Eczema

Hi Sunshinekid
My mum and sis will also scold me when i bring her to my mum's place after the weekend, they will 'blame' me for not taking good care of her. Is it because your bb is always drooling with saliva? Now i will bring out a wet towek to clean her face after her feeds when we are out for the day. Coz at home i have to clean her face after every feed.

I think redness in skin is part and parcel... impt thing is that it doesnt last and cause discomfort in the baby.

Summer, yah sometimes it is due to saliva and heat rash..

Sunshine kid, I've PMed u.

paranoidmummy,

can i know the name of the cream? tks

lynnette,
this qv flare up oil that you mentioned, is it specifically for eczema? don't think i have seen this before in pharmacies.

missylan,

i find the weather quite colling recently since it is always raining. i think it did helped my daughter a bit. ya the cali cream only helped for a while then lost its effectiveness.

swisschoc,
Last week was damn hot... This week better... sorry shld stated last week! The california cream, no reaction for my monkey!

swisschoc, have leh can buy at NTUC pharmacy loh and i think GP also have.

missylan, the calendula cream is not working on your son har?. I think is reallie up to indivual liao.. cos it works for my son
happy.gif

another thing is .. i know if cost alot of money. But try to put your bb in the aircon room if you can. So that they will feel better and happier.

eggie,
Yah lor, no effect leh. My son sleeps in a/c room during his every nap. Sometimes, weather too warm, I will on the a/c. But still it is another alternative when I want to give him a medicine free lotion.

Yah i noticed the rash comes back when the weather is hot esp when he perspire. For some reason he is always stratching his ear area and inside the ear... my MIL likes to put alot of powder for him and after each bath his ear will be full of powder, do u think it is causing the itch in his ear?

O no! paranodmummmy.. i tot baby with enczema, cannot put powder?

you should put for moisturiser for him.. i think the ear is itching cos is dry. My son also like that.

huh cannot put meh? Dr didnt tell me... My MIL still has the old thinking, coz he is always perspiring and feeling sticky. My MIL likes to "smooth" him by applying powder. Last time I dint like coz I am afraid of him breathing in but they always do that behide my back..

It's itching inside leh. I see him "digging" his ear. How to put moisturiser inside?

haha... dig inside.. i mean outside the ear lah.. haha..

My PD told me cannot put powder leh.. issit because of the powder.. your son feel more itchy har?

I am not too sure too, cos usually after bath he is okay with it, its only when he is sleeping or when there's nothing to distract him he wil start to itch like a monkey like monkey, sometimes even his whole head. He just keep sratching...

Hi mommies, y don't u try Renew Intensive Skin Therapy lotion? I was introduced by my friend who knew my daughter had eczema. It's chemical-free and made of products solely from nature, esp tea tree oil. We applied it for her twice a day, and we slowly saw results in a few weeks. We also changed our household agents (from washing detergent, dishwashing liquid, floor cleaning agents etc) to a non-harmful one ie.ones that are toxin-free so that at least she could be at home in a 'safe' environment with regards to the harsh environment outside. Now she's much better but we're still on the road to letting her have a full recovery. She has not been scratching much, even during the weather that blows hot and cold these days.

Hope i've not stepped on any toes here, just wish to share what my daughter and i, as a mother, has gained..

hi mummies anyone here knows if hydrotopic cream & elomet is suitable for pregnant ladies?

i got this cream from my GP before i m preggy..so not sure if i can continue using this now that i just found out i m preggy.. rashes starting again
sad.gif

Hi belle,

Elomet can be used.. I also had eczema when preggy... But used minimally... Alternatively, you could use cold press to subside your eczema.

If u are still not sure, call up your gynae to check with them whether the cream is fine to use for preggy

hi puppy2006 tks! now more assured that elomet can be used. was told by my GP when he prescribed the cream to me that its a fast acting higher end cream so i tot it could be too strong for preggy ladies.

I will only have my first appt with gynae tom evening so will check with him again

tks again!

Just stumbled on this thread. Has any one tried Donkey's milk soap or Goat's milk soap before for eczema babies? Please let me know if the results. Thanks!

Harlow,

My friend's baby also had ezcema...here are some of the things she did to reduce the problem:

- she fed her baby some natural supplements to detox the baby's liver cos ezcema is a liver problem

- she fed her baby goat's milk when she could not b/feed anymore because chemicals would worsen the condition. So i would think that if you b/feed, pls stay away from too much processed food.

