Hi mummies,
My thoughts for CCAs is that, let them focus on one main one, and even if it is representing the school with longer hours, go for it! I find kids with a strong bond to the schools through CCAs tend to perform better academically too. CCAs are also very strong platforms to help develop time management skills, networking skills, leadership skills, etc. Like fz says, if they have too much time on their hands, they may either surf the net at home or when they are in sec sch, will start going out with friends (dunno desirable or non desirable!) or start dating younger! Whereas if they start a foundation of participating keenly in CCAs from pri sch, this "habit" may continue on to sec sch and beyond, which allows them to have more productive usage of time.
Whereas if we keep them at home and just focus on academic studies (tuition, enrichment, etc), our kids may end up very one-dimensional.
Perhaps the trick is to find one CCA that our kids really like, which gives them fulfillment and happiness, and not have too many different CCAs. My dd is in the school performing team of ballet, and she derives a lot of satisfaction from it. Sometimes their practices are 2 to 3 times a week, 2-hour each, esp if there are dance exams or performances coming up, but I take these as destressing sessions for her, and makes sure she finishes her work on these days after the sessions. She also has tennis as her CCA but I discouraged her to try for the school team for this, just play for fun and focus on one school-team CCA. She also has weekend ballet and piano, but I take these as destressing activities too. Hence, most important, our kids must enjoy such activities and not be stressed out by them.
And yawn yawn is right in saying that do not use CCAs just to work towards DSA, rather, ask our kids what interest them...
I used to work in an admissions dept of a local public university for a long time - top students typically have a whole plethora of CCAs and even outside-school community activities. And for top faculties like Law, Medicine, etc, top students without CCAs or outside-school activities are often not admitted after their interviews despite their sterling results - because the professors think they are too one-dimensional.
Just my 2 cents worth
