Congratulations to all the pregnant ladies out there. Just allow me to share my 10-cent worth piece of advice..
Many years ago (while I was doing my psychology course), I received an email that already been forwarded countless of times across different continents. The email shared the so-called thesis by one PhD student from one university in US. The thesis tried to prove why Jewish children are claimed to be so much smarter in mathematics. The writer described his method that is to study the pattern of a pregnant Jewis mother, who happen to be a doctor in one hospital. According to the writer, this mother would spend most of her free time practising and solving mathematical problems. The writer went on to conclude that there is a direct co-relation with the mother's habit and the affect to the feotus in the womb.
Upon reading, I already know this to be a bogus research. I went on to verify all the names listed/quoted including the writer in the said university. There was no such person. Couple of years later, someone actually reported that this research is fake but still in circulation. In my psychology course, we learnt about the experiment by one professor who claimed the positive effect of music to a feotus in a womb. However, this experiment was never repeatable by anyone else successfully to be conclusive.
There are some common sense involved. For those who know the basic human biological prosesses, may not be easily fooled by such claims. What is already known, chemical imbalance, caused by stress or substance (eg tabacco, drug, alcohol, too much sugar) may effect the ph level of the body. Maintaining this balance is important esp during the early formative stage. The body has to allocate more resources to restore the balance, sacrificing most other activities non-vital, including the feotus'. When the body is more acidic, it tends to cling on to more dietary fats and may also cause joint-pains. Reducing stress ie physical as well as psychological during pregnancy as stress is the number one cause of hormonal imbalances and the side effects well-documented. Listening to music, doing activities that are enjoyble, meditation, prayer, chanting, have the benefits of reducing stress. So, if doing maths work for you as stress-relief, continue to do so but please do not expect your baby to be maths-genius
