(2003) Calling all 2003 babies

Hi Sarah!

I was tormented to tears that I couldn't clean the apartment the way I'd like to when I first arrived in Frankfurt last year. Finally, I decided to get a cleaning lady to come in. And I just do another round of vacuuming and mopping myself. That's about it! Cleaniness level has dropped... drastically, with two kids. Anyway, I still have to clean almost every time after dinner... coz my son keeps "littering" food all over as he attempts to feed himself. But I take comfort that germs will make my children more resistant to illnesses.
happy.gif

A friend of mine introduced me to Gina Ford's CLB routine. It's really good. Well, I did not follow it religiously, but adapted it to suit my daughter and it's quite easy with her. She's usually a happy baby.

And getting the kids to nap is good! It allows me time to rest, cook and clean... Bryan still naps in the afternoon, although most of his ang-moh friends have drop the afternoon nap altogether and go to bed as early as 7pm. But I'm happy that he naps two hours in the afternoon and still goes to bed at 9-ish.

But my routine is quite flexi. e.g. There will be times I'd feel up to shopping or paying the zoo a visit or enjoying a slice of cake when the weather is good or whatsoever and the kids will just come along. They adapt real well... but I try not to make it an everyday affair.

As for breakfast, I try to give Bryan French toast. I find it best to use brioche bread coz it's already sweetened on its own.

Have you tried pancakes?
My simple recipe:
200g breadflour, 100g sugar (or less), 3 eggs, 100ml milk, 1 tsp baking powder and batter it up. Then pan-fry the batter by batches. It's a good family portion. Add a little cinnamon for a change sometimes.

How about cha siew bao? We miss that here.

Hi Lena!

Thanks for the tip regarding Kipper. I remember Bryan was watching a trailer of Kipper once. He looked pretty drawn to it. But it's difficult to get Eng VCDs here and Amazon will sell overly priced DVDs. So that will be on our shopping list when we go back to Singapore the next time.

Hi Mommies!

Have you tried sports with your children?

e.g. kicking ball, throwing rugby, race them, making airplane and run in a figure of 8, hopping, skipping, waddling etc?

Can anyone share on what works?

I have some fun running with my son when the weather is good. And yesterday, it was the first time he saw me doing cartwheels... and he tried to imitate too... It was quite funny watching him do his version of cartwheel.

Hi sarah,

I wish I can be like you, able to have the house mop daily, but i can only afford paper mop. Me 2 kids, always fighting, so cant really do anything major.

that one and a half hr that they nap, i can only manage to prepare dinner ... and on weekends, hubby nap with them, so i hardly have time to do mopping and washing toilet .. sorry if it sounds very gross .. but luckily my mother helps me on weekdays with the kids, so she help me with maintaining one toilet, and she mop the floor for me at times

Wish I can do more.

kristins_mom,

Have you tried shopping at amazon.co.uk? Sometimes, they do offer very good bargain deals. I got the classic collections of Kipper and Percy the Park Keeper DVDs at less than S$30 each. They do carry BBC productions too. Brandon is currently watching Five Children & it and he enjoys it greatly.

The first winter is always the harshest. I recalled that our first winter is, by far, the worst. Just remember to apply moisturising cream diligently on the kids, especially on their faces. Both my kids love applying cream. Beats me, but I really have no idea why. You mentioned that Bryan didn't like it. Could it be the smell of the cream you are using?

Since we have a group of young voracious readers, maybe we can organise some book review sessions? It might be fun for the kids to share their views on a particular book. Just a thought...

Sports wise, we aren't doing anything serious. Brandon's dad thinks 3 years old is too young to be learning to play badminton
sad.gif
I tried introducing him roller blading. Unfortunately, he's not ready for it yet. For a while, he was into cycling every day. But now, he's busy "skating" on his newest addition - scooter.

Bryan certainly knows the landmarks of London well. Is it safe to visit the place now? We went there once in Dec 2003. It felt like home when we were there. But boy, the things are really expensive! Btw, wasn't the summer sales on when you were there in July?

Wow, that's really a nice break to go back to Sg. Most pple won't understand why we look forward to home trips
happy.gif
. I'm really looking forward to my return next year.

Hi Sherlyn,
I'm FTWM with no maid and 2 kids. Weekday will have my dinner at my mums place after that will go back hm, so usually ard 9.30-10pm i'll make them sleep so i can do the hsework and somtime go to bed at 12midnight.

