Any Good Child Care in Yio Chu Kang

My 2 boys will be staying with my in law in YCK probably in May or June and I wish to place them in the nearby child care centre. Very xian lah, need to search for new child care. Any recommendation in the area? Don't wish to go for any franchise childcare. Too commercialise. Feel they are all out for $ only and kids don't learn much. Wanted something more cosy, spacious and homely...Well, you know, all boys love to run around...ha ha, my boys are wild.

Anyone can help...quit desperate now cos time is running short.

Hi cute,

i have the same frustation as you. i can understand the predicament you are in. I am also trying to find a good childcare centre for my gal. Personally i do not like franchise cos my gal is in a franchised childcare now at YCK and i seriously do not like the school environment and its way of teaching.

Anyway, if anyone know of any good childcare centre at YCK to recommend, kindly pm me.

thanks

Hey mummies,

There are a few childcare centres at Yio Chu Kang like Learning Vision and Carpe Diem. There is another coming up at Yio Chu Kang Road I think. I just saw the big banner when I drive pass Yio Chu Kang Road 2 days ago, just opposite the Condominium next to Upper pierce reservoir.

You may be keen to go there take a look. Carpe diem is there too. You can see both centres together if you want.

thank clarice and jane for your sharing. Well, been super busy in the search of child care and at work.

Clarice, which franchise centre you enrol your child? Able to share? I have very bad experience in My First Skool. My boys were there for a year and learn almost nothing. Just play and play. Since there, i dare not opt for franchise centre. Since you are searching for one, we share our finding ok. Maybe we can enrol our kids in the same centre, ha ha...they become classmates and we become friends.

Jane, the centre that you mentioned is it up a narrow road? I heard from my hubby too but he refused to help me go up the centre to check. He keeps saying this is women's job...really very frustrating. When i told him i am taking half day leave tomolo to find child care centre, guess what, he said I am so free. Well, don't understand why men are always like that.

Anyway, i don't remembered there is a centre near Carpe Diem. As for Carpe Diem, I been there a couple of month ago, looks very interesting cos many animals, but when it come to curriculum, i feel it is very weak. I looked at the children there i don't feel they are happy. Maybe i should go and take a look again and also take the opportunity to the other new centre. Any idea is it in operation?

Guess what, my fren who resides in AMK said not many good centres in YCK area. Hence, cannot be choosy, should give franchise schools another chance...

Well, time to go home, share with you guys tomolo if i am home early. Hope tomolo afternoon search will be fruitful. Ha ha, i don't believe her. Try my luck tomolo.

hi cute,

i share your sentiment too. This is really not easy to find a good school near to YCK. My gal was enrolled in one of the franchise, which i dun think it is nice to name the centre here. You may want to pm me if u want to know more. That centre is near to AMK industrial park and really a big franchise. The centre is transformed from an old school, looks super old and dilapidated. The classrooms are dirty and torned down. Worst still, the childcare fee that they charge is not cheap either. The curriculum is not fantastic too. most of the time, they leave my child doing her own thing in the classroom. When i compare her with my nephew who is of the same age, he is doing better in terms of speech and also the vocabulary that he knows. YCK doesn't have many centres at that time so without much option, i have to enrol my gal there. Hence, it is very frustrating now that my gal is not learning much from that centre. i think i really have to move on and send her to another centre.

jane, may i know which is the centre that you are referring to? is it near to the famous roti prata place? i am keen to look at that centre.

Cute, would u be keen to join me in looking at that centre? pm me ok so that we can arrange a day to take a look. I am not keen in going for any franchise childcare centre anymore as there is no guarantee of quality in education service that they provide. Franchise childcare centres are too commercialsied!

hope to hear from you soon.

Hi ladies,

I am looking to register my 2 year old into Nursery programme for her to play/socialise and hopefully learn more.

Can anyone recommend a good one around YCK/Upper Thomson/AMK area please?

Am actually thinking of Kinderland at YCK.....but having second thoughts now.

Tks v much!