- she also tried to stay away from air con because it would give her baby rashes.

I think after working hard for 7,8 months, the last I saw her baby.. he is quite healthy and happy... ;)

Hi mummies

Jus wondering this ezcema ur are toking abt, is it the so called "milk rash"? Are they the same?
My gal have rashes on her face now and then and my mum tot me its milk rash.. so we jus apply cream for her. It will go away for a while but always come bk.. will not disappear totally. Me also looking for help. Pls advise.

Hi babe99
The milk rash that you are referring to is most probably eczema. My girl has rashed that comes on and off and I brought her to PD and PD says it's eczema. It gets worse when I din clean her face after her feeds, esp. so if you're BF.

summer

yes, cfm its eczema...sob sob..

how's ur gal eczema now? my gal also only on her chin area.. i think cos of milk and saliva...
PD gave me Elomet but i heard its has got steriod in it.. so apply few times only..
Wat other creams gd and wif no steriods in it?

Actually, wat is steriods and how it harms the skin? I heard not gd for bb but i do not noe y.

Babe99
my gal's eczema is much better now but I have to be real careful with what i eat. Her chins and cheeks are very prone to it, so I have to make sure i wipe her face after every feed else it will come back.

Yes, PD also gave me Elomet but I did not use them. Coz I have other steroid creams like Fucicort (this works wonders for my gal). After one application, can see great improvements... the rash will subside. But then again, it's steroid.

Elidel is also good and it's a non-steroid cream. Expensive though... $50 per tube. You may also try Physiogel, it's a moisturiser and i apply very thin layer on my gal's face, very ver thin and i can see improvements too. You can get Physiogel from Guardian at about $23-24 but I got mine from PD at $18. I use it for her whole body as a moisturiser too coz PD advised against fragranced lotions like J&J due to her sensitive skin.

Steroids are potent and will thin the skin in the long run, that's why use of it should be limited unless necessary.

hi mummies,

I m bfing. recently i hv been drinking milk n soya milk n since 2 weeks ago, my ger of 3mths has rashes or so called breakouts on her face, neck, elbow line, armpits n scalp. Do u tink its eczema?
cos previously she has it during 1st mth n after tat no more n now come back again n she keep scratching her head til got abit of water comes out n i quickly put on mittens for her. pls. advise wat shld i do!

Hi kite

I suggest you bring your child to skin centre. You call call up to make an appointment. You can try to fix it today however you have to pay a bit more. I think your daughter has cradle cap on her scalp which is actually eczema too. It happens to my son at about 2 to 3 months old. I try to buy those shampoos from the pharmacy meant for cradle cap but it does not work. When I broght him to skin centre, the paedatrician mentioned that I should have brought him down earlier to relieve his problem. Just apply one application of the medicine, his condition improves greatly. My son is seeing Prof. Giam but I think any doctor there should be good enough.

kite~
Stop drinking milk and soya milk as this will cause your baby's skin to worsen. I am also bf and before that i din know that cow's milk and soya milk can casuse eczema to worsen until i brought my gal to the PD and PD says that it's eczema and cow's milk, soy pdts, eggs, peanuts, seafood (esp. those with shells) are most likely causes to trigger their rashes. Since, i have stopped taking soya milk which i did previously, and i see an improvement in her chin and cheek areas.
You need to see the dr to get some moisturiser for your baby coz i think your baby have very dry skin? The key to prevent eczema is to keep the skin moisturise coz when their skin gets dry, eczema will return. Physiogel is good.

hi

u can try the emolient cream, brand is Mustela. It costs S$35.

My 2.5mths old gal had this dry skin around the folds of her hands and legs...it definitely looks like eczema...but have not seen a doc on this. I used the cream for 3 days continuously and it went off..

hi everyone,

been busy. thanks for e advise. i brought her to a pd n i also use bb california cream n it helps too. Since 2 wks ago, i hv stopped milk, vitagen(contains milk solids) n soya milk n my ger's condition improves alot!

Dear Mummies,

I'd like to share with you my story of my daughter who has had eczema for more than 2 years. Recently, I have found the 'solution' to ease her itch and her pain. I won't be here sharing the story if I havent 'tested' it out myself and I know all the pain you go through.