There no endin in household chores ..

Hi Kritins_mum,
I've tried making paper boat, airplane and ball for my son, he played a while after that crushed them.

Sarah,
Trust me, I'm a cleanliness freak too. My neighbour actually commented my house was well kept while looking through the old photos. But since I was pregnant with Cheryl, I gave up trying. As what Sherlyn shared, it gets tougher with 2 kids. Luckily, the place here is not as dusty as Sg. But I'll try to vacuum the place daily though. Btw, does your gal help to vacuum or do housework? Recently, Brandon's into vacuuming. Whenever I get ready to vacuum the floor, Brandon will go, "Let me do it! I can do it!" Find it funny but I do enjoy "lazing" for a while...

Cooking is really not me :p. I love to eat but cooking is totally another matter. As I prefer simple stuff, I usually steam or panfry the food. But for the kids, I'm still cooking separately for them. I prefer pig kidney to liver. Both offer a very high content of iron, especially pig liver. But it's not advisable to take too much b'cos of the high vit A present.

Brandon doesn't take solids early in the morning except for milk. Maybe I should try preparing some porridge for him.

As we stay at home most of the time, our activities can be considered rather "routine".
Not much changes since I can't drive. Btw, both my kids still take naps in the afternoons. But their bedtime stretch beyond 10pm, sometimes even later...

Lena,
Sounds like Melody had a very memorable birthday celebration! I'll certainly try the two places you mentioned. Did Melody get tired from opening her presents? Next year, I can volunteer my son to help with the presents :p

Mooncakes... ha, you have to tempt me, right? Fortunately we do have a mini mooncake celebration here
happy.gif
So, we do get to eat (though not binge) on mooncakes too.

Here are the stories in a Treasury of Curious George:

1 Curious George Takes a Train
2 Curious George Visits a Toy Store
3 Curious George and the Dump Truck
4 Curious George and the Birthday Surprise
5 Curious George Goes Camping
6 Curious George Goes to a Costume Party
7 Curious George Visits the Library
8 Curious George in the Big City

Between the 2 books, Brandon prefers the complete Adventures of Curious George. Does he enjoy it? Well, he made me finished 5 stories in one session just before bedtime. Imagine how tired I was after reading...

Hi Apricot,
I gave up updating the table cos it was becoming meaningless (for me). Some mommies just pop in and disappear after that. Though it isn't difficult, effort and time is still needed to maintain the table. Perhaps, I'll try find a way for interested new mommies to update their data using DIY method...

Serenade,
Taking abt Vacuum Cleaner, i've so long didnt use aready dnt knw still working anot. Usualy will sweep the floor cos at least can hear wat the kids doing. Sweepin is not as clean as vacuum so somtime i'll knee-down usin cloths to clean the floor .
Brandon is so hardworking, dnt u afraid he break sometin and tat makes u even more work to do.

Kristin's_mom,
We have played 'football', bowling, running. I visit the gym and Hannah tags along too. She wants to play something else after a while. Hoping to get her to learn swimming. I just started on yoga and she follows too. She

Lena,
So what did you get for Melody's birthday? Did you pop by Ngee Ann City? There should be some mooncake stalls? I tried Bengawan Sol - didn't like it, too dry. Like Tung Hai best.

Serenade,
Hannah prefers to wash the dishes and cleaning the table than vacuum. She has a toy vacuum which can suck dirt but she has stopped playing with it.

Good idea on the book review sessions. I restrict bedtime stories to 3. Simply because she's 3yrs old.

Once she told me she wants to get married and have children. I asked her who is she getting married to, and she said 'Daddy' and have 3kids. Hmm...kids talk?

Hey, maybe your hb should be coaching me to play badminton instead. I'm embarrassed to say I can't play the game - I get hit by the shuttlecock before I can hit it.

Sheryn,
Are you working? If yes, I will be amazed if you still have the energy to do the cleaning. Even if you are not working, there's no end to household chores (like what channel said). Is amazing how our moms can cope with housework, working, and the number of kids...

Apricot,
No need to fret not getting the tickets. There's a 'Children-Sunshine of Our Lives, A Mid-Autumn Celebration' at Botanic Gardens on Oct 1 (430 - 7pm). Every now and then, the SSO will perform there. Check out the sit www.sbg.org.sg

Children's Day is coming. Anyone keen to meet up to get our kids to play together?

