Hi Sunny Beach

Actually I was also trying to find out more abt reflux then saw this thread.

My boy 7mths was having high fever(around 40.3 degree) on 08th Feb around middle of the nite so we bring him to KK A&E. He was admitted & discharged on 12th Feb. Cause : UTI

Took Ultrasound scan on 10th Mar found that his left side kidney a bit swollen but which is acceptable according to the doc. But she wants us to take MCU to check whether isit reflux.

The nurse asked me to bring him inside & briefly explained wat is gg to happen. So I was asked to wait outside... Frm outside keep hearing my bb cry & cry

Around 10mins later, the nurse asked me to go in, I thought finished liao but who knws hve nt started yet. The doc & nurse trying to let my bb pee pee in order to scan. After finishing, I saw a tiny tube insert into his penis oops really pain lor cause he's still a bb.

Oops tink I forgot to reply yr qn :

After the MCU test next day, he got fever so we gave him paracedmol every 6hrs. Bring him to bath whenever his temperature is high. Keep sponging him. We decided to monitor for 1 day if not will bring him back to KK...Luckily it went down...Yippeee.......

hi all..

any mummies with bb gal here? cos i tink quite difficult to 'catch' urine. any mummies do it without much difficulty?

its been quite some time dat my bb always refuse to drink her usual amount of milk. nowadays only takes 240-300ml of milk per day. solids also eat very very little. she doesnt have fever but have rashes on her legs n behind the neck. is it alarming? i mean does it mean that the antibiotics is causing it and i should bring her to doctor? or is it normal? im so stressed cos afarid her urine infection is getting worse.
i will only be seeing a doctor reagrding her UTI on 4 apr which is quite some time from now..

hi all

my bb did mcu scan today. after the scan, i asked the radiologist so how is it. he said, got reflux. i feel so sad.

i will be seeing doctor in a wk's time. really scared. if got reflux means serious case is it? means got kidney problem is it?

my bb doesnt drink water. she hates it so even after solid, she only drink but three sips using spoon.

my boy going 4mths has UTI too. Suspected from his poor feeding. Took antibiotics for 7 days and did a urine test. Infection cleared but he still has to take a preventive antibiotic till the bottle finishes. The first med caused diar and this second one, i'm monitoring hoping it will not. Has been diluting his milk and so afraid he wldnt get enough nutrients. Yet to go for vaccination. Does your PD give second anti after the infection clears? I've done ultra scan and kidneys fine. Waiting to do MCU in June.

dunnoleh.. my antibiotics has to be taken on empty stomach, say two hrs after food or one hr before food. so difficult.. gd la yr one can be given wif milk.. wish mine also can.. but nowdays i very forgetful so just give 5mins before milk but dunno ok or not..

btw dat day wen i went to see doc and brought her urine along, doc says its clear, not really clear but only abit of white blood cells available but he says its normal cos for gals very difficult to get clean catch. but thank god, from 300 plus white blood cells, dat day only 13 cells.

but two days ago wen i went for mcu scan, radiologists say got reflux so dunno lor.. im looking forward to next wk to see doc for the results. really hope no need to take antibiotics again but seems like chances are slim..

hi all.

just got the results for my bb. doc says that she has reflux on both sides of her kidney and its under grade 3. so end of this mth have to do DSMA. so for now have to take antibiotics. so sad.
sad.gif

btw any bb done DSMA? how is the procedure? i keep asking the counter staff but still cant get the idea cos she say it takes 3hrs.

My daughter did DSMA, few months after doing the MCU.

Got to fast her from early morning, then when reach KKH, the nurse will inject some kind of liquid to her via the hand. After a while, they will ask the parents to try to make the baby to sleep so that they can do the scan. However, it difficult for my case cos my daughter is a light sleeper and she wun sleep when she go out.

So they gave her a sedation, after the sedation, she was brought to the room and was placed under the huge scanning machine. They will just scan her with only the machine rotating.

After they scan, the nurse will try to wake them up by tickling her, when she wake up, we can then go home. That's all.... not scary as in MCU...

My boy just had his MCU over the weekend, luckily got no reflux. At least, can heave a sigh of relief now.

Was told before the procedure that he will go to sleep after the sedation (by oral) and he will cry during the MCU. Not becos it is painful, but rather he will have to be pinned down. Was so afraid that he will cry as I would most likely be heartbroken if he does so.

Guess wat? He slept through the whole procedure, almost refused to wake up when we tried get him to wake up and wee wee.

hi all, my boy (currently 3 months, 1 week) has UTI for 2 times and we are going to do MCU for him.

