LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort Theme Park: Exhilarating Thrills + Giveaway! (review)

Earlier in July, we headed across the Causeway for a weekend of family fun at LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort. We spent our first day at the annual Splash Carnival at LEGOLAND Water Park, where our family of three had a blast, and popped over to LEGOLAND Theme Park the next day.

Getting to LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort

Getting to LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort is easy and fuss-free, even for families with young children. Located at Iskandar Puteri in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, the resort is easily accessible by car or taxi via the Tuas Second Link (which is closer to LEGOLAND) or the Woodlands Causeway, or via one of the cross-border bus services (Causeway Link, SBS Transit, and so on) located at a number of pick-up points throughout Singapore.

Alternatively, you can travel into Johor Bahru by train and take a 20-minute Grab ride from one of the shopping malls opposite the CIQ Complex to the resort.

Over 40 Engaging and Fun Rides, Shows and Attractions

LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort is Asia’s first LEGOLAND, built with families with young children between the ages of two and 12 years old in mind. The multicoloured LEGO-inspired park is especially perfect for younger children as many of the rides in the park have a minimum height requirement of just 80cm.

While the park has a whole area dedicated to little ones, that’s not the only space where younger children can play. All the other seven themed areas within the park are also equipped with an activity or two that little ones can enjoy while their older siblings embark on more thrilling rides and attractions.

A favourite with my soon-to-be-six-year-old was the Technic® Twister, which is the park’s version of the classic spinning teacup ride. He had plenty of fun controlling the speed of the spin, and asked to go on it several times. Merlin’s Challenge was another spinning ride that my boy enjoyed, and needless to say, we went on that several times as well.

Roller Coaster Thrills

My son also loved the roller coaster rides. He is a little thrill seeker who absolutely loves the twists and turns of these rides. But little did he know that he was about to have the ride of his life!

There was a short drizzle that day, and when it stopped, we decided to go on the Dragon’s Apprentice, a roller coaster ride. To our surprise, it started to drizzle again and then pour in a matter of seconds, just as we were buckled into our seats.

The ride still went on — in the rain! It was definitely an experience for all of us, but I’m sure we would probably not choose to go on another roller coaster ride in the rain.

Thankfully, the weather improved shortly and we went on The Dragon, another roller coaster ride. This is similar to The Dragon’s Apprentice, but The Dragon is built for children who prefer a more exhilarating set of twists and turns. It turned out to be one of our favourite rides, and we went back on it as many times as we could before the park closed.

Fun on Themed Rides

LEGO® NINJAGO® The Ride was another favourite. On this 4D ride we were transported to a parallel NINJAGO® universe. Here we joined forces with the NINJAGO® heroes in their journey to defeat the Great Devourer by controlling the elements of fire, earth, lightning, and ice with our hands. It was extremely fun for all of us, and we loved it so much that we lost count of the number of times we went back to ride it!

There were many other rides and attractions that we loved at the theme park. One was Rescue Academy, where we had to race other families to power a LEGO® fire engine and save a burning building. Then there was the Kids Power Tower, where my husband and I took turns to pull ourselves and our boy up the tower for an amazing view of the resort before slowly descending back to the bottom. Each themed area also had its own outdoor playground in addition to the rides and attractions. We didn’t get to fully enjoy these as we were too busy going on rides!

My boy also spent some time at the DUPLO® Playtown, an interactive play village with slides and play structures suitable for younger children, and The Freshmen’s Hideout, a more challenging playground with taller structures and steeper slides to cater to older children. He thoroughly enjoyed himself at both play areas.

Dining Options and Family Friendly Facilities

With a restaurant and food kiosks at each themed area, it’s easy to fuel up no matter which part of LEGOLND theme park you are at.

We had lunch at the Market Restaurant which offers a wide selection of Asian and Western favourites. My boy chose the kid’s meal option with nuggets and fries, while my husband and I went for an Asian option with chicken and rice. The portions were generous and tasted as good as they looked.

Other cuisines available in the theme park include pizzas, Asian-style culinary delights such as nasi lemak and laksa, sandwiches and pastries, burgers and fries, and grilled dishes like steaks and sausages. We would have loved to try another restaurant, but we were too full from lunch, and preferred to spend our time trying out as many rides as we could.

When we got peckish, we simply headed for the food kiosks that dotted each of the eight themed areas. These made it easy for us to pick up snacks like popcorn and ice-cold drinks throughout the day to help combat the humidity and replenish our energy.

Shopping at LEGOLAND Theme Park

No trip to a theme park is complete without shopping for souvenirs, right? At the LEGOLAND Theme Park we were spoiled for choice with a variety of shops where we could buy exclusive park merchandise and LEGO sets. We made our way to the largest shop located at the front of the park, The Big Shop, where we spotted sweatshirts, mugs and stationery, as well as a wide variety of LEGO sets that would make great gifts for the little ones or family back home.
