(2005/08) Aug/Sept 05' MTBs

Hi mashy brainz, miso,
What's in the goodies bags? Is it worth the effort to go lower delta road to collect it? If want to ask from TMC, which counter shld I ask for it? Thanks.

Hi Anissa Low,
Ya I was given priority during my visit to Polyclinic. Waited about 15min for each 'room' that we had to go. But waited for almost ONE hour at the 'appt and payment' last station... Din know that bb can have priority and stupidly waited until really can't tahan then hubby go request for the counter to give us first. Lucky bb is kuai but was already howling for 10mins in car before reaching home.. Wanted to nurse her in the car yet still pei seh to do so...
Also you in your confinement can go out so often?
Anyway the yellowness seems less obvious so we skip the blood test appt today.

Hi mummytobe,
Ya, it's like what miso described abt the bathing water. We also sun her every morning 5min on her back and 5min her front. She looks less yellow now...

Engorgement:
Anyone knows how to prevent that? I feel my breast swelling with pain if skip 1 feed
sad.gif
But ironically my milk supply is not much... need to supplement with at least 60-90ml FM after 30mins of BF for each feed. Interval range from 2.5 to 3.5hr. Was thinking like that means next time must always bring bb or pump along when go out for long period?!?

Hi wendy, ya.. the voucher is in one of the bags.. I got 2 free goodie bags. Forgot the voucher is in which bag liao. Also got the free goodie bag from Baby Boom.

I also using the Avent Isis. My gal drinks on avg every 2 hrs during day time so need to stand by the ebm b4 she stirs cos she v. impatient type. Too long and she will cry till her face turns purple! walao! If giving fm, then ok cos v. fast ma. My gal same as ur boy leh.. drink FULL FULL can sleep longer hrs.

My gal's skin reddish colour and my cl says she v. bu cos I ate a lot of durians during preggie! wahahaha.. no wonder she's so warm...

Hi anissa, so young u wanna bring her to suck out the phlegms? I wont unless really necessary cos they put tubes via the nostril to the lungs and suck out. Though it's only abt few seconds to a min procedure, but this cannot be done frequently. My gal also got some phlegms which according to the PD is normal lor so unless really necessary and/or it causes discomfort to bb or disrupt her breathing, then I would not advise to suck it out.

Hi cakey, I think since u breastfeed ur gal direct, maybe u need to latch her on more often to empty ur bm. Cos I think engorgement also means ur breasts are not emptied. Maybe can skip the FM and concentrate on giving her full bm.

I dun latch her on direct, I only pump it out. My daily schedule is like this.. pump when I wake up arnd 7.30 - 8 am, pump after lunch, pump after dinner, pump b4 gg to sleep. Then in between I dun pump till the next morning. Still ok, not much engorgement, just feel full. Each time I can only express abt 100 ml for now. hee.. maybe not much bm.

mayday,
Rohaya will cover u with a towel during the massage. When I'm allowed to bathe, I do so before she comes and I usually will keep the binder on for about 22 hrs (i.e 1-2 hrs b4 she comes the next day).

cat_tail,
Baby Kingdom got 15% discount for Philips bb monitor? Got sample to try somemore, so good. Their store is at Kaki Bukit, right?

I got mine at Baby's Hyperstore and they gave me a 20% discount but mine is the highest end and it has a range of 350m and 120 channels and there is no way of any interference. You can even talk to ur child or play lullaby from ur monitor before u go to your child. I think it is more useful if you have a 2 storey house ie if you are on the first floor and the baby is in his room. It costs SGD239 after discount but it is the best selling monitor in baby HyperStore, you can go to baby kingdom to compare since they are just beside each other.

BTW, I did not pay for it as it is a baby shower gift from my friends

hi ixwong, for his fussiness during feeding time, i really have no clue, cos he can be happily suckling for 10 min then suddenly pull away n cry, before searching for the nipple again fervently.

wendy, for night time fussing i was also coming to the same conclusion... maybe also bcos at night i was too tired to make sure he's totally full... so long as he drifts off to sleep i put him back to bed... gotta try the full feeding method tonight... meaning got to take nap soon...
happy.gif

wendyg, I wanted to know how your experience with c-section with epidural was. This is because I may have to go for c-section as my baby is in breech position. Gynae was asking me to decide between c-section with GA or epidural.

