Hello mummies,
Just kaypoing here.
My boy is 2.5 years old now and was delivered by Dr Ang. Just to share my experiences...
Visits
A lot of people at the clinic. I always have to wait an hour or so on weekday evenings. Sat early mornings or weekdays afternoons are good timings. Usually within half an hour can see him.
Consultations are quite standard. Scan. measure blood pressure etc. Usually upon reaching the next trimester, he'll explain a bit on what to expect. But for most visit, he will go through all the necessary motions and answer whatever question you may have. It's true that he will not volunteer much information. But then, I do not expect him to provide info without me having to ask.
A few weeks before EDD
Dr Ang was concerned that my blood pressure was low and wanted me to go for induction immediately cos my boy was not putting on weight for some time and he was worried that my boy was not thriving in the womb. I was swamped with a lot of work at that time and needed to settle a few things so I asked Dr Ang if I could delay the induction for a week. He said ok, but wanted me to go back to the clinic to do CTG (to monitor BB's heart rate) every alternate days.
during labour
I was to be induced, but as fate would have it, my water bag broke early in the morning before admitting into TMC for induction (supposed to check in at night). I went to see Dr Ang at his clinic and told him that water bag broke. He asked me if I was having contractions, I said not yet and then he hesitated a while and decided not to check my cervix for dilation as he was afraid of bringing infection (cos water bag already broke). He said it's up to me whether I want to check into TMC at that point since going there would just be waiting for full dilation. Me and HB decided to wait at home.
Contractions set in around noon and progressed quite fast. by 3pm, me and HB didn't know what to do and cannot decide whether to check in or not. So we went back to Dr. Ang's clinic and told the nurse that we wanted to see Dr Ang immediately cos I was having contractions about 5-10 mins apart. But I was made to wait like more than 30 mins before I can see him. I was quite unhappy about that. Anyway, when I finally got to see him, he checked for my dilation and I had show and he told us to go to TMC immediately. He then told his nurse that he needed to go and asked her to hold off all the appointments.
So me and HB rushed to TMC.
Now on the hindsight, I think me and HB were quite stupid, we should have just gone directly to TMC instead of going back to Dr Ang's clinic.
at TMC
I was admitted to labour ward immediately. My contractions are now like 3 - 5 mins apart and was already 8-9cm dilated. I kept telling the nurses that I need to push and Dr Ang was still nowhere in sight. It was quite drama, hahah, at least it felt dramatic to me. I kept thinking to myself whether my baby will come out before Dr Ang arrives, and the nurses kept reassuring me that they had called him several times and he was on his way. Just when I thought I cannot hold out anymore, Dr Ang burst into the labour ward.
during delivery
My pelvic size turned out to be smaller than expected and even though my boy is very small (2.4kg), I couldn't push him out even after pushing several times. Dr Ang did not suggest emergency C-sect. Instead he tried his best to use his hand, suction cup and forceps to get my boy out while monitoring my boy's condition at the same time. My HB told me that all through the process Dr Ang seemed very calm, confident and assured. And the process, though appears to me to last forever, only lasted 20 mins or so. Later when he's alone with me and sewing me up, he told me that my delivery was one of the hardest natural deliveries he has done for the year. And he told me that for my next pregnancy, whomever that I decided to go to, I should let the gynae know that if the baby is expected to be more than 3kg in size, I would have to go for C-sect.
General impression
Dr Ang is a very nice guy. Easy to talk to, patient during consultations and when I call him. He is always contactable off-office hours on his HP. He's more of an efficient gynae rather than those who will sit with you and give reassurances and information. I do find that he's a bit 'garang'. But then, I guess his 'garangness' does make him seemed like a skillful doctor during delivery. What I like about him is that he does not encourage C-sect & push for epidural (though he said it's up to mummies).
He even told me during post delivery checkup that there is no need to go to PDs for routine checkups if baby is doing fine generally. He said a good GP will do just as well!
I'm planning to TTC for 2nd one end of this year. I think I would still go back to him.
That said and having read some of the posts on the bad experiences with Dr Ang. I would say that he is not PERFECT. Whether he is good enough, I guess it really depends on the experiences each individual has with him. He was good enough to me for my 1st pregnancy.
