Paul Immigrations Reviews: Singapore PR Applications Made Easy

It’s no surprise that permanent residency status in Singapore is highly sought after. After all, Singapore is perpetually ranked among the top places in the world to live, work and study. It’s not uncommon for expatriate families to eventually put down roots in our culturally diverse city state. More locals are also marrying foreign spouses and starting families here. However, for better or worse, the Singaporean government can be picky when it comes to green-lighting PR applications. Thankfully, for those truly sincere about obtaining PR status for themselves and their families, there is help at hand.

The Singapore PR Application Process

The application process for PR status is complicated and tedious, to say the least. You’ll first have to identify if you qualify as one of the following:

  • Spouse of a Singapore citizen (SC) or permanent resident (PR)
  • Unmarried child aged below 21 born within the context of a legal marriage to, or have been legally adopted by, a SC or PR
  • Aged parent of a SC
  • Holder of an Employment Pass or S Pass
  • Student studying in Singapore
  • Foreign investor in Singapore

All PR submissions must be completed online using ICA’s e-Service. This involves filling out a lengthy application form and uploading a series of relevant supporting documents. Once all the documentation is correctly submitted, a $100 non-refundable processing fee for each applicant is then payable.

Then the waiting begins. It usually takes four to six months, sometimes longer, before you get the results. And there are more rejections than approvals. While the number of applicants continue to rise each year, the number of new PRs annually has hovered around the 30,000 mark in recent years.

PRs enjoy benefits that non-citizens and non-residents can’t. Top on the list are subsidised housing, healthcare and education, tax reliefs and greater employment opportunities. Naturally, there have been cases where foreigners obtain PR status simply to take advantage of these benefits, with no real intent to settle here. In response, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) tightened its policies from 2009 and reduced the number of approved cases.

There are six steps to the entire application process when you enlist the help of these professionals:

  1. A phone call with a sales representative to ascertain your eligibility and conduct a basic profile assessment.
  2. A meeting in person to confirm said eligibility (to produce work pass, etc.) and a review of your profile assessment and factors affecting your case. You may then decide if you would like to engage their services.
  3. After being advised on what documents are essential for the application, you will be requested to submit them either in person or via email.
  4. The consultant will complete the PR application form based on the collated documents, while an in-house writer crafts a personalised cover letter to set you and your submission apart from the thousands of others ICA receives.
  5. After the steps above are complete, it will be submitted via ICA’s e-Service on your behalf. The entire process typically takes one to two months.
  6. ICA takes four to six months to assess each submission, and depending on the outcome, the consultant will guide your next steps.

Sounds pretty simple, doesn’t it? That’s because the consultants streamline the process for you and handle the headache-inducing parts of the procedure. But beyond that, they also ensure your entire submission serves to position you in the best light possible.

According to 35-year-old operations manager Dom Lim, the trick to getting your submission approved isn’t just in showing how you can fit into the local community, but also demonstrating how you stand out in the best way possible. “To do this, you need to take ample time to consolidate and decide which additional documents will help showcase your potential contributions as a PR. Accompany that with a professionally written cover letter to serve as a summary of your merits.”
