Help! Gynae dilemma!

Hi Mummies,

This is going to be a long post... Am hoping that some of you will be able to help me out here.

The gynae that delivered my #1 is retiring from delivery so I need to look for a new gynae. Meanwhile, I am still visiting him for routine check-up for #2 (currently 7 weeks) at Mt. Elizabeth Orchard.

Initially I was thinking of going to Dr. Law Wei Seng from Mt. Elizabeth Novena but after inquiring about the cost at his clinic, he seems very costly. His package is $1688 from 20 weeks onwards and that includes only scheduled consultation and normal scans - excludes supplements, additional appointments, etc. Normal delivery fees start from $3.5k.

Then I narrowed down to Dr. Choo Wan Ling from Mt. Elizabeth Novena. Her cost is alright - package is $900 from 20 weeks onwards and normal delivery fees start from $3.4k. Almost the same as my previous gynae... BUT she is going on leave in Dec and the receptionist said it's very risky, she might not be able to deliver for me as my EDD is mid Dec. :(

I'm left with these choices based on my limited research online:

1. Dr. Benjamin Tham from TMC - His cost is well within my range, lower than expected. Package is $900 and starts from 12 weeks onwards, normal delivery fees start from $2k. But I've heard of horror bill shocks from TMC hospital, that there are lots of hidden costs and they charge for everything (e.g. 8 sheets provided during delivery, additional sheets at $3. When I delivered my #1, there was blood all over and they just kept changing sheets but it was FOC at Mt. Alvernia. And at TMC, the labour ward + machines is for up to 7hrs only, subsequent hours will be charged.) Any mummies have experience with TMC before?

2. Dr. Goh Shen Li from Mt. Alvernia - I have not called up for exact cost but it seems to be in the range of Dr. Benjamin Tham from what I read online. Anyone has delivered with her before?

I'm in a dilemma. Any mummies has any feedback or experience to share with regards to Dr. Tham, TMC as a delivery hospital, Dr. Goh Shen Li, or has any other gynae recommendation?

I'm looking for:

- Good, reliable gynae with excellent stitching skills (vaginal/Cesarean). Preferably not the "chop chop" kind, will take time to explain test reports and detailed scans, how baby is doing, etc. Calm and friendly.

- In the price range of: <$1k for packages if it excludes supplements, normal delivery fees max $3k.

- Able to deliver at either Mt. Alvernia or Mt. Elizabeth Novena.

- I don't mind waiting up to 45 mins even during scheduled appointments; I understand that good gynaes tend to be very busy as well but as long as they take the time to understand me as a patient, I'm fine.

- A gynae that is pro-natural birth and will not recommend Cesarean unless absolutely necessary; thus he/she should be good at giving directions on what to do during pushing.

THANK YOU SO MUCH IN ADVANCE! Any feedback will be greatly appreciated!!!

I am actually with Dr Choo and I like her style. Really sorry the timing might be bad for you, but I guess everyone deserves a break from work and that definitely includes our doctors :)

I have close girlfriends who were with Dr Goh and delivered at Mount Alvernia. Looking at your preferences and concerns, I feel Dr Goh is a good match. I hope you can meet her soon and decide swiftly!

Yup, it's a pity about Dr. Choo. It actually never occurred to me that the gynae I choose might possibly be on leave during my EDD. Hahaha. Luckily her receptionist is really good and took the initiative to check on my EDD with me over the phone and raised the concern that Dr. Choo may not be around to help me deliver before confirming my first appointment.

I will call up Dr. Goh's clinic to enquire then. Thank you! :)

Thank you Deeness! I'll call up Dr. Koh and Dr. Teo's clinic and do some research too. Will update this thread!

So are you still seeing Dr. Lim for now? Where do you want to deliver?

Yeah for now before i can find gynae still seeing dr.Lim.

I want to deliver at Mt.Alvernia.

Where do u want to deliver?

Same. Preferably Mount Alvernia. I delivered there for my #1 and the nurses were fantastic. But to widen my options this time round, I don't mind delivering at Mount Elizabeth Novena since it's new and I've read really good reviews. The only place I don't want to deliver is at Thomson Medical Centre because I've heard of too many bill shock stories.

I tried calling the other gynaes recommended but they didn't pick up... guess they were busy. Will try again on Monday and update you.

Hi, my gynea Dr Henry Cheng is delivering in Mount A and Mount E Novena.

Maybe you want to consider him :) his Clinic is at Bishan or at Mount E Novena --- Astra Woman Specialist.

