CVS versus Amnio test

Hi all,

I'm starting this thread, hoping to seek advices from those mummies whom have similar situation as me.

My OSCAR result was bad, with 1:20 high risk for Trisomy 13. And most devastating news was they couldn't find the nasal bone/bridge during the NT scan.

I was advised to do either CVS or amnio at KKH. Both invasive. My hubby prefers to do CVS cos can do it before week 14, while amnio can only be done at week 16. I prefer amnio as it seems more commonly used, and hence I hope more skillful professionals around. I have never heard of CVS, so lack in confidence in it.

Does anyone have experience in doing either test could share your with me which test is better?

thanks much!

Ixora, have you considered getting a second opinion? I read from threads that some ladies consulted Dr Anandakumar @ Camden before deciding if to proceeding with further tests. With CVS & amnio, both have their own risks.

All the best to you!

My Oscar results were bad, too, all because of the blood test! T21 was 1:37, T31 was 1:43. Went to Dr. Anandakumar for a detailed scan and my adjusted risk went down but still considered risky (a risk of 1:200 is considered high). Structurally, the baby was fine but chromosomally, the scan couldn't confirm that. There are babies who are structurally fine but chromosamally not. You can think of it as the hardware and software. We decided to have an amnio at week 20, after the detailed scan. Baby is ok!

Amnio carries a 0.5% risk of miscarriage ie. 1:200. I fear more of the risks associated with amnio than the results.

thanks Chevy. Yes I found the thread that some mummies shared about Dr Anandakumar. Will find out more there. Thanks.

Ica, what a wonderful news for you. Happy for you.
Your example of hardware and software is good. I see, so it's still good to go for amnio for peace of mind..
Btw, the detailed scan you took is the usual 2D detailed scan at 20 weeks right? Not the genetic scan done by Dr Anandakumar?

The 1st scan I did at Dr. Anandakumar's clinic ie. the genetic scan was also a 2D scan, just more detailed than the detailed scan done at week 20.

Hope to hear good news from you

Hi mummies,

So far my ratio is the worse 1:4 and I'm at age 34. It was, really scary and worrying when I first saw the Oscar results. My gynae advised me to go for amino test at week 18 cos bb is more stable though can be done at week 16. Amino test was OK..not so scary though. After the test, you need to rest and try not to move about. After 2 weeks of waiting... results finally out and bb is OK. No signs of ds... I read alot and it seems like there are alot of false readings for Oscar results. Dun be too worried. I been through what you are facing now and think positively, your ratio is much better than mine.

I'm sure your bb would b fine. Cheers

Hi all, my first trimester screening risk was 1:180. After now detail scan on the blood flow and my blood test, the risk was reduced to 1:1700. However baby neck thickess was 3mm bad they found a cystic at the chest area. Wondering should I proceed with cvs. Kkh does not offer me to do cvs or amino yet. They want me to go back for another scan on week 15 before deciding need to do amino

Ica,
If u dun mind, may I know when did u do the genetic scan with Dr Anandakumar? Week 12-13?
Btw Mummies from other thread shared that the genetic scan is 3D, that's why it's more details. Not 2D right?

Miko,
Thanks for your assuring words. Happy for you that your bb is fine :) this is so encouraging.

Hope4baby
Have replied your PM. sent u the link on the genetic scan.

For the benefits of others, there is a thread shared by a kind lady, about genetic scan

I did my genetic scan around week 13 - the nurse said the prof only does it when one has completed 13 weeks.

The genetic scan is 2D, just that it is more detailed. Initially I thought it was 3D too until the prof started the scan and I looked at the monitor

Ica,
I just got to know that prof has both 2D and 3D genetic scans. He will decide to use either technique by case basis.

Hi

Jts. I had done cvs for my #1 due to thick neck fold. Few days Aft doing cvs, my water bag leak n have to bed rest for 1 mth. For #3, I had done amino due to bad Oscar result. Cvs is done at an earlier stage n is more invasive than amino test. Cos amino test is done at a later stage of pregnancy.
