(2009/07) July 2009 MTBs

Sam,
THANKS!! I haven't got his potty yet!! $1.50 is the kind of price that I like...maybe I can go there this weekend...if they still have it!!

japa,
I try not to use metal spoon whenever possible. But sometimes if I then no choice, the just be careful. I once forgot to pass my mum bb's spoon and I didn't want her to use her non BPA-Free plastic one, so I said to use her metal one, but jut be careful. I think you should BUY a spoon for your MIL and tell her, "Hey, I just realised that I (make it your fault) didn't give you a spoon to feed M, so you've been feeding her with a metal spoon, and that's quite dangerous." The she has no choice but to use yours. If you make it "your fault", she wont' be upset and may listen to you....?

Jillian,
Y has been waking up once a night now!! Very irritating1 He used to sleep from 7.45 - 5/6 am, but now he wakes up around 4./4.30 and this has been going on since CNY! At first I thought it was CNY which disrupted his routine, but now it's still like that! Arghs! And he's not teething!

Spoiling baby by praising:
I have appointed some friends to be "police" for me if I become too hao lian (LOL!!)...my parents also not the sayang type, so I give bb a lot of cuddles and always reinforce when he's done something good!

Re: Fish (again)

for all kind of fish I dun feed my gal the skin.. usually i dun cook with the skin cos it will be more fishy ...

Pe@nut, as Kim had advise, threadfin = ngor hee, remember not to buy the cheaper ones which are breed not caught. breed ones are more fishy in smell.

Kim, Gao He .. eh not sure how many kinds are there..

keke but i think the kid have 2 to 3 varities will do bah. keke .. i know even fish like Selar is ok to feed as long we remove the tiny bones

japa

i use metal spoon to feed my gal. No prob leh. In fact, it's so much easier to feed coz it's thinner than plastic ones. Well, it's still better than BPA plastic spoons.
happy.gif
It won't injure them, don't worry, since the spoon just goes in and comes out quickly.

Agree that if u prefer a plastic spoon, buy and bring over to your MIL's place. I buy high chairs, plastic spoons and forks and bring over to my MIL's place even though we're there only once a week. My SIL super lazy, just used the small plastic spoon that my boy used when he was a baby. Now her son is already 2 yrs old and still using the old plastic spoon which is the size of a teaspoon.

chiyojade/mashy, my MIL takes care of Mia when i'm at work. and me a kiasu mother, practically bought everything there! she has 2 of the combi plastic spoon that i use! she told my hubby because the plastic spoon is too short to reach for the porridge which is stored in the Tiger food jar, so she just use the longer metal spoon to feed.she did not think of pouring out part of the porridge (if she worry the porridge gets cold easily) and feed? sigh.
my hubby had explained and told her off on this.
i'm like detective, every few weeks will catch something and it's so tiring.
few weeks ago MIL was caught feeding Mia water using her milk bottle when she can actually drink from her magmag straw cup. she thinks drinking from milk bottle will drink more. i showed a black face and my hubby had to talk to her. the day after she come tell me Mia indeed drink quite alot of water from the straw cup. i dun know what's her point then.
sigh.... it's just one of those days where i see all the cons of her taking care of Mia and feel down abt it
sad.gif

tks all for yr adv.

japa

oh, they advised shouldn't feed directly from the jar in case the porridge is too hot. May burn bb's tongue. I will be more worried abt that than using the metal spoon. :p

It's like that lah. When u let other pp take care of your bb, u need to close one eye. If not, you'll feel very uptight abt it. I think it's a 1st child syndrome. I refused to let my MIL handle my son and was very protective and anal over everything. Now with no 2, hehe, i learned to let go already. Coz whatever u do, they still grow up.
happy.gif

I've a friend with 3 boys who once told me.

When she had her 1st son, she was very kan cheong over everything and took care of every detail. Then he grew up.

When she had her 2nd son, she was less kan cheong and less detailed. He also grew up.

When she had her 3rd son, she couldn't care less. And he still grew up on his own.

So no matter what we do, they'll grow up. So dun have to fuss over everything. Just see the big picture.
happy.gif

It's the same treatment that we do to pacifiers. 1st kid, every time the pacifier drops, we wash, sterilise the pacifier. Eventually, we just wash with hot water. Then we dipped in cool boiled water. Finally, we just blew on the pacifier and stuff it back into his mouth.

With my no 2, the most we ever went was to wash with tap water. :p Sterilising was done only once a week, then monthly.