Hi Sarah,
I will be keen to meet up for our kids to play together. Will u be organising ? Let me know the venue and time. FYI, I am not avail on Oct1 between 2-7pm. Hope to hear from you soon.

sarah,

I have booked the tickets to babies prom for 12nn 1st Dec....when are u going?

me interested in gathering too...let me know.

Sarah
Yes, yes! children's day outing, been thinking abt that but wasn't sure if anyone would be keen, now that u mentioned, please include me! Hm... where to? I am for outdoor if the weather is good, how abt a mega picnic??? Apricot n MH are keen too. So that makes 4 families.

We didn;t get her a bday prezie, she buys what she wants every now and then, Pampered gal, u see, so didn;t see a need to buy bday prezie.

Mommies
About books, Berenstain Bears series is pretty good, affordable too, abt $5. Just bought Going to School, in the hope that it will help lessen seperation anxiety. Have to watch out for spelling though, they use American e.g. colors instead of colours.

Okie, sarah, let's gather people for the outing. Would be nice to meet my 'mystery' friends, Kristin;s mom n serenade will join us another time with made in Germany/France chocolates yah.

<font color="ff0000">CHILDREN'S DAY OUTING! YIPEE!</font>

Serenade
Thanks for listing the books; i have 4 out of the 8, think i will continue to buy singly, buying 1 book is a cheaper reward;)

Hi Lena,
Am interested to get the Berenstain Bears series books for my son. Can I get them from Popular ?

I do not mind mega picnic and yah, weather must be good.

MH/Lena/Sarah, shall we tentatively plan 30Sep ?
We can celebrate children days cum lantern festival.

Hi apricot
I got berenstain from Times and i know Kings bookstore at paragon stocks them too. Not sure abt Popular though.

I can;t make it on 30 Sep as i would be working.
1st Oct is Children's Day so i do not have to work. Is 1st oct ok for u?

okie, apricot, let's hear what the rest say. actually a brunch or lunch at someone's place is great too, if anyone is willing to host ;)

Hi Mommies!

All your children are so lucky... celebrating lantern festival and children's day picnic... and we get to read about them on the forum, sigh! I wish I had got to know you before we left... we could have started play dates on a more regular basis.

Hi Lena!
Sure, we'll bring chocolates the next time.

Hi Serenade!
Book review sounds good. It's good that we have a preschooler library here. So will let you know what draws Bryan. I was having such a difficult time yesterday explaining to him that we couldn't borrow any more books because we hadn't return ours. Actually, we could have two more, but I always pretend 3 is the maximum.

Creaming Bryan is such a torture! Maybe it's the scent, but he should be able to tell me about it now. He told me he didn't like the scent of his new handsoap the other day.

Hi Sarah!
You sure have lots of energy for 3 bedtime stories. My husband and I keep it to only one at night and one song. We try to move out of his bedroom as quickly as possible to encourage him to fall asleep on his own. Actually, the truth is we are very very tired... and we just want to be left alone without the kids.

Hi Serenade!

How old is Cheryl now?
Actually, if Kristin had been spelled with a "C", wouldn't our children have names beginning with the same letters? Are you sure our husbands never went to school together??? Or us?
happy.gif

I have been bringing the kids out pretty often these weeks. Trying to get the most out of the good weather. Is Cheryl walking well now? Kristin has only started walking on her own after she turned one. And I've been bringing her to open fields to get her to walk more confidently... well, not forcing her, but giving her the opportunity to practise. I must admit that I'm a bit impatient coz winter's coming, and she's got to get used to walking and walking confidently with layers of clothes and thick shoes.

Will check the prices with amazon.de regarding the DVDs. But letting Bryan handle DVDs... heartache! So expensive and so much of his finger prints! Arrrgh!

Hi Lena/MH/Sarah,

If you do not mind travel to Punggol 21/EgdeField plains, I can host our 1st gathering at my humble house. Can we pot luck ? How old are you kids ? Need to know then we can prepare food suitable for them. My son is 3.5yo. Hope to hear you gals soon.

This is going to be exciting! Our first gathering...Kristin's_mom, we will see you year end, and Serenade, next Apr.

