Thyroid causes infertility?

Gillian,
I used to visit a GP for my hyperthyroidism. I'm now in remission after taking meds for 12mths...normally doc would advise us to wait till 12-18mths later then try conceiving.

Gillian, the thyroid illness can't be cured but can be put under control. Once under control, you can conceive and there usually are no problems with the pregnancy. If the thyroid is not under control, it would affect the pregnancy and even chances of conceiving are reduced.

I'm a subsidised patient and was fortunate to be able to have the same doc all the while. If you however specify that you want to see Dr Kon, you would have to be a private patient. The charges are quite different and the tests can be quite ex for a pte patient. To be a subsidised patient, you can get a referral from polyclinic and they would refer a doc to you.

Yes, as per what YB said, usually have to take med for abt 1-1.5 years for it to be in remission, then try and conceive.

ladies, thanks for your input. Yah, i have read that thyroid can have recurrence. I went to my chinese sinseh and she asked me to stop TTC until it is control, but she said maybe few months or even a month, depending how fast it can be under control..

i'll be going to another gp today hoping he will treat me as i went to that GP who took my thyroid blood test and even gynae, i am like a ball being kick here and there. That gp even said he is kiasi to treat even when i told him i can dont conceive first as treating is priority

I had thyroid and i concieved naturally

Hi hypothyroid mums,

No worries. I have hypothyroid for almost 20 years by now. just have to keep your thyroid under control. you must rem to eat the thyroxine tablets as instructed. During pregnancy, you thyroid levels .. . is different, you need more. see a specialist if you are a thyroid patient.. .and pregnant. Specialist can .. monitor you closely.
trust my words. . .
I'm also pregnant.

hi qingqing,

CONGRATS!!!! how are you doing now? Suffering any MS? very happy for you =)

ice-kacang,

me now pregnant, and only found to be hypo during 2nd tri.... took medication, TSH turned ok. Now last tri.... TSH turn bad... must increase medicine dosage.... got to test blood again coming check up. keeping my fingers crossed that it'll be ok!!!

Same here, I have hyperthryroidism for the past 9 years. Relapsed twice when I was off medication. Conceived and delivered a healthy baby when my condition was under control. In fact, the pregnancy period is good for hyperthryoid patient due to hormonal change. not likely to have hyperthryoidism. But it is the opposite for Hypo patients. Hypo tend to worsens. But 4 months after delivery, as expected, relapsed again!! So now back on medication : )

hi all , pls advise on thyroid.

my wife and i was in gd health without any thyroid within ourself and our family genes.

My wife just given birth 2 days ago and the baby doctor check my baby boy blood and she found out that " dun know what is that call reach 90 " in teh forst test and second test reaches 127. i really dun know what is that term call for.

This doctor just found tis level too high for thyroid too high as for normal babies was below 30..

so right now my wife was so scare and of couse me too, starting to think negatively....

teh dorctor suggested to bring my baby boy to Mount E for a specialist check on thyroid tomorrow dated 27/06/07.

hopefully all goes well...is there any one here can advsie wht to do or have any simiiar experience with new born baby?

hi redegg3210,
i had thyroid a couple of yrs ago even though my family had no history of thyroid problems. doc was saying that it can be due to stress (causing hormones fluctuations) or genetics. my thyroid condition was under control but when my boy was delivered, he failed 2 thyroid tests (within 1 wk of birth). i was worried too. luckily, he passed the thyroid test (1 month later). guess u dun have to worry too much cos it seems like a couple of us whose babies failed the thyroid tests when they were born are ok at the 1st month test. good luck and do try to talk to ur wife. guess she needs the support especially when she just gave birth.

hi there

i have hypothyroid. so upset, does it really affect chances of conceiving? any health supplements or food to take and avoid? other than medication? any specialist to recommend?

ive hyperthyroid for the past 4 years and brought it under control last month. That is, both TSH and Free T4 are under control. Tested positive today and did a blood test and realised that while my Free T4 is within the normal range it has increased from the last reading and my TSH has slipped to below the normal range.

Im terribly worried as I miscarried the last round at a very early stage possibly due to uncontrolled thyroid levels. Does anyone has a similar experience at the early stage of their pregnancy and still managed to have a healthy and smooth pregnancy?

Hi all,

Is this thread still alive? I just realise i had thyroid too. and i had 2 misc before i knew i had thyroid. any advise hw to proceed on?

Hi createjoy,

Are you seeing any doc for your thyroid? As long as your condition's under control, you should be able to conceive without any problem. Most imptly, your thyroid level must be normal then the pregnancy should be smooth. I've 2 beautiful and healthy gals now even though I've also got thyroid but it's under control.

