!

Hey moshimoshi,
Staying at Sentosa is a great idea! In fact, we are already planning for a stay over at Sentosa too. If mommies are interested, let's plan and book the rooms earlier.
happy.gif

Hi Jan,
We had an overnight stay in Sentosa ages ago. No couple time too cos we had a super bright light bulb (my cousing) with us :p. I would imagine an overnight stay will be fun with the kids. Enjoy yourself!

Hi Kristin's mom,
I like books and can go "xiao" if I am u there to see huge mass of books. Books theraphy or book craze, you call it !
Charlton is fine now, eating soy milk for time being for one mth and take med for another 1-2 weeks. Feel so secured to have Dr Toh attend to him.

Been mia for a long time. Very busy and also lots of packing and stuffs, we are heading back in January not sure whether for good or not, since Dh will be going to two interviews in UK.

But will definitely be back in Singapore for a break.

K's mum, your cupcakes looked yummy.

Currently I am also sourcing for a good kindergarten, have looked up a couple, wanted those that have enrichment classes after school for Kai during our stay in Singapore if we are heading off away.

Hi Priscilla,
Did you try Pat school house ? It has this program in their school or they also run it by itself, called Fast Track kids. Unsure if this is enrichment class.

Hi Serenade!

I thought about it too that I should go on my own. But I need my dh's strong arms to carry back all the books or the kids' buggy to transport the books within the trade fair centre itself. Imagine the halls are no longer just connected by travellators and footpath, but also by shuttle buses! It's really huge. I think all the mommies here will go ga-ga seeing so many books on display. Besides, I think dh wants to visit the book fair and look see himself.

I've read pretty good ratings on Berries too. Really gotta get B and K signed up for all Chinese enrichment classes when they are back in Sg for good. We are still doing zero here for Chinese. WHat's more, a good Taiwanese friend with kids their age is leaving at the end of this month. The whole family will be posted to HK for work. Sigh! Again, minimal speaking Mandarin opportunities.

Hi Apricot!

So twin 1 cannot take mommy's milk now? Oh...
Yes, trust Dr Toh, she's great with babies and kids. Strangely, they never cry when they see her.

Hehee... you should buy an airticket and come over to the book fair here. you will turn hysterical, i promise! But some individual copies might not be for sale though...
sad.gif

Hi Kristin's mom,
Dun tempt me..cos if I really fly over I can stay at my cousin's place. Pls take some pics show me this HUGE BOOK FAIR that you are going.

Hi! Sherlyn I beat yolks and whites separately. Your recipe sounds like for "ji dao gao" In English, they probably just rename it as sponge cake?! Were they very dense? Crystaljade are selling them as "ji dao gao" Don't despair because I threw mine away a few times before I succeeded. So just go thru the steps again and slowly filter out and see what you are left with.

Worst come to worst, just buy ready make sponge cake mix and bake. Will not go wrong for sure.

Moshi, it's a great idea on the X-mas card. Let's all do that for Christmas! Maybe I should send postcards from Japan? Mummies, email me your home address. Quick, quick, quake, quake..oops still can't get over Duck Tour.

Apricot, I heard of this FasTrack Kids. Think it's a computer software that teaches children on various subjects. Personally I don't believe in it though. Too much computer will only affect their vision.

Jan, Rasa Sentosa is so ex!!! I rather asked my husband to park his boat near Sentosa and we spend the night in the boat. We will just pretend we are in suite. Ha...

Sarah, ants will always be a problem in a high humidity country like S'pore. It goes away today but will come again tomorrow. Do you believe me if I tell you I follow the ants trail and it led me to my next door neighbour's house? The ants were visiting!!

Hi Worry mum,

Is it me who mentioned it b4 ? This thing has been in my mind cos i know a mother organised one for her playgroup. Too bad I do not hv her contact now but i think will not be too difficult to call the Road Safety thing up. Will find out more and post here.

hi moshi,

that friend who organised before also did it for a bunch of kids ard ours age. Her son is also a 4 yr old boy.

hmm lotsa of fun for the kids .. so we better start the ball rolling
happy.gif
deepavali want to celebrate or not hehe.

the botanic garden new changes u mentioned, one mum posted that it is very crowded now, maybe new.

sentosa sounds nice. The other time we wanted a nite over there, but after checking out the prices, we find that it is not worthwhile, so we went kuantan. Now u guys are making me itchy again haha.

