10 Great Programmes Kids will Love at SWF Playground This Year! (2024)

If you have a budding poet, author, writer, word wonder at home, keep 8 to 17 November 2023 free for them to indulge at the Singapore Writers Festival SWF Playground. This is where they can meet authors and hone their craft, take part in interactive storytelling sessions, and more. Themed ‘In Our Nature’, this year’s SWF invites us to reflect on what is truly in our nature — as humans, as writers and readers, as global citizens — navigating the world we live in today. Even if your child isn’t an alphabet amazon or a letter lover, an encounter here could just inspire them on their way to becoming one! From storytelling sessions to hands-on crafting workshops and meet-and-greets with iconic storybook characters, here are some programmes you won’t want your little ones to miss out on this SWF.

The Mysterious Button

With a click of the button, be prepared to end up in a strange place and meet some unexpected furry friends. Learn about environmental pollution and the importance of protecting our Earth. Come with a T-shirt that has been lying unworn in your wardrobe and turn it into a personalised tote bag to bring home.

Ideas are Everywhere: Write and Draw with Gabrielle Wang

Create your own picture book with Australian Children’s Laureate (2022–2023), Gabrielle Wang. Participants will create their own picture book through a series of fun writing and drawing exercises.

The Family’s Secret Recipe — Nasi Ulam

What is your family’s favourite dish? In this storytelling session, discover a family’s secret recipe for the Malay dish nasi ulam, and use your imagination to create the best one!

All the way from Topazia, Geronimo and Thea Stilton are heading to Singapore for a special visit! Join Geronimo as he shares tales from his book A Thousand Wonders, where he explores Italy’s rich artistic and cultural heritage. After the storytelling, the first 200 ticket holders to queue up will be able to meet-and-greet with both Geronimo and Thea for an autograph and photo!

Toddle off with Brocolily (ages 18 months to 4 years) & An Adventure with Brocolily (ages 5 to 8)

Pack your bags and go on an adventure with Brocolily! You’ll be able to master nursery rhymes and meet some adorable animals along the way. Get ready to sing, move and have a whale of a time!

Grandpa Yeh’s Teochew Png Kueh Soiree

In this storytelling session, hear author Eva Wong Nava tell of how Teochew pioneer Grandpa Yeh, who came to Singapore at the turn of the 20th century and found happiness and success through hard work and a little traditional snack called png kueh or rice cake. You’ll get to snack on png kueh, learn some Teochew words, and take a pop quiz as well

Midnight Treasure: A Talk with Piers Torday

Budding travel writers, learn how to spice up your own travel stories with children’s author Piers Torday as he shares about his latest book, Midnight Treasure, which is inspired by a map of a mysterious fantasyland hand-drawn by his dad, Paul Torday (who is also an author!).

The Giving Tree

Revisit this children’s classic by Shel Silverstein — with a twist! In this storytelling session with backtogroundzero, children get the chance to take on the roles of both the Boy and the Tree, discuss gratitude, and participate in discussions on the book. You will also take home your very own hand-made gratitude trees!
