SINGAPORE: The government is extending infant care and childcare leave provisions to single parents.

Acting Social and Family Development Minister Chan Chun Sing announced this in Parliament on Thursday during debate for his ministry's budget estimates.

From May 1 this year, working single parents will receive the same benefits as their married counterparts.

They will be entitled to six days of childcare leave a year for children below seven years of age, and two days for those with children aged between seven and 12.

Single unwed parents will also enjoy six days of unpaid infant care leave a year if they have a child below the age of two.

Currently, working single parents are entitled only to two days of childcare leave for children aged seven and below.

Mr Chan said this move is aimed at giving unwed single parents better support for their care-giving responsibilities

"We understand and we appreciate that many of these families need additional support, especially single mothers. But single mothers are not a uniform group - there are unwed single mothers, there are divorced single mothers, there are widowed single mothers. And I appreciate the push by Mr Seah Kian Peng, Mr Janil, Ms Janice Koh, Ms Mary Liew, Ms Lee Li Lian for speaking up on behalf of the single parents. We will continue to strive to provide better support for our families under duress," Mr Chan said.

Mr Chan said his ministry will also develop more support programmes for vulnerable families. This, he said, will include single parent families.