Sarah, my house has also been invaded by ants since months ago. There are several contributing factors - kids dropping food on the floor, plants, migration from outside and lately, my helper found EGGS on my bamboo blinds!!! Luckily I have her now else I would really freak out. But she has been so frenzied in killing ants (even isolated ones) that I'm getting a little concerned as JK and JC have started to imitate her action in pressing ants.

My share of ants ... i had ants nests all over my hse. One in the toilet, one in one of the legs of a wooden table, one in the "structure" holding my sliding door to the kitchen, one somewhere along the wall of my kitchen cabinet.

Tried ant baits, helped awhile but they came back. I hv alot of boxes that store food on my dining table, else my food wrapped in plastic bag will be infested (can use this way?) by ants the next morning.

The penpal idea is really great. I get a chance to make the kids do craft for some purpose. But as more gatherings come by, we will definitely see each other, so it means the penpals will soon see each other?

I think my kids will be thrilled to recv stuff in the mailbox.

Sarah,

Just strike me. Will surphur work? Maybe along the window pane and along the bedroom door on the floor ? I also read that if the food is secured by a ring of dish liquid detergent, the ants wun go near too. I have not tried that before.

hi apricot!

Was surfing around and checked out your blog. wow... looks like you've been working hard there!
Really nice to see all the posts, esp the one on A growing up.

How did you manage to get so many shots with your son?
I don't think I've so many pics with B or with K. I really got to do something there.

Also the post on his name - thought your idea of posting what has his name was pretty cool.

hi Kristin's mom ... baking time and temperature .. noted. *sigh* will just keep trying bah. It rises nicely in the oven thou.

How nice, your dh can bake. ya will clean the whisk of water. I know beating egg white need spotless whisk and bowl, but i have not tried beating the eggs separately. Don't hv the luxury since the kids only nap 1.5 hrs.

Hi K's mom,

the book fair sounds exciting. Shuttle buses somemore .. wish i could be there. I guess you must hv lots of storage space at home.
happy.gif

Serena .. u wun believe, even with PH sponge cake mix, the sponge cake also come out sunken. Maybe K's mom is correct, might be the temperature or baking time .. maybe i just blame it on the oven. hahaha

anyway, i think i cant tell what is the taste and texture of a chiffon cake, or a sponge cake, or a butter cake. If you still hv a pc if the orange chiffon cake left, do let me try on sat
happy.gif

hi sher!

my dh has hung up his baking apron for a really long time now... but when he bakes i will have to clean up. The kitchen won't be a very pretty sight.

easch oven works differently, depending on how well insulated it is. So sometimes, the temp and time given in recipe book might have to be amended.

i remember my home ec exam. My neighbour took out her sponge cake too early, and then it sunk right in after the cake cooled down. She didn't do well for her exam and that incident always reminded me to respect baking time and not just by looking through the oven window. Always test your cake with a prick. And don't keep opening the oven door to check. That again will affect oven temp.
Also don't forget to preheat your oven, sweetie!

whites and yolks separate - errm, it's best you consult your recipe on that. but sponge cake, i think whites should be beaten separately, isn't it? yes, and not a single drop of water, very definitely.

That reminded me of my failed attempt on making tiramisu to surprise my dh. By the time he came home, he was surprised to see me still frantically beating egg whites that never foamed! By which time, I think I had used up all the eggs in the house! See... me and baking, hard to believe, right?! Then he told me with a grin, "Ah, you've got water in there!"

Hi Kristin's mom,
Just showed B your cupcakes and he can't wait to try baking them himself :p

How do you find the cupcake book? Did a surf on Amazon, there are a couple more on cupcakes. What makes you decide on that book?

Ok, going to get some baking accessories this Sat if B recovers in time
happy.gif
He's down with fever.
