What was your baby's fetal heartbeat at 12 weeks?

Hi ladies,

Mine is a girl and it's been higher than the norm. It was 192 at week 9 and now, at 12 weeks, it is about 180. I have done my Harmony and nuchal scan tests and I'm low-risk for the three Trisomy conditions that these test for (cos i googled and read that a high heart beat rate can indicate one of these conditions but not sure at what stage of the pregnancy is a high heart beat rate considered risky). My gynae isn't worried about it and said that he's seen 200s before. As i've been on modified bed rest since I got pregnant and have hardly moved much, I'm wondering if my baby (and I) have an increased heart rate each time we visit the clinic once a week cos it's like we suddenly have to walk a bit? Would be nice to know what your baby's heartbeat rate was like at 11-12 weeks. :) Thank you for sharing!

Hi I would like to check if you happen to know a fetal's heartbeats at 6-weeks is considered normal if they are very slow ???

Hi Poshberries, I'm not a doc but I do read up quite a bit on everything about pregnancy etc. What is your baby's heartbeat at six weeks? I'm sure your doc will let you know if it's too slow. Cos I think at week six to week seven, they can't even detect the heartbeat yet for most ppl. In fact, they only care about seeing a tiny flickering on the screen which indicates a heartbeat. Think the docs only start watching the heartbeat rate from week nine, from my experience. And the range can be very wide, anything from 120 to 200. Good luck!

Hi LadyP, gynae didn't reveal the heartbeart rate for me but he just said why the rate was so slow ??? And he had a lot of difficulty picking up the super faint heartbeats from his machine. He tried many ways and several times before finally detecting the tiny beats. Then after the scan, he gave me a Pregnyl injection which should help to improve the condition ?? My next visit will be next week, by then my little one should be around week 7 or 8. Hopefully this time round like you've said should be able to pick up better or faster heartbeats.

But I must admit I was and didn't take any folic acid before I was trying to conceive as I thought of giving up trying. When I realised I missed my period for 1.5 mths. I then start to test myself with the pregnancy test kit and found out by luck I was finally pregnant at home and the embryo is about 6 weeks during the scan when I met my gynae last week. I was thinking myself isit because I didn't consume folic acid all the while, that's why my embryo is not growing well or functioning good enough to be producing faster heartbeats than women who have been taking folic acid all the while ????? I am upset and worried now.

Wow! Your gynae is so good at picking heartbeats of you little one at week 6 ???? Mine was almost hard to detect until I almost cry as I was really scared.
She didn't do so by just abdominal scan, she did it via vaginal scan cos it's so tiny and she needed to press hard just to find the embryo. Hence she did the vaginal scan and we got the heart beat.

But yes, she is good :)

Folic is more for neural related issue, not really heart. Don't worry, the fetus heartbeat should be more obvious she he/she grows ;)

if a scan is done thru vaginally, it will be easier to detect and hear the heartbeat at 6 weeks. mine 6 weeks was 15x. 12 weeks was 14x. so far, always keeping around 14x.

Hi Karmaplaysitall, oooh no wonder that day gynae got asked me why I didn't drink enough water for the ultrasound scan so my gynae got suggest if I should go by vagina scan which I declined this option. Maybe through this option, my gynae would have detect the heartbeats better and easier??

Hi posh berries, usually we do vaginal scan until week 10 when we switch to abdominal. :) no wonder the gynae couldn't hear anything much yet. But your gynae should have known this and he shouldn't have scared you unnecessarily! :( sorry I really hate it when medical professionals are not professional cos I have had my own bad experiences. Good luck! When's your next scan?

Don't worry. Folic acid doesn't have anything to do with the heart. And if you think about it, previous generations of women never got to take all these prenatal supplements and our parents etc were fine. :) You can always start taking now. I m sure many women who weren't trying to conceive didn't take folic acid too until they became pregnant. Please don't blame yourself.

Hi LadyP, my next appt in next week. So you meant normally for a 6-weeks scan, its usually through vagina scan instead of ultrasound scan??? But I heard my gynae is very experienced. You made me feel slightly more assured. Do hope you understand as this is my 1st pregnancy and I don't know anything about it. Lolz.

Hi LadyP, thank for your prompt replies and assistance. You're very nice!! I appreciate it. Yah actually I was telling hubby I felt ssoooo guilty like as if I am hurting my little one for taking folic acid daily before I want to conceive. And suddenly I got pregnant, I felt like letting down my embryo for giving him/her proper nutrients to nurture and grow into a healthy bb.

Hi posh berries, no problem! Yeah at week 10, they may even say let's try n see if can scan from tummy, if not, continue with vaginally. Why is your gynae not giving you a transvaginal scan? Is it because you were afraid of the discomfort? If you are (and I hate vaginal scans), this nurse taught me to cough and your gynae can help by inserting the probe slowly. But a gd gynae won't hurt you. :) At week six, even with transvaginal, I can't see much. My gynae said can see something flickering means there is a heartbeat. :) keep us updated!

Hi posh berries you r welcome. I m not a doc lah so I m just speaking from my own experiences. :) is your gynae giving you folic acid already? Mine is vvv kiasu n piled me with prenatal and folic acid etc from week five. FYI, gynaes' folic acid will be more powerful than what you get outside (I took GNC house brand before I tried to conceive but that's only cos I have had losses before and I m older so I had to be more vigilant).

It's still ultrasound scan but done through vagina.

Just an update in case anyone had the same question that I posted. I just had my scan just now and at 13 weeks plus, my baby's heartbeat has gone from 180 to 153. :) so heartbeats do change at this stage of pregnancy.

She is patient and pleasant. Her consultation is $88 and ultrasound is $88, extra $20 surcharge on Saturday consultation. Her fees for normal deliver is $2688 to $3288, C-section is a couple hundred more and if emergency C-section is another $1000 to $1200 more there about. Ward visit is $300 to $400 per visit. All these are on top of hospital charges.

Hi LadyP!

Yes, the fetal heartrate does eventually slow down to a steady state as pregnancy progresses. I had the same experience as you and my baby's was 189BPM at Week 8 or 10 and I was a little bit worried haha (cos I am kanchiong and have slightly high BP myself). Currently, I am at Week 19 and the little one's heartbeat is around 150BPM =)

Hi all, saw this earlier post. Just had a u/s today and the babies fetal heart rate is 87bpm. Baby is 6 weeks 3 days old. Doc says is too slow. Very worried if it will turn out to be a M/c . Any advise or similar experience?