Hi,

Any 1 who had done thyroid scan before during breastfeeding? I have a blood tests to detect if there were presence of thyroid but the results were negative. Should i go further tests such as thyroid scan?

i just seen doc. he say mine at 3+ is slightly higher but not over so no prob having bb so back to sq 1 i dunno y i miscg. well i got alot prob, blood cyst, PCOs now thyroid, one bad news after another , all will create higher miscg risk, i really wonder is it meant to be no hope for me. my thyroid scan show nodules but doc believe it's benign just prescribe me some hormone medi. hmm he;'s a thyroid specialist so i guess i just gotta sure him... and pray that now my gynae knowing i got so many prob can take good care of me right from the beginning stage...

claris why r u concern of thyroid? ur test ok why u think otherwise? feel or saw something?

Hi joyful,

do you have nervous, panic attack when u having thyroid & preg?? what's your TSH level like that time?

i thought i might be too nervous the other two times. but now that i TTC but feeling very awful like very nervous wreck, i so scare getting preg.. is it true that we will feel fast heartbeat & nervous? i dont know is it i stress myself or the thyroid mk me stres or vice versa...

my doc that it will not affect bb unless we very very stress, but i was like quite stress and now haven start already like that .. a little harmful hormone daily till birth i worry will affect bb..

Hi createjoy,

I was feeling perfectly normal during my pregnancy as my thyroid level's within the normal range. So there's no such symptoms at all.

I think if thyroid's under control, you shouldn't have fast heartbeat and feeling nervous at all.....Perhaps you might consult the doc again? Just relax and take things easy, I'm sure you feel better.

Hi everyone,
I have juz given birth to a baby gal two weeks ago. Discovered a lump on my throat which appear 1 wk after delivery.
Was sent for an utlrascan and diagnose with thyroid. Can anyone recommend a good thyroid doc?
Thanks alot.

Hiya,
Would strongly recommend Dr. Daphne Khoo at SGH. She's the head there..senior consultant. very experienced. She sees patients only on Tuesdays mornings though. My thyroid's now under control after seeing her for 1 yr. =)

Hi Createjoy,

I went for recent check up wif my gynea n his suggest dat i shd go for a scan as the blood tests were taken before i was pregnant...so a bit worrying....mayb i jus have to make an appt wif a consultant jus to be sure...but i had no syptoms of thyroid at all...

Hi all, i'm newbie here. Just got my blood test result and found out that I got hyperthyroidism... I was TTC but now confusing whether I can still continue or wait till under control. Need advice from all of you. Confusing as some say can still TTC but some said no.. very sad ...

Hi Ht

I'm a clear example that you can still have kids while having thyroid. Had thyroid for more than 7 years and had 3 kids within this period.

If you really want to ttc, should inform your doc so he can change your medication to PTU which is suitable for pregnancy. Gynae would also have to monitor and make sure you do not become hypothyroid at any time during the pregnancy as it may cause danger to your foetus.

Was told that I would not be able to get well from thyroid except thru radioactive since medication didn't seem too successful to completely balance my levels. Thank God that my thyroid levels have suddenly balanced out while being pregnant with my 3rd child and levels are completely normal after childbirth.

Thanks for ur info... will inform the doc next week as need to take medicine again. By the way, understand from some ppls that with hyperthyroidism, I shld take a lot of seaweed, but some said totally cannot take seaweed and cabbage. I really a bit confuse now. Pls adv...

Thanks for your info. Other than this two item the rest just eat as per normal rite? How abt dairy product?

Dairy products are fine. However, other than cabbage and seaweed, you should also cut down on foods high in iodine content such as seafood and especially shellfish. As for tcc-ing, i think the best person to advise you will be your endocrinologist. In any case, in most cases, your thyroid condition should be brought under control within 6 mths if you're responding well to the medication.

i'm a hyperthyroid too and have been on medication for 5 years already. In the initial years however, I failed to take my condition seriously which caused me to miscarry during my 1st pregnancy. Thereafter, I was on treatment for 6 months and conceived successfully once my thyroid condition was under control. My baby boy is almost 3 mths now.

Hence, do seek treatment early and all the best in tcc-ing!

Many thanks for your info. Will check with doc in next visit....
Do you think Chinese medication is good for hyperthyroid? Or got any to recommend?

Hi,

I've hyperthyroid problem since year 2000, am now pregnant with my 1st precious. I've checked with my gynae if thyroid problem will affect my pregnancy, he actually said that while pregnant, we need a higher thyroid level, he said that is ok. Now into my 35 weeks, coping well, just that bb is getting bigger, i am getting more tired that's all! Still feeling healthy & strong to cope with my household chores!

hi
i just diagnose with thyroid, should be hyper i guess.

