Hi, I am interested in picking up ballet to improve my stamina & posture but have no foundation at all. Does anybody know of any ballet school/CC in Singapore that might be interested to conduct ballet classes for those who are 40 years or older ?

Hi, Any recommendation for ballet school 2.5 years old? My daugther really want to go for ballet class, but most of the class only accept 3 YO onward... so sad to see her disappoited...
Please help... Thanks..

chelchel,
i found this school at UE square. They start ballet classes from 2 yrs old (mom & toddler ballet), 2.5 - 3 yrs (toddler ballet).

Also, Jitterbugs Swingapore at The Cathay. They have a dance class for 2-3 yrs (Dance Babes) and from 4 yrs on Children's ballet.

I can't provide feedback on the classes, as i have not tried them...

Are there anymore good ballet classes in the East? My 2 daughters are losing interest in their current ballet class. May want to change teacher.

Hi! My kid was at Dance Babes (Jitterbugs Cathay) for a term, but it was more of play and a lot of times you'd see the moms doing the moves rather than the kids. Because of the age group, it could also get pretty chaotic. I didn't continue after the term.

@ cacao (stan1710)

RAD is generally better for classical ballet.

CSTD should be better for jazz .

(suggested by another mummy)

my older girl is in marine parade cc .

crestar marine parade WAS good but now Ms june lee their head teacher is at the school of dance in macpherson . she is a really great teacher . my younger girl say that she always gives feed backs and tips . she had teached in marine parade crestar for over 15 ++ years . she really has alot of experience . many teachers such as pang ling , kok hui shi , lena foo and tan see hang are her students and now succesful teachers .recomended ballet school this is the website :

Hi Aries,

thanks for your feedback. Haha my girl is 5 going on 6 now... My post was 2 years back... And she has been thru a number of trial classes, teachers, etc.

Yes, agree school if dance is fantastic but the space is small and the timings for classes not ideal, not to mention not easy to reach with mrt.

I actually found a fantastic teacher. My daughter is in Singapore ballet academy now but still takes lessons privately with this teacher.

I myself do lessons with her too.... This old swan oso inspired to dance hahaha...

troika,

Mind sharing the name of this fantastic teacher?

Hi scribblez.

I really luv my teacher but there have been others who feel she's too strict or pushes the girls too hard. So not all may rave about her. But I'm more than happy to share her name. Will PM you.

My pleasure

. Dance is really fun. I do adult ballet and contemporary with her. Really ache the next day, but I get so high ;P

Hi troika,

I know what you mean. I've also been inspired to try out dance classes at my "ripe old age". Hahah!

The muscle aches and bruises come with the package I guess! But we keep going back for more!

Just wish I could turn back time and start dancing when I was younger when my interest was first sparked.

You said it girrrll... ;P

Kids these days are so lucky... so many types of dance to choose from... lindy hop, bollywood... not just boring ol' ballet.

And there are so many fantastic performances to watch!

To more movin' and groovin' :D :D :D

Yeah, kids are spoilt for choice nowadays!

But it's the mummies and daddies whose pockets suffer, heheh...

How're the ballet lessons at SBA? Are they very strict and tough?

Well, the Gr 1 ballet teacher my girl is under is Ms Kwok. She's young, pretty, friendly, funny... everything that a 6yr old girl wants in any teacher ;).

The difference I feel with SBA compared to some other schools is that the girls themselves are seriously interested in ballet and pay attention. This is unlike in some places where it's more the parents wanting the girl to do ballet.

In her previous school, half the class was always chatting, using the barres as monkey bars or just plain running amok. No teacher can control 15-18 preschoolers and still keep a class going.

So, I'm pretty happy at SBA and the pte lessons.

Btw, how old is your DD?

Good to hear that your gal is enjoying herself at her ballet classes! And sounds like she has a great teacher.

My DD's 4 this year. So it's also a little hard to tell at this age who's serious about dance and who's not, hahah! Do need a very good teacher to be able to engage these young ones.

I guess at SBA you can be assured the teachers are professional dancers. I know my colleague was ecstatic her DD got into their pre-pri class.

I am a parent who sent two of my children to The Ballet and Music Company school for over a year. At one point I had a matter that needed to be addressed and I asked to speak to the management but was brushed off by the manager herself who refused to speak to me. This school treat parents in a condescending matter. Seems to they are interested in numbers and not quality or they would not treat parents in that manner.

Hi,

Would like to agree with pearl. If u r thinking of sending your gal for ballet classes ballet n music school should not even be any of your choice.

Had extremely bad experience with them too. PM me if u want more details

The Ballet & Music Company is a cheat and unprofessional

I have the same problem with the school. I have been taking paino and vocal lessons from them for almost coming 1.5 yrs @ Katong 112. Recently I wanted to pull out of the piano due to health reasons and continue with the singing.

I wrote an e-mail to them dated 21st of February 2013 to tell them that march will be my last four lessons and to return the deposit end of the month of March. They e-mailed me to ask me for reasons and later another e-mail to tell me that I didn't give a month notice. I called the school and they explained that everything was a misunderstanding and they have accepted my notice and deposite to be returned at the end of March.

I went for lessons as usual in February for the last lesson of the month and paid for singing before the lesson. I told them that I will settle the piano another day. After 45 mins, a lady named Li-Hua pulled me aside and told me all my lessons including piano and vocal were terminated and my deposite is to be confinscated.

I was so angry I ask the Li-Hua to call their boss or immediate. They refuse and say the decission is final. I called the police. When the police arrived, they said their senior manager is comming down to settle the problem. The police together with me and my parents waited for hours and no show. The police said they gone blue turtle. As we were leaving, the lady Li-Hua said that they made a mistake and that the only lesson that is terminated and deposite confinscated is the piano, because I didn't serve a full month of march. It is still unfair as it haven't happened yet and they terminate. I feel so cheated.

I wrote them e-mails and the bosses refuse to settle the problem with me up till date. Now I gave them some time to reply, refund my money total $770/- and if they don't, I will immediately file my claims in the subcourt. Beware of this school The Ballet & Music Company.

Shin,

No point talking to them. I took videos and photos and wanted to show their management how bad is the class bring conducted. Guess what, on the next lesson I saw 'NO camera and video taking' pasted on their door.

What is there to hide if they are doing things right!

Have since withdrawn my gals from this so called school

I agree with the above mommies. It has been a few years past and I still remember my bad experience with them. Right from the receptionist to the manager. They don't really care about my girl's progress with the constant change in teachers but more of their numbers. I actually stayed off ballet/dance for 1.5 years until my friend recommended me to a jazz teacher. I am now looking at dance from a new perspective. Happier.

My girls went to Sylvia Mccully School Of Dancing in Thomson Plaza. It is very different from the commercialised ballet schools--their fees are much lower and NO franchise after so many years and established. Ms Mccully still conduct lessons personally. Thumbs up!