Aidanee, congrats to you for Cayden's arrival!

christina ...

me just rec the msg from her too ... was abt to announce the good news here ....

in fact i msg her in the noon to ask her how was her visit to her gynae yest ... she didnt reply for very long and i was wondering if she has popped ... true enough she has ...

so happy for her ... getting more and more impatient myself ....

Congrats Aidanee!

Hi ixwong,
Sorry for the wrong info. The one I check is Baby Hyperstore not Baby Kingdom. Wow! They give u 20% discount, better than mine!

Hi triniti,
Thanks for sharing. May I know does it comes with rechargeable batteries?

Hi all mummies,
I just wanna find out how u all cope with colic? My gal seems to develop it & it happens almost every evening for hours.. not easy to handle.

Hi wendy,
oh you are referring to the ameda dual lactaline? yup, i'm using that now. I think its quite good leh! so much better than the medela mini electric...the ameda one doesn't hurt my ears and breasts as much. What didn;t you like about it?

One thing though, i dunno how to use both pumps at the same time. Cause have to hold both pumps, where got hand to switch on and off the machine? also, i tend to adjust the pump around various parts of the breast to get milk out from the different milk ducts; very hard to do so when juggling with two pumps at the same time. how did you use both pumps lei? any advice?

Hi Cakey,
ya lor, me have to pump every 3-4 hours..any longer than that, my breasts will become hard, lumpy and painful. So if go out, must pump before going out. If going out long long, think must bring along a manual or battery operated pump and pump somewhere...i pump about six times a day..about 30-45 mins each session to empty both breasts

Hi Miso, wendy,
Avent isis is it the manual pump? i got also leh, but i think not very good leh..pump very tiring lei..i stopped after one or two use (when milk flow still just coming in). haven't tried it since..is it really that good? maybe i can use it or bring it along when i go out for more than a few hours just in case need to express outside
happy.gif

Congrats Angel, Aidanee!

Cakey,

Actually if you are not collecting medication, there is no need to queue up to make payment. Just go to the counter and let the lady know you wanna make payment. Hope this helps
happy.gif

Yeah, I do go out during confinement. In fact, I have washed my hair a few times and take shower every day (cold water). Can't tahan the heat.

cmy,

The sound is quite loud. Esp. during feeding. When they are born, the hospital will immediately stick this tube to suck out the mucus. Could it be there are still some left inside?? Initially I thought he has asthma ...

Congrats Aidanee!

Those mummies who breastfeed their baby ... does your baby tilt his/her head one side with mouth wide open when he/she is hungry? Mine does and I find it very embarrassing when taking him out. It doesn't matter who carry him, he is always opening his mouth and wanna latch on that person's breast ...

hi gals

I'm back home. Here's my birth story

10 Aug (Wed) - Attended antenatal class with christina and snoopy. Had irregular contraction from 7 to 9pm. Called gynae, asked to go down to hospital for observation. Didn't go down in the end as contractions went away after I had dinner and showered.

22 Aug (Mon) - Went toilet and saw slight brownish stain. Had light stain ONLY in the morning (strange!!!) until Fri.

26 Aug (Fri) - Played mj from 2pm to 2am. Had menstrual cramps the whole time. Ignored due to previous false contraction episode. Menses-like stain became heavier and last throughout the day

27 Aug (Sat) - Heavy stain last throughout the day. Feels menstrual cramp every now and then. Went to husband's Malay staff wedding.

28 Aug (Sun) - Heavy stain stopped completely after lunch (another strange thing). Attended husband's secretary's son full month celebration. Experience painful menstrual cramps and irregular contractions

29 Aug (Mon) 6pm - Woke up went toilet, had terrible menses cramp and backache. Went toilet every 45 mins and thought something is not right

29 Aug (Mon) 8.30pm - Woke husband to go to work. As he is in the shower, felt that it's time to go to hospital. Tried to time contractions but still irregular. sometimes once in 5 minutes, sometimes once in 8 minutes, then once in 4 minutes

29 Aug (Mon) 9am - Called gynae. He said what I have last Fri is the Show although muscuous plug did not come out. Doc told me that I am having early labour symptoms, ask me to admit after lunch

29 Aug (Mon) 9am to 2pm - Showered, went for lunch. Reached hospital about 1+pm. Changed and wait for gynae to arrive (he has morning clinic in Raffles Tampines)

29 Aug (Mon) 3pm - Doc arrived, already dilated 3cm and break waterbag. Doc did not give me any drug to hasten contractions and estimate I should deliver by 10pm.

