(2002) Any 2002 babies?

yawn yawn

Yeah this is what i think also, as my girl time is quite pack with all the tuition, if still got swimming might be too hard for her. Tks for your advice.

Yawn,
I agree with you. Joining a CCA should be for the interest of it and not for DSA. Of cos if she excels and likes it, then it is bonus. Otherwise, it will become a drag for the kid. Btw what cca is your gal taking now?

Pin - no lah, I did not take too much effort cos I was also reading on DSA stuff. My P2 has been selected to join Dance club as the niche ECA. She is very keen to take up but I am having 2nd thought, as the CCA requires her to have 4hrs of training weekly ie staying back at sch until 6pm twice a week..plus swimming and her weekend ballet class and other activities..I am not sure if she has time for study. I make her promise me that she will maintain her band1 results after taking up the CCA..otherwise she has to quit dancing. Now she is in P2..homework is still manageable, dunno how she will cope when she goes P3 and upper pri level.
In fact I thought it will be sufficient for her to take either dance CCA in sch or her pte dance in CC. But my gal refused to quit either..hiaz

bebe75,
my son has been 'selected' to join Robotics club as niche CCA. he was keen before being told that the CCA requires him to have 6 hours training weekly (stayback at sch until 5pm twice a week...yours should be more hours, no?) and also school holidays need to go back if they are involved in competition. he wanted to give up without trying. told him that i will 'help' him juggle his CCA commitment and academic but he must promise to cooperate with me (ie no whining). told him that i will accept acceptable band 2 results if i can see that he puts in effort to juggle both. we will review again whether to continue with the CCA after one year (apparently, my neighbour's son was also previously in Robotics in the same school (had won award for some competition before). he now joins the basketball team.)
i personally feel that so long there is no lock-in compulsory years of commitment, no harm trying out first.

FZ - my gal's training will start from 330pm to 530 or 4pm to 6pm. She has chinese remedial and chinese S&D from 2 to 4pm or 230 to 330pm on some days. I am worried that she is unable to cope with such long hours. I have heard that their dance training is very physically demanding as the instructor does not give break in between, and they have high expectation of the dancers to get gold medal in competition and distinction in the RAD exam. Even with the dance CCA, I will prefer her to take RAD exam outside the school cos I heard that gals that did not get distinction will be "blacklisted". I do not want her to have undue stress. As I try to find out more abt dance CCA, I hear more horrifying tales (esp abt the difficulty to quit) and now regret my decision to submit the consent form.
I told my gal if she does well in her study..she can go to any good secondary sch. But if she does well only in dancing, she can only choose a few good sch..hence it is more important to do well in study.

Today my P3 gal took the dyslexia screening test and the result indicated that she has low probability of dyslexic. However, when I spoke to the psychologist about the problem I face when I coach her in her work, she said these are signs of possible dyslexia but my gal may be smart enough to use other skills (compensating skills) to overcome them. It may seem that she is coping fine at this stage, but as she moves up to upper primary, P4, P5 - she will have problems coping in the study. She recommends that I send her for full assessment. I am deliberating if I shd proceed further.

Bebe
My gal was in Dancesport since P1 their training is quite intensive and time consuming due to competition (local & oversea) and SYF too. She wanted to quit since early of this year so I let her quit and I didn't regret as she has more time to do her school and tuition work.

fz
My dd is the opposite from your ds. She over estimated her time management skills. She took a long time just to get into bathroom for a shower, then took 20 minutes to bathe, another 15 minutes to change, 45 minutes to eat her lunch slowly, by the time she settles down to start doing homework, 2 hours had passed! If I hurried her, she started crying.
Yet she wants to sign up for so many things. I've been saying NO NO NO. Plan to stop her drama class end of this year

maisy
My dd is in chinese club. Once a week only till 4pm. Kanna 'scolded' by teacher in charge of overall CCAs for changing CCAs every year. This is dd's 3rd CCA. Teacher said must stick to this CCA till p6, not allowed to switch anymore.

oh bebe,
your girl's schedule is really really tight! really pity these kids nowadays!
but then again, i told my husband that i don't mind such punishing schedule for my boy if he goes onto secondary school because i don't want him to have to much spare time on hand to do internet networking, go out with friends or get a girlfriend too early!

FZ - sometimes I am so worn out sending them up/down various classes..my calendar are filled with their activities (gals have different activities/timing)..find myself even more busier than before when I was working full time.

Natellehcim - I have juz sent you the remaining exam papers and the answer..do let me know if you need help..once again, thanks for co-ordinating

i did not get the chance to go to the PTM as i was on biz trip. My DS is the fifth in position in class. I was pretty suprised with this result.
Come back on sunday and quicky took a look on his paper. Near vomitted blood with the careless mistakes that he made for Maths and English.

