Spot the Buck Moon

Look at the stars, look how they shine for you. Then look further and see if you can spot the first supermoon of 2023, the Buck Moon, which will be visible from 9pm tonight, 3 July 2023. Here are some facts about the phenomenon as told to us by the Science Centre Observatory:

  • The Buck Moon is named after the antlers of male deer (bucks), which come to their full growth at this time.
  • This supermoon occurs when the moon’s orbit is closest to our planet, making it appear larger and brighter than usual.
  • At its nearest point, the Buck Moon will be about 362,000 km from Earth. It’s the second closest Supermoon to our planet this year.
  • It will be easily visible anywhere in Singapore as long as the skies are clear, with an unobstructed view. Pro-tip: try open public areas like the Marina Barrage, East Coast Park and the Southern Ridges for a better view.
  • Yes, the Buck Moon can be seen with the naked eye, unless it’s a particularly cloudy day.

EAT

‘Made in Singapore’ with FairPrice

Farm to table eating doesn’t only let you feast on the freshest foods. The closer your ‘farm’ is to your table, you’ll be playing a part in encouraging sustainability as your food has a shorter distance to travel to you. It’s also part of Singapore’s 30 by 30 goal, which aims to produce 30% of our nutritional needs locally (up from the current 10%) by the year 2030. The best way to do this? Buy local. It’s easy too, with over 100 farm fresh as well as ready-to-eat products available at Fairprice. So the next time you’re at the supermarket, keep a lookout for the SG logo to support our local farmers.