Ladies. If u dont mind the travelling n fees. I wld highly recommand my boy's sch at amk ave4. Character montessori. =))

Hi peiling, yr kid is 2yrs old? U may wanna consider the centre my boy's in now. He has been with them since 2mths old n promote from infant class to prenursery1 at 17plus mth n just celebrated his 2nd birthday in jun.
Im very happy with their programmes n all, esp since they started the sch blog for us parents to b updated on their mthly theme n lessons. What i like most abt this sch is their concept of teaching gd values n morals. For me, these r much more impt than any other knowledge cos this grooms the child character n with positive attitude the child wld b able to pass through any obstacles in his future path.
Lessons wise, as im not so particular, i donno the exact programmes. But im happy enough that my boy comes hm with new words n songs everyday. I guess thats enough to show the teachers r doing their job. He can even correct my eng when i said painpain (baby language), he said no its painful. They has like different programme everyday, speech n drama, singing n dancing (i donno the term), n nature walk (on thurs!), the other two im not sure cos im only interested in the three that i mentioned, im really not particular abt these la, so long my child shows progress. =P
Food wise, the centre introduce brown rice n wholemeal bread. Most imptly, they allow the toddler to have their milk!! Im mentioning this cos im really surprise when my collegue told me her girl after promoting to toddler class has only 1milk feed cos 'the teachers where got time'.. My boy still has his two milk feed, one lunch n one tea break. Milk is very important for kids, to me la.
Hygience wise, they have aunties who is always cleaning things whenever i c them.. They clean the matteress daily after nap also. The kids r 'trained' to wash their hands that even on weekends my boy will also ask to wash his hands n insist i wash mine. -.-''
Other than these basic things, i have at least 101 stories to share abt this sch. I donno y a gd sch like this is like not well-known.. Guess cos they dont 'promote' their centre very much.. N another reason i suspect wld b the location.. Ave4 itself is not along the main rd like amk ave3 or ave1. N also, its abit of walking distance from the nearest busstop to the sch. So it may not b as accessible as those along the main rd or near mrts or in the malls..

Hi Cindy, thanks for the recommendation. First time I heard of Amk ave 4 montessori. Will check it out...

I agree with you about the focus on values being the most important. In fact, it is the socialisation which I want my gal to have. No man is an island, and better to learn that early in her life.

Xie xie ni.

Dont mention it~ i think as parents we really hope that can a sch that has responsible n gd teachers that we can trust our kids safety to. =))
Drop by go c c the kids there! So far those i c, they dont 'snatch' or 'fight' over toys. My boy just learnt to share lately, still can teach me to share. Agree with u, reminds me of the chopstix story. One chopstix breaks easily ten chopstix hard to break. But sadly, nowadays not many parents bother bout all these. They r so eager for their kids to learn everything except values. Hais...

Hi Cindy,

From where I stay in YCK road, AMK Ave 4 Character montessori is abt 10 min car ride. Will definitely check it out for real.

Am also considering
a. Kinderland at YCK: some second thoughts now though
b. Carpe Diem at Thomson
c: Cherie Hearts at YCK or Thomson

Anyone mummies or daddies with any feedback?
Tks in advance!

Hi peiling, tried sending u a pm but unable to..

U visited the school already??
Any feedback?

The director who is a Master in Early Childhood Education would be conducting a talk-like workshop at the amk branch on 17th sept 9.30-11.30am.
Tix is @ $15 each parent, but if i bring another mummy along we'll only have to pay $5 each. You can go to the link below for more info. Let me know if ya interested to attend.

Hi, I have visited the childcare at 39 cactus crescent, Discovery Garden. The place is big and spacious. From my understanding, they have small teacher to child ratio. They have also access to the big soccer field at the back of the school and the place looks neat and tidy. Maybe because it is new. The teachers look pleasant and the principal is approachable and friendly. Probably will consider putting my son there after my discussion with my hubby

Hi patsyc, my girl has just joined discovery garden at cactus crescent. She enjoyed the classes tremendously. The teachers are warm and caring. The school bus auntie is very caring and responsible too.

Hi Phobe,
How long has your girl been at Discovery garden at cactus? Which level is she in?
I am thinking of putting my girl in discovery garden too but haven't decided on the hilltop or cactus centre.

How do u find the curriculum there? Care to share wat ur girl learn there?

Hi bethel, my girl joined in Dec. her feedback was she enjoyed herself everyday. she's at cactus. curriculum good as i felt it prepare child for p1. u can walk in and enquire their curriculum. Furthermore, they encourage outdoor play and no tv. personally i felt cactus better as i feel hilltop a bit stuffy and supervisor not so sincere

I visited discovery garden at cactus last week and I quite liked it. can't tell much about their curriculum though. but teachers are warm and pleasant. and the place is spacious and clean. probably would have less mosquitoes than the one at hilltop.the thing that concerns me a bit is that they only have a few staff for now. might be a problem if they expand fast or if one of the teachers falls sick/takes leave.

Hi Phobe, since your girl joined, have you encountered any situation whereby they are short of staff? and do you find the teachers patient and experienced?