Ok, shall we confirm:
Venue: Apricot's house (Punggol 21)
Date: Sun, Oct 1
Time: 11am?

Lena, MH,
I'm ok with venue if it's alright with both of you. Btw, how many kids are there? I'm with one child.

MH,
I'm attending the 10.30am session. A nice lunch thereafter.

Apricot,
Thanks for volunteering your place. Pot luck sounds good. Finger food? Hannah is born in May.
Btw, I do not think Popular stocks Berenstain Bears.

Lena,
Mind if I ask what you working as? I guess it must be chilren related since off on Children's Day. Hee hee...Going to check out the Berenstain Bears' books. I watch the cartoons though.

Kristin's_mom,
It was after much bargaining then we agreed on 3books. Everything is 3 - 3sips of soft drinks, 3 lollies etc...I'm a bad, bad mom who offers soft drinks...

Any mommies read Chinese books to your kids? Any books to recommend or where to buy (besides Popular)? I have been speaking Mandarin to Hannah since birth, and daddy in English. But lately, it's a mixture of both. So she is very bilingual...Most importantly, grandparents are more comfortable in Mandarin.

Hi Sarah,
Same like you. We spoke Mandarin to Aston since birth. I was quite bothered that he will not speak English then realised my worries are unfounded becos when he in childcare he picks up English with his teachers (most of his teachers are Indians, got to speak English by force) and classmates. So we are very happy that he is very bilingual. For me, I buy alot of chinese books from Popular and read to him. Then recently I buy a no of chinese books from those makeshift stalls selling Chinese educational books. They are rather good as it comes with books and CD so we can play on TV let our child listen. We can cross exchange information when we meet.

Hi Sarah!

You are not a bad mom... sometimes I offer an equivalent of Zappel to Bryan. My mom offered my brother and me soft drinks when we were young too. Our teeth turn out ok! Other than receeding gums which is a sign of old age... sigh, my dentist has nothing to complain about. My mom told me not to deprive them of a treat here and there... coz she's seen children from very strict parents going crazy during CNY with all sorts of goodies and crates of soft drinks! Now we don't want that to happen to our kids, right? So anything in moderation is good...
happy.gif

I know what's like when your child starts to negotiate with you... e.g. Bryan always wants 3 minutes if he's told to keep his toys, or go to bed, or have his meal... etc. But in actual fact, he doesn't know how long three minutes are... I'm so thankful that he still doesn't have any sense of time yet. I dread the day when he can read the clock and tell me it's not even 9pm, not time for bed. At the moment, nap time, bed time, meal time... are all quite flexible - it's when mommy says it!
happy.gif
So 15 min +/- will not be obvious to them.

Hi Kristin's mom,
When you mention Bryan wants 3 mins keep his toys, go to bed...it is very interesting..this is becos my son/Aston also often says give me 6 mins when he wants to stay longer in his bath.

Hi Lena!

Your recipe for pasta: do you cut the meat? Mince it?

Think I'll try it... sounds yummy... and it's easy!
happy.gif

Cheap ingredients in Germany???? Air!
happy.gif
Everything is ex... whatever you get in Singapore... same figure here but in Euros! But what to do... still cheaper than dining out... e.g. too lazy to cook yesterday, so we went out for dinner... it came up to 55 Euros! When my parents-in-law came and they were dying for Chinese Hor Fun, so we had take-aways for 30 Euros... when my husband told them it's 60 S$, they decided to eat at home as far as possible.

Hmmm... but bread is certainly very cheap... cheese and all your cold cuts... and beer... haha!! But we can't give that to the kids.
happy.gif

O yes, yoghurt!!! If you're ever here... you should just have yoghurt morning, noon and night! You can't find any yoghurt as tasty... not the Australian nor the American ones... well, that's what the Australians and Americans say themselves. BUt it's true... comparing with what I get in Singapore which is mainly from Australia, give me German yoghurt any time! My FIL was impressed too!

Hi Mummies,
I personally like to eat apple and so does my son. I will specially find apple juice too. I try some brand like Yeo or Magnolia or Marigold and found the taste not that great or sometimes too sweet. Now I found this apple juice packaged under this brand called Ve Good. Other than apple, it has purple carrot juce. They just taste so nice.

Hi Serenade!

Yeah... the summer sales were on when we were there... Got mainly clothes, getting ready for the winter. Not much of a sales for children books though, sigh!