My daughter had a red outbreak on her neck when she was about 5 mths old. Since then, there had been no return. The red patch spread from her neck to her face and eventually her body. I saw how my daughter turned from a smooth-faced pretty baby to one who was constantly itchy. It was heartbreaking.

This happened when we were in UK. We saw the PD faithfully each time we had an outbreak. We met doctors who used steroid to control the flares and doctors who recommended alternative treatment mentioned here - aloe vera. We tried everything possible but I'm pretty stoic about avoiding steroid. The eczema happened when baby was in UK and when it was time to wean the baby, we also found that she had wheat and milk allergies. However, baby all along was on bf, so it was not an issue on the milk but definitely one on food. We also tried giving her kiwi fruit which ended in disaster. Her allergies to kiwi fruit and milk was acute and milder for wheat.

When we were back in Singapore, our daughter suffered the most. She had major outbreaks and flares in the sultry heat and humid weather. Nothing we did could appease the red, fiery skin and our daughter really suffered with broken red skin. When we brought her to the PD, she was diagnosed with acute eczema (what else is new?) I was with my daughter most of the time and I, too, suffered all the finger-pointing from everyone and anyone. I met people who made me feel that I had been the worst mother and I also met those who gave me geniune advice which simply didn't and wouldn't work. No one understood what I went through, what I tried, and how hard I tried. Most of all, all the sleepless nights and of course, helping the baby to overcome all the itch and discomfort. It was an equally bad time for our baby. The itch would wake her up and we were adivsed to give her anti-histamine when she has a flare to quell the itch and let her have a good night rest. I avoided all form of medication as far as possible unless she has an allergic reaction, which can be quite common. It was a desperate situation for me and my daughter. I generally avoided most people who didn't understand what I was doing and I quit explaining to anyone who made me feel really lousy.

My daughter's eczema is evidently shown on the redness of her skin. One day, we were on holiday in Ireland and one of the staff in the resort spotted my daughhter's red skin and how we kept her busy, distracting her. She told me her friend's daughter had a similar situation and a doctor in Ireland recommended her something that worked and she told me she'd find out and let me know what it was. It was called, Dream Cream and Dream Wash, from LUSH.

When we returned to UK, we bought dream cream to apply on my daughter. It was truly good. It controlled her itch and we gradually saw that the itch she suffers from has considerably subsided. Furthermore, she no longer needs to scratch with a vengence. Our daughter has also acquired the habit of scratching when she is tired/bored/needed attention, on top of her eczema. As you know, once the scratch begins, it becomes a vicious cycle of more scratching, broken skin, and if crying, heat, more itch and the horrors go on. With the use of dream cream, it has dramatically decreased the itch and with that, a lot of other problems. I was so happy with the result of the Dream Cream, I forgot about the Dream Wash. In August, we made a trip to Shanhgai and at the humid weather of 35-38degree, I knew that she was not going to make it. I went to LUSH and requested for a sample of the Dream Wash. I never looked back. My daughter still had redness on her skin but she did not need to scratch (probably the itch was gone) and she was and is still fabulous looking.

Today, my daughter is a smooth-faced, happy and has 'controlled eczema'. There will be occasion flares from sudden weather changes but with the use of dream wash and dream cream, she really has such a dramatic change. I strongly encourage all parents who are going through what I have gone through with an eczema baby to try dream cream and dream wash from LUSH. I remember there used to the a LUSH shop at Suntec City but I cannot seem to find the Singapore shop online. Look at what is says on the website about dream cream :

http://www.lush.co.uk/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=28_33&products_id=231

Dream wash :

http://www.lush.co.uk/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=13

You will find the ingredients to be mostly natural. You do not need to slap loads on to use them. A good 250g of dreamwash has lasted for more than a month and although it is not cheap (about S$18), it is wellworth the money spent. I strongly recommend that you use dream wash and dream cream. I started with dream cream because I was skeptical that any other wash (we had been using balenum for soooo long) would work but I have never looked back since I started on dreamwash.

I'd like to share in short, some of the issues discussed by all the parents here and my personal experience :

1) baths - use tepid water, no bubble baths or normal baby shower foam. use balenum or oilatum (expensive) but can seriously keep baby's skin moist.

2) powder - told to avoid as it dries the skin. never used since birth till now; daughter is over 2 yrs old.