Thank you! I called up his clinic twice today but no-one answered. Will have to try again tomorrow. :(

Hi mummies, just to update this thread...

I managed to call Dr. Goh Shen Li's clinic today and got my questions answered. I also tried to call Dr. Wendy Teo, Dr. Elisa Koh and Dr. Henry Cheng but no-one picked up the phone so I will have to try them again tomorrow.

I will make up my mind by this week and for those mummies who are also watching this thread, here's the status so far:

1. Dr. Choo Wan Ling - Estimated cost is about $5.6k (assuming I get natural assisted birth, this excludes supplements and special scan/tests, excludes hospital fees). She won't be around for 2 weeks in Dec but dates are not confirmed so it's a no go.

2. Dr. Law Wei Seng - Estimated cost is about $6.4k (assuming I get natural assisted birth, this excludes supplements and special scan/tests, excludes hospital fees). He is very expensive. If I end up with Cesarean, my bank will have a huge hole. But he will be around in Dec so for now he is an option.

3. Dr. Benjamin Tham - Estimated cost is about $4k (assuming I get natural assisted birth, this excludes supplements and special scan/tests, excludes hospital fees). He won't be around for 2 weeks in Dec and dates are not confirmed so it's a no go. Am also not keen to deliver at TMC due to bill shock stories from my friends.

4. Dr. Goh Shen Li - Estimate cost is about $5.5k (assuming I get natural assisted birth, this excludes supplements and special scan/tests, excludes hospital fees). She won't be around from 1 to 16 Dec. My EDD is 19 Dec so this is a bit risky but she's an option so far.

Hope this helps.

Hello mummies! For those who've PM-ed me for updates, I shall update in this thread instead of replying everyone one by one. Haha! Sorry for the late response, have been very busy with work.

I've decided to go with Dr. Henry Cheng. His clinic is at Mount E. Novena but I believe he has another clinic somewhere else as well. He delivers at both Mount E. Novena and Mount Alvernia which is perfect for me! For now, he will be available in Dec for my delivery so hopefully it stays this way; the receptionist did mention that there are no plans so far but no promises though.

Honestly, I gave up on trying to find a gynae who will be available in Dec for sure because the truth is, who knows if they'll decide to take leave at the last minute right? It's beyond our control.

So all I did was opt out those gynaes who have confirmed leaves/high chance of taking leave in Dec (which is a lot of them!), then narrowed it down to those who can deliver at either Mount E. Novena or Mount Alvernia and has many good reviews.

Hope this helps! :)

What is the price for Dr henry Cheng?

Is there any package price and how many weeks does he start to see pregnant ladies?

His first consultation is from $120 to $150 depending on how long the session is. A normal scan is around $80. These exclude GST and whatever supplements he will want you to take.

Subsequent consultation is $80 or $100 (if I didnt remember wrongly... the receptionist did tell me but I can't remember off hand).

He has a package for 20 weeks onwards. My husband and I actually didn't ask for too much details in terms of money since we've decided that a good doctor, his chances of availability in Dec and the hospital of delivery is more important. I can update you again after seeing him at the next appointment and getting more details.

By the way, the clinic we go to is at Mount E. Novena so I'm not sure if it's the same price compared to going to his other clinic in Bishan.

From what I know, he is not cheap but not expensive. He falls in the mid range. With my previous gynae, I paid $3600 just for assisted natural birth alone for my #1. And each visit was $200 to $300. And that was 3 years ago. So I used this as a comparison. :)

Hi CHH_Mummy, may I know if you have gotten the antenatal package and delivery prices yet? I am currently with Dr. Wendy Teo at Mount E Novena but she will be on leave in Dec and my EDD is mid Dec too :( so I am currently looking for another gynae at Mount E Novena with reasonable rates.

Hi there! Yes I have... his pre-natal package is $950 before GST for once a month visits from 20 weeks onwards. For additional unscheduled visits, you will have to pay for consultation and scan as per normal. :)

My EDD is in Dec so its okay. I went to his clinic last saturday and asked if I could transfer under him. but when he found out who is my current gynae, he said he couldn't take me because conflict of interest :(

I suggest going to the Mount E. Novena website and look through their entire list of gynae. Then call up the clinics to check which of them will be around in Dec. Has to be around for the whole of Dec because you'll never know if you'll deliver early or late... EDDs are not 100% accurate.

Then Google those who are around in Dec to see if you can find any reviews on them.

I like him so far... I haven't delivered but all's on track for natural birth so far, so I'm not sure about his charges for C-Sect.
