Autistic children - Share your experiences here.

Hi Mummies! Just stumbled on this thread. Have a turning 5 yo son with Autism. Wondering if anyone ever engaged a shadow teacher and knows the charges? Also has anyone placed an Autistic child in mainstream pri school and can share their experiences? Got 2 more years to go before my son goes to pri1 and not too sure if should listen to his current therapists to put him in mainstream school - can't help worrying if he can cope or the teachers (for that matter) can cope!

yvonne,
i think it's good sign if the current therapists think he can go to mainstream... why not let him try out first..

Hi momoto,
how was the meet up with ARN? Have you decided to chose them for the ABA?

what is the rate per hour and how many sessions required per week/ month?

hi all......

So nice to see the thread is moving again....

Does any1 here know where can i find a child care centre whose has teachers who can help in training of our ASD kids??? Or any centre that accept the ASD beside those mentioned in the earlier thread???

My son is attending the rainbow centre now but the child care centre was rather is normal centre., the teachers from the rainbow centre would prefer us to send our son to a ASD specialist centre where is better for my son. I am trying to look for one now...

Hi Kath,

There ain't many childcare centres that specialised in ASD kids. The closest I've heard of are the Integrated Child Care programme. Even then I heard the waiting list is very long.

Are you looking for a half day or full day childcare? My son is currently in half day special school program and half day ABA therapy. The special school takes in ASD kids as well as other kids with early difficulties such as language delay. It is a private school, thus the fees are on a steep side. But I've no regrets sending him there. He is adjusting very well and I know that he is in good hands since the teachers there are well trained to take care of such kids. Moreover, in a group setting, he has the opportunity to learn to interact with other kids. He used to be in a normal childcare and the teachers usually leave him alone when he does not comply.

Hi Kay Kay,

The meet-up with the ARN was fine, they mentioned that we could either take the intensive 5 days (mon-fri) three hour therapy, or the minimum 3 days a week, per session of 3 hrs is S$135.00 iirc....

chances are we will choose them for the ABA therapy......

fluffy......thank you so much for your post.... where is the place??? Can give me the contact??? I am looking for a 3/4 day one if possible.... as my son will need to attend the Rainbow centre programme in the morning by 10plus, hope to move him to child care centre....

Hi Yvonne....thank you so much .... appreciated that.... i will check it out

Hi Kath,

Not a problem. My son is currently in Genesis School for Special education. The half day programme is fr 9-12pm. Full day is up till 3pm I think. They are more like a school and not so much of child care. And they follow the school holidays as fixed by MOE. If you are still keen to find out more, can call Angie at 6733 1172. The staffs there are generally quite nice pple. : )

dear all

so happy to see this thread "alive" again....

How about st gerard's school ? they seem to run an integrated special needs programme. any comments?

thanks!

hi Ying Ying,

I have spoken to this parent couple of days ago. His son is currently in St Gerard's. You may want to check with him? I did consider the school previously but then its quite a distance from where I stay so I did not call to find out more also.

You want to PM me so that I can forward your query to him and you guys can take it off from there?

Hi everyone...
I just stumble upon this portal...and my son has just been confirmed ASD and is attending early intervention at St Gerard's...
I am from Malaysia and have been in singapore since JAn1 2010...
My son has been suspected of ASD when he was 2 yrs 3months...because I knew something was wrong...and insisted to bring him to see a developmental specialist..but in Malaysia...awareness is really low...and most of the Peadiatrics that I brought him to said to wait till he is 3 before I get worried...but I was very sure he needs help...so I brought him to see a doc at 2yrs3mths....and then started speech and occupational therapy since then...
till today ( he is now 3yrs 1 month old)....his speech is close to zero and although he has improved in other ways...I feel so lost....I just cant wait for him to utter a word...

Hi EeVonne,

Are you working here ? my son too is suspected of asd, and supposed to go for consultation with KKH's Children Development Unit in May, before any formal assessment, he has attended the ST and OT at kkh.... and ABA starting in end of this March..... I know how you feel totally, I was so down and sad too...... but we have to be strong for our kids .... esp when we have other kids too

Hi Ying, I am the father who talked to Fluffy. My son is in St Gerards. Please email me at [email protected] if you need more info.

