From where to get spooky decorations and adorable children’s costumes to places to go trick-or-treating, here’s everything you need to know to have a kid-friendly Halloween this year.
Halloween – a contraction of All Hallows’ Eve – falls on 31 October every year, the evening before All Hallows’ Day (or All Saints’ Day). It is said to have originated in a Celtic pagan festival where people would dress up in scary costumes and make loud noises in the streets to chase evil spirits away. After making its way to America, the festival evolved over the decades and now we see children in cute costumes going from house to house asking for candy. “Trick or treat!”
A similar custom many Chinese observe here in Singapore is the Hungry Ghost Festival, but instead of dressing up to scare away ghosts, we appease them with offerings instead! Still, in recent years we are seeing more young people and families with children dressing up in costumes during Halloween. While door-to-door trick-or-treating hasn’t quite caught on here, a growing number of places in Singapore have jumped on the bandwagon with Halloween-themed events.
Get Dressed in Scare-ific Costumes
The first thing to think about is costumes. After all, candy aside, the best part of Halloween for any kid (and kid-at-heart) usually revolves around getting dressed up. From little Disney princesses to mini Marvel superheroes, or the more traditional witch or ghoul costumes, you can choose to buy or rent from one of these stores.
