Running Through Pregnancy

Calling all runner mums! I’d love to hear about your experiences balancing running and pregnancy.

A bit about me: I’ve been a dedicated runner for over 9 years, averaging >60km/week, running 2 full marathons a year, plus other races in Singapore and abroad. (Yes, I travel to race world events!) Running is a huge part of my life—it keeps me mentally and physically strong, and I love the community. I also dedicate time to strength training at the gym 2x a week. I know my activity level is probably on the 10th percentile, so I’d really appreciate insights from fellow endurance mums who’ve navigated this!

My questions:

  1. Did you find a supportive gynae?
    • Were they comfortable with you continuing to run (with evidence-based activity modifications as needed), or did they advise stopping?
    • Running is my mental health lifeline, so finding a gynae who a. respects and understands the athletic lifestyle, b. is proactive about pelvic floor health would mean the world.
  2. If you had to stop or reduce running, at what point did that happen?
    • Was it due to medical advice, discomfort, or other factors?
  3. Postpartum recovery & return to running?
    • How was your healing process?
    • How long did it take to return to regular running or scale up for a race? Can you share more about your experience returning to activity and how you restarted training?
    • (Note: I’m privileged to have help at home, so I’d love to hear how that impacted your recovery.)
I’ve searched threads and Googled, but info seems limited for higher-mileage runners. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences!