Hi EeVonne, Can you also get in touch with me to discuss more about our boy in St Gerard?

Hi Momto3, I have also contacted ARN for ABA. I wonder you can contact me as well.

Hi Ying Ying,

Sorry for the late reply. I just returned to work from my maternity leave and this week has been crazy. I do feel v guilty towards my boy as I'm spending so little time with him now.

Alan, I read your blog on your son. Nicely done. Actually your son is very adorable and has good eye contact. Moreover he is also starting to talk. That is a very good sign.

Ee Vonne, i also suspected something wasn't right before he turned 2 years old. But the PD was like better to wait till 2.5 yrs old onwards to be assessed. My son also started OT and speech initially. I dropped speech therapy later on and subsequently moved on to ABA. He is still non verbal now, though producing more sounds and approximations of sounds upon request. I feel v lost at times and sometimes wonder if he will ever talk. My friends have been consoling me and assured me that I've done my best and not to think so much. It is through speaking to parents like us that make me feel a lot better as we can totally understand what each other is going through.

Hi Fluffy & EE Vonne
Like yourselves , i m also v depressed at times... in fact , of late, i get depressed all the time... and i do get increasingly frustrated (& exhausted) esp now that my son is already 3 and still has no speech (just like Ee vonne's case).

I think for many of us, speech is the most worrying case. Somehow i feel i won't be so depressed if my son can talk... i mean , i feel more "confident" working on him if he at least have some decent speech...

Hi Alan,
Many Thanks - I've emailed u

hi all,

sad to know that there are more ASD kids ard...
That is the inital stage that you feel lost & dont know where/how to help your kids.... i think most of us went thro' this stage...even till now i also do feel lost & thinking how can i help my son to improve....althought he has made some improved but more new behaviour came out as well & there is also not much of speech coming out from my son too....

Anyone has any ST to recommend????

sorry everyone..didnt have time to reply anybody....been very busy since my both my kids plus myself fell sick...has been really crazy time...
Anyways, Alan...my number is 82237265 or [email protected] can contact me if you need to..yes my son is enjoying St Gerards and I think the teachers are doing a good job there...

Kath: I have a speech therapist coming to my condo every week....and my son adores her...maybe you want to try her???let me know if you want to get hercontact number...

oh yees...it is wonderful to hear from other ASD parents...and I am glad I am not alone....

I am a SAHM...and I try working on my son everyday ( or every minute if possible)...but somethings I feel totally lost...

I am so glad to hear from you all...

eevonne

what does the speech therapist do to help the child improve?

My boy is 4+ now. He started talking at 2.5yrs old. Now he can finally speak in sentences but it's still not comprehensible sometimes.

His fine motor skills are also very poor, can't colour properly and can't write well even though he's in K1 already. Anyone has recommendations of a therapist for that?

Actually he displayed all the traits of ASD that was mentioned earlier, like spinning toys, speech delay and doesn't like to talk. Till now, he only talks to pp he trusts aka me and my hb and prob his teacher. He ignores the rest of the world. He's reading very well for his age though and can count very well too. His teachers said he has a very good memory as he can recognise the words/characters very quickly after looking at the flashcards. So i guess, it's not autism bah.

Hi Eevonne,

Yes, I am also glad that there's this thread so that we know we are not isolated...... may I know do you ferry your boy to school as the location of the school is kinda far from my place
sad.gif
......

Mashy: the therapist basically works on my son's speech...trying to get him to engage in play first ( to improve his eye contact)....now giving him verbal and non verbal prompts for him to produce to desired sound....the therapist teaches me how to play with him and how to encourage him to try to communicate....from pics to sign languages...

momto3: yes i ferry my son to school everyday to and fro..his school is just next to hubby's office....so i ferry both of them everyday....:p

Hi Ee Vonne
May I ask how much does your speech therapy charge for each session? If you don't mind, pls can u PM me her number? Keen to give it a shot since my son is non-verbal

Thanks.

