According to CNN, federal health authorities are recommending that doctors suspend using Rotarix, one of the two vaccines used to vaccinate against rotavirus. The vaccine may be contaminated with material from a pig virus.
The Food and Drug Administration says, "There is no evidence at this time that this material poses a safety risk." The virus from pigs is not known to cause disease in humans or animals. Officials however, are being cautious.
About 1 million children in the United States and about 30 million worldwide have gotten Rotarix vaccine, the FDA said. In addition, before the vaccine, Rotavirus caused 50,000 hospitalizations and several dozen deaths per year in the United States.
The vaccine's creator stated, "GSK is committed to patient safety and to the highest manufacturing standards for all our vaccines and medicines. We are already working closely and discussing this finding with regulatory agencies around the world."
The drug agency is not pulling the vaccine from the market. They are suspending its use while they collect more information.
