Beyond Kids’ Clubs: New Family and Kid-Friendly Activities at Hotels & Resorts

Remember when hotels and resorts only had kids’ clubs? We love them for helping to keep our little ones entertained while on a family holiday. These days though, hotels and resorts offer much more than just the kids’ club. We’re talking about programmes specially curated for little travellers to learn through play while on holiday. Think role-playing resort jobs, marine conservation, superhero yoga, origami classes, and even cultural immersion. So if you’re planning for your next family trip, why not try one of these?

Meliá Ho Tram Beach Resort

Opened in April, this 17-hectare resort on Ho Tram beach is only a two-hour drive from Ho Chi Minh City. Its new “Family Forever” package includes experiences such as lantern-making. There’s also a “Family Olympics” with games like beach volleyball, football, chess, and Jenga. The aim? To help parents and children disconnect from technology and stress, and bond while on a family holiday. Do crafts, play sports (paddle boarding, kayaking, cycling basic tennis lessons), and relax over a movie at the outdoor cinema. Outside the resort, explore wet markets, visit hot springs, mud baths, and historical sites. Web

Banyan Tree Samui

Nestled among verdant greenery overlooking the Gulf of Thailand, the Banyan Tree Samui is a luxury holiday haven. Did you know that it’s also child-friendly? At the resort’s Octopus Club, kids aged four through 12 years enjoy Thai cooking lessons, dancing classes, and boxing sessions, among other activities. We also like those that teach little ones about nature and the environment, such as the resort’s “coral regeneration” project. Here, kids attach broken coral retrieved from Banyan Tree’s private bay to fresh blocks, and replace them in the reef. They can then observe the results of their work on group snorkelling lessons, while learning about marine sustainability. Web

Grand Hyatt Taipei

Ease your urban baby into the joy of camping with a safe indoor glamping experience at the Grand Hyatt Taipei. The hotel’s Family Adventure package includes a pop-up tent, plush toys, a picnic table, and a planetarium projector so kids can ‘stargaze’ to sleep. Bring them on a real adventure the next day to explore the hiking trails at the nearby Elephant Mountain! Else, with the Taipei 101 MRT just a stone’s throw away, there’s always the rest of Taipei to explore. Web

Fusion Suites Danang Beach

What’s the secret behind every super hero’s success? It’s a healthy dose of inner calm, the yoga team at Fusion Suites Da Nang say. That’s why they’ve launched Super Hero Yoga to help kids tap their inner powers with the help of their favourite heroes. These twice-a-week classes last 30 minutes each and are perfect for children aged two to 12 years. Parents, want to embrace your inner superhero? You’re welcome to join in too, after all, it’s a family holiday! Classes are free-of-charge and open to resort guests. Web

Palace Hotel Tokyo

Kids can feel like royalty at the Palace Hotel Tokyo, which shares a canal with the actual Imperial Palace Gardens! Here young ones are treated like little princes and princesses right from check-in. They get their own check-in cards, as well as souvenirs like stickers and a Palace Hotel Tokyo Rubik’s cube. In the room there’ll be kid-sized pyjamas, slippers, and bathrobes. Cribs, diaper pails, baby bathtubs and baby toiletries are available upon request for the littliest ‘royals’. Kids can also learn a little more about Japanese culture at an in-house origami session each Wednesday. Web

Angsana Velavaru, Maldives

Just five hours away from Singapore, Angsana Velavaru’s new Live For Family Fun package packs fun into one luxurious getaway. It includes complimentary meals and ice cream for children under 12, kids’ club access, and T-shirt or cap painting. As a family, go on a dolphin watch, learn to dive (kids from age eight or nine can too!), join the Marine Conservation Programme, go fishing, and try undersea exploration. We like that the resort uses allergy-free bedding so there’s no need to worry about flares and itching; just enjoy! Web

Holiday Inn Resorts

Have your kids ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at hotels and resorts? They’ll get a chance to find out at selected Holiday Inn resorts in Bali, Batam, Penang, Thailand, and the Maldives. The Little Big Hotelier programme for guests aged four to 12 years lets kids role play by ‘working’ in key hotel positions. They can choose to be at reception or ‘work’ as a porter. There are also options to do a stint at the kids club, or as a kitchen chef. What better way to learn these new skills than under the guidance of the expert Holiday Inn Hotelier crew? Web

Sri Panwa, Phuket

This not-so-secret celeb hideout (which has hosted Hollywood A-listers like Leonardo DiCaprio) is also a family-friendly haven. Surprised? From now till 31 October 2019, Sri Panwa is running a ‘Happy Family Package’ which includes three nights accommodation in a two-bedroom pool villa, daily breakfast for four, a relaxing 60-minute Aromatic Thai Oil Massage for parents at Sri Panwa’s award-winning Cool Spa, one lunch at Baba Hot Box for four, a five-course dinner for four at Baba Soul Food Thai Cuisine, among others.
