Advice on mastitis

Hi,

Currently diagnosed with mastitis. Fever was as high as 40.2 for the last two days. There were two red patches on my breast which were still painful now. I'm on antibiotics for a day already with fever reducing med. LC said it's weird that the red patch didn't go away after I pump. For ladies who had mastitis before, what do you think?

massage your breasts from the red patch to the nipple to remove the blocked ducts. (note: it will hurt.) Sometimes pumping is of no use.

hmm when i had mastitis back then, i had to go and draw pus out every day...

Wait over the weekend and if it doesn't go away, you might want to go and consult a specialist?

Hi Tulipstarzz...im also gotten mastitis right now. No more fever but on antibiotic. Do u continue feed baby while on antibiotic? I also notice supply drop alot. Wonder if its caused by antibiotic or paracetamol. After recover is your supply came back?

Princeethan : it's like that. Supply will drop but you can build it up again.

Please continue to pump out and avoid further infection... I had abcess after mastitis when it was not treated well and quick enough...

I had fever and painful breast last week. Fever as high as 39.6. Took panadol and fever came down. 2 days later, Kenna fever again and pain and lump on same breast. Again, took panadol to bring down fever. The next day, same thing happened but to the other breast. All in all, had fever 3 x in a week. Did not see dr or take anti biotics. My SS dropped drastically. Wonder will it go up and how long?

You probably have mastitis. Try putting hot compress around your breast and then massage firmly especially the lump area. Fever means there is an infection. It can be very painful, especially when you massage. Nursing might help you to clear some of the blocked ducts. Else, see a GP.

I stopped BF after my episode with Mastitis because my baby was almost 7 months, and the lump didn't go away; and the affected side only yield 20% of the usual amount. 2 weeks after stopping, the lump completely disappeared.

Hi frog princess

I thought it was just blocked ducts. I massage, pump and latched my baby hoping will clear the blockage.The localized pain on breast not there any more.
My baby only 6w old. I hope to bf longer. So want to have my SS back. My SS now is 1/3 of my previous Amt.
Just wondering, if it's mastitis, and i didn't take anti biotics, could the infection still there? Will it damage my breast permanently?

you might not need antibiotics but best be seen by a lactation consultant, or a breast doctor. I know of a female one at Glen E. But private docs not cheap, hor... wanna try? PM me.

FYI, for my case, pain disappeared but lump maintained. Milk reduced one side.

Just continue to latch at frequent intervals and check for blocked ducts. Supply should go up. If it does not, the blocked duct may not have fully cleared.

In my first 4 months of breastfeeding, I had mastitis 3 times!!!! The final time i went to see a specialist. It turns out I had a blocked duct near the nipple area that did not clear out. (I expressed instead of latch). In the end, she actually had to cut a small hole and squeeze the milk, now cheese, out. I took antibiotics, all 3 times.

My supply went down to almost zero when I had blocked ducts when baby was 3 weeks old. I tried using cabbage to reduce the supply so that it will not clog up the ducts. In the end, no more milk for me. I had to start from almost zero. I build up my supply by pumping/latching every 2 hourly. Managed to get back my supply and in the end, I had over supply!

I saw the LC at Mt A but my case was more serious, was recommended to see Dr Joy Lee (breast surgeon based at Mt A) to remove the 'cheese' and clear the infection.

hihi ann.. understand that u went through a session with dr joy lee. did she manage to remove your abscess? mine was really huge like 7cm i think. =(