RE: Feeding spoon
I was using the combi spoon (the one that came with noodle cutter) initially but some weeks after introducing cereal, XY started to reject feeding spoons and I finally used a metal ice cream spoon as the base like can contain more. Don't think it can cause any problem since our babies are at this age that they already know about food so very rarely they bite the spoon. Well, for my case at least XY does not bite the spoon anymore
happy.gif
Recently I started using the BPA free First Few Years spoon. These are GREAT!!! Easy to feed. Much better than the combi and can fit into the combi case as well. AlI'm going to use for long term eventhough they stated on the packaging as disposables.

RE: Caretaker
Yes, simply can understand the agonies when you let ppl take care for you. I admit I am those kind of anal person that's why I refuse to let my father (or his maid) help with XY. I rather put her in IFC when I returned back to work from maternity leave. The thing with "own" ppl, you can restrict them too much or they will get fed up and you will also get fed up when you notice too much things you don't like. It will also be hard to them that every step they do they have to think twice. Put in IFC at least the teachers do try to act acc to instructions (if any) and you can't see it so just assume they done it. That was my case la.

japa
one thing for sure is... try not to feed directly from the tiger jar. porridge kept in it(esp if cooked not too long ago) are very hot. even when u pour out, still hv to let the porridge cool down a while before can feed.

totally can understand how you feel. but i do agree that must close 1 eye (sometimes both eyes) when we can't be there to take care ourselves... be it family members or IFC. Only difference is one is related while the other is not. the ladies here hv hear how much i complained previously. I've also learnt to let go now n not be so uptight, if not, will get high blood pressure. as long as my baby is happy, eats n sleeps well and not harmed in anyway, i just let her do what she wants.

mashy
i totally agree with you. i'm also very relaxed with my girl compared with #1. pacifier... used to sterilise every night for #1. now i don't do so. only when i happen to sterilise bottles and she's not using it and provided i remember, then i do it. anyway sometimes she drops and she picks up herself and put in her mouth, also too late to wash too.
when u mention yest that she finally fell off the bed, i know what you mean... hahaha.

re: Caretaker
Though MR is my #1, I also don't bother checking about details ofhow my aunt takes care of here. Cos my cousin taken care by here turned out to be a wonderfully behaved girl, healthy & cheerful.

I'm more anal about how her grandparents handle her cos they only see her once a week (can spoil here - dun need to deal with the consequences on a daily basis)
Last weekend, I had to warn my mum to stop teasing MR by bring adults snacks to her mouth ~ cos I know she would be tempted to test water by feeding MR when I'm not looking.
Then had to get the husband to talk to mil cos mil was teaching MR to use her toy to hit on glass display pannel and to pull on necklaces.
Though I know many people say 'close one eye', but sometimes have to make a firmer stand so people won't 'test water' then push you into the water.....

re: signing
it ink i FINALy found out WHy edna do the milk sign when im feeding her cereal/porridge...
ironically she is not askin for milk or food!!
she is askign emt o sing her a song.. or rather i tink specifically twinkle twinkle...!!!!
i accidentally found out today cos at the end of class they do the twinkle twinkle song n she did the "sign"!! so during lunch time i tested out..when she sign 'milk' i sing twinkle twinkle.. she stop signing.. when i stop half way..she sign AGAIN
i told my dh bout it and he say its nonsense.. he say wat hav milk sign gotta do w that song?!?!? and i told him its not the milk sign tat is related to the song.. its the action when i sing to her everytime! i will do the twinkle twinkle sign!!!!!!

lamagier
aiyo.. why she teaches her to knock things. sometimes really don't understand why old ppl like to test water at times. they find it cute?

close 1 eye doesn't mean to everything. if baby is learning all the wrong things, or eating all the wrong things, definitely must say.

bbethan,
I don't know. She sometimes does funny things. Sigh. I get dh to talk to her when I see the need, but I try not to do it too often as nobody likes being caught between spouse and mother.

Josephine,
What colour are the First Few Years spoon? Someone gave me the Combi spoon but I don't use it because it is not BPA free. So I'm using the Pigeon spoon but it doesn't have a cover, but if the First Few Years spoon can fit in the Combi cover, then I might get them. I bought the Munchkin BPA free ones but the spoon is a little to wide for my bb.

