Wau, today everyone talking about maid. There is no you can stop them from getting to know friends. Unless you "locked" you maid 24/7 at homes.
Think of it this way, they are all alone working in Singapore. Maids are also human too. Think about if you are posted overseas, I guess you would also be looking around for Singaporeans to make friends with.
A few things we stick to:
1. We never give our maids handphone. Why is there a need in the 1st place. Instead I gave them a $10 international calling card instead every month for them to keep in touch with their families. If they need more, its from their own pockets. Giving handphones would only result in unnecessary SMS/Phone calls during working hours. Normally they will claim that they only use it after work late at night, my question is, should't you be resting instead.
2. Never treat them like an outsider, treat them as part of your family, a helper within. Once this is done, you don't have to worry about them comparing salaries. I don't pay my maids "TOP" wages, but at least we know we treat them well enough in other aspect. There is never a end to wages comparison.
3. Treat them with respect, and they will respect you as well. I always ensure that my nephew call them auntie XXX instead of just their name to give them the due respect.
4. Last but not least, while a work schedule is important, you must clearly tell them what is the priorities in their work. We have always tell them, the kids are the top priorites, housework etc can wait, or even be a bit sub standard. Just in case there is a conflict of interest during work, she knows what to do.
Wau...very long post, hope no one gets bored. Oh ya, for any daddies or mummies who think maid will solve every housework n chores, pls think again. At times, we also still have to bath the kids, changes the pampers etc. So no siam and chao keng and claim maid is there. Hahahaha....wau, alot of daddies going to kill me for this.