3) steroid - i avoided it as far as possible and was recommended other creams with non-steroid for long term use but with other possible side effects (cancer); used steroid (hydrocortisonne) for a very short time but decided to be determined and gave it up. Proved to doctor that without the use of steroid, the condition improved (doc thought I used the steroid perscribed to control the eczema). However, I'm a full time mom and I spent all my waking hours with my dauhter. So, I understood her totally and did everything within my possible mean to help her overcome her itch (bf is very calming; distracting; teaching her to control, esp when she got older). I know it will be very hard for caretakers and believe me, it is NOT the easy way but well worth a try if you can mange the time. I did not use any creams that would have any long term effects and stuck to moisturzing creams like epaderm (worked best for my daughter; oil based, very oily and doesn't work very well in hot weather, but ok in aircon), E45 and oilatum cream.

4) Food - I did not find out if any food intake of mine affected the baby. My baby was bf till she was 2 and now, she is on soya milk. Her allergies has moved from mild for wheat to acute for everything and she is also now diagnosed to be allergic to eggs. If your bb has allergies, best to avoid all of the food and have the allergies properly diagnosed. I think my daughter has the worst combination of allgeries possible but we have survived the food intake part. It used to be a struggle but food preparation gets easier as they grow.

5) chinese medicine - tried no oral medication cos bb was too young. was recommended 'jing ying hau' for showers and tea leaves. either didnt work or didnt stick to it long enough.

6) Clothes - yes, use cotton and dont keep babies with eczema warm. keep as cool as possible. my baby's eczema did get to a point where I used tubifast (a cotton 'bandage' of sort that covers her arms so that she wont think and wont scratch). it really helped.

7) Fish oil - a natural therapist who saw my daughter's dry skin when we were out told me to give her fish oil. i gave her and it did help and with a daily capsule (not take in capsule but squeezed) of fish oil, she no longer suffered from dry broken skin. Fish oil helps to keep the dryness and broken skin at bay but not the itch. Uptil today, we keep up with the daily intake of fish oil.

Most IMPORTANT - Mothers - pls dont feel discouraged when dealing with eczema babies. I have been through it and i know what is it like. i had the worst time ever and all mothers need to be strong in order to help bb go through it. i know how it feels like to get the blame and made to feel that u havent been a good enough mother. it's not your fault. keep trying. distract the baby. teach from young (i taught me daughter when she was abt one) that they need to control (think of a sign for control; mine was 2 fists moving up and down by the side) and keep telling them that. it works miracles. keep them busy. distract, distract, distract. always have some 'new' toys hidden in the cupboard, if really cannot distract anymore, take out something new to distract. if babies have allergies, always bring anti-histamine in your bag. you wil never know when bb has a flare/allergic reaction. ask pd in this area. they can advise. most of all, dont give up hope. and dont worry, eczema is not your fault at all. both my husband and i do not have any forms of allergies or asthma but baby has everything!!! until today, my MIL is still thinking perhaps i had durians during my pregnancy, etc...... to me, it is not impt and they are irrelevant. just focus on helping your child. it is more important. eczema babies/children go through a lot of pain themselves and their quality of lives is also affected, as well as the parents. i personally feel if parents learn to deal with it, they will be able to help their children. Most of all, don't give up. it gets easier when they grow older.

today, my daughter still has eczema with red skin but definitely controlled. she no longer scratches often and is not in great discomfort. she understands the meaning of control and she often tells us to rub for her when there is a need. my daughter has a lot of empathy for people with pain, we figure, from her own pain of dealing with eczema and allergies.

So, go try Dream Cream and Dream Wash! and maybe give fish oil (do be careful to give the right type for the right age!!! i started from a yr plus).

And im most willing to share any information or any questions you have in the course of helping your child to deal with eczema.

My heart goes to you and your child in dealing with the problem but remember, every cloud has a silver lining.

dear jazzmint,

do you order your dream cream & wash from the same website you posted or do you get them in Singapore? If latter, could you let me know the address in Singapore?

Many Thanks for sharing info.

Dear Mummies,

U can try Skin Soothe from Cherub Rubs. It is a cooling gel to help with the redness and itchiness arising from skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. Also helps treat insect bites. On top of that it is all natural, Certified Organic. It is from Australia. U can get it online at www.ahomeonearth.com, it is also retailed at some pharmacies.