Caretaker:
Totally agree that must close one eye when others are looking after our bb. You cannot expect the same standards. They will do some things better than you and some things not so good. I always just tell myself that they don't know any better and that they love him, no matter what. BUT I know for a fact that I will def be more uptight if my ILs were in Sin. They are totally different. They will let bb cry for out and I cannot do that for more than 10 - 20mins (max! and even then already super stressed! ) When my bb was 4 mths old, my SIL's best friend came to visit and gave him ice cream! I was like shocked and a bit irritated but then I told myself...she has 3 boys, all of whom are lovely and she def won't poison my bb!

mashy - Wise words!!! :) For me, I know that pp are more careful with No1, but knowing it in your head and doing it is different!! LOL!

hbb,
Edna loves pp to sing to her. She kinda stops and listens every time!

hbb
u noe, my nana also!! she has been doing the twinkle twinkly lil star action since sun after i taught her, but i realised, she does that to EVERY OTHER song... wahahhaha... faintz!

yippeeee... i'm so happy, she's finally gone to bed @ 1045pm (not early i noe) but since donkey months ago, she has been sleeping @ 12+am earliest! Put her into the rm at 945pm & she slept at 1045pm. Very contented liaoz. Hahaha!

Alamak!! As i'm typing this, i heard her cries! Faintzzzzzzz

Chiyojade, they come in various colours. Think 7 or 8 pcs. Red, blue, green etc. I hv spare. Can mail 1 to you to try if you like
happy.gif
Is BPA free factor really so important to you? Hm... I don't really care that much abt it so all the BPA free products I hv are by chance, not delibrate.

RE: Hiccups
I wonder why the older generation like to associate this with "not enough water". Just this afternoon my father was here and XY hiccuped. As usual he said not enough water, quick drink some water. I nearly wanted to correct him but decided to stop myself to avoid him giving me those "oh" face like the other day I was telling him no peanuts and egg white the kind of face he gave till I don't feel like continuing myself about WHY so. And today I updated him how much XY loves fish porridge. Yes she loves it so much that she laughs happily when eating it. Even if the porridge smells super fishy to me (I'm very picky) she still loves it soooo much. Then my father keep probing "huh, you put salt or soya sauce or not?" like XY very poor thing eat food without taste. Naturally I replied NO. Then again those kind of dubious face so I stressed that fish, chinese herbs and veggies hv taste so no need for any seasoning. Of course he was very questionable again but I continued by explaining abt the kidney functions not fully develop and to induce good eating habits which he prob not very believe haha. I really hope I will not be the kind mother who will say "last time I also raised you up like this, also like that grow up".

RE: Older generation
My hubby's family keeps a dog. Not the most friendliest dog and I certainly hated it quite a bit all the while. Those few times when we were at MIL's place, I noticed that she likes to carry XY "hanging" and kick the dog or say ride the dog. Makes me very fed up so I will teach XY "dog dog your friend, cannot kick" and use her hands to touch the dog. The ride part I don't know how to counter yet. I do say softly to hubby and he just keep quiet cuz I think he also dislike this action but he cannot bring himself to defy his mum. Seriously what was she thinking when she teaches XY to kick and ride the dog??? Angry!

Josephine,
Yes, I ONLY use BPA free products. :p
Will let you know if I need the spoon. Many thanks for the offer. I have one spoon and I guess that is all I need for now...? Until I lose it! LOL!!

Hiccoughs:
Yeah...when my bb did that a lot in the beginning, my mum would also make comments, etc, etc...so when I did get her to go with me to the PD a few times and let her ask all questions she wanted and with hiccoughs, PD said that it'll go away by itself; after all, bb also did that in womb and you didn't let it drink water, right?! Hahaha, she had nothing to say after that. But honestly, I have to say that my mum just didn't know any better, so next time when pp told her about hiccoughs, she actually told others nonchantly, I might add (!): Just leave it alone, it'll go away. Like as though she knew it all along! Hahahahahahaha...

Dog:
DO NOT let bb kick the dog whenever you are there and pls try to get dh to tell his MIL not to do that. Many gentle dogs have turned round and nipped babies and then pp say, "How come? He was so gentle...etc, etc, etc." I feel like telling then, "Come, I kick you/pull your hair..." see if you will not react!?! Hahahaha. I have a dog and I watch bb and dog VERY closely when they play together, esp making sure that bb doesn't grab dog's hair! Even my PD told me to be careful about that - and I can totally understand why.

hbb, edna so clever...izit learn from jg? is there a baby sign language class??? hehehe, i might be interested.

chiyojade, same same like u, during chinese new year visiting my friend's house, i turn away a few minutes, i thought my friend feeding water to my baby, turn out she is feeding manuka honey...omg, at that time i wanted to scream but thinking she has 2 boys, i dun think she will harm baby lah. i'm just afraid of allergies...

Chiyojade, np just PM me your add I will send it
happy.gif

How do you know if combi spoon is not BPA free? I see the spoon and bowl are the "blur" kind of plastic so I assumed they are. And I thought only clear plastic (PC) is BPA. Pls enlighten me.

