Heart Murmur, any info

Hi all

My 6 day old daughter has heart murmur
Was referred by the pd to mount E
After the scan, was advised to monitor baby breath (if too fast), weight gain etc and re-examine in a month

Have looked around and gathered some info
Things I've picked up:
-It's not terribly uncommon
-It could go away by itself
-There're people with heart murmur and just live with it without too much difficulty, probably just can't do heavy exercise and stuff

Things I've yet to find out:
- If there's any kind of treatment, what would it be? drug or what
- Touch wood ... if there's gonna be surgery, any info is appreciated:
+ any recommendation of doctor, clinic etc
+ cost
+ anything that parents need to be aware or prepare

Basically ... any info, any experiece
Thanks

My poor dd has both asd and vsd.
Faint...
Vsd larger: 5.6mm
Not sure if surgery is needed

Dunno consider large enough for surgery

Hi, Atri
My dd was aslo detected with both asd and vsd when she's 2 days old. She's currently 18 days old. What has your pd advised you on her condition? For my dd, pd only ask me to monitor and back for follow up when she's 3 months old. And when she's 6 weeks old, have to pay more attention to her breathing as it is when her lungs pressure changes to the lowest point. There might heart failure risk.
Initially I was as worried and panic as you are when the pd told me about this. But after I checked with my fren ( she has a 5 yrs old son which has the same condition), actually nothing much to worry. Just need to ensure bb is eating, resting and active.
And the good news, I brought my dd to pd yesterday due to her milk rashes, and the pd told me, she can't hear her murmur. There's possibilities the murmur has closed but it will only be confirmed when she has her follow up 2 months later.

Dun worry too much as it's pretty common to have murmur in newborn. Mostly will close by itself. Hope things turn well for both of us

Hi elle.
Yup. Pd referred us to specialist at mount E.
Vsd only confirmed then
We were told the same and made appointment a month later
Basically watching out for fast n short breath, ecxcessive sweating, bluish skin, slow n interrupted feeding etc
Oh, and avoid letting ur dd cry too much as she would loae strength which could also lead to heart failure
In the event where surgery is required, it seems that success rate is high though
Ya, hope for the best

Atri,
I had heart murmur, and it does sounds quite scary when first heard from doc that there is a hole in my heart.

But after when for further check at National Heart Centre, was already discharge. Some facts that i gathered was that
1. It is commom
2. It may or maynot close by itself, but there is no impact to normal daily routine.
3. Some more serious case may required antibody to boost up the immunity.

In short, i guess u need to get a PD for children or a specialist for adults to check on the conditions.

And since it is small children, jus monitor for those signs mentioned by ur PD.

Jus wanna share that not to worry too much, but there are people out there who live without knowing that they had heart mummur. For me, it was not detected till i was sick one day, when the doc listen and found that the flow of my heart "airflow" seemed abit different.

All the best.

Hi atri and elle,

My boy also just diagnosed tat he have heart murmur during his 3 mths follow up at policlinic. He is 15 weeks now.

Do i need to bring him to PD to double confirm again? He was refer to KKH to do a cardio test, all this test can cause harmful to baby ?

hi,Cheryl.
I think no need to bring to PD for double confirm because PD would also need him to do the cardiogram to verify. The test that my daughter had is not harmful. It's just like our ultrasound and baby won't feel uncomfortable. I just went to polyclinic yesterday to be referred to kkh cardio dept. When will be your appt? Mine will be next month. I do not go back to the PD that diagnosed her condition because I find cardio dept should be better equipped than normal PD and those in charge are heart specialist. Meanwhile just pay attention to his feeding, sleeping and breathing.
Btw, how was your boy detected to have heart murmur initially?

Hi Elle,

My appt is on the 10/11.KKH queue is super long...waited for almost 1 month.
My boy only detected during his 3rd mth checkup, prior to tat,his PD never say he has heart murmur even when we bring him for his regular checkup for his jaundice.

Cheryl,
ya kkh q is super long. i got my appt at 19/11, even later than urs. my gal was detected on the day she was born by her pd and did her echocardiogram when she was discharged. Maybe ur boy's heart murmur is very minor tat's y only detected later.
Dun worry too much. just keep monitor ur boy. if u feel something is not right, straight away go to doc.

hi my son was born w VSD and ASD and was termed swiss cheese heart cos his VSD are all lower chamber and alot -- like swiss cheese.

He is under Dr Wong private at mt E. Dr Wong is head at KKH but he has private practice too.

Had banding done when he is 7days old and at 7 mths his open heart surgery under Dr Shankar.

Cheryl, Elle
How's your baby?
My dd have gone back to Dr Wong for 2nd appointment and
....
he said

what we was afraid of ...

Surgery,
referred to Shankar too

Did it appear to you that Dr Wong is sort of "emotionless"? His words were kept to the minimal
Was a little uncomfortable
Read good review about him though (together with shared opinion about his coldness)

Anyway, my dd is now only 5 weeks old
You think I should seek 2nd opinion?
Like to contact you privately if you don't mind to check for more info rgd surgery

hi arti - u can pm me. what did Dr Wong say?

yes that is Dr Wong style. But i like him cos he is a v real doc. very unassuming and no airs. Yes he might appear emtionless but that does not affect his good judgement and skills.

I was crying my eyes out when i first met him... cos my boy's case v complicated. he has no emotions, he never offer me tissue, say i am sorry say dun worry...it was my pd who keep giving me tissue and comforting me.

but it is only after my son's surgerys and checkups w Dr Wong that i appreciate him more. Esp after i encountered a horrible 2nd opinion.

Dr Wong is the best in Spore in terms of PD cardiology. He is v v well known in the med field.

Dr Shankar is the best in heart surgery. my son's 2 heart surgeries are done by him.

pls contact me via PM...

Hi, Atri
My dd has also just gone for her 2nd appt last Friday at KKH. The big hole has closed but there is 2 more small holes, which they say should not be a problem and advised to go for another scan in 6 months time.
I hope everything is fine with ur dd.

Hi parents
Just thought I'd update
Had some helpful info from Vanilla
My dd has gone through unavoidable surgery around 2nd week of Nov
We chose team of 3 of Dr Shankar, Dr Tan and Dr Wong
Had quite a bit of complication but thankfully all seems to have been settled now
Anyone need any info, feel free to contact me via PM as I don't check forum often

Hi atri,

Your PM is closed. Wanted to ask you what is your daughter's condition? Why does she need surgery so young?

My daughter is 2mths and diagnosed with ASD. Sought 2 opinions... 1) SBCC Dr Chan KY (Mt A), 2) ICAC Dr William Yip (Glen). Both says her condition is stable, will only need surgery at least after 2 years old.

Can PM me to reply coz I oso don't check forum often. Thanks!

Hi Little oxygen,

my dd has both ASD and VSD.

for VSD that are not restrictive, that means alot of blood flows from one chamber to another, a surgery will be needed, or else the baby will fail to strive.

some VSDs and ASDs are so small that it wont affect the child, hence no surgery is needed until the hole is affecting the child's growth. that is why some kids have surgery later.

for ASDs, there are chances that it might grow bigger, depending on it's location. so surgery might be needed later in life, at abt 2 yrs old.

anything u want to know u can email me: [email protected]

i am no expert but having to go thru this makes one more informed.

ASD and VSDs are the least complicated problems of all congential heart defects.

there is a very active forum on baby center "baby and kids with heart problems". u might want to join and ask for more info.