Has any mommies that has genetic disorder/global development delay like my 3rd son besides autistic child, now he is 3yrs 2mths, still unable to speak, can demand what he want and follow simple instructions.
One thing I am glad that he went for follow up like ST/OT/ENT/etc check up/medication is free, as I make payments for registration fee. Like u all, I feel stressed, depressed and lost, being a housewife of 4 sons, 7,5,3+ and 20mths.

Many times I have to neglect my 3rd son, I feel that hurt and pain,I tried very best to with him when i am available, but i am really tired physically and mentally.
My family situation do not allow him to go for schooling.
Do u have any mommies they are homeschooling the special need child.
Can u share with me how u manage the time and teaching.
And what is utmost impt that we must give for this child to learn most.
Do u have mommies can share with me how to cope with household chore at the same time teach normal child and special child when u have more childn.
Sorry for being asking so much....at least i feel that i am not alone there.....

hi my son turns 5 tis year, in k1. like most of autistic kids here, he couldn't talk much at 3, but now he is talking alot and he learned alot from his younger bro, who is normal. both of them play happily together at most times and sometimes quarrel and fight too. i do think that siblings companion is very important to autistic child..
he is also attending twice a week intervention session with Autism Resource Centre (located together with pathlight school at ang mo kio). This centre is really very good.. can check their website.. do not be put off by the high fees as they provide substantial subsidy for the needy families.. also do not be put off when they claim is long waiting list.. do call the school directly and it seem that they will try to accommodate most parents.
he also go to normal k1 every morning. i think if your child's condition is mild, is important to send him to normal school whereby he learns to interact with kids at a young age. personally i think is easier to mix with normal kids at young age rather than older age as children will be more socialy aware as they get older..they might 'sense' that he is different from them etc..

I agree with you, Tam. My son (with global developmental delay and autistic tendency) has been attending usual kindergarten classes and doing OT/ST weekly. Although he still has challenges in more complex verbal communication with his peers, they have got on very well. He even has several good friends at school! Now we are moving to Singapore. I hope the new school will also be a place he enjoys.

recently i came across an article -- it says if we are able to detect and correct the problem at few months old, it is highly likely that the autism is reversible cos our brain is highly reprogrammable before 12 to 18 months!!

sigh.. we suspected that he was autistic before 2 and keep on asking the child care teachers/principals and even shichida instructors (cos we send him in at 18mths).. but no one think that he is! we really regretted and hope that we can be more kiasu... but he was our first child and we were really not sure. now we have our second one, we realise how different they were when they were babies!! my second one was very 'engaging' with us and maintain many many eye contacts and keep on trying to get our attention while my first was physically active and seem 'busy' kicking aimlessly at most times..

Hi Tam,

I agree, in a certain way, its blessing that they have siblings as we cant 'communicate' at their level
happy.gif
ARC seems good but too far from where I resides
happy.gif

Hi Jean,

I was wondering did you sign up for any eipic prog ? Maybe you could put your son there, and get some sort of intervention for him ? just my opinion
happy.gif

hi Tam,

I suspected by son to be autistic before 2 as well...but like your case, everyone says that he is fine and that every child is different....
I too sometimes think that if only I have followed my gut feel..things would be better...

Yee.....my son is in Rainbow at Margaret Drive.... teachers there shld be the same..... good & patience teachers..... dont delay ....sign or quene in the EPIC centre....no point to wait w/o in the quene....

adeline....that centre in bishan right???? We have visited tat centre b4....seem like the program r not bad....u may wan to try... We did not enrol our son in that cetnre as the timing is not so good to me....

Hi kath tan,

Yes, I will put my younger son there while waiting for CEL to contact me.
Any one have any experience with that Divinity Especial Needs Intervention Centre? He has ben diagnose as moderate ASD and I'm expecting my 3rd baby and hence very worried for him.