29 Aug (Mon) 4pm - Contractions once every 5 mins, cannot take pain, ask for epi. Epi administered within 15 mins, relieved!!!

29 Aug (Mon)6pm - Dilated only to 4cm!!!!

29 Aug (Mon) 10pm - Doc came and dilated only 5-6cm!!! Given drugs to hasten contractions and said I should deliver by 2am

30 Aug (Tues) 12am - Contractions still not as regular as preferred.. so up dosage of drugs.

30 Aug (Tues) 2pm - Start feeling contractions even though on epi but bearable. Up epi dosage to 15. Once up to 15, felt nauseous and shivers badly so request to reduce to 11 but felt a little contractions. Slept from 2pm to 3pm

30 Aug (Tues) 3pm - Felt very very painful contractions even on epi. Up epi to 13, felt a little nauseous and shiver a little. Choose pain over shivering. Into 4th syringe of epidural.

30 Aug (Tues) 4pm - Fully dilated but in a lot of pain. Gynae arrived at 4+am w/o nurse having to call him. He was wondering why nurse did not call him and he said he couldn't sleep well the whole night.

30 Aug (Tues) 4.40pm - Doc insert vacuum and started pushing. Pushed and pushed and pushed, baby doesn't want to move. Contractions every 5 minutes but not frequent enough. After 45minutes of pushing, bb head crowned and gynae saw that all the while, he's been vacuuming the amniotic band (rare condition which I have) which is covering the baby's head causin baby to be in OP position. He cut open the band and we pushed for another 15 minutes and at 5.48am baby Megan finally arrived!!!

Due to long labour and the stress of pushing for so many hours, baby Megan is extremely distressed and not breathing and looked pale when born. After only about 2 minutes of suckling out of muscous from nose, mouth and stimulation by touch and oxygen, finally I heard a loud wail.

Doctor Veronica Toh, head paediatrician in Raffles Hospital ran a couple of blood test and found higher white blood count of 29 (normal is between 10 to 20) and put her in NICU. Not breathing for a minutes or two can cause serious complications for the baby and naturally me and my husband were very worried.

Megan was put on antibiotic jab and glucose drip to hydrate her. I couldn't breastfeed until yesterday. Was glad that doctor said she is now out of the woods but she developed jaundice yesterday and today the reading is 16.6, quite high. Normal is under 10. Therefore, I discharged today without Megan.

My milk production is also terrible, can only squeeze out one or two drops of colostrum. I've been pumping using PIS every 3-4 hours for 15 minutes on each breast.. still no improvement. I really hope I can breastfeed my gal but I may not succeed. Doctor gave me some medication to increase my milk flow .. so far still not working yet

Also, I've developed serious water retention after birth. My weight now and before giving birth is the same!!!! My face and feet looks more swollen then during preggie period.

Maybe I pushed too hard during delivery processw and injured my urinary muscles.. I leaked urine now when I cough or when I remove my sanitary pad when I was only inches away from the toilet bowl.

I really regretted not choosing elective c-section. If I had, baby Megan will not need to suffer due to distress. I will opt for elective c-sec for my future babies even though it means I will suffer more pain after surgery. It's simply not worth it when I see my gal suffering or potentially have health problems in the future.