Hiccoughs, I will not make anymore comments. Let them feed XY with water if they like. Not as if after my explanation they will understand? Especially to the maid mostly she won't listen. Is like that one. Been with my family abt 14yrs so got own judgement. I don't wanna say too much la.

RE: Dog
I am not so concerned abt dog biting or scratching XY. My first reaction was how can teach the baby who knows nothing that it is alright to kick small animals??? So in future she might just beat or pinch any small animals and think it's right. Seriously I dunno why mil did it. Ok now that you mentioned abt gentle nipping at babies, I will be careful of it. Hubby's dog is quite dumb and unfriendly. Ya dumb is the word cuz he cannot understand ANY commands and if someone left the metal gate open, he will just dash out, dunno how to return back. Don't even respond when you call the name. So not fun to play with and always barking ard like nobody's biz and scratching, biting anything it sees. That's why I dislike it so much but then I hv to pretend to like it to show XY "dog dog is your fren".

I tend to avoid using non-bpafree materials for feeding as well, especially when dealing with hot foods/liquids. I have been actually using glass bottles from Pigeon, less of my plastic bottles for quite some time now since 4 months. I worry that J throws the bottle sometimes, but she hasn't damaged any of her glass bottles yet so far.

BPA, is a xenoxenoestrogen by binding strongly to estrogen-related receptor γ, is linked to pre-disposal of cells to hormones and carcinogens, hence higher chances of cancer in breast cells, prostate, testicular cells, disrupts ovarian development etc. Read more at http://healthychild.org/live-health/faq/bisphenol_a_or_bpa1, and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bisphenol_A.

With child safety involved, most of us rather be safe than sorry. After all, we are bound to use certain plastics over time in our lives, if you could reduce exposure, why not?

How to tell? Look for the recycling symbol. Steer clear of numbers 3, 6 and 7. Numbers 1, 2, 4 and 5 are said to be safer. The type of plastic bottle in which water is usually sold is usually a #1, and is only recommended for one time use. Do not refill it. But the recycling codes are just a relation to the type of polymer being molded into plastics, and is still debated.

With the spoon issue, yar, I would also agree to stick to BPA-free spoons, if worse case, no spoon available, ceramic (make sure not cracked/chipped) or metal spoons (make sure food is cooled down). BTW, if your family frequent drinking soups, avoid using plastics to drink hot soups too.

hehe, no worries, TJE. Very hard to explain why need to use bpa-free without explaining BPA. I read the plastics code type, very long time back, was trying very hard to remember which ones are safe lately. Yar, sometimes no choice, I do forget bringing spoon with me a few times, after I washed it and left it to dry and didn't put it back into my bag. Once in a while okay lar, otherwise our bag full of spare stuff already.

SOS SOS - can someone give me tel. no. of reliable part time helper to clean house ? my housekeeping maid ran off this morning. chaos at home ! thanks

gina

i'm not glad that she fell off the bed lah. It's just one of those things that will eventually happen no matter how hard u try to prevent it. It's just like being sick. U may wanna prevent her from getting sick, but she will still fall sick despite your best efforts.

Sunsweet, bbethan, Peanut

All the fish are from my supplier. They direct import.

Unagi is frozen already. So when you reach home just put into the top fridge to frozen can already. When you want to eat, just mircoware or steam together with the rice. Very simply, fast dish when you have no time to prepare food for your family.

Snow fish fillet - You Gan Yu
This is not Cod fish, i just check with my supplier, she will let me know how much is the cod fish cost then i inform you gals

re : c-sec

mashy/sunsweet/bbethan/kim............

i always wanted to ask..... yes redness. but do you all still feel pain? i do. but not to the extend it will affet my daily life. but i do feel the pain for instance when i lean against the basin to brush teeth or washing dishes. in fact i went to my gynae quite recently. i was told my wound still very active. that's y still red & swollen.
sad.gif

twinkle

ya, i feel pain sometimes. also itchy. Red too. 1 section heal nicely. the other side red and swollen. think keloid forming on that side.
sad.gif

BbEthan, yes visible but no pain. Don't know how true but the morning after my op, the nurses were telling me my gynae's patient all not feel painful and don't need painkillers. During the morning visit my gyane hao lian to me all his patients don't need painkillers. I didn't leave it to chance. I popped the pills before the pain came. In fact i could stand up and walk out of the room the morning after my op.

How does keloid look like? Did you girls paste the silicon plaster on the wound? I was advised to do so too minimise the scarring. Not sure if it worked though and I wasn't very disciplined to paste it after every bath time.
