Speech Defect in toddler

I know my son is still young at 18 months but I'm wondering if any other mummy can share if toddlers at his age can pronounce words beginning with letters 'h' and 'm'?

He still can't call me 'mummy', call me 'aye' instead but he can speak many other words including Daddy, ah Kong, Papa etc. He also pronounces 'horse' as 'shore' - i'm wondering if i should or should not be worried at this point.

He went through a cleft surgery and the doc did say he may need speech therapy if he can't pronounce words later so i'm wondering when is the right time to ring alarm bells.

any advice would be appreciated.

go polyclinic check. they'll refer u for speech therapist at KKH or NUH if needed

pte more x but better if u can afford

Hi Clam

Have you approached the Cleft Support Team at KKH? they are very professional and have a team of speech therapist to assist through the child's growth.

If you need the contact, do let me know.

Thanks for your responses. Yes Cath, my son has been visiting the Cleft and Cranio centre since birth and they have a fantastic team there. Went through the op with them too. He's recently called me 'mummy' though with some effort - comes out as 'babi' sometimes but i think he's getting there. phew.

If you can afford private speech therapist, try Yitian...she is really good. I have seen results in many children. Her number is 63338446 or 96687857

Hi! My youngest son used to have speech problem when he was little. he only pickup his words when he was 4. Back then I was a home maker and had sent him to polyclinic and he was referred to NUH. The cost saved alot for me then going for a private one if u can afford.

I had brought him to the polyclinic when he was 2 and he has gone for severals speech therapy and slowly he picks up gradually. He maybe slow in speech even till now, he's already 8.(P2) He is still rather slow comparing to other children of his age as I found that he's a shy boy. The speech therapist he has went through had told me not to worry as he will outgrow, e'thing will be fine... Seek help fm a professional and they'll be able to decide what really went wrong.

Hi,

It's good to find someone here share the same worries as me. My son is 4 years old. Although he talk alot, he is not good in articulating/expressing himself. I dun know if he wil outgrow or should i seek help?

Hi mums,
Need some advise here.
my boy is ard 3mths of age. Just realized dat a “cleft” will showed up in d middle of his tongue whenever he stick out his tongue. & d piece of muscle connecting d tongue and his gum underneath seem to b too near to his front gum.
Will dis affect his speech? Will he stutter when he learns to talk?

My girl doesn't want to answer me yes or no nor communicate with me when I ask her questions. Anyone wants to share the same problem?

Hi Lextine 777,

My son will choose not to answer us when we ask things that he is not interested in. Also, if he is concentrating on something like watching tv, playing with new toy or building blocks, he will not answer me at all.
As long as your child can listen, then it may just be that your girl is not interested or is concentrating on current activity.
You can try to ask her whether she wants a sweet if she did not answer you initially. Or try to distract her with something interesting. My parents said some children are like that.
However, if you discover that your girl does not answer you most of the time n is not interested in your cues n can play with 1 thing for a long long period of time, then you may want to seek PD advice.

thanks linda. Problem is, my girl is quite addicted to tv and I don't really have time sit down to do things with her.

Anyone knows any speech therapy classes around NE area? Or any mums care to meet up and to let their children socialise?

my child now 17 months. still also cant call daddy or mummy. wad i can do is to teach him everyday to call us. Do not be panic, every kid have different learning ability, he may not able to learn how to talk at young age, but he may be good in other way. that is wad i believed in.

hi lexnchris
try Leo Magan their charge 130$ initial visit, then about 200$ per month (1xper wk @1 hour)
i just called them the person who picked up the phone was Leo, he said he is the office manager (as we know from the center's name) but he himself doesnt sound good with his language.
But you can check.. the price is affordable not sure about the quality

I myself is looking for one for my kid, just came back from KKH consulted with the pediatrician seems like my son 4 y.o got speech delay prob and we need to find a speech therapist.
KKH speech therapies is available around July... very long waiting time.. *sigh*

HI Can i ask, by wat age if our child do not speak, will then be consider having speech delay problem?

My daughter turn 18 months, but she doesnt want to imitate me when i ask her to call me mummy. At most she will mumble bababa (which we think is papa).

Any kind soul to give advice?

hi, to which polyclinic did you go to to be referred to a speech therapy? sorry, first time to go to polyclinic, how is the process there?

my daughter is already 4.5 years old and she can't even say a sentence. she can say words but not well; pronounced and she has a very short span of attention.

Hi nathalie,
I have similar problem, my boy also 4.5 y.o have difficulty in understanding and forming sentence

U can just go to any poly for a regular child developmental checkup. Then the gp there will take a look at your child, conduct some tests and will release the referal letter to KKH usually.
KKH they have sequence of procedure before u can get a speech therapy,
1. need to see psycologist
2. Need to see PD
3. Need to see PD spesialised in child development
4. Need to do hearing test
5. Need to attend seminar for speech delay parents
Then within 3 months after ur firs visit to PD at KKH, u hopefully get ur first slot of seeing speech therapist

I'm now starting my session with Leapfrog, is more exp than KKH but u dunt have to wait that long

Hi, puddink shoppee,
I Am looking for private therapist for my son, is leapfrog good?
How is the price?

Tks.

Hi Joanna,
I'm a speech therapist so JTS: Generally, children will start their first meaningful words at the age of 1. By 2, they start to combine 2 words together, e.g. "mama eat". If she's saying "bababa", she's babbling which is a stage that children go through between 6mths to 12 mths. However, you want to ensure that she's got the pre-verbal skills required to learn how to communicate first. If you're concern, then seek professional advise/opinion. Usually, parents are taught how to stimulate their children in the sessions.

To Natalie,
The speech therapist will assess your child usually in an hour and then provide recommendations. Very simple "process".

Hi, I'm done almost the same process as agel. Cos waiting for kkh is a long process so I send my girl to private therapy and see result much faster. But along the way, I got help from friend with autistic kid and books that can educate me how to practise with her back home.

Can speech therapist help with excessive drooling. My son drools a lot even at 20 months. I have read this might be due to low muscle tone any advice or speech therapist to recommend

Hi, jayda,

My son tend to drool a lot too... Around that age... Think the big molars are coming out?!? I taught him to sip with a very thin straw, like those for Yakult and each time just give a little water in the cup so he is sipping harder. It helps them to build the muscles to swallow the saliva. Then. I also taught him to wipe his own drool with a hanky. More like a good habit and also heard that they will try to swallow more as they feel troublesome to wipe so frequently especially when they are playing and concentrating! I tried these and within a week, the drooling stopped!

Thank you ala, he can use the yakult straw but i would try to get him to use that more often. And the cleaning is a great idea would try that too! Thank you