We were there just a week before the terrorist scare in London. I think it should be ok now to travel...

Have you tried getting your children to sleep early in winter... like the ang-moh kids? Am wondering if I would stand a better chance to get them to bed when the days get shorter.

Hi Lena!!

I'm not much of a mooncake fan... don't like durian too!!! I don't miss chicken rice nor char kway tiao... but I sure miss my mom's lotus root soup.

We are quite lucky here in Frankfurt... there's a good restaurant that even serves authentic laksa. And getting Chinese groceries is also convenient. The Asian supermarket here sells durians, mangosteens, longans, lychees etc.

Hmmm... but I really miss dim-sum. That's what we had when we were in London... Bryan turned out to be quite a dim-sum fan. I should have known coz that's what I could contain in my stomach when I was pregnant, anything else just came out.

Hi Sarah!

There's a bookstore in IMM called "shu" - the Chinese character for books. It's got lots of Chinese titles too. I bought some Chinese VCDs before I left Singapore. At one point of time, Bryan could do quite a bit of the San Zi Jing - good grief, my Hanyu Pinyin... correct me, it doesn't look quite right to me. But now, he's losing it already coz he doesn't speak Mandarin in school at all... And the little bit that we do at home...sigh! I'm gonna start a Mandarin-speaking playgroup here soon!!! We have a few Taiwanese friends.

Hi apricot!

Does he really have the concept of 6 mins?

I usually won't wait up it's really all 3 mins. I would say, your 3 mins are over... like after 1 minute...
happy.gif

No idea why three?
Actually, we started with the 5-min warning thingy when he's about 18 months or even younger. SOmething we took away from the GKGW class.

Btw, anyone did a GKGW class before? I know it's received controversial comments in the States. But I find it basically works very well in our Asian Christian context, esp in matters of disciplining children.

Hi Kristin's Mom,

He do not know time and so no concept of 6 mins. Actually it started from 5mins a yr ago and only recently he increased to 6mins. He will purposely drag the time by saying another 6mins. So nowadays I become serious in my tone and told him the moment mummy says time up you have to come out from bath and no more another 6mins. He follow it. I will be interested to teach him read time soon.

Never heard of GKGW class...pls elaborate. Thanks/

This thread is moving so much faster now. I can hardly catch up with it. Dear me, I must be getting old...

Even though I'm not attending the outing, I'm feeling excited too! Really wish I can be there to meet you mummies.

Hi Sarah,
If offering kids soft drinks is bad, then I'm a "bad" mummy too. In fact, my kids were introduced to junk food once they turned 1 year old. Of course, we don't do it on a frequent basis. In the beginning, Brandon would grab for the coke and frites (french fries). But surprisingly when he turned two, these stuff no longer hold his interest. Given a choice, he would choose orange juice over coke. He even told us that taking too much junk food would make him fat and unhealthy. We are crossing our fingers that Cheryl will turn out as sensible as her brother.

Just curious, is knowing San Zi Jing important? Seems to me that all small kids are learning San Zi Jing, Tang shi etc... Perhaps I have been away too long, but aren't these too difficult for young kids to understand?

Can't say that Brandon is doing very well in Chinese, but at least he doesn't resist it. He's pretty good at recognising the chinese characters though... Currently he's doing the Galaxy Chinese readers.

Seems like I'm the only mommy who is over-indulging my kids. But even if I were to refuse him, Brandon would read on his own. So I rather take over and make it a short affair. Then we can all rest earlier
happy.gif

Hi Channel,
Why did you decide to "retire" the vacuum cleaner? Is it b'cos of the noise it makes? I have a Vax vacuum cleaner at home, but it's rather heavy and noisy. I am "shopping" around for one that is lightweight, quiet and able to do all sorts of cleaning. Ever came across any?

kristins_mom,

Cheryl is 15 mths old now. She's walking, or rather, running pretty well now. Do you find Kristin tend to learn things faster? Cheryl enjoys imitating what Brandon is doing, even reading. Now she demands to be read to every day too.

Haha... not sure if we went to the same school. Perhaps we'll know when we meet each other. Btw, if I had stayed on and went through the NIE course, I would have been a trained language teacher in secondary schools too. The world is really small, isn't it?

