Hi fellow parents to be. My wife just tested positive early this week. Went to the doctor's and confirmed she is already 5 weeks pregnant. Both of us are on the look out for a gynae. What should we look out for when looking for one? Your valuable feedback is greatly appreciated.

firstly, will both of you be comfortable with a male gynae? or just want a female gynae? or fine with both?

secondly, the 'chemistry' with the gynae... some gynae my friends have been too and they didnt feel comfortable with them or didnt really like the way the mode of consultation... it's like 'gynae shopping'

or you can ask around your friends for recommendations?

For me, I look for a gynae who doesn't try to hurry through the appointment and yet don't have very long waiting time.
Also depends on whether you want to deliver at a govt or private hospital. Some gynae can deliver at different hospitals whilst some only at one hospital.
I also look at whether the gynae is pro-natural.

Hello, i suggest doing things together. Go to MOH website to take a look at the delivery statistic complied by MOH, that will give both of you a rough idea how much the delivery will cost at each of the hospital and the ward type etc. I am sure you will be able to jointly find one that fit your family budget. Do note that all the doctor consultation, scan, medication before the delivery are not included in the estimated figure shown on the website. This will help you indentify the hospital that will want to go, do not that if you want subsidy rate, then private hospital + ward "A" in all govt hospital will not be an option to you. On top of that, if you prefer a delicate doctor to follow thru your babe entire pregancy cycle, then you cannot be a subsidise patient.

Once you have chosen your preferred hospital, and if you want to be a subsidy patient, then just go to poly clinic to get them to refer you the your preferred govt hospital. If you decide to be a private patient, then i suggest you ask around all your relative, trusted close friend whether they know personally of any good gynac in your chosen hospital, once you got the doctor name, call up the hospital directly and make appt for your babe to see that specific gynac. After the 1st consultation, if your babe is ok with the gynac then can consider using him/her, if your babe for watever the reason she might or might not give you tell you she do not like that gynac, then please let her pick another gynac, repeat this process until your babe found a gynac that she is happy to work with.

Every hospital in Singapore have their fair share of excellent & shitty doctors. Excellent doctor typically have a longer queue and cost more and wear a more fanciful organisation title and have years of experience and therefore not tooyoung in real age. Having that, i do not mean that every doctor whose queue is short, reasonable price and has a more junior title and young is by default a shitty doctor. I am just saying commenting on the probability/ratio only.

Congrats & all the best.