English : All comprehension answered in Present tense. Already reminded him so many times and he still do the same silly mistakes. Lost 2.5 marks unneccessary.
As for composition, I did not get to know his marks but I guess his failed his composition as it was out of point. Topic for is a A snatching Theif but he end up writing Robbery. "Fainted" He did pretty well for his paper 2 but overall was being pull down by composition...
Maths : Went thru all the mistakes he made. He did all the working correctly but duno why when he write the answer wrongly. Or else he will get at least 95-98 for maths.
Chinese. He did badly for paper 2. Espically for section 2 but i was very suprised that he scored pretty well for paper 1 with the oral...I tot the he will get band 3 for Chinese coz he told he he got 35/50 for paper 2.

Overall he shown improvement this year so I am going to reward him with Ipad2 as I told him if he is able to score ave 85% I will get him one.

Hi bebe75,
yes ack receipt. I will gather what I've received so far and send out to those mummies who had contributed. these few days

Hi mummies,

My thoughts for CCAs is that, let them focus on one main one, and even if it is representing the school with longer hours, go for it! I find kids with a strong bond to the schools through CCAs tend to perform better academically too. CCAs are also very strong platforms to help develop time management skills, networking skills, leadership skills, etc. Like fz says, if they have too much time on their hands, they may either surf the net at home or when they are in sec sch, will start going out with friends (dunno desirable or non desirable!) or start dating younger! Whereas if they start a foundation of participating keenly in CCAs from pri sch, this "habit" may continue on to sec sch and beyond, which allows them to have more productive usage of time.

Whereas if we keep them at home and just focus on academic studies (tuition, enrichment, etc), our kids may end up very one-dimensional.

Perhaps the trick is to find one CCA that our kids really like, which gives them fulfillment and happiness, and not have too many different CCAs. My dd is in the school performing team of ballet, and she derives a lot of satisfaction from it. Sometimes their practices are 2 to 3 times a week, 2-hour each, esp if there are dance exams or performances coming up, but I take these as destressing sessions for her, and makes sure she finishes her work on these days after the sessions. She also has tennis as her CCA but I discouraged her to try for the school team for this, just play for fun and focus on one school-team CCA. She also has weekend ballet and piano, but I take these as destressing activities too. Hence, most important, our kids must enjoy such activities and not be stressed out by them.

And yawn yawn is right in saying that do not use CCAs just to work towards DSA, rather, ask our kids what interest them...

I used to work in an admissions dept of a local public university for a long time - top students typically have a whole plethora of CCAs and even outside-school community activities. And for top faculties like Law, Medicine, etc, top students without CCAs or outside-school activities are often not admitted after their interviews despite their sterling results - because the professors think they are too one-dimensional.

Just my 2 cents worth

hi all
Any feedback on mind champs??

bebe75 (bebe75)
My girl also want to join the swimming, but like you i got 2nd thought because i scare she got no time for school works.

Linette (linette)
My girl only got one cca which is swimming. But the time is very long, about 8 hours every week.

Linette

My sentiments exactly! I prefer my kids to be all rounders too. All work & no play would make the child really dull. However, compared to our times, it's even more challenging in this era to balance both academic & non academic due to the high demand of current primary school syllabus

My dd does volunteer work at nlb. A 2 years commitment. I believe it serves as a good experience for her so I'm supportive. Besides her volunteer work, she has a string of non academic weekly classes like music, arts, speech & drama. Busy busy, absolutely no spare time for any other time consuming CCA. More importantly, I doubt she would enjoy being stuck in one CCA all the way from primary to secondary. So for her DSA, I guess I will include everything in her portfolio & leave it to the sec school to decide 'impressive' or not, haha!

Hi Pin,

I have attended Mindchamps workshop. Personally I dont find it impressive.

There is 1 section where they will a memory game. 50 words will be shown on the screen and they select some parents to say out the words they have seen previously. If you happen to say out the word quick and continuously, they will pause you as a way to slow down your brain process.

They will then divide the children into group according to their age group and teach they to rmb the 50 words. Thus at the end of the workshop, they will ask the children to stage and repeat the words. Parents who feel impressed will then be keen to sign up.

After the workshop, they will assign a sales personnel to you.

1. To a certain point, my hubby commented it is similar to Adam Khoo's motivational workshop.

2. Though they say they will refund you if your child does not improve by 1 grade, many said it is not easy to get back the $$$$.

I asked if my child's grades are in band 1, how to know if he has benefitted from the class. The sales personnel kept quiet and looked impatient.

3. You have to sign up their package which is in thousands. They will tell you they have credit card interest free instalment plan.

i had a friend who sent her child to a prog that will help the kids to focus. She told me is kind of 2-3days prog that cost around 1k. Not sure what name of the prog it is because she can't recall the name. She says it really helps.

yawn yawn (yawn2) avrilf (avrilf)

Tks for the feedback. But i find it still cheaper the learning lab hehe. Learning lab the fee is so high, dunno result good or not??

So the hot topic now is on CCA.

Yawn,
What does your gal do in NLB volunteering? Sounds interesting.

My gal is in dance and Chinese club too. Ds is in Chinese orchestra and badminton. The CCA teacher IC had discouraged children from taking more than 1 CCA as some CCA timing may class and the niche CCA will be demanding with long hours during competition time. I insisted on enrolling on 2 CCA because (1) unlike most schools, my kids school has no remedial class so they are quite "free" aside from CCA engagements and tuition classes (2) I agree with Linette that kids with strong CCA focus will have a strong bond with the school and will be motivated to do better academically. (3) I would like the kids to try out more CCA to find one that fits them. I mean we don't marry the 1st guy that we date so shouldn't kids be exposed to more CCA before they focus on 1.