Think I am developing post natal blues... even typing out my birth story makes me cry.

hi angel, megan looks healthy... she'll be home with u soon..
happy.gif

dun worry too much about ur milk production. We also experienced the first few days of pathetic milk supply. Try to hydrate urself well in the meantime.

though we may ask a lot of "what ifs" when things dun happen the way we want, i believe we have made the best decision available at that time.. dun blame urself too much.. jaundice is a v common problem with babies. megan will recover v soon.
happy.gif

angel ...

you are back!!

dun worry abt ur little gal ... she will be fine ... very sweet baby ... like her eyes alot ...

meanwhile you take good care of yourself oso ... dun worry abt your milk ... i am sure with your determination it will come about one =)

Hi Angel,
yr bb gal is cute! and looks well! It's not your fault that you din choose c-sect cos everything is so unpredictable and everyone's different. So please don't feel so much regret but focus on getting well to care for yr bb.
At times, I also regret choosing c-sect instead of trying for natural birth when reading other's success birth story.. but I try not to think so cos who knows what'll happen if I choose the other way? It's ok to bf a little bit later. Me too din bf soon cos wound still hurt.. but now i got so much chances to bf till I also tire hehe...
It's natural to feel blue.. but need to tell yrself to stop 'thinking' abt it lor.. For my case, I tink i've gotten over my blues already..

Angel: Congrats! Megan is so sweet. She will be alright!

As for bm, today is only your 2nd day, so it's normal to hv only a few drops. Latch megan on ur breasts when she's back and it will stimulate the milk flow. As for the urinary muscles, u can do the pelvic exercise later on when u r completely healed, it will help. Please do not think too much and dun cry ok? U can chat with us here or msn to share ur worries, woes etc.. we are here to help each other! *hugs*

Hi anissa, it's very normal for bbs to tilt their head to the side with mouth open seeking milk when they are hungry. Not only breastfed babies are lidat, even bottlefed babies do tt too, it's their only way of telling you that they are hungry. Cute hor?! hee..

Hi mummytobe, I have been using Avent Isis till now and so far ok. My friends all suggested manual pump is btr cos our nipples are not so sore and can stimulate milk flow btr. One of my friends use Avent Isis and pump out 9 oz of ebm! so amazing! Me only managed to pump out 100 ml of ebm, ie. 3.5 oz. *duh*

hello gals

angel - Congrats to u. Yo! Bb megan is so cute n lovely. (she's a cheerful gal) Dont worry n rest well yeah!

gals - Can i ask whether wat sort of bb stuff should i buy first. (i've no experience n stuck now) Yesterday i went to kid's mall n saw those breast pump (electric n manual) which brand is good ah?

Hi, mummies...i am from the Nov MTBS...can i ask those just delivered at TMC...what will they provide when mummy and baby discharge. Coz i heard from shomwhere that they will give baby bath tub and some other free gifts...just need to confirm then will start shopping baby stuff. Thank you!

Hi Angel
I really admire your strength and I am sure you will get through this cos all of us are supporting you all the way!!It is true that being a mummy is the greatest cos we only want to have the best for the baby...and Megan seems to be adjusting well
happy.gif

All the best and hope to see you active in this thread again.

Angel,

Congrats! Baby Megan looks really adorable. Can tell she will have beautiful, big eyes. And she already knows how to smile 4 hrs after birth! I am sure she will be one happy baby

Hi cat_tail, U can log in to www.babycenter.com to find out the ways to cope with colic in babies. Usually they will just disappear when they reach the 3rd mth. Alternatively, u can try Gripe Water or Infacol, these helps to get rid of excess wind in bb. Last but not least, u and ur hb must be mentally sane to help ur bb. It can be v. tiring for the both of u, I hv been there once, but try to understand that ur bb needs u and hb at this time. Take care.

Hey angel, baby megan looks absolutely adorable! Chin up ok? Don't feel down.....we are all here to support you. Don't feel down about your milk production ok? It takes time to simulate your milk flow. Don't give up!

As for what could have been (about choosing elective c-section), none of us can predict the future, that includes you! So don't feel that you have short-changed baby Megan by not choosing elective c-section. I feel that as long as baby Megan can feel how much you love her, that's all that would matter to her.

Hi ladies, I suspect my bb gal has got reflux. Dunno what I should do, monitoring her these few days and see how. I got this from babycenter.com.. here goes:

2. Gastroesophageal reflux
Does your baby cry after feedings? He could have gastroesophageal reflux. When a baby with this condition eats, food backs up into his throat, irritating the lining of his esophagus. This condition is painful; the sensation is akin to heartburn in adults.