Oh yes, the things are so expensive in Europe. When we were back in Sg last year, we found eveything so much cheaper and couldn't resist the temptation to keep buying. So, do watch out for your pockets!

Apricot,

Both your son and Bryan are so sophiscated. Mine would only say "Later". Brandon can read time by the hour. But ever since we introduce the minutes, things got a bit confusing for him. Hopefully, he can get over this confusion stage soon.

Hi Sarah and Channel,

I am SAHM, and I sure agree there is no ending to housework, just the laundry, paper mopping, cooking are already daily chores, so wondering where else can I find time to do special tasks.

My kids now sleeping later and later, by the time they doze off, it would be 11pm. At those wee hours, what kind of housework can I do? So it is usually this time that I "enter" the internet world and have some "peace".

Hi all, nice to hear of the gathering, but puggol is too far for me, i stay in the west. I sure hope you guys enjoy yrselves. Would love to have my kids making friends with all others since they do not really have any friends by staying at home all the time.

Hi Sherlyn,

Same here. I can only manage to have some personal time when the kids are sleeping. There's so much to do but yet so little time.

Btw, I'm staying in the West too, the Hillview area. How abt you?

Hi Serenade!

How did you manage to introduce time by the hour? Please share! Bryan finds it difficult with the long hand and the short hand.

Anyhow... the 3 mins he says is quite meaningless since he hasn't got the concept of time yet. Eons could have elapsed... and he's still at his 3 mins...

Getting him to do San Zi Jing is mainly to practise his aural skills, learning by listening. I don't pretend to know what goes on in the head when a child is acquiring a language, but I did read during my university days that one acquires a language fastest by listening and speaking it.

So it's always been rhymes in all languages with Bryan. I always leave out the last word of the next stanza so that he can fill the gap. It's been great coz sometimes when I read to him, even a new rhyme, he seems to be able to complete the next rhyme by looking at the picture.

Do you do puzzles with your children?

Serenade,

We thought this girl was going to beat the kor-kor hands down, all the way...
When we brought her back from the hospital, (I think it's the first week - my memory is not so vivid now, but my husband was still around... so it must have been in the first month at least,) we were woken up one night by Kristin's laughter. Now that was something we didn't hear from Bryan until he was 3 months old!

She's cooed and gurgled more... and so she started her baba, dada, daddy... bye-bye etc much earlier than Bryan. But I guess women just naturally have the need to talk more
happy.gif

She's very teachable and learns much faster than Bryan. I remember breastfeeding her one morning when she was about 8 months old. I saw her playing with her hands, opening and clenching them, so I quickly seized the opportunity to sing her Twinkle, twinkle, little star with action... and she got it then and there. It's a lot more fun teaching her than Bryan... just like in school... with girls, you see results much faster.

However, her gross motor skills aren't as good as her brother. Strangely, both my children started walking on their own exactly 7 days after they turned one. Yet, by this time, Bryan was already running. He walked alot more when he knew he could do it on his own. Sometimes I wonder if all those thick clothes hinder the child's motor skills development. When I clothe Kristin more lightly, she walks better and faster. Let's hope this autumn will continue to be warm all the way till Nov.

I find her being able to concentrate much better than Bryan, esp with sorting types of toys.
Maybe each child is just different... I don't have enough boys and girls to tell if the gender matters. Bryan was born at 36th week, while Kristin was 3 days short to EDD. I don't know if that matters too.

But having a share in what her brother has - definitely! She's very demanding now too. When we read together, if kor-kor touches the book, she'll immediately reach out for it. And then... you know what happens. So the rule now is only mommy can flip the pages.

Do Brandon and Cheryl get on well with each other?

Kristin will definitely hug Bryan when she sees him at the pick-up at the kindergarten. Bryan will proudly parade his little sister... And sometimes, when they wake up from their nap, they can't wait to give each other a hug or a kiss - how sweet! But when they play, they snatch toys from each other - ugly! These days it's Kristin who creates a scene. I guess she's trying to stamp her authority and wants her brother to know that she matters too.

Hi apricot!

Have you tried the timer-method? That's the thing I use for time out actually... but a timer can also be used to signal the end of a game... bath time whatever. I read that some kids are more willing to stop when they hear the buzz coz it's not mommy and it's not them. It's a sign from another "higher" authority.