Anyone here with reflux and what is the followup? Pls advise.

when doing MCU, u will have to bring your bb in, after u've lie your bb down, they will get u to go out, where they need to insert the tube. outside, u can hear your bb crying, after they insert, they will get u get to hold on to your bb while they do the scan. although i always feel so much heart pain whenever my son has MCU (he has done 4 so far), but it's awhile only, after the scan, he'll be back to normal..... it may sound heartbreaking, but i know it's for his own good, having the MCU is to ensure he's not having reoccurs reflux....

for those with low grade reflux (below 3), yes, they may recover themselves. but if things don't get better, it will scarred the kidney even more!

although my son 1st come down with high fever at 6mths old, he only had the operation at 15mths old, cause whenever the surgery is scheduled, he's down with UTI /fever again, hence the op was postpone, and this happens 3times....

although the op is successfully, but i still feel upset, cos he only has 1 functioning kidneys....

hi karen, thanks for the info. what is the operation that your son went thru? how is he now? may i ask what happen to lead to him havin only 1 functional kidney? Your son is so brave to go thru this.

I will be bringing my boy to the MCU next week. keeping my fingers crossed and praying for good news.

due to the frequent urine reflux he has, his kidney has been badly scarred by the back flow of urine. hence the badly scarred kidney only has 20% of function.

he undergo an operation to reimplant his ureter, as when he's born, he ureter is shorter that normal kids, hence the frequent urine reflux. after the op he has been declared recovered by his doc.

will have regular checkup once a yr....

don't worry, i'm keeping my fingers crossed and praying hard for u....

hi, unfortuately, my boy has reflux on left side - grade 4. right side has no reflux. my heart sank, but no choice have to accept it. dr says he needs to be on daily antibiotics and to go for MCU again at age 1. hopefully he can recover by himself when he becomes toilet train.

Karen, thanks and appreciate the info you have provided. i'm intending to bring my boy to another PD who specialises in kidney problems, to hear a 2nd opinion and whether to consider surgery.

my ds is now 20 mths old. he was detected with uti when he was 2 mths old and tests indicated he had urine reflux, grade V on both sides. It was also detected then that he was borned with 1 full functional kidney, with the other one smaller and only about 20% functioning. He has been on antibiotic since. Unfortunately, he suffered another uti attacked last week and has to be hospitalised again. This time, the Consultant at NUH recommended surgery to fix his refulx problems before it damages his only full functional kidney. (Tests show no scarring so far).

Is there anyone out there whose child had gone through such a surgery to fix the urine reflux problem? Can you kindly share with me your experience? I would also very much like to hear from parents whose child has single functional kidney. What are the things that we should look out for as the child is growing?

Hi z_planet may i know where did your son do the MCU? now i feel like Jaselyn...i can't sleep peacefully thinking about the MCU, how is it?

Hi Blur Blur, why after MCU your baby got fever? was it due to the needle that goes in? then after the fever went down any other test or after that he's just ok?
And i curious, you know baby penis the skin is so tight so they will forced it to open?

thanks..i need so much information...

Hi meilany, my son had his MCU done at TMC.
They will try to pull the foreskin back to facilitate the insertion of the tube.

Hi z_planet ,then how is it the result? do they give him sedation? how was he when he did MCU?
May i know how much it cost there?

thanks

hi meilany, just to offer more info. my son also did MCU at Mt Alvernia. It costs more than $200. yes, sedation was given. He was asleep thru out MCU procedure so no problem. After it was done, he continued to sleep for about 1-2 hours.

Hi meilany, it costed $263 w/o GST. As mentioned by mission, sedation was given via oral (see my earlier posting).

xuan,
my son was operated by Dr Yap Te Lu.
She has operated on many young children regarding this. A very friendly, and warm doc. ^_^ She's specialist in this area

Hi Mission, Z_planet thanks...
i was informed by the nurse at KKH there will be no sedation, i so worried, they said to stimulate the brain so later the baby must pee, i can't imagine how will he cries later. How long the MCU at Mt Alvernia and TMC? so then your child pee when he sleep? Big thanks!!

Nonsense! my elder dd went through 2 or 3 MCUs all with sedation! my girl in her sleepy state was still able to tell us that she wanted to pee and we assured her that it was ok to pee and that's how the x-ray was done!

dd had hers at Gleneagles Hospital..pretty fast, about 20 mins and she was done. I was inside the room with her. After the x-ray, she continued sleeping for an hour or 2. her pd is SBCC/Dr YYYip and Dr William Yip who did the kidney scan. With antibotics for over 2.5 yrs, dd never had another uti attack. she's 8 now.

How can that be? Your boy will feel uncomfortable and will fidget around.
He will definitely pee at the end because the bladder will be full.

The process takes less than 30 mins, all depends on how fast it takes to insert the tube into the penis.

Good to hear that mom2x, i think i have to change the hospital, since my boy also wasnot born in KKH, seems other hospital gave sedation, i wondering why they don't do this and other hospital do. So now your dd must be okay right?
does she need to do DMSA ? anyone did DMSA to the child?

