I'm expecting my first child in Jun 2012. Been thinking of buying either a Cot or Play crib/Playpen for baby to sleep during the night. Was wondering which is better? Nowadays these are advertised as 2 in 1, 4 in 1 etc. Anyone has advice for me? Thanks in advance.

there are 3 in 1 cots which can be converted to toddler bed in future which i like. my baby is using a cot. playpen is cheap and works the same way except by the age of around 1 they might start to climb out..

I'm a first time mum too.. bought playpen and regretted.. should get a cot.. that's the proper furniture for bb to sleep in..

Both cot and playpen have two heights.. However, for playpen the 'cardboard' is not as firm as cot.. When my bb is about 6/7 kg.. It started to curve in when bb is placed on it. Thus, I have to remove it and use the base instead.. For a long run, my back will give way.. Thinking of getting a cot for now..

fortunately i have both, second hand from friends. very old but in working condition so we just take and save the money. the playpen will be used for confinement at my parents' place, so baby still small hopefully no problem. the cot will be used at home, hopefully baby will grow up willing to sleep in it until we need to get her a bed...

hello,

i'm a first time mom due in nov and need some advice for the following:
- should i get a cot now, or let NB sleep on a another mattress on the floor next to us with us for a couple of months while i BF (my bed is mattress on a platform) in case he doesn't want to sleep in it?
- is it really that practical to buy a cot that converts into a junior bed since we won't know if the bed will even last that long?

Thanks to anyone who could help!

Hi Spidyqueen, if u intend to BF the easiest is to let bb sleep with you. Esp at night when it's most convenient. But note it's not advisable to have your hb also beside you? Not safe for the bb. Personally, miy gal slept separately but in the same room. So at least twice a night, either my hb or I have to get up and carry her to me for feeding.

hi spidyqueen,

for nb, it is good to start train them sleep in their own cot especially at nite. NB cannot differentiate daytime and nitetime. So by putting them in their cot at nite, off the light(on aircon if required) can help to train them to adjust to timing and they sleep longer through the nite and to be independent to sleep alone. During the day, they can sleep nap in the living room, or rocker/ on your bed. By letting the baby sleep w the adults over time, he will need to sleep with someone beside all the times. The same goes for bringing the Baby out -- if u start with Sling, the baby will be used to being carried around to sleep. If u start with Stroller, the baby will be used to sleep in stroller, and cannot sleep by just carrying him.

Very interesting and it is so true!

I only bought playpen, no regrets...baby currently 9mths n learning to stand inside her playpen, she often falls down back into her mattress or netting of her playpen. Would be terrible if she slps in a cot coz I cant imagine if she falls back n knock onto the wooden parts of a cot!