GKGW - Growing Kids God's Way
It's a parenting course developed by this American couple, Gary and Anne Marie Ezzo. Gary Ezzo, formerly a pastor, is also the same guy who wrote "Babywise". His methods have caused lots of uproar in America coz they're mainly parent-directed, e.g. parent-directed feeding. He advocates spanking, which is a no-no for many who think that reasoning with a child will better motivate good behaviour. Anyway, you can read more here:
http://www.gfi.org/
or its criticism here:
http://www.ezzo.info/index.htm
If you want to check out the courses run in Singapore, you can visit this site:
http://www.gfi-singapore.org/webapp/smarty_forwarder_home.php

Personally, my husband and I find GKGW useful to us.

Serenade,
My sis is using an Electrolux cordless cleaner. Pretty good, you can vaccuum as and when you like, especially with her 3kids around. What's this Galaxy Chinese readers? Heard of it but never check it out.

Kristin's_mom,
Hmm, I think Kristin &amp; Cheryl has a mind of their own. It's definitely good to have more than 1 child. I can imagine the heartwarming scene...see that in my nieces too...they kiss, they fight etc.

My sis who is living in Australia, put the kids to bed about 8pm regardless of season. Recently bedtime gets earlier to 7pm as they are attending sch, and they have outgrown nap time. Only on special occasions that bedtime stretch to 8.30pm.

Btw, what subjects were you teaching before you quit?

Apricot,
Any particular reason for choosing the name Aston? Pretty unique.

Lena, MH &amp; Apricot,
Perhaps we can meet somewhere central so that mommies who are interested can join us? Just a thought.

Recently I brought Hannah to the movies. She sat on my lap for the whole 1.5hrs. Gosh...She told me not to move by my legs as it was making her uncomfortable. I was not aware that she needs a ticket too...it was based on height. Other than that, it was good experience. Going to try again.

Hi Kristin's mom,

Thanks for the information on GKGW. Personally I do not like spanking but alot of old folks will encourage us to do as this is the weapon tat works on childre. Aston is very expressive, will also reason out with you and spanking does not work on him. We realise talking to him, showing him examples from books that we read may help him understand and hopefully he will grow more sensible. So we gradually try not to spank him.

I will read the website at home later. In office, cannot cos there are too much things to do.

Aston has a blog and we are in the midst of reconstructing it and will share once ready.

Hi Sarah,

There is no meaning to the name Aston
Aston is derived from English premier league Aston Villa. I wanted to name him starting with A and so I decided on Aston. Then not too long ago, I pass by RiverValley and saw one private condo named The Aston. So I tell my hubby to aim to live there.

Abt the gathering, perhaps we can change the date and then plan a picnic at parks eg, WEST COAST PARK or EAST COAST PARK.
I am quite lousy in suggesting..sorry.

Apricot,
Are you a fan of Aston Villa? Shall we just settle at your place, timing to be decide later? Else we may end up not meeting one another...

Heard that West Coast Park is quite nice, though it's too far away for me. East Coast is filled with rubbish.

Lena,
Where are you??

Hi Sarah,

No no, I am not fan of Aston Villa. I like David Beckham and last time he is in Man U. I like Brazil striker Ronaldo and both them now in Real Madrid. Well I only see them in World Cup every 4 yrs. Most of their information is from my hubby. But I sounded so experience "knowing them"..ha ha..

Come to the gathering. If settle at my place, you can come after 9am. Exact address will be provided later.

Goodness, so happening here. Who to answer what now???

ok, ok outing 1st, i am ok with apricot's place, or anywhere else. I live in AMK, where are u, sarah? any news from MH? Went to west coast park, the sand filled playground is big but i dun fancy eating Mcdonalds which is the only eating pl there. Sarah is right abt ECP. nothing but oil spills and litter sob sob...
For the 1st meeting, is it better to hang out at Apricot;s, so that we dun have to run after the kids and have more time to chat? Apricot, do u prefer to go out or stay home since u have something on from 2pm?

Kristin;s mom,
i just did the sauce again earlier, this time, more yummy, chicken breastmeat, less oily (i don;t use minced), celery, carrot, onion, tomato, potato, all in a pot, that;s her lunch, easy cheasy! Can also boil an egg to top up.

Sarah
Abt Chinese bks, i got I Can Read (wo hui du) by mdm soh, a retired chinese teacher, pretty good, will show it to u when we meet, and if u are keen, can get direct from her.

