Hope some kind souls can help me! Im having a fever of 38c while breastfeeding my 3week old baby. Thr only symptom is sore nipple (one side, throbbing pain kind) but it has subsided, and I have no lump or engorgement whatsoever. Anyone knows how to deal with this? Shld I see a GP or LC for the problem? Thanks a lot!

hi, it could be mastitis. are you having fever with a bit of chills? and do you have redness around the nipple and areola? Please go back to your gynae or a specialised GP to get antibiotics, if not, what you can try is to pop 2 panadols and see if the fever subsides..hope this helps! I suggest don't go to the LC since you dont have any engorgement or lump, and go straight to GP/back to your gynae. :)

ok take good care of yourself! I had mastitis mastitis and also a more severe infection of abscess as i didn't recover fully from mastitis , so do ensure you monitor your fever :)

Thanks for the well wish! Does lump/engorgement always appear in mastitis? Im wondering if i got mastitis or some viral infection.. How long did it take for you to get over it? I applied nipple cream n the pain does subside..

typically yes...cos mastitis happens when engorgement or lump hasnt been cleared or massaged off. redness arnd the areola is a sign of mastitis followed by chills and fever. unfortunately the antibiotics i took from a gp during my mastitis didnt fight off the infection fully after a week and then i went back to my gynae whereby she referred me to a specialist. the specialist did a bacteria culture test and extracted alot of pus and dried milk from my infected breast to test and found that i was resistant to the previous antibiotics so i took another course of antibiotics for 2.5 weeks with weekly checkups to scan. luckily the new antibiotics helped to fight off the infection and the redness and swelling went away. when she first scanned the infected area was 7cm and the abscess (dried milk and pus) area was 3.5cm. nearly had to do a day surgery called incision of abscess but fortunately it subsided. some say continue to pump and latch but i didnt want to take the risk since i was on antibiotics and the specialist advised me not to latch and pump till i fully recovered.
