Want to know more about Kumon

mummies, some queries....

1. for the twice weekly lessons, are there any make up classes if the kid missed due to MC? or when it falls on a public holiday?

2. i read that there are worksheets to do everyday. does it mean that the centre will give the worksheet labelled Mon - Sun?

3. as for the time needed to complete the worksheet, does it mean that the kid will have to do the worksheet with a timer?

4. does the teacher do active teaching in class? if not, how the kid learn? how many teacher/helper in each class?

5. anybody tried kumon at Bukit Batok East?

thanks.

1. no make up. can collect homework if miss lessons

2. daily homework with 1 off day each week. they just give one stack, didn't label for us. I organised for my girl in a folder so she will take 1 set out everyday

3. suppose to complete with 8 to 10 minutes but usually my girl took longer than that, especially if it's a new level. I have a digital clock next to her for her to write start time & completion time

4. no teaching at all. sit individually, self learning. If got stuck then ask teacher. Depending on peak or off peak hours, usually I see around 3 to 5 teacher/helper

following our discussion in another thread, I have finally made the decision to withdraw my girl from Kumon. I feel that she is burned out after 3 years in this intensive programme.

It is an overdue decision because she has been procastinating when doing her homework the last few months. However, I felt so wasted to give up so I kept delaying this decision

She will be collecting her ASHR Gold award next month so we shall treat that as a certificate of her graduation from Kumon

Nevertheless, Kumon is a good programme

Hi,

Does anyone have any extra set of maths worksheet to give away or exchange? I have Kumon English to exchange. Thank you in advance.

Hi All,
My boy aged 4yrs old now is attending Kumon Maths at Tampines Safra. Anyone care to share the difference bet Kumon & Enopi? Thanks!

Tiredmum

My gal turned 3 today and she is attending Kumon now. Per lesson is only 30 min. Per subject is twice a week only. $120. Hope it helps.

hi blur
I only intend to send her for English though they are famous for Maths. Send her only because she has been bugging me to let her go to school, it is the shortest duration class which I am comfortable for her to be without me and it has a non-playgroup environment.

Dun expect a miracle at the end of the day cos it is only 30 mins or even less sometimes and the teacher is teaching different kids with different levels. Parents are the one who do most coaching eventually.

Some centres refuse to accept her as they think she is too young, afraid that she cannot sit still, though I told them she can sit on the chair for more than an hour and can read like K1 - K2's kids. I managed to convince another centre and they did an assessment on her before accepting her less than 3 years old.

Dear All
I am the new mummy here.
can anybody told me what is AHSR?
my son did go to attend the kumon in bukit batok and he really learn a lot and now he is in primary level although he start from the beginner level for math and eng.
appreciate you help

have a nice day
jenny

Hi Jenny,

ASHR mean advance student honour roll. When a kid got bronze, silver and gold means he is in ASHR. Only those who got gold will get a trophy from the annual KUMON Ceremony. There is a chart to meansure how far a child had gone thru.
E.g like my son he is a gold awardee with 4 years advance in Maths learning, meaning he is 4 years ahead his peers in Maths, now he is primary 1 but doing fractions (Pri 4 level).
Feel free to communicate with the person in charge of the center, he/she will be able to give you a more indepth of what is ASHR. Not only that also to ask questions on your child progression. This is how I have been with KUmon since my son is 4, now he is in Pri 1.

Dear all,

Can anyone recommend a good kumon centre for math near East or Centre?

Do you have any insight to share about centre near Guillemard, Siglap Centre, Simei or Bedok?

Thanks a lot

I am also thinking of signing my kid up for Kumon but am wondering if he's too young and if he's suitable. One of the mummies commented while Kumon is good, it's not suitable for one of her girls. My kid is not exactly the 'sit quietly type' although his level of concentration is ahead of his peers.

Anyone has feedback for these Kumon ctr: Toa payoh blk 8, Toa Payoh Blk 85, Tiong bahru plaza, Bt Merah, Novena/Thomson rd?

also, can anyone share on this:

- is each class attended by children of different age group but same level? Or the class can be attended by different age group at different level?
- does the teacher go through the 'syllabus' before doing worksheets? I am wondering cos one mummy commented the lesson is only 30-45min. So short, so still have 'lesson'? or it's purely "come kumon sch and do your worksheet. If stuck, there is teacher to help"?

Hi Samantha,
how old is your child? suggest you send him to the assessment test and trial class and see the response. my child is also not the 'sit quietly type' but i tried kumon cos i noticed his concentration is ahead of his peers like your case. when i attended the orientation/ parent teacher meeting (before sign up) i disliked the place cos it's just shelves and shelves of worksheet. not like the usual childcare centres with bright colours, cartoons, charts and all. this is really like a 'storeroom' with limited space i was thinking 'such a suffocating environment'! however i do not let me own thoughts prevented from bringing boy for the trial (many times i noticed parents 'give up' even before their child - let them try!) and to my delight! he loves it so much!!! when he did the trial he's 2 ys 11 mths and cannnot even hold the pencil properly (they need to 'tick' so pencil grib is kind of required). the good thing is, kumon goes by the child's OWN standards, no 'classmates' to talk about, cos they do their own things... no syllabus also, if your child can do confidently this level, then progress to next and next... all according to your child's own standard and not compared to anyone else. some parents like while others do not. some children suitable while others not. so u need to go down with your child and assess yourself

the teacher will not help as in, will point out it's wrong, and the child is cultivated to find his own answer - this is the indepedence skills that talked abt in kumon. 2 cents worth - HTPs

for your comments on 30-45mins - tat was my initial tot too! n i was so bitter wondering 'wow the teachers make good money huh!' diao. anyway u will be amazed how much a child can learn/ absorb WHEN THEY ARE CONCENTRATING (n this is another skill kumon teaches) in that 30-45 mins. rather than doing homework for HOURS and nothing come out cos they are not concentrating. it's quality time, not quantity. of cos the 'quantity' part comes in when u got to sit down w the child EVERY DAY. tat's what we the parents need to adjust too... again it's about instilling GOOD HABITs