According to the doc the 2 test (MCU and DMSA) is a must, even the MCU result is ok.

thanks...

Ya z_planet...you can imagine how will it goes, you see how come they didnt do sedation for MCU,i can't stand to hear him crying. But the doc said inserting the tube is 1 min job.

Can i check with you z_planet and mom2x, who did the MCU? was it the doc or the radiologyst?
thanks

mom2x, may i know what was the reflux grade for your child? my boy just had re-current of UTI, and wonder if should continue antibiotics. PD says have to, and no need to change antibiotics.

meilany, if MCU is ok, then should not need to do DMSA. why subject the bb to more radiation?

For MCU at Mt A, it was abt 30min - done at x ray dept, so i guessed it was by radiologist. def not PD. Waited 1 hour for results to come out and bring the results to PD to explain.

i intend to do DMSA for my boy end of this month. Regular PD said no need, but when I asked another PD, he recommends to do.

Hi,

was suggested DMSA by Dr William Yip but her usual pd/Dr YYYip said it's not necessary since her annual kidney ultrascan showed that both kidneys are of normal size and she did not have any recurrent UTI.

how to insert the tube when the baby is screaming and pulling away? it definitely will hurt and u scare the poor child...poor thing. i personally think that sedation is necessary so that the child can sleep through the whole ordeal.

I think it was the radiologist who did the MCU and the pd explained to us the results. hmm..if i'm not wrong, her reflux is at Grade 2 and 3. Yes, my girl took her antibotics for 2.5 yrs

Hi all,
I brought my boy for MCU yesterday, finnally still in KK with no sedation, i came to point that actually the tube insertion is not pain only that the baby is not comfortable with the condition he had and according to the radiologyst also the same,he was put on the bed that very fit to him, they only strap on the body so it doesn't move when the doc took photo, the hand and the leg is free, inserting the tube is very fast i think 5min done, and overall the process is about 15-20 min (Very fast), but only that for us as parent all these caused heart pain(hearing our love one cryi cried also heard my boy crying).., but i try to think logically, the tube is insert to the hole that has already there so actually it doesnt hurting anything like jab, and if Kk done this without sedation they has to be has already thinking about this before, there must be some advantage behind, as you know that KK is a known hospital specialist for children and belong to Singapore government,im sure if there is something not right Singapore gov must be very embarrased (Even though in my heart i still chose to give my baby a sedation so i didn't hear him cry so bad). And right fter the MCU it gave us as parents a relief...and the radiologyst doc said so far my boy is looks normal, that mean he has no reflux, we will see the doc in 2 weeks for the detail result. The bill is around 97 dolar in KK.

Went back home, he looks normal and okay, and naughty again ( i love to see him naughty) seems that he already forgot what had happened before.
thanks God.

i wondering if DMSA is a must? because so far a lot of them not do this also, any advice?

By the way thanks for all the information, i will always remember this forum.

wanna update you all, that my baby MCU's result is good and he has no reflux so no more antibiotics...so happy.

hi everybody! my son got the uti on this july (19 month) he will be doing the mcu on this friday 13 oct.is it any side effect after the mcu ?is it very discomfort or very pain afterthat? when inserting the tube is the baby unconcious or not? can anyone got this experiance give me some advise cos im very nervous now thx

Hi feiMing..you can read my previous experienced with MCu, where will your son do MCU? if KK surely no sedation.

thank fou ur reply Meilany. my boy already did the mcu. no sedation. too bad the radiologyst told me he got reflux on the left side level 1 n his right side ok no reflux.so i still hav to wait for the doctor to c wat to do next. is he need to do surgery or will he recover on his own when grow up? should i look for 2nd opinion (his now follow up at kkh)

Hi fei ming...
thanks God that ur boy has done his MCU,poor boy, but dont worry from what i knew that level 1-3 still can be recovered by itself, only that he needs to take antibiotics for quiet long, and he may has to do another MCU after that to make sure the reflux, i don't think ur boy need a surgery, surgery will be needed for those got worst one.

Hopefully he's getting better and better, give him a lot of drink, change diapers max every 2 hours, after poop i wash with soap also, before go to bed i also wash the genital area.

hi fei ming,
i think doc will only suggest surgery if the reflux is grade 3 and above.
those below 3, will be put on antibiotics to clear his reflux.
my son has grade 3 and 5, hence surgery was the only option for him.
he's seeing doc @ kkh also...

thanks meilany n dylanmummy, thanks god my boy no need any antibiotic. the doctor said he can stop the antibiotic cos the reflux is very mild and can be treated as normal.but he need to do the DMSA on the coming Jan and the urine culture also.should i bring him for DMSA?

feiming
DMSA is to test for the percentage of function each kidney has.
my son's previous result is 80% on right side & 20% on left size... hence his left kidney is smaller
this coming Jan, he's also going for his annual DMSA.