And Bethel, have you checked out carpe diem @ hilltop as well? if so how do you compare that to the discovery garden?
tks =)

Hi Angela,

I have visited carpe diem @ hilltop some time back. The place looks good and the kids look very happy there.
However, i didn't decide to place my girl there cos they are full up to 2013 which means i might have to wait till 2014.
And to put yourself on the waiting list, you got to pay the deposit of abt $1K++.
I wasn't willing to do that cos i haven't really decided on which childcare to put my girl in.
I have yet to visit Discovery Garden @ hilltop so haven't made a comparison to Discovery Garden @ Cactus.

Have you enrolled your child? Which Childcare u chosed?

Hi,
I'm also keen to put my boy (Pre-Nursery) at Discovery Garden at Cactus after visiting the centre. Will let my boy go for the trial class before deciding.

Any feedback on the teachers ? They are mostly young, single and without kids so not sure if they are experience in handling kids well.

HI,
Just wanted to share my feedback about the childcare centres i've visited recently:
- Chiltern House Halifax: appealing classrooms, and known for (CH in general) building very confident kids. Interior of the school was rather cramp and noticed that english speaking teachers were mainly malays, indians and philippinos . Only offers 3hr program therefore no option for full day.
- Pat's Serangoon and Aroozoo: i know many friends whose kids are at Pats and most have given positive feedback about kids being generally happy and teachers are dedicated and good. The compounds at Serangoon and Aroozoo are both quite impressive, look clean, new and large. Serangoon is open air and classrooms are open ie not enclosed with door, that means that one class may likely be distracted by a neighbouring class. Aroozoo on the other hand is air-conditioned and each classroom is a room on its own. The curriculum is very play-based (that explains the happy children)and good for developing the social-emotional aspects, i find them quite light on academic though. Heard that they are looking to stop the bundled programs (swimming, keyboard lessons etc) too. Price is steep at FD $1300 after subsidy.
- Chatsworth Kindergarten: Nice and large compound, large emphasis on social-emotional development, environmental awareness and impressive outdoors (playground, cycling track,sandpit,motor-skills equipments, labelled garden) use of computers/technology in k2, little use of worksheets. Very play-based and no daily chinese lessons (N2 onwards, at N1, there is 1 Chinese teacher always in the class).
- House of Kids (Dedap Rd)- nephew is there and enjoys school, teachers appear v friendly. Use letterland phonics and start at n1. what i didn't like though was that his daily communications book written by a teacher (hopefully the assistant) was littered with grammatical errors and they end each day watching television (cartoons).
- Discovery Garden (Hilltop and Cactus)- Curriculum is rich (balance of play and academic) and they make good use of the outdoor open space. The have a weekly checklist of areas which the teacher is supposed to teach, including moral/character developmental areas. They also map out themes to be covered during the year, therefore curriculum appears quite structured. Seem to emphasize alot on teacher-parent communication. By K1, half day dedicated to chinese speaking activites. Enrichment programs (no extra charge) like gym and speech/drama are conducted by external specialists. Kids appear happy and friendly with visitors.Teachers looked quite young and may not have alot of experience.
- Cambridge At Saracca: Been around for many years and apparently low teacher turnover. while they are branded under Cambridge, in reality, they are run quite independently. Center-head explained that she'd modify the worksheets so that children are better prepared for P1. Focus on experiential learning and themes are based on the books used in their reading program. Classes are led by 2 main teachers (as opposed to usual set up of 1 main and 1 assistant. Music/keyboard lessions conducted by Seimpi Music. They seem to have large proportion of non-directed play time though.
Character Montessori (AMK) - curriculum and montesori methods looked convincing but the compound is v old and run-downed. Fully indoor, 1 classroom divided into 3 classes by shelves (for N1/N2), the indoor echo i feel would be distracting for another class when one class is having lessons.

hi, long time never post, thought no longer need to search a child care in YCK. My husband, after much quarrel and arugment, still decided to place my 2 boys in my in law's place in AMK...Super frustrating, i really hate it to place my boys in my in law's place, not to mention finding child care centre again...anyone can share my sorrow...sigh...

thanks for all the sharing... has to go about my search for the child care again...my hubby decided to place them in YCK child care centre this dec or jan next year...

Anyone can share on carpe diem@hilltop and discovery garden after all these while...so far, only visited these 2 centres in early 2012, any much changes? My hubby is keen on these 2 centres...discovery garden got another branch, according to the discovery garden principal..mrs..i cannot remember, sophia or so..something...I like their set up, very open and the staff there are very friendly. Kids seems happy. Though the teachers there are young, the kids seems to be learning. So any feedback on this discovery centre...

As for carpe diem, really not too keen on any franchise centre...still have reservation and doubts...but any update for me...will visit these 2 centres next week...