The thing is i am planning for 2nd baby.

Any advise?

thanks

I have a thryoid lump on my neck and dr advise me to remove it while my frd advise me to see chinese dr. anyone has advise?

hi there

i found this thread when i was searching for information about hyperthyriod and pregnancy.

i just found out about my condition 2 weeks ago and started on carbi. i saw Dr Daphne Khoo yesterday and told me that i cant have kids until i stabilise. this was a terrible shock to me as i was planning to have my 2nd kid soon. i was looking forward to it as my girl really wanted a sibling and i managed to get dh to agree after 2 years. I have been more or less in tears since yesterday.

may I know if there are any mummies who found out that they have hyper thyriod before concieving? how long did you take before you stabilise and was allowed to conceive? how low must your thyriod be before you could have kids?

i am encouraged to read the postings that many managed to have kids even with the condition. however, i dont have much time as i am already 37. i dont want to wait any longer.

i really hate myself for giving in to my husband and agree with that we wait.

hi ivy,
i just saw your posting and would like to share my experience.

I found out I have hyper thyroid late last year and I also conceive at the same time. I was also very worried and upset.

I quickly seek my gynae advise and he told me it is alright so long I take my medication regularly. He also referred me to a thyroid specialist. However, he did mention with thryoid, there is a high chance of miscarriage in the 1st trimester.

I have survived and now in my 3rd trimester already. Am still taking thyroid medication (PTU) and my gynae has said it is not harmful to the baby.

thanks for sharing. so comforting to know. congrats. hope your delivery would be smooth.

how high was your T4? Mine was 9.8. When i saw Daphne, she said it is high. I tried to contact her today to see what i could do...but i could not get her. btw, did you conceive before you find out?

i am just wondering what i should do now. do you think i should go an see another specialist?

i hope so too
happy.gif

I did question if the thyroid will affect my baby but apparently both specialist (gynae and thyroid) say no.

Ha..i cant remember my TS4 anymore. Need to go back and see my report. My thyroid has reduced to normal level.

Actually i did medical check up 2 years back and was told my thyroid was high but the GP did not insist anything so i ignore. It is only last year i went back to check cos my mum say my neck looks swollen.
By the time I check for thyroid and ask the GP, he also say I cannot conceive and should wait.
Then i already tried for my 2nd child and conceived. That's how my gynae refers to me a specialist.

Are you seeing your gynae now/

dont worry. it should be fine. great to hear that your thyriod is now normal.

i am not seing my gynae now. the endo specialist say i have to treat thyriod first.

i really wish i could just go and try for a kid....and then see how. but i know it is not fair to the kid. i dont care what happens to me.

i hope everything is fine too
happy.gif

unless u need your gynae opinion to see if you wanna try for a second kid.

sigh...i have no choice though

Hi Ivy & chiart,

I'm now pregnant with my 3rd baby while treating my hyperthyroid too. My posting above was treatment with TMC but soon after I found out that I was pregnant, gynea advised that i should monitor my condition closely. I am doing so with regular blood tests (6-8 wks interval) with my GP and am on PTU (safe for pregnant mothers). My 1st free T4 reading was 38.8 in April and am 12.7 during late May. Yours at 9.8 should be within the normal range?

Btw, I am abt 19 wks preggie now and baby is growing well, risks of miscarriage should be over too. Think hyperthyroid is not too difficult a condition to treat afterall.

HTHs. Remain positive and your condition might improve faster

Hi Ivy,

In case you were referring to TSH, mine is <0.01 while the normal range is 0.4-4.70. Cheers!

hi bin,
thanks for sharing your experience too
happy.gif
and congrats to you too
happy.gif

I am now seeing a specialist but would like to change to a normal GP.

Did you do any antibodies blood test?

Hi chiart,

Thanks and congrats to you too
happy.gif
When is your EDD?

Nope, my blood test only consists of free T4 and TSH. Are specialists charges high?

hi bin,
my TSH also <0.01. The specialist say it is normal as we are pregnant.

My EDD is 2nd Sept. What about yours?

Did you ever do antibodies blood test before? I did when I first went to see the doc. By 7th month into our pregnancy, I suppose to do it again.

I want to change to a normal GP to treat my thyroid or TMC. Do you have any recommendations?

The charges for the specialist is around $130 each visit includes consultation and blood test and the medication (PTU).

ladies, me too pregnant now and hav discover i hav hyperthyroid.
going to see my gynae tom to see if bb doing well.
jiayou everyone!!

hi bin,
i lived in sengkang haha...

Oh so GP not much cheaper either. Maybe because of the blood test

Anyway, PTU is not expensive at all just the consultation and blood test I guess