Hi kristins_mom,

Exactly! Girls seem to be so much fun and responsive than boys. At least, it seems like ours are

It must be really excited to see Kristin clenching her hands when you sang Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Cheryl's favourite was When You are Happy and You Know It. She would be clapping her hands happily every time we sang the song. Before she turned one, she was already nodding her head and stamping her feet to the song. One day when she's was abt 9 mths old, she suddenly kept pointing at the flowers. So, I started showing her around and pointing to her things like flowers, windows, lights etc. A few days later when I casually asked her "Where are the flowers?" She actually pointed out the correct answer! By 10 mths old, she could point out some of the objects in the books. Brandon was definitely not this advanced at the same age.

Talking wise, she babbled a lot as a baby too. We could hear "mama, dada, gogo" etc but my hubby always rubbed it off as baby babblings. It was at 8.5 mths old when she called out "daddy" loud and clear that we considered her started talking. Since then, new words just kept adding on. She spoke her first 3 words sentence "I wan mama" at 13 mths old. Incidentally, that is Brandon's favourite expression :p But she's much less chatty than Brandon. Brandon was a rather quiet baby. But, after his first birthday, he "talked" or rather babbled nonstop in what seems like sentences, even before strangers. Whereas Cheryl is quieter and "talks" only when she feels like it in front of strangers. I think Brandon's love for attention stems from being the only child in his baby years. Does Bryan display the same trait?

For gross motor skills, she definitely beats Brandon hands down. Perhaps it has something to do with their weights? Brandon was hitting almost 13kg by his first birthday while Cheryl just managed to touch 10kg recently.

Attention span, Brandon can concentrate better. Was Bryan fascinated by toys as a baby? Toys don't seem to hold baby Brandon's interest at all. He was more interested in real life stuff. For Cheryl, she would explore toys after toys.

It must really make your day to see them kissing and hugging away. Cheryl started the kissing and hugging around 13 mths too. Bryan is definitly proud of his little sister. Brandon has not displayed such affection yet. It used to be more of Brandon bullying Cheryl. But nowadays, there are more fightings and snatchings. Headache... How do you manage when they fight over the same thing? Does Bryan share his stuff with Kristin? Books wise, they have different sets of books (though lately, Cheryl is more interested in her bro's books).

Btw, I saw Kristin's photo in one of the thread. She's got such big lovely eyes!

Hi Sarah,

You should seriously consider a second one (if both you and Hannah are ready). It's fun to see them grow up together, having each other as a playmate or rather "fighting mate". Of course, the amount of work will increase too...

Cordless vacuum cleaner sounds great! Does it handle wet cleaning too?

You can try Raffles Creative. If you are interested, I can pm you my friend's contact details. She's a part time sales consultant for Raffles Creative. The readers come with a CDrom software too. But it might be too simple for Hannah. Let me know if you are interested.

Lena,
I'm using the "I Can Read" by Mdm Soh too. Brandon is only doing the Level 1. Is it cheaper to get directly from Mdm Soh?

Hi Lena and Serenade,

I also have "I can Read" by Mdm Soh. Level 2 &amp; Level 4 which I buy from forum BP. Very KS jus buy &amp; keep cos will use them eventually. Did not buy level 1 cos my sis has it &amp; thot can share. Looks like cannot share cos she told me she will use the cards for quite sometime. I will need to buy level 1 &amp; 3 to make a complete set.

Hi Lena and Sarah,

Let's stick to come my house for this 1st gathering. Yah, the kids can run around and play while we chat. We still have around 1 week to plan the food. Let's confirm the arrangement by 27Sep on the potluck food and the no of people coming. Yeah !! Really look forward...

Serenade
Definitely, (hush hush) she lives near me so i go direct to her. you can email me to check prices. I like the books but have no discipline at all, and doing as and when i feel like it. in fact, i am concerned abt mel's chinese, i see many kids getting failing the subject, some with single digit scores. how do u go abt with mandarin? mel listens to chinese songs when she's in the car and seems to work, she's singing some of her favorites but she doesn't know what the words mean. we r trying hard, hopefully, the school can help. i m not keen to start her in chinese enrichment or whatsoever.

Sarah, Apricot,

OUTINGS:

1. Apricot's place
2. Upper Pierce reservoir - picnic with monkeys