Most doctors have an easier time diagnosing gastroesophageal reflux than other causes of stomachaches because babies with this problem act in a similar manner: Voraciously hungry, they latch onto the breast or bottle and suck for 15 or 20 seconds, then arch their back, pull away, and begin to scream. The arching and screaming begin when the reflux starts.

Angel, congrats!

Dun worry so much abt breastfeeding, I was quite stressed also during the first few days. Felt guilty after I gave in to supplementing with FM. But my bb has jaundice too and needs more hydration. My BM only started to come in after a few days and even then amt was pathetic. 2 weeks later now, things are getting better. can pump 80-90ml per 3-hr, but then still not enough to feed my boi, so still have to supplement.

Water retention. Mine was also v bad...face & feet swollen but started to subside after taking confinement food + massage. So no worry.

The urine leakage is normal according to my gynae. I suffered from it too but it will get better as your body heals. remember to do your kegel exercises...

Dun think too much, ok?

Chris,
TMC will provide everything bb needs which include clothing, a pkt of pampers NB and J&J wipes. Whatever remains from the hospital stay, you can bring back. No bathtub (that's Mt A). For mummy, they will only give 2 mesh underwears and 1 pkt of pads, so u will need to prepare your own pads & panties.

hi miso, reflux sounds like what my boi is having too.. but it doesn't happen everytime.. can't remember whether his back was arched, but his legs will curl up (like being tensed), shows fustration then cry out.. after split second, want to go back to feeding again... same as urs?

hi tingting,
My bb also pull away abt 10min after sucking with milk dripping out somemore.. and later will search hastily for nipple again. I realise she suck too much wind and just burp her will do. Also sometime it's because she sucks too hard and need to rest a while.

hi mummytobe,
I also realise my breast timing is about 3hr.. So far I only manage to pump 10ml for 1/2 hr using the mini-elect one. Peifu you girls faithful mum (like u & miso) can pump and bf so deligently. Feel quite wasted if go buy another manual pump and worst if ended up the same..

Hi Anissa Low,
I see.. that time we need appt. so must wait for the appt. counter. Now I recall when hubby approaching e counter, this woman in 'ah ma' uniform just snatch the file from him and others and quickly submit.. maybe that's why they din notice our case is new born. Now I know got priority, will definitely remind them.

HI snoopy,
Just to share with you I've c-sect spinal and I think it's ok. It's similar to epidural except that less needle poke and slightly more exp. The scary part is laying on the bed and being wheeled around. Also when administrating the jab at the spine you need to curl up alot. Ask the nurse to help you and hold you so that you won't move. As you're awake, try to ask dr questions during the op to keep yr mind occupy. Before long, your hubby will come in and you can chat w him also..
After a while they will push the bb out.. one dr from the chest side and the other dr will take bb out from the tummy side. Just imagine the dr's pushing at your chest to be like labour pushing and then you won't be scare. after abt 3, 4 push the bb is out
happy.gif

GA tends to have more nausea effect and you don't get to see your bb once it's out.

From wat I know usually dr prefer spinal then epid. Epid is used when need to add/decrease the the dosage (c-sect dun need). But again, usually they also call spinal as 'epidural'.

hi cakey, sometimes it's due to wind, but not all the time... btw, i'm really lousy at burping baby... any effective methods of burping to share?

Hi ting ting and cakey, my gal will suck at the bottle fervently as if v. hungry and after few seconds will pull out and cry and/or make angry noises. Then my cl will try to talk to her to soothe her then give her the bottle again, then she will suck again. The other nite, half way thru feeding, she made noise and then my cl rub her chest and a while later, she vomitted out the milk. Just now when I observe her during milk feeding, she's ok leh, din cry and/or make noise, cl says sometimes she will, sometimes not lor and hor, if too hot, she will also make noise! aiyo.. my gal same like me, scared heat. cl also says I ate too much durian liao tt's y my gal is v. bu. She's got rosy cheeks leh.. so cute.

Well, sometimes hard to know / determine if they are suffering from reflux, colic or lactose intolerance. haiz.. must observe more.

Tingting, me also v. lousy at burping. The best is if they let out a big burp as u carry them up after feeding! hahaha.. I know my hb will move bb in circular motion for few seconds then try to burp again, it usually works.

