Dawn and Nicholas’ Whimsical Night-time Maternity Photoshoot with Knotties Frame

Every pregnancy is different, yet they are all beautiful. See how Dawn and Nicholas immortalised the memories of their pregnancy journey with a romantic night-time maternity photoshoot.

When we contacted Dawn via email to find out more about her night-time maternity photoshoot, she replied to us from the delivery room, her water bag having burst just two hours before! And we’re happy to announce that Baby Nate was born later that evening on 14 November 2018. Even as we send out congratulations to the new parents, let’s take a tiny peek into their pregnancy journey and find out more about the photoshoot.

Could you share a little about your pregnancy journey, its ups and downs?

The first trimester was quite uncomfortable, and I struggled with nausea, lack of appetite, and a really strong aversion to meat. The second trimester was a breeze in contrast, and I even started swimming thrice a week once my gynae gave me the go-ahead! The third trimester was much harder, and I had really bad tailbone aches and hip pains. I was also almost permanently thirsty.

I’d say that the worst part was severe water retention that started towards the late part of my second trimester and continued all the way till now (the day of Baby Nate’s birth!). But on the plus side, I had really great skin. I also ate very healthily since I was very conscious of feeding baby well. People also said I had the pregnancy glow, although I couldn’t see that in myself!

What did you do to get ready for Baby Nate’s arrival?

We read up a lot and spoke to friends and relatives to glean all their pregnancy tips. We got lots of useful advice and are very grateful! You’ll also see props like educational books and flash cards in the photos. They’re all part of our pregnancy journey – the BabyPlus Prenatal Education System, for instance, was part of his prenatal education while in my womb! We believe in both nature and nurture, and will do our best to teach and parent him well.

Why did you decide to do a maternity photoshoot and what do you think of the results?

We wanted to take photos to commemorate our pregnancy journey since this is our first. Knotties Frame was highly recommended by a friend, Pris, a makeup artist who had worked with them before, and who also did my makeup and hair for this photoshoot. I had seen a portfolio of their night shots and loved them; it was something we’ve never tried before. They also took care of the set-up and settled the flowers with Florals Actually, so we didn’t have to worry about anything.

Which was great because I was 34 weeks pregnant at that point! The photos turned out really beautifully and I’m glad we have them to look back on and show our baby when he’s a little older.

The photos are lovely! Tell us more about the process.

It all went really smoothly! The weather changed our initial location plans but Knotties Frame adapted really well even at the last minute. A rustic tent was set up to create a whimsical and romantic setting under soft, warm fairy lights. Using minimal makeup to enhance my pregnancy glow, earth-tone eye makeup was paired with natural-tone lipsticks. To accentuate the floral crown, I wore a loose half-updo with wavy curls.

Shades of turquoise, yellow and blue were the colour scheme – cheery hues to evoke feelings of joy and anticipation of welcoming our baby boy. The flowers included Dutch carnations, oxypetalum, roses and blue nigella, with flowing ribbons in matching colours. Another highlight of the night shoot was the light arch to signify the new phase of life we’re entering. According to Knotties Frame, it was achieved by light painting and long-exposure photography, with no artificial Photoshop additions.

What would you most like to tell Baby Nate when he grows up?

That as long as he puts his mind to it and works hard, he can get anything his heart desires.