My son likes the cooling effect of the gel. I use it on him for itches, insect bites.

Hi, went to see a GP at bedok yesterday. He is a very good skin doctor but his charges are not cheap! Saw PD a few times but no improvement so I decided to see this GP.

I stopped giving my son breastmilk cuz PD told me what I eat will affect his skin condition. After this GP saw my son, he said I made the wrong move! His eczema is not triggered by food..no problem to breastfeed!

He gave me Elomet, Bode and Physiogel AL. He also said baking powder mixed with water is excellent to cleanse sensitive skin!

I havent tried the baking powder method but so far after applying the creams he gave, I can see improvement! Will continue to monitor and update all concerned mommies out there. Please write to me too

kai ting

perhaps u might want to get your son checked for allergies. Coz eczema is caused by allergy, whether dust or food etc.

My boy had a bad case of eczema for 7mths, then we thought it might be the milk and we switched it to soy. It went away after a few days and we've not seen its return again except for a few bouts of it due to other food allergies.

Despite a specialist whom I saw at National Skin Clinic (he insisted that there's no such thing as food allergy causing eczema), I believe in food allergies esp after seeing my son recover miraculously in a few days after I switch the cow's milk to soy milk. Not even steroids could do that.

Hi mashybrainz, for his case atopic dermatitis is inherited from his daddy. There is no family history of asthma or hay fever. I was doubtful initially because I thought it is caused by allergy too.

GP told me not all eczema is triggered by food. Anyway after I saw this GP, I continue to breastfeed my son..apply the cream he prescribed.. today is the 3rd day and my son's skin is baby soft! A prayer answered..

Thanks for sharing..
happy.gif

How old is your boy now?

Oh jus to add on..Eczema is a term for many kinds of skin problems. There are atopic dermatitis, contact eczema etc. So not all is caused by food allergy. FYI only

Hi
I strongly believe that food and dust play a very big part in causing Eczema. When my girl was in Malaysia in a hotel with carpets. Her skin flared up so badly even steroids don't help. On the night we return to Singapore, her skin improve like it was a miracle.

Kai Ting

Elomet is a steriod too, so use sparingly.

Hi Jamie, thanks for sharing.. my cousin's son has eczema and is sensitive to dust..so i agree some people r allergic to food or dust.. maybe my case is the minority..

sure..i will take note.

Hi all

My boy always come out with big patch of rashes , starts with the neck usually...when he perspire...any moisturer anyone can recommend for him to apply before the rashes attacked?thanks

Dear all mummies,
In my recent course in Enzyme Therapy, the US Nutrionist teaching the course spoke abt how the use of Probiotics Enzyme can ease eczema, even for infants.

Hi mummies
Sorry tt your kids are suffering from ezcema. I am suffering from it since pregnancy 3 years ago.

Moisturise moisturise LOTS. Use fragrant free pdts. Anything tt dries the skin is not good for the condition. If must sleep in air con, use humidifier or simply place a small bucket of water in the room. (you will notice the level of water reduced visibly in 2 days)

Beware of steroids.. not only it thins the skin, it also can cause the frequently applied areas to be darker in colour. I got such marks all over my legs... Got to hide them in pants mostly. But 3 years...it is getting to my self esteem... pple have asked me politely before if hb abused me, some have queries abt my "contagious" skin condition when I am near their children (which I dun blame lah), the marks looked scary.

Initially, I am not too bothered nor concerned abt this...cos I was 6 mths pregnant and later on, too busy with work and newborn to care abt it.

Now 3 years on, I am still looking for a way to improve my condition, any advise appreciated. I also have been recommended Laroche Posay pdts from Guardian Pharmacy. Wonder how well it will work and if anyone using them, pls let me know?

Anyone knows how to lighten those darken spots? One spot has recovered, completely flat with no more secretion but still dark.

National Skin Centre can help? Chinese medication?

And when we say "controlled eczema", how then is considered controlled? I know this condition has no cure literally, but how to prevent them from "spreading" or to reduce my no. of spots?

linda
i am an ezcema sufferer for years. now still suffering but not tat bad. i went to dr yang and yap in bedok. they hv the cream to lighten dark spots. i was with national skin centre for years. but dun help.

now , i hv to control my diet in order not for the rashes to flare up.
