If preggy, better buy dry ones and double boil yourself. Do not buy red birdnest as most are dyed.
The canned ones, although they look very clean, it is due to regulations only. Because the merchant will get heavy fine if random checks or get complaints of even tiny hair is visible. So, to prevent heavy fines and with technology, the birdnest are bleached and lightly dyed with colors to look extremely clean and good to the consumer, who are unable to detect the hair with naked eyes. The bleach smell and taste are also undetectable after addition of other flavourings like sugar and tonic and the so called permitted preservatives.
After buying the birdnest, do open up the box and air it and make sure they birdnest are completely dry before you keep in dry and cool place. This is because most sellers spray between 5 to 15% of water on dry birdnest to increase the weight, though they will claim that this will reduce breakage during shipment and not affect the nett weight, which is not true. Many also will tell you that the dampness is not significant enough to cause mould to grow on your tonic, which is also not true.