Hi cakey, I intend to stop pumping maybe a day or two before my gal's full mth. If you need a manual Avent Isis, I can lend it to u. No need to paiseh.. hehe.. of cos provided u dun mind a 2nd hand.

hi tingting, miso,
I don't have any special burping method cos my bb easy to burp one hehe... but occasionally when she sleep liao then cl will hold her straight resting her head on her shoulder and burp. This way she can cont to sleep while being burp.

miso,
Why you stop pumping? Appreciate if i could borrow the pump from you to try before investing in another pump.. cos i know got flow but just can't get milk using the elect pump. You can pm me when not using it liao and I'll get my hubby to collect
happy.gif

Now lunchtime.. finally a change today eating bread with fried egg hehe.. cos the bread expiring soon so request to Cl to have bread instead of the usual confinemt food (kidney, meat etc...).

Hi guys

how are u all doing? my gal sick ah.. so these 2 days taking care of her.. i was just wondering..what if one day one fall sick after another.. wahlau.. that will be very tough on me!

Miso, do u mean u are stopping BF? or u store enuf liao?

i checked with my gp on fenugeek. she said best not to eat such stuff.. just try to let bb suckle more.

hi chris, TMC provides toiletries for mum. for bb, they get a pack of pampers, wet tissues, cord spirit and 2 goodies bag with loads of reading materials as well as samples like johnson &johnson, diaper cream, vouchers for diaper disct etc

Cheer up angel,
It's not your fault & u did a great job of delivering sweet Megan. Such things are beyond your control so dun ponder abt it anymore. What's most imp is your little one is out of the blue now. Be brave & positive ok? Megan needs u now & in no time, she will join u back home soon.
happy.gif
In the meantime, try to do some pelvic floor exercise to strengthen your muscle. Jia you, we will be here to support u!

Hi Anissa,
My gal oso do tat! She will shake her head frantically looking for nipple even to her dad, ah gong, ah ma.... So pai sek~

Hi miso,
Thanks for replying. The gripe water or Infacol can get easily from pharmacy?

Hi cakey, no prob, I will inform u once I stopped so u can ask ur hb to come and collect. Re. burping, my cl does the same as urs too.

Hi tulip, hope ur gal is ok now. U must have more rest too k! Ya.. me stopping.. din managed to store any leh.. cos only pump 4 times a day and usually will use up on tt day itself liao. Not much milk la.. only abt 100 ml each time.. how to store? haha..

Hi all,

Would like to check if it is possible for a one- week-old baby to develop fever? They keep telling me babies this young don't get fever. How true is it?

HI Angel,
Congrats! Your baby looks healthy and happy!! she looks big too! how heavy is she? btw, did your gynae previously advise you to go for c-section or left the choice up to you?

HI Miso,
Is it?! Avent isis can pump so much? let me go and try hehe... ya electric pump is more 'rough' on the breast. Especially the medela electric. wah lau...

Btw, how do you stop BF? the milk will keep coming out right? if don't bf or express out, won't it be extremely painful?

Re: expression
Few days ago, i developed fever because of a slight breast infection (early stages of mastitis ) because gynae said i was not expressing frequently enough or draining the breast completely. Heard must pump until no more milk come out..previously, i pump 20 mins (5min on each breast alternate) then stop liao..now, to pump until 'dry' takes me almost 45 mins. and i find one side got more than the other...for mummies who express their breast milk, do you get equal amounts on both side or do they tend to differ? i'm worried my breasts might end up uneven size leh...now mastitis ok liao cause on antibiotics and follow gynae's advice

Hi mummytobe,
U can stop BF either by prescriptive drug (the fastest but not advisable cos we dun noe any side effects) or natural way by reducing the stimulation, wear tight bras & keep putting on cold cabbage.

Oh, btw, wanna ask abt full-mth celebration. Any idea where I can hold it? Cos both sides of our families are quite big, dun think we can have it at home. Wanna do it at my in-laws' condo but the management said we can only book one session
sad.gif
We actually want 2 sessions; one in the afternoon for my side and one in the evening for my in-laws' side.

Any suggestions??