Outside, my kids also take music (ABRSM) and speech & drama (Trinity) courses.

Pin,
I believe Learning Lab is more academic focus whereas Mindchamp is motivational. I'm not so keen on Mindchamp. So far comments not so positive. My friend just joined Learning Lab so I will ask for her feedback later.

maisy

The volunteers conduct story telling, perform in drama for other kids. This involved team work and needs rehearsal. For indiviudal work, they write book review sometimes.

Where is your kids taking Trinity courses? Have they been through any exam? Is it difficult?

Yawn yawn,
Only Dd took the Trinity exam gr 1 last year for speech and drama. Before that, she took the London Lamda exams (supposedly easier). From what I know, there are 2 UK examiners in the test centre. Each candidate had to (1) memorize and recite a poem or literature (3/4 page long), (2) solo performance from memory a 10 min skit taken from a screenplay and (3) answer some theory questions posed by the examiners. She will be judged based on diction, confidence, clarity, expression etc. I heard that as they move up the grades, the performance will be more challenging. She had been taking these exams since 5 yo and she enjoys performing so it's not a chore for her to remember the loads of literature.

Hi fz, sorry for the delay. I've downloaded all your papers. However, some files are very big, I'm thinking of how to disseminate to you gals. Probably will break them up in few emails. I will have to do the sending by this week, if not very fast Jun hols coming to an end :p

hi nat,
it's ok. thanks for compiling.
first week of holidays already over ah and nothing much done! scary....

hi nat,
received with thanks! :D
it's weird how some schools can find time to cover up to cycles and/or materials while my son's school only does diversity for SA1.

Hi mummies,
Sorry for missing out lotsa of posting. Finally end of work and officially I joined the SAHM in Jun to takecare of my son. This mid-year no time to go through much sch work with my son, luckily he didn't failed.

Natellehcim, see that you are consolidating the papers can I join? Will go and dig out from his bag and post u tonight.

Hi Natellehim,

I have just sent you the Sci and Math from my son sch. Eng & Chinese i do not have them at hand. Please acknowledge when you receive them.

Hello,
How's everyone? This thread has been quite since 6/6. Guess mummies are either away for holidays, busy entertaining our kiddos at home or busy fetching them to and fro holiday programs. Before the holiday, I had this grand plan to help dd revise her 1st semester work. But now 3 wks have passed and this mummy is still deeply immersed in holiday mood.....

Hi mommies

My ambitious holiday action items all not executed. My kids just squabble everyday. Totally unproductive way to spend our holiday. Fuming

yawn yawn & natellehcim,

My dd1 took 2 hours to do 4 simple maths questions...her eyes and mind are on dd2 who was playing ipad ... I feel lousy too coz I'm also in holiday mood ... spend more time reading chinese novels than coaching the kids. Hope to buck up next week!

My kids have been playing more than doing work. The only thing that they achieved (through my nagging) was spent more time on practicing their piano as exam is coming. Was at popular bras basah popular today for their closed door sale. Super duper crowded. I refuse to buy more assessment books as my cupboard is still piled with many unfinished assessments and exam papers. Only bot stationery and oral books for middle to upper pri. If not in next exam, I will scramble to revise oral again.

Next week, most likely continue nua again. Lol

Juz me,
I went universal studios last yr. It is qt small and can easily cover within half day if u are not so adventurous. Cos the super long q ones are the challenging rides which I didn't attempt as the q was long. Pls dun miss the shows. They are v good.

maisy daisy,
I also went to the popular closed door sale on fri. Super crowded, queued almost 20mins to pay. I also stopped myself fm buying assessment bks, just got some storybooks & readers.

Juz me
not too bad for a theme park in a small place like us. I would say slightly better than Hong Kong Disney. But if you have younger kids many rides are restricted by height.

Cookiepie, Maisy
I went too but this time focus on my K1 son.

Me too super holiday mood and no drilling for my kids this holiday at all. Probably during this final week , just leaving it to the new tutor who just came last week.

brought my kids to watch 'mr popper's penguins' today. very funny, laughed so loudly, hehe. Storyline totally different from storybook though

Hi Mummies,

I just came back holidays.

Initially I planned to make my son finished the CA1 and SA1 exam papers but till to date nothing has been done. He has extra IT classes before our trip, and robotics training after we came back.

Cant believe school reopens next week.

Am wondering when my engine will start to warm up...

Hello mummies,

Today is the last friday of school holidays. For mummies who have completed their revisions with the kids, give yourselves a pat on the shoulder for the great effort. For mummies' whose engines have slowed down and are still in holiday mood (like me), let's enjoy this weekend and switch back to gear 4 on Monday.

Cookiepie,
My kids did some work but Mummy too lazy to mark.... Haha
Later going to catch Mr Poppin Penguin to get a good laugh. So fast holiday coming to an end
